How To Walk Your Cat on a Leash || IT'S NOT EASY, but so worth it!

- This is how we were able to get our Bengal cat kona to walk on a leash and harness. We try our best to take her out every day, if not at least 3 times a week to make sure she gets accustomed to the outdoors. After she got used to her harness and leash, then we were ready to take her out, they may be scared and distracted, but be patient and go at their pace!

@@chrismadou8758 what is wrong w/ u? if they give her enough attention, and shes healthy and active, its fine. cats r literally all like that. not as responsive on walks like dogs.
@@chrismadou8758 thanks man. nearly done kindergarten. be fuckin proud. dumb af
I haven't seen it mentioned, but perhaps the first step before walking them is the relationship. The relationship is built through direct participation. A bengal is not a cat you can just ignore. I get down on the floor several times a day and she get's her playtime. Playing hide and seek or playing ball with them are necessary for them to think of you as their buddy. After 2 years I have that close bond with her and she's a wonderful pet and companion. I then started walking her with her vest and it worked better than expected. Putting on the vest and attaching the leash is easy because she knows she's going to get a treat and some grass hoppers to chase. When I don't want her going in a certain direction, I snap my fingers and direct her. 70% of the time she will respond accordingly.
The reason for the vest and leash is not that I'm concerned she will run away, but that she will climb a 100ft pine tree and expect me to get her down, jump the fence to check out a neighbor's yard or crawl under a shed where other animals are known to live. Their mission in life is to investigate everything and there are many potential dangers. They also get freaked out by weird things. You just never know. She now has a pattern of 2 walks per day and it's working very well. And they like it cool, not hot.
You guys walk cats properly. Most people try and pull them to walk. Walking a cat is like letting them roam! Love you guys!
agreed!!
So encouraging! Thanks for the effort to bring this to us
this kitty will never get bored staying outside and exploring!
Hi guys. You are new to living with a bengal, so you don't recognize it here but I do: when you are on a walk with her, while she has her back to you while you are calling her is her bengal coming out. If you notice, her tail is twitching with slight intervals in between? That is a sign that she is content, as I lived with one for seven years I have had the experience to be able to recognize it. She's enjoying the scenery, being outside and actively not acknowledging you. She will likely become more stubborn as she gets older, it's a trade off between energy level and stubbornness. Good luck. Also, soon she may be walking you.
Bengals live and hunt in trees. I would suggest that you provide a way for her to climb, they have very strong instincts to climb and hunt. I had a kitty skyline, the long parts were made from tree trunks, he would climb up the tree trunks instead of using the platforms. Some bengals love to swim.
I'm walking my Bengal for quite a while & as she gets older, she is actually better at following & listening when called. But I do train her to do so..without training she would all over the place. Recently she also walked her first off-leash walk & she did a great job. Never walked off the trail, followed me without getting distracted by anything.
So, I can't really agree that Bengals get more stubborn when getting older...I think that only happens, when there isn't enough training.
we are happy to hear that she is content. Also, a tail that is pointing straight up with a slight curve at the top also means she is happy :)
@@TravelersGarden_dgdr gald to hear this!
Will be why Henry spends a lot of his time ontop of his owners gym equipment thats quite high up. But to be honest its a natural cat trait to want to see everything, when my mums partners cat moved to their new home at the time in York she once walked all the way around the garden stepping out with chris at her side as a kind of protection did Nash bless her lol and she'd regularly sit at the windowsill looking outside a lot whilst lying down.
Love your videos so much! Can’t wait to go on adventures with our baby bengals

the beautiful Kona. i'll go to adopt one...
Awe! For me it’s actually fun to watch my kitty get distracted too :) I got her when she was 6 months and she gets scared easily but being outside is lots of fun for her.
I randomly found and watched one of your other cat videos tonight and thought I spotted the bridge in a shot. I grew up in Lethbridge but have been in Toronto for 20 years now. I got my Bengal at the beginning of April and she’s 4 months old now. Everyone says “they’re very active” but omg you’re so right - that phrase didn’t really resonate. They’re so crazy! But it’s amazing and fun. I’m really into clicker training and learning all I can to help us both enjoy life with and life as a Bengal. She’s good with her harness but “walking” is more like I wander beside her while she investigates everything. Not much walking at all yet haha.
Haha yes! Somedays she is good at walks and somedays it’s not so much lol crazy that your from yql haha glad your are enjoying your kitty :)
Wow. So crazy. Lived in Lethbridge fir two years prior to moving to Australia 🇦🇺. Now I walk my cat by the Brisbane river surrounded by palm trees 🌴 😂. Anyhow, nice to see what you guys are up to in Lethy (Aussie for Lethbridge) lol

