Ended up going with the Sony a6500. In the end, it was hard to venture outside of the Sony lineup as that's what all my glass is geared towards. Can't wait to start using it.
Dave Katz Yeah figured it was the smart decision. Tough one though, I’ve been looking for a reason to test into the Fuji system, but in the end it wouldn’t have been a very smart $$ choice.
I had fuji and loved it, but was tempted by all the hype about Sony. Sold all my fuji gear (£8000+) and went into Sony (A6500 and A9) but after 4 months sold it all and have been slowly buying fuji gear again. Can't beat the something special about Fuji and it's glass (especially now with the X-H1 and the IBIS). Lost £££'s but it is worth it to get back to Fuji. IMHO
Simon R. I know what you mean! I’ve gone back and forth between systems before as well - very expensive transition for sure. I’ve always wanted to test into the Fuji system and got pretty close recently, but ultimately decided to stick with Sony.
Mark, I realize this is an older video and you may have discovered something else by now, but my go-to for keeping my hands warm is a combination of a "muff" (like quarterbacks use) and glove liners. The liners keep your bare skin from coming into contact with the metal of your camera/lens/tripod/etc. (cold metal will sap the warmth out of your hands faster than you can say, 'sh*t, that's cold') and the muff allows warm air to circulate around your hands - which is the best way to stay warm. You can also purchase muffs with pockets for hand warmers if you like. Or ... you can simply stick the warmer (or multiple warmers) inside the muff. I have a battery powered warmer that charges off of a USB port that I use so I don't have to buy the chemical warmers over and over again.
Enjoyed the video Mark. I also own the FE 16-35GM and it is excellent. I use it primarily for architecture photography. I also own the Loxia 21 which is just excellent for landscape and cityscape shots. Keep up the good work.
Thank ya, Alfredo! Very much appreciate that. I haven’t ventured into the world of Loxia lenses, but I’ve had me eye on them for awhile. I’ll be sure to check out the 21.
Just came across your channel after posting some videos to the new photography videos website! I have a remarkably similar gear setup to yours, just with the 16-35 f/4 instead of the f/2.8. Looking forward to seeing more of your stuff!
Thanks Brian! I’ve heard good things about the 16-35 f/4 as well - that’s my go to favorite focal length. I’d say easily 75% of my shots are taken with it. Best of luck with your channel!
Great review, thanks for putting this together. The only thing I noticed is that I would never call the Sonnar 55/1.8 a nifty fifty, unlike the affordable Canon, that one is close to $900. A great and sharp fifty, just not as nifty ;)
AngelDigitalis Many thanks - glad you liked it! Indeed, it’s substantially more expensive than the original “nifty fifty”! Great lens though and it’s still the sharpest lens I’ve ever shot with👍
I do! I have an iPhone X and use the smaller weight, works nicely. I bought the other one too, since they are going to come out with a batter case for the iPhone X.
Mark - great video. Thanks. Just wondering. You do not carry a 24-70 in your kit. As I am contemplating purchasing that lens a cross-over between landscape and urban shooting, would appreciate your thoughts on why you do not have it. I too have a 16-35 f2.8 and it is worth the big bucks. As to your other lenses, I too own the 55 1.8 and could not be happier with its quality, and seems to be on my R7ii most of the time when doing city shots. Noticed you just got a Shimoda - very nice!!
Louis Hecht Jr Hi Louis! Thank you very much - glad you liked it👍 Most of the images I shoot are either between 16-24mm or 120 -200mm, so I’ve never really felt the need for one. If I were to purchase one though it would be the Sony 24-70 GM. I’ve tested it in the past and it’s fantastic much like the entire GM lineup. So far I’m very happy with the Shimoda! I’ve only been testing it for 3 weeks, but so far so good! Thanks for the comment, Louis!
Hey Mark another great video. I got a question about the RRS L bracket. Does it add any additional grip to the camera body for the pinky? I usually shoot my A7iii with the Sony grip extension but sadly I cannot mount my peak design capture plate while using this grip extension. So I am looking to see if the RRS L bracket would suffice as a grip extension as it has the additional 1/4 20 hole for mounting additional plates.
Logan Gilley Thanks a million Logan! Glad you enjoyed he video! Yes the RRS L bracket does add additional grip to the body. I like the way the camera body feels with the L bracket on as opposed to off. Add some extra volume to the overall feel which is nice IMO👍
