Well done you dodged the bullet there Justin and fair play to you I love your honesty so many people on here wouldn't show this. I Feel your pain, iv been in this situation a couple of times and it can swallow up a full day in no time. I try an stick to the real Italian porcelain now as it seems to cut beautiful rather than that verified stuff as its just a to brittle to cut. Keep the videos coming 👍.

I feel your pain Justin had the same issue in the summer with 3 spare 2 off em same issue had 1 left so I cut the cover down and put a full one on top over it with the knowledge I was able to grabo it out with it sticking to the bed. Looks smart! I've done a few cuts like that, never used polish stuff tho but on the times I have had to do it (after many fails) was cut a smaller square in the centre or the finished square a fair bit smaller and then cut diagonally to the corners, flipped it over to get the cut as close to the corners as possible, then flip back over to cut the straights, also I did score the lines about 2-3mm before doing anything. also I find a bit of 100mm celotex to cut on helps a bit. I also considered using a diamond hole saw 20-30mm or something on the corners to stop it fracturing but the other method worked so didn't have to go out to get a hole saw, not tried tho, one I did which was pretty much exactly like your situation which was 40mm close to the edge I suggested to the customer to take 40mm off the first one going down so the one that needed cutting finished on the end of the cover which made it an open ended cut, didn't really notice either.

    Good solution wrt the manhole.
Even if you had successfully cut out the inner rectangle, I'd be willing to bet the weakness introduced would've resulted in the tile cracking the next time there was a frost/thaw cycle.

    Hi Lads
Not sure if anyone else has suggested this, but I was always told to cut fragile things like that on the sand pile so you have a really deep bed under it to absorb the vibrations as much as possible. Saying that though the cut you were trying there is next to impossible given the material. Can't be throwing money away like that at £30 a slab! End job looked beautiful BTW. 👍

Ok jim hope your well mate .
Totally right what you say agree with all of it .i think these manufacturers or the suppliers should be aiding us with tutorials or even a course to be able to cut porcelain. When you are a paving installer we have cut so many different materials over the years and its been fine .This porcelain is a totally different product due to it being so hard and brittle. Youd think they'd have at least a video or a leaflet or something to help us .They just want to sell it and wash there hands and thats massive failure in my book .

I haven't tried myself but if you get a small say 10-20mm diamond core drill bit for porcelain and drill a hole in all 4 corners, almost like using a jigsaw on a sheet off wood. Then cut the straight lines with the grinder. The holes cut would relieve the tension and should it try to crack it will get as far as the hole and that's it. might work

Nice job. Looks like you have way too large lid for that hole. What i would do with porcelain,in this case is to decrease the size of the manhole lid and/or ofset it to the side of the tile and then just cut one side of the tile. It works for me and dosent ad any expenses to project. When its necesary it's still possible to access it/ clean it etc. In 90% of the cases there is no necesity to inspect it anyways....
Another trick is to put it on the cememt and leave it for a night and then cut it out. Cement will ad rigidity to the tile...