Lovely kitty, love her coat
Your bengal is beautiful I bought one last week and I’m interested in leash training him
Love, love, love this video! I've been training my cats to walk on leash for years, and like you said, it takes love and patience, but man, is it worth it. A couple years ago, I wrote a book called The Zen of Cat Walking to help others with the process. Much of what I had to say was reflected here; good job. In the early days finding a public garden to walk your cat in is awesome. Cats tend to be more comfortable when they don't have to worry about what's going on all around them. If they're walking among hedges, for instance, they don't have to worry about what's on the hedge side. As for people, that can take a little time but it's definitely doable. One of my cats, Gloria Vanderbilt (an Oriental Shorthair) , has been going on walks daily for a year now,. She recently decided that people walking toward her isn't a threat. For a while now, she's been okay with people being nearby as long as they weren't walking directly toward her (i.e., on the same path), but now she's pretty oblivious to them most time. Because we also have a dog, she's not afraid of them, but whenever I see a dog off leash, I pick her up and carry her past. Most parks require dogs on leash, so I nicely ask them to leash their dog. Sometimes it even works (: Thanks for sharing your incredible video journey...and sorry this was message has been so long-winded!
P.S. I had a female Bengal...adored her...but she was pretty demure and wasn't as crazy as most kittens.
Thank you for leaving this beautiful comment :) we still try and take Kona out all the time. It’s definitely possible to walk a cat haha even though no one believes us haha
Great that you walk your cats too. I walk my 3 cats as well...but all together. A Siamese, Burmese & Bengal.
This is the first video I watch of yours ... Kona is so cute ! I just got my first cat. Also hey from Edmonton!
Thank you for the tips !!!

I get my Bengal kitty Romeo on 3 weeks and I’m going to be using some of your tips. Only difference is I have a lonely 2 year old cat. Hopefully he takes well to him.
Great filming, great couple!
Silly kitty doesn’t want to walk on a boring trail or road. It’s much more exciting out in the tall grass, trees, bushes- all the places that a cat in the wild would go. Asian leopards are fierce predators. Leaving themselves out in the open is not a natural instant. All your prey runs away. Walking down a straight open path is a human thing. Lol
Kona is beautiful!
Bought a step in harness and leash for my one year old cat today. He does not seemed bothered by the harness much at all. Not too concerned about leash training. My wife is in a nursing home for inpatient physical rehab and I wanted to be able to take him to visit her. Leash and harness are so he can't take off on us.
Love your videos btw! More videos with your sweet kitty on adventures please please :)
That's so cute. I've just got a marble Bengal kitten and I am going to get a harness for her and try training her to go out. 😁

In 4 weeks, we get our Pedigree Bengal "Una". Your videos are helpful. Gracias!
Lol using the finger rub motion trying to get Kona to come 😂😂 I use it on my cats too but it rarely works. Also my husband’s name is Kurtis with a K as well! Haven’t seen another Kurtis before 😁
He must be one of the cool kurtis’s haha
I'm on leash training phase. Every thing I read says it takes longer to get cat to come when called than it does to leash train. I was trying to train my cat both at once because leash and harness are a feeling thing and clicker training is verbal. My cat isn't doing well with clicker, when I was trying to get him to associate treats with the click, he went after my finger cuz my hand smelt like his treats
she is a beauty
I hand raised a cat from birth.
24 / 7 for a time.
She can be put outside in just about any foriegn location without a leash.
She follows like a shadow.
And has the mind of a grown adult.
Hey love your video!! What cat carrier backpack do you use? Do you know the weight capacity? I have two kittens I would like to get out together but it seems the backpack carriers may not be sturdy enough for two kitties.
okay, i have to admit i have a woman crush on kona! shes so purrrfect!! haha
She has been the best kitty !!!
More cat vids plz. also ur videos are really HQ good stuff
Can do! We have a one month update/things you should know next week :)
Great video. It seems as though you’re trying to walk the cat like you would a dog which could lead to more frustration on your end.
When walking a cat, the cat will be walking you. You just have to follow where they want to go even though it’s not linear. That will make each walk an amazing walk.
I trained my 3 cats to follow me. If done right, there is no frustration at all & the cats actually love following their owner & feel safe that way. So, it's basically about the bond between owner & cat.
I walk my cats for almost 12 years like that...without problem.
@@TravelersGarden_dgdrHow did you train them to follow you?
@@Bengu-xh7hj I have several detailed tutorials about that. You can check them out, if you want.
I am so glad you filmed this. Do you have any ideas about how to train an adult Bengal to train to do this? Beautiful cat, by the way!!!
Thanks so much :) I would try all of these same tips, you might just have to take it extra slow with an older cat and be consistent at getting them outside!