Curious about your computer setup. You mentioned a MBP 2017 and obviously there is an iMac. Where do you store your pictures? All on external drive? How about backup(s)? I'm on a MBP with 500gb internal but running dead low on free space and I think I will move all pictures (already happened to 90%) out on an external and make a backup on my NAS.
Kohizzzle I usually offload my final edited images onto external hard drives. I need to get better at doing this though. I usually only do it once every few months. I’ve got 3 external drives - each are 1TB. I don’t have the best backup strategy in place though. It’s something I’m trying to get better at.
Mark Denney thanks! I cleaned my MBP yesterday and with that being said and also moving some files to the external drive seems like i‘m good to go again. BU Strategy is often forgotten and a bitter pill to swallow if shit goes south 😂😭
Hi Mark - really enjoyed this video. I also have the Nisi filter setup and currently use their huge leather box case. That mind shift soft case look excellent for the actual filters. What do you keep the clip-on filter holder and lens adapters in? I would love to have a solution that I can use instead of the current one. Do you have a link to that Mindshift case?
Peter McIlroy Hi Peter! Thank you - glad to hear you liked the video. I always struggle with a place to put the clip on filter holder as it’s such an odd shape - usually resort to placing it in any left over spot in my bag and the step up rings I slide in any flat pocket area. The Mind Shift Filter Hive is a much better solution than Nisi’s giant leather box👍
Do you have all that stuff in one camerabag ?? :o You must have a really big bag to fit all that stuff in. I know that wouldn't fit in my backback. I was just curious about the bag, but you only showed the gear.
xszl Yep! And it fits in just a 40L bag. In this episode I show the Fstop Ajna, but I’m currently using the Shimoda Explore 40L which I highly recommend! I’ve posted a couple videos on that bag as well if you want to check those out👍
Yes. I am surprised as I just wrote that comment and went to cricinfo.com to check cricket news and abt electronics banner with that lens shows. All in less than few seconds. Scary!!!
I'd say it's the best $2,000 camera on the market right now and a massive upgrade over the Sony a7ii. Love the touchscreen and the fact that it has the same focus system as the a9 is fantastic!
Douglas Paul Hi Douglas - I originally thought that I may hold some of the items closer to the lens so I put it on auto, but turns out I really didn’t hold anything close enough to make a difference.
SG Digital Thanks - much appreciated! I use a combination of a Rode lav mic with a Zoom H1 Digital recorder and a Rode Videomic Pro. I linked everything in the description if you want to take a closer look.
Yes actually I have one more question and that is I recently purchased by little over thinking the zoom h6 later I thought zoom h1 is good for mobility but as I already purchased so can you suggest any lavaliere mic that can directly connect with zoom h6 without the xy capsules 3.5mm port like in xlr port? is there some thing like that?
Put a piece of red tape on one side of your batteries so when one dies, put it back in your packet with the red on top. That way you know that it's dead.
Tom Pohorski Lol - yep I imagine they would be! That’s an incredible combo you have there👍 The 55mm f/1.8 was the first Sony lens I purchased when I got my a7rii, I don’t use it much, but I’m always looking for a composition that calls for it. Great lens!
Since I have it ( Dec. 2017) I have a lot of fun with it 😂The GM lens is a true masterpiece, I will test its capabilities in spring/summer during some milkyway shootings. I also wanted to buy a 35mm prime, but its amazingly sharp. And the A7R III has all the stuff I missed in the Mark 2: Longer battery life, better AF, joystick, faster memory read out, 10 FPS... For me 55mm is a good focal length, I prefer it over the 85 mm, I think its more versatile. Let see what my pockets tell me... 😆
💯% agree! The 16-35 GM is best lens I’ve ever owned. I’m headed to Moab in October - looking forward to testing it with some night photography. I actually just sold my 85m Zeiss Batis as I️ never used it, great lens - just didn’t need it.
Everyone has the same shit in these camera videos. Same old lame drone, same old Sony camera and same music everyone else is using on their videos. Nothing new to see here.
What are you going to add to your setup in 2018? I'm planning on upgrading my VLOG setup, thinking Sony a6500 or Fuji XT-2, not quite sure just yet.
Ended up going with the Sony a6500. In the end, it was hard to venture outside of the Sony lineup as that's what all my glass is geared towards. Can't wait to start using it.
Mark Denney makes sense

