- Time to put 4 Wheated (almost) Barrel Proof Bourbons up against each other! We say almost because our Weller Full Proof is technically the barrel entry proof of 114. Also in this Flight we have Maker's Cask Strength at 112.2 proof, William LaRue Weller 2018 at 125.7 proof, and Larceny Barrel Proof A120 at 123.2 proof.

Awesome idea for a Flight Fight! Thanks for doing this. I've been really enjoying high proof stuff - maybe due to the craziness going on in the world. Stagg Jr still my favorite with Bookers also way up there. I recently got to try Willett FE Bourbon 6yr @ 130.2 proof. It was fantastic! I wish I could actually find a bottle to buy. I have Larceny BP and so far is just okay for me. I hope it grows on me.
Awesome, I'm so glad you took my suggestion to heart and did this flight fight. I'm sure I'm the only person who suggested that when you made the Larceny video. Maker's CS is my choice over Larceny BP, I tried them blind last week.

Not really surprised the highest proof and the oldest bourbon wins, especially when it comes to wheaters. Not knocking them, I'm sure william larue weller is fantastic, otherwise it would be so hyped. Great vid :) though I do wish larceny got 2nd for Sara too! Haha
Honestly, I want Makers to win everything since it holds a dear place in my heart and (like many others) - was the first "brown liquor" that made me dive facefirst into the world of whiskeys and bourbons.
Great job I generally like Rye Bourbons better. I would certainly never turn any of those down and I would of course enjoy them. I've been doing some fantastic Bourbons as well lately thanks to my friend bourbon Bob.

I have had a couple bottles of Makers Cask. I like it, but it always drinks pretty hot especially compared to others of the same proof

Does Makers also add water to take down to “cask strength” entry proof. I always thought that was the way to translate cask strength vs. Barrel proof. 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️

Cask strength is surprisingly good...
I give credit to Maker's for being my main entre into bourbon. I first drank manhattans all the time and preferred Makers to Bulleit and Knob Creek, the bar mainstays. Then started moving to a rock only. Then finally to neat. Since then I barely ever drink wheaters. I nowadays prefer higher proofers and things like Rare Breed, Russell's single barrel, Knob Creek single barrel, Booker's. I.e. I guess I just prefer the rye-er stuff.
I did a similar flight fight except I added Old Fitz 15 year.... almost exactly the same order as chad, but Old Fitz beat out my store pick Full proof and the MM. Weird that I liked the 100 proof over the higher proof for me, but I agree the full proof was way out of character for Weller, its like they took the special reserve and made it full proof, bitter edges that I just didn't love almost like it was a 3-4 yr and not an 8-10yr. Maybe that's why its not age stated, it may be super young... Also agree 100% about the non store pick tasting better! That bottle at OBC was GOOD!
The Old Fitz 15 is crazy good! Would loved to have put it in there but it would have messed up our theme, oh and also, we don't have a bottle of it! hahah!

Larceny BP BURIES the other 3 of these. Destroys them. Not even close. ....my opinion at least. People love Weller, and I just can't get on that train. Always fun to see how different labels do next to one another.

It's all about round 2! Also, I did a little editing magic there to cut out some of her coming around to it to make the results time more of a surprise, but really the majority of her changing her mind came about in the "A /B" tasting part, which we speed up for time. We we A / B tested the WLW against the others, it became more clear that it just had a certain edge over the others.
Your reactions after the blind test is exactly why you shouldn't know beforehand what you are drinking as it gives you preconceived ideas.
Sara comes on looking so fine and classy, Farmer Chad hops off the tractor moseys into the studio. SMH Also, Chad, it's aster-isk, not a$$-trick. Oh well, still love you kids. Cheers!

Not by us, at least. We've done barrel proof Flights and a wheated Flight, but never this combo!

It would be difficult for me to do this blind because I feel each of these bourbons are pretty unique on their own (from my own experience) and I would know what I’m tasting even if it’s blind...thus my bias would show easily. But a fun watch nonetheless.
I think that happens frequently in these blind videos, not just here, where the taster is good enough to figure it out and rank them by preference.

