As the ad was playing, I said to myself: It’ll be a Haas. I’m not a Haas hater, and we have a bunch in our shop. I consider their controls to be the industry standard, which no other manufacturer measures up to. But on the hardware side, it’s all the little things put together, that make your hair turn gray some days.

I love Haas, if I would start a shop my first machine will be a Haas to quickly start generating money. However after that I would never buy a Haas again. Glad I’m moving from a Haas shop to a Doosan shop in 2 months

Doosan machines are far from perfect but their lathes are definitely more developed.

@@PiersonWorkholding Funny you mention that. I’ve been banging on the Doosan drum at work, to replace our Mazak lathe. 😎

Haas are great machines for the money but I think your on the right track going with Doosan ( now DM Solutions) our first Doosan lathe was impressive and from all my research the mills are far and away better than Haas. A bit more expensive but worth it for what your getting. Great looking shop sir. Very envious. There’s nothing better than having your own product line. We have some exclusive motorcycle performance parts we mfg and they are way better than contract parts. Sadly Chinese knock offs have taken a big chunk of it away 😞 Enjoy your videos. 🤙🏻🤙🏻

Amazing shop and love the videos they just need to be longer and you need to post more of them please! Strange our st35 works amazing and we don’t find it loud at all, however your in a completely different line of business running the same parts day in day out I can see how you would be aware of volume levels more so then a job shop.

Haas lathes use to have cogged belt driven spindles, and if they still do, there’s your noise right there!
Need multiple standard v-belts…quiet and smooth.

I knew before even watching the video that it would be a haas lathe left behind. With what you get standard with a Doosan/DN from Ellison there is no comparison with a Haas. The features and standard options with the doosan make it such a nice machine to be able to just hit start and walk away.

Amazing stuff! Love all the work you guys do. Just a quick note: Pure DI water will corrode those copper pipes and valves. Should be in a non reactive plastic like PVC/HDPE/PTFE etc or stainless.

Nothing like walking into the shop to an alarmed out machine with a half dozen "finished" parts jammed into the sub spindle. Bad start to a day

Awesome video as usual Jay. Ya know the St30 Y does not surprise Me at all. I only have Haas machined so I might think differently but the fact that most of You turning is Doosan why would You even want the odd ball lathe in there. To me in my opinion it simplifies programming , setup, and operation by having all the turning with one style controller. I am a little surprised by the new shop machine spacing. How far apart are they.? The look fairly close, but it’s going to be awesome. Congratulations on Your new shop!

Yes! Standardizing machines is a very important practice that is often overlooked.

When I started my shop last year, I looked at several Haas lathes to start off with (from the used market as I could not justify a new one) but knew there were a lot of other great options out there. Having experience with ST10s and 20s, I knew their pitfalls well, but did not know if it was the right call looking at other brands as I would have to learn a brand new control. I ended up going with an older Mazak Quick Turn Nexus and have been very shocked and pleased with it at the same time. It has its own sets of issues that the Haas does well, but having Integral spindle motors, weighing a a couple tons more than the Haas, and having the power of Mazatrol at my fingertips has been extremely beneficial to me. Being able to set up and run small lot jobs and make programming tweaks on the fly without having to visit a seat of CAM software is quite nice, but it does have its limits when it comes to live tool milling. I remember running 1" insert drills in steel on ST lathes, which would get the spindle load up there into the 100-150% range. Doing the same cut on the Mazak with a similar style drill results in a spindle load between 40-50%. The Puma 2600SY is an extremely nice machine, very rigid and thermally stable, it may be what I end up going with next as the new Quick Turns coming out of Florence Kentucky are on the higher end of the market spectrum.

Jay, whats that yellow air tank under the ST30Y used for? Is that a supplemental air reservoir for the lathe? Thanks much!

    • @PiersonWorkholding
      @PiersonWorkholding  Рік тому +1

Good eye. We had air flow issues at the end of the line at our last shop. The yellow tank was a reservoir to add instant capacity for the blowoff nozzles.

@Pierson Workholding thank you! This is interesting, I've been thinking about adding an air tank to my vf3 to give more capacity at the source. I have a very well designed air system in my shop and I can't help but thinking this mill uses tons of air during certain times.

I knew you were going to leave the y axis HAAS lathe. I have an ST20y and I feel the same. just a total disappointment. homing issues. it loses centerline randomly. auto door broke the first month out of warranty. auto door closed so rough! I also bought the probe and NEVER used it, the machine just always faulted the probe because the machine itself didnt know its centerline most the time. Each power up you have the center each tool holder with a indicator and then run the machine. So don't turn it off if your in a part run! 100% my wife will never let me buy another haas just because she hates running that machine so much. Which sucks for me because I like my vf4 and now that its paid off I would buy two more!

I couldn't agree more on the ST Lathe, Stupid loud! mine runs at 90 dB+ and the worst part is that HAAS is fine with the noise They just don't care about the operator going deaf.