Adorable little kitty! We are just starting our adventure kitty training with our Maine Coon kitten 'Blaze', he's only 5 months. He's walked around a petstore so far but that's about it ;-) Waiting for nicer weather!
that will be so fun!
@@KurtisandChelsey He had this very first outside walk just this past weekend, and did so well! Video is posted :-)
I have a remarkable and well-trained Bengal as well. We spent a great deal of time to train him to go with us everywhere. I found that when outside, if leashed, it made a lot of sense use, as you do, a very long leash, but also one without and handle to snag. Why? If there is a dog, it proved essential to let the leash go to allow the cat to make its own way to safety, up a tree or otherwise, without getting stuck. (Often, after a while, for walks, even around the neighborhood, I just stopped using a leash at all. Be sure: without fail, the cat and will return to you after it is comfortable. Ultimately, using a leash at all was more a matter of convenience than an absolute necessary, but enabling the cat to run free if necessary without getting caught up in anything proved key. Great job, though. Remarkable animals.
What do you guys do with her in the winter when there's snow?
So cool. How does she respond to dogs? And do you worry about hawks? That would be a big fear of mine.
Hi - love your videos - where can i get the backpack carrier showing in this youtube - it's not listed on your product page.
Heyy! Honestly, we got this one on Amazon a while ago, it was fine for Kona when she was this small, but as she grew it wasn't sturdy enough and deteriorated fast! The fatcat backpack we have on our website has been the best test and one that I can actually recommend.
Cute
My 5 month old constantly escapes the house this really has changed it if it would like to go out it brings the harness over to me to go out
If I had a cat this gorgeous, with such amazing patterning and markings, that cat would turn me into the worst cat dad, again. It would eat and claw up my white leather sofas, knock over an expensive vase, it would unroll every roll and chew up the TP in the house, it might knock over the giant flat-screen, it would shred up every tie I own. I'd momentarily be livid inside and then I'd look at those green playful eyes and raised tail and that littler purring inside and be like, it's okay, she loves me, hops up on my lap, follows me throughout the house and all I have to do is feed her, let her get sunshine, and play goalie with a tennis ball. Nothing else matters. She'd be spoiled beyond words and bad behavior would be explained away "well, it's just what cats do...and we're a packaged-deal." LOL. I did that with my purebred Bombay, "Yuban." He was the best.
Awesome video! Is there any problems with just kinda “pulling them along” if they get distracted by a tree? I know with past dogs I’ve had that’s what I would do when they keep getting distracted, not violently, but just give a little pull and then they stop getting sidetracked. Is that not applicable for cats though?
you can to an extent. Dogs have a different attention span then cats. With dogs to can kind of break their attention with sound and touch, but cats are a bit different, you can kind of pull them along but if you do it too much they might just totally try to do the opposite and do what ever they want haha.
I dont see how that was bad time. Bengals are very smart and you MUST earn their trust.
What flea and tick recs do you have?
Looks more like the cat is walking her people haha
I am picking my bengal cat up tomorrow! You guys have been awesome. At what age did you first start walking her?
As soon as possible!
Hey guys, the link for the products does not work. Can you tell me where you got the harness? Kona is adorable.
My British Blue walks on a lead. He hates leaving the park and gets a little angry when it's time to go home We got him when he was 8 weeks old and put the harness on pretty much a month or so after He doesn't get as excited as a dog when we show the lead but in no way fights when we put the harness on. He now enjoys the car ride too. Giving an indoor cat more freedom is so vital for them to burn energy. When we walk him he sleeps better and thanks us with a leg rub 😊 I'd recommend every cat owner to take their baby for a walk
My friend cute cat❤️❤️❤️
Who gets the cat when y’all split cause that’s where this is going ....Jp lol great videos
thanks so much lol still happliy married, 4 years this winter :)
Haha, We have two bengal boys and they pretty much are impossible unless we have a group so they can follow!
It can definitely be frustrating lol
I was hoping you guys could give me info about where I can get a bengal from a responsable breeder
Juan Garcia I would find a breeder that is a licensed bengal breeder, if they have a current license they should be reputable, all you have to do is ask and then visit the home before you make your decision :)
Thanks for the content but there something missing here. You need a clicker to catch the car attention, cats are not dogs. Cat have different behavior compared to dogs so a clicker will work much better and treats that she is use to eat a home to make her fell comfortable in new territory. And helps a lot if the space is familiar and the same until the cat is confident to walk.
The bengal is gorgeous and very lucky to have such a lovely parents 💚
Great father for kona
She is so precious! Have you encountered dogs along the path? If so, how do you handle that? Do you pick her up?
Yes haha it depends. Most of the time yes, it’s much safer. that way she won’t try to run up a tree or something haha. If it’s a chill dog we can just leave her down :)
Thank you!
When do you use treats on cat to come?
Hey you..I"m from South Africa and cant wait to get my kitty in 2 weeks time...I love Kona shes so beautiful.. cant wait to bring mine home...tell me what do you feed her how many times a day... there so many different kinds of food and I heard that raw food is the best for them? What would you suggest?
You will love your new kitty :) we are going to post a one month update next week and we will talk about all of this!! But we feed her a brand called instincts, it has high protein and has dehydrated raw chunks in it, you can do raw or dehydrated raw. We also mix in a high protein wet cat food as she doesn’t have all of her teeth in yet. We feed her 3 times a day, but have her in a specific feeding schedule, we will talk in more depth about this next week so subscribe for more :):):)

