- The European Union is a single market of 27 countries. While the bloc was officially formed in 1993, it took its member states 25 years longer to agree on the creation of a common public prosecutor’s office.
The office is responsible for prosecuting and bringing charges against those accused of crimes against the financial interests of the EU. But Poland, Hungary, Ireland, Denmark and Sweden remain outside of the agreement.
So, without the support of all the member states, how much authority does it have to do its job? The European chief prosecutor, Laura Kovesi, talks to Al Jazeera.
Great hard hitting interview and Kovesi stands strong. I'm very impressed. Her accent sound much more honest than a British accent.
Shouldn't the European Union investigate all leaders of Europe whether they're suspected of a crime or not? Otherwise, the EU is just another corrupt institution. Only, a fool trusts any government.

She's an absolute hero at home, despite a constant media campaign against her. Her leadership led to the prosection of the highest politicians in the country, she won the EPPO on her own competence and with no support from her own country which at that time was led by a now convicted man and a most despised politician. 49 million € for such an important institution seems pitiful. I wonder how serious European policy makers are when it comes to tackling fraud and corruption. Maybe their budget should be dependant on a % of money they recuperate from fraudeurs. Kovesi seems competent though.