Dopest gear b- roll ever
Mystah Gerri Thanks man! Glad ya think so!

Richard Barakett Many thanks, Richard! Glad to do it and happy to hear you enjoy them👍

You can get counterweights provided by Moment and works perfectly!
angelfallsphotography I heard that, but never seen it in action. Do you have them?
I do! I have an iPhone X and use the smaller weight, works nicely. I bought the other one too, since they are going to come out with a batter case for the iPhone X.
angelfallsphotography Oh that’s awesome! I’m definitely going to check that out. Super appreciate the info👍

Moment has a counterweight for the osmo now, you should check it out!
Kyle Dart I heard about that the other day. I’m for sure going to be checking it out. Do you have one?
Mark Denney just the first version osmo. Haven’t sprung for the moment lenses yet.
Are you going to make an updated one this year?
Curious about your computer setup. You mentioned a MBP 2017 and obviously there is an iMac. Where do you store your pictures? All on external drive? How about backup(s)?

Thanks Mark - really helpful. I will see if I can track that down in New Zealand. Love your Instagram feed BTW.
Peter McIlroy Greatly appreciate that, Peter!
Sick intro - Loved it!
Much appreciated! Glad you think so!

Nice video Mark. I wish I got 16-35 GM instead of boat load of lenses I own.
kits VA Thank ya! Super fun video to make. 16-35 GM has got to be my all time fav lens I’ve ever owned! Good stuff👍
Google is watching my GAS. I already see add banners on Sony 16-35 mm GM after I mentioned here in the comment :-(
kits VA Haha!! That’s hilarious
Yes. I am surprised as I just wrote that comment and went to cricinfo.com to check cricket news and abt electronics banner with that lens shows. All in less than few seconds. Scary!!!
It surely is! They’re taking marketing to a whole new level!
What is your opinion of the newly announced Sony A7iii?
I'd say it's the best $2,000 camera on the market right now and a massive upgrade over the Sony a7ii. Love the touchscreen and the fact that it has the same focus system as the a9 is fantastic!
your camera keeps focusing. it seems you have it on auto focus. put it in manual so it will stop that slight jumping.
Douglas Paul Hi Douglas - I originally thought that I may hold some of the items closer to the lens so I put it on auto, but turns out I really didn’t hold anything close enough to make a difference.
what tripod do you use with those peak bracket screwed into the tripod mount?
Darren Parham It’s the Really Right Stuff TVC-34L tripod.
Very nice setup and what set up do you use for audios or voice records please let me know. Thank you.
SG Digital Thanks - much appreciated! I use a combination of a Rode lav mic with a Zoom H1 Digital recorder and a Rode Videomic Pro. I linked everything in the description if you want to take a closer look.
SG Digital And, Thanks for watching👍👍
Thanks for reply....and your welcome as I love watching your videos and learning too. Thanks again.
My pleasure! Let me know if you have any other questions.

What size zip-lock bags do you use for cameras and lenses?
UFGator1972 I’ve found that one gallon bag usually does the trick👍
Your jumper looks like a star trail😂
Lewis lius LOL!! I never noticed that before, but you’re right😂
Wt is red tag like thing hanging with ur camera a7r2 ??
They're anchors to attach camera straps too. They're made by a company called Peak Design. Here's a link amzn.to/2Gghwtf
Hey what happened to your MindShift Gear Trailscape 18L?
MiKKi I still have it, but haven’t used it in a bit.
0:13 what is that black and red loop thing and were can I get some

Thank you
Anytime! Let me know if you have any other questions.
are you a sony user
Yep - I’m a Sony user!
Is 16-35 gm good for portraits at 35mm??
Ayush Tyagi Yes, absolutely! This lens is really great at any focal length for any subject. Portraits, Landscapes, Street...everything! I’m a big fan👍
That is the reason, why I think the price is reasonable. I wanted to buy a 35 mm, but don´t need it anymore...
Tom Pohorski Yep! 100% agree with you, Tom! Very versatile lens👍
And you don´t need a filter holder... There are so many pros about this lens, I can talk for hours 😂
Tom Pohorski Thats right! I had forgotten about that.
Put a piece of red tape on one side of your batteries so when one dies, put it back in your packet with the red on top. That way you know that it's dead.
whats the intro song??
omg it‘s exactly my stuff what you got in your bag, it‘s so midblowing/ brainfuckingto watch this haha.
My pockets are empty after purchasing the A7R III with the Sony 16-35 F 2.8 GM 😀 Maybe the Sony 55mm F 1.8...
Tom Pohorski Lol - yep I imagine they would be! That’s an incredible combo you have there👍 The 55mm f/1.8 was the first Sony lens I purchased when I got my a7rii, I don’t use it much, but I’m always looking for a composition that calls for it. Great lens!

My pockets are also a bit empty!! I got the Nikon D850 + Nikon 14-24mm 2.8G
MNP Yep, that setup will certainly empty the pockets real quick👍👍
Intro song?? Anyone need it so bad🙌🏼🔥
Ayush Tyagi I’ll find out for ya - can’t remember the name.
It's a song called 'Breathe' from Epidemic Sound.
Mark Denney Thanks man. Appreciate it!👍🏻
did Sony sponsor you
Nope - Sony didn’t sponsor me. I pay full price for all my Sony photo gear.
Will you tell us that how cannon or other brand sponser people
AMIT BHANDARI I’m not really sure how they decide.

Jeli Maniago What happened? Did I say something stupid - lol!
Oh gotcha👌