Hello! First time cat owner here. I've gotten my kitten to get vaccinations for "indoor cats". Do you have to get "outdoor cat" vaccinations to take your cat out for walks?
As long as they have the recomonded shots like rabies etc you should be okay. but i would be sure to wear a flea and tick collar or use the drops!
Do they get used to walking around with people near by
What if they climb too high in the tree? Or do you stop them?
We don’t let her climb big trees for sure haha if you can’t get them down don’t let the climb
I’m very nervous to walk my cat, my complex where I live are more dog owners. Such a shame because we have such beautiful walking paths
Yeah, we tired taking Kona to the dog lark where the dogs were off leash and they were just too excited to be into river to a kitty lol we try to take to get to more secluded places.
My almost 2-year-old cat immediately sits down as soon as we put the harness and leash on, and acts like she doesn’t know how to walk. Any tips?
I just rescued a Bengal. She’s about 3 years old. Do you think it’s too late to train her?
it may be a bit more difficult and could take longer, but its never too late!
Does she relieve herself outdoors?
Cats are pretty instinctive and they will know to go outdoors :) just be sure to clean up after them!
Mine just freezes when we go outside
where is that phoenix park?
phoenix? I dont know what you mean. but this is in Lethbridge, Alberta
I have a persian kitten and shes scared to go outside any advice?
And is it ok if my leash is short
Yep, just go outside often, go slow. put the ktty on a harness and just let her explore, even for 5-10 mins a day and stay longer each time. But find a quite location with few people, animals and cars to start.
Rather than try to call my cat I just carry on as though there's something more interesting ahead. Sometimes I walk with a small fishing rod and a little packing peanut on the end of it
Whatever works for you!
what happens if she goes to bathroom?
she is allowed to outside. She dosnt have a problem. of course we have to pick up after her.
I have a question.
Will street dogs attack the cats while taking them for a walk? If so then how do you handle it?
We don’t really have street dogs here. But if someone is walking their dog we usually just put Kona in her backpack. Most dogs are just excited but Kona doesn’t know that
@@KurtisandChelsey Oh wow that's so cute. Thank you for your response, Cheers!
FIRST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Harness training my cat, but leash training is horrible so far, maybe I jumped the gun with leash. Harness training went 80 percent well so I might have thought leash would go as well. Im not quitting yet, just need to retry. Also I cave to easily with my bengal. He makes certain sounds as long as he's not begging for food or trying to climb stuff he shouldnt, he owns the place. But umm does kona ever make funny sounds. I took my cat to vet, they said he's healthy, but he kinda snores a little, slightly squeaks when he sniffs things, other than that he does seem healthy. Bengals are my new fave cats when I'm not having heart attacks >< mine still has no sense the stove is bad to play near. Mom was cooking pasta, we were watching, cat was on left side of counter, some how he went behind the burner and sat on the right side of the stove and we hurriedly picked him up :( I get they are fearless but serriously
Thank you for the vids because training wise, im learning lots