Yep, it started this year (2020) and will be released 3 times a year. Next one should be released in May, and then again in September. Each release will have a different proof. We did an Uncorking episode recently if you wanna know more about it.

It's Bourbon Night Maybe not paid but wanting benefits or some sort of privilege. Spirit company’s can’t really advertise. So UA-cam and Social Media are their only chance for that. It just seems to be predictable and usually that means scripted. Like I said in the other comment. I really Like yalls channel. It’s probably my 2nd favorite “bourbon” channel maybe 1st. I Love the The way Chad does the videos. Quality is Great sound is always great. Lighting is Nice. I’m not just hating or trolling. I honestly care. If I’m seeing a trend I’m sure others are as well.
Well, we appreciate you watching, of course, but I hope we've buried the idea of us getting paid. If BT paid us and we put one of their products in last place, regardless if we put another one in first, I would imagine they would not be very happy. And yeah, as far as trends go, we have developed favorites as we've gone along, I really don't know how one couldn't. We don't really care one way or another if we stay in anyone's good graces, that's not why we do it, and at the end of the day, no one is paying us for our review so why would we care about making a certain distillery happy, but of course we're more likely to give something a glowing review if it fits in our flavor profile. I guess it's the trap all whiskey reviews fall into, you're going to like what you like and develop your taste and flavor profile. When you do blind rankings like we do, your taste profile is really all you have to go off of. It is what it is and the chips will fall where they fall.

Hahaha, thanks! After doing this for 4 years, you get pretty good at anticipating what some of the comments are going to be and you try to address them ahead of time.

Inconsistent. Sara didn’t seem to like WLW during the flight but puts it first. I think a lot of these are scripted to show favoritism towards Brands they don’t want to disappoint.
They have to keep their supply lines with the brands open. They are bought and paid for.
HAHAHA laughing at both comments here, because can either of you please explain how we didn't "disappoint" all of the brands represented in this Flight? More on that later, but first off, as we say in every episode, things always change for us in the second round, as they did here. Second, this episode, as they all are, are edited for time, which means a lot is cut out. 40 minutes worth of footage gets cut down to under 20, so of course little moments get cut, moments where opinions change. The entire "A / B" tasting moment is cut out in the interest of time because no one wants a 40 minute episode. Also, cutting some of those little moments out is just good editing. You don't want the audience to know what your order is going to be from the first 5 minutes. TV shows do the same thing. You want the audience to stick around for the reveal.
Now the other part. We've said it before, but I guess we have to say it again, we don't get bottles from distilleries, and the rare times we do, we disclose that info up top. We also don't receive sponsorship money from distilleries, that's just silly. What, if we didn't put WLW in first place people would stop buying it? BT isn't even on the KY Bourbon Trail anymore because they don't need to spend that money for advertising, let alone have the need to pay off UA-cam channels to give them a favorable review. And if they're just sending us bottles, why did we use a 2018 WLW? If we didn't want to disappoint BT then why did Sara put Weller in last place and Chad put it in third? And why would we be using a pick instead of a non-pick? Care to explain any of that, or did I guess wrong and you think Maker's is the one who "bought and paid" us? Except Maker's came in last for Chad. So it must be Heaven Hill then, except that came in third for Sara. Humm, I guess between the two of us we disappointed all of the brands.
It's Bourbon Night In that case it was bad editing for the most part. However a lot of reviewers give the Full Proof a low ranking especially the Store picks. I watch a lot of the review whiskey channels. I’ve noticed the same on a good bit of episodes. I love y’alls channel and the interaction between both of y’all. It just seems I can put the end results in order before y’all even taste them. For instance. If there is a EW product in a flight I know it will be high on Sara picks. Maybe not first but definitely 2nd because it seems she wants to be in good gracious with EW. I also know a lot of people give y’all shit about high proofs. That doesn’t bother me however it’s still a thing. I’m gonna watch the channel no matter what because I really do like y’all. I believe I’ve watched ever video. So I know y’all’s preferred brands and we all have our preferred brands and bottles. If you’re gonna do reviews make it honest. If you’re being honest. It’s not portrayed as being that way. It almost always seemed scripted. Also. To the point of being paid. Maybe you’re not getting paid but it seems like you’re trying to be or at least trying to get some benefits.
