- Terringzean Castle is a ruin located near Cumnock in East Ayrshire. The unusual 14th century octagonal tower is similar to that at Mugdock Castle. It is pronounced 'Tringan' locally and was once also known as Crawfordstone Castle.
Thanks for giving the proper pronunciation, Roger. It's puzzled me for some time.
Got stuck at the top climbing it when I was a bairn. 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
That would certainly make a life long memory :-)
I climbed it many a time
Who else went for the magic mushrooms ?
A strange spelling indeed!
It's a bit like Crossraguel which has about 30 spelling variations. No suggestions as to its origins though.
Its because in that word the z isn't really z it is a yogh pronounced j or nj in Scots. Early printers didn't have a yogh so used to use the z in place of it. Same reason Dalziel Menzies etc are not pronounced as they appear.
