  • The Booktube community was shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of Alice, who had the channel ‪@AliceandtheGiantBookshelf‬. Elisabeth ‪@bouquinsbooks‬ had the lovely idea to reactivate this tag, that Alice created in 2021 I was tagged by Pat @BookChatWithPat8668.
    Prompts:
    1. Hercule Poirot is a detective who is extremely proud of his achievements. In The Mystery of the Blue Train, he announced “My name is Hercule Poirot, and I am probably the greatest detective in the world.” If not Poirot, who is your favourite detective? (And what book do you recommend featuring your favourite?)
    2. Hercule Poirot famously uses his “Little grey cells” to solves cases - have you ever solved an Agatha Christie mystery? If yes, which one? If no, is there an author whose mysteries you have solved?
    3. The Mysterious Affair at Styles is the introduction to Hercule Poirot. Recommend a first book in a series where you met one of your favourite characters.
    4. Murder on the Orient Express: Agatha Christie wrote several Poirot books set on different types of transport. What is your favourite mystery set on a train/ plane/ boat?
    5. The ABC Murders features a killer working their way through an alphabet of victims. Recommend a mystery involving a serial killer.
    6. Dumb Witness: Bob the dog helps Poirot’s investigation in this one. Can you recommend a book where an animal helps to solve the case?
    7. Five Little Pigs (also adapted as a play Go Back for Murder): Poirot solves several cases in his time that have been closed for years. Which is your favourite “cold case” Poirot? If you don’t have one, can you recommend any other authors/ detectives who have solved a past cold case?
    8. Dead Man’s Folly is famously set at Agatha Christie’s own holiday home, Greenway. What is your favourite murder mystery setting?
    9. Do you have a favourite Poirot mystery? (If not, tell us a favourite mystery you’ve read recently.)
    10. How many Poirot books have you read? (If you’ve not read any or haven’t read many yet, which one do you plan to read next?
    11. Please tag anyone and everyone who likes Agatha Christie, Poirot, or mysteries in general!
    Books Mentioned:
    Case Histories by Kate Atkinson
    Still Midnight by Denise Mina
    The Hunter by Tana French
The Talented Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith

That shade of blue is great on you. So sorry about the loss of Alice. 🤗 Ooh, yes, the Red Dragon. Such a disturbing book. The most disturbing things were what made it so compelling. The killer’s psychological damage really kept the stakes and the tension high.

I am so amazed at a community of booktubers that provide comfort and support to each other. I've not read any Agatha Christie novels. I tried a couple and never got very far. Anyway, I really enjoyed reading the Silence of the Lambs. I thought it was very well written. I didn't watch the movie for several years after it came out because I did not want it to disappoint me. It didn't. Great tag. Stay cool and hopefully the hurricane does not impact your area too much. See you in the next one

It's lovely to see this tag circulating in Alice's memory. Jackson Brodie: someday I'll get to the books beyond Case Histories. I didn't get on with the only Denise Mina I read but am still curious about her Alex Morrow series. Yay Dan Chaon! He doesn't get enough attention.

First date seeing Silence of the Lambs is hilarious! It’s the one movie I actually remember going to see as it was opening night (when they still were on Fridays) and we had to stand outside in a long line waiting for like 30-40 minutes and it was an historically cold day below freezing.
I remember being completely frozen and stomping my feet trying to warm them up. It was right around Valentine’s Day and I had made cookies for work (god I must have been young and optimistic to still be doing things like that) and we ate the remaining ones to sustain us. I think they were heart shaped sugar cookies with the little red cinnamon hearts pressed into them, so they provided that spiced heat for our tongues.
Part of my interest in seeing the movie was picking out the famous settings of Pittsburgh that were standing in for other locations. Especially when she walks through the Smithsonian to see the lepidopterist and it’s really the dinosaur hall at the Carnegie Museum where I had worked just a few years earlier. Carnegie was fascinated with dinosaurs and had a better collection than the Smithsonian and even one named after him.

@@bookofdust I really like this super specific cookie memory! I guess I always thought it was filmed in DC and at Quantico. I wonder if the movie holds up. Family movie night, perhaps!? 😄

    • @bookofdust
      @bookofdust 9 днів тому +1

@@readandre-read The Quantico scenes were filmed there, that was a big deal at the time. Pittsburgh was nice and central to Ohio and West Virginia filming and had a variety of landscapes. The cookies definitely reinforced the memory and time of year. I remember being so cold we going to leave and not see the movie. Every seat was filled once we were in and all those packed bodies warmed us up. It seems like a movie I wouldn’t normally have been drawn to, but I think it was Jodie Foster who was the draw. I did rewatch it during the pandemic and found it remarkable, one of the movies they completely got right with the awards. And I could finally spot Chris Issac as one of the guards where they held Lechter in the free standing jail cell.
