She got to you, didn't she? By the end, you were begging to hear more. And that feeling demonstrates her songwriting genius. In less than 5 minutes she had you on the edge...
I like how she kind of relates dancing to love. “You asked me to dance, but I said dancing is a dangerous game” (cowboy like me) “But I don’t wanna dance, if I’m not dancing with you” (holy ground) “We’re dancing around the kitchen in the refrigerator light” (all too well) and yeah, they ended up together at the end of the song. she’s not gonna love again, like not gonna look for a new person cause she already found the love of her life
When I think of a cowboy in a business sense, it’s someone who doesn’t do what they said they would and rip you off! Also I interpret “I’m never gonna love again” as she doesn’t know whether they will stay together or not but she knows that she will never be able to replace this person, her perfect match and soulmate, regardless. No one will ever compare so if shit goes wrong she will ever love again 😢
My interpretation is that the narrator got some tragic karma-conned by the conman she fell in love with. She's "waiting by the phone" in case he calls her after leaving, but he doesn't. She's beaten at her own game. I suppose another interpretation could be that she'll never love anyone else again because they stayed together, but that "and I knew I'd pay for it" line suggests she fell in love and truly believed he loved her back, only for him to con her like they both did to all those old rich people. Heartbreaking, because she knew the kind of person he was and fell for him anyway. Every time I listen to this song, I can imagine it playing out like a movie. So good. Also, I think you're right about the cowboy = conman analogy. Cowboy can have a few different meanings, but in the wild west there weren't exactly set laws to abide by (or at least not a ton of sheriffs around to enforce those laws). Cowboys can be good, but they can also be swindlers and scoundrels, just like conmen. Old westerns play with that concept a lot, and the music in this song has an old school twang that makes me think of the wild west for sure.
She saying "I'm never gonna love again." means she's never gonna pretend falling in love or being in love with the older men. Because she already locked "it" down with another cowboy. They ended up together.
No the persona got her heart broken also by the other cowboy hence "never loving again". She, being also a con-woman, was aware of the guy's tricks but still fell in love. She knew it was coming
@@Alex-hv5zy they ended up together. They locked it down. Evermore has long reach of interpretations as to whether they ended up with goodbye or they stayed together.
Fun fact: This song is off of her Evermore album (2020) which is the follow-up to Folklore (2020), they are related albums, essentially part 2 of Folklore. They were released during the pandemic, and the type of music they are classified under is Alternative. If you really want to get into some master storytelling, with a different kind of musical sound, definitely check them out. I'm a newer fan of hers like yourself, and those albums are what solidified me as a lifelong fan. The amount of talent, maturity, and growth she has gone through since her first album is respectful. Note: These albums are not pop albums, so don't go into them expecting pop hits. Cowboy Like Me is a small look into the different kinds of sounds these albums have, as they are mainly about storytelling and experimenting with different sounds. A masterclass of its kind.
I’m a Swiftie and a fan of Marcus! If one wants real and emotional content, I urge you to listen to his self-titled album. It is a very raw and painful accounting of living through many years of sexual abuse. It hits hard. It is painfully beautiful.
@@randystalnaker6700 thanks Randy. It is powerful and very brave of him. Society scorns a man who survived sexual assault. Some chuckle and say that he had a great time, especially if the perp is female. Marcus doesn’t mention the gender. He is a strong survivor and a helluva musician. I’m glad that he & Taylor are friends.
I believe so hahaha. I'm never gonna love again aka, I'm never gonna fall in love again, because this is forever. Taylor loves taking a phrase and using it for the opposite meaning. I also believe that she wrote this song as a sort of alternate universe inspired by her own current relationship, so I'd like to think that yeah, they stayed together forever. Forever is the sweetest con. They don't con people anymore because now they're together for real.
Great reaction as always. My suggestion for you to do is "Treacherous" wich is MY PERSONAL FAVORITE Taylor Swift song of all time. See you next time buddy 👋
: one having qualities (such as recklessness, aggressiveness, or independence) popularly associated with cowboys: such as a : a reckless driver b : a business or businessperson operating in an uncontrolled or unregulated manner
I actually think that in the end they don’t stay together. You get some frases foreshadowing this ending like “I’m never going to love again” and “I know I’ll pay for it”. We see that they are both cons and that they are aware of this, but that doesn’t stop them from falling in love with each other and “playing their cards”. It’s really at the end when you can see where everything goes wrong. “The skeletons in both our closets plotted hard to fuck us up”, “the old men that I’ve swindled really did believe I was the one”, “and the ladies lunching have their stories about when you passed through town”. My interpretation is that they both really fall for each other but since they know that their partner was a con there is a point where they start doubting their relationship and doubting whether the other person is actually feeling the same way or just “playing them”. Because if everyone else thought that she was “the one” and now he is thinking
She is the one, what makes him different from the rest of her “subjects”. If this man is always “telling all the rich folks everything they wanna hear like it could be love” than she probably has doubts about the veracity of the things he tells her and whether he really means them, etc. Also at the end she says “now you hang from my lips like the gardens of Babylon”. I think she is referencing the fact that it his love for her, or their love story as a whole, is something that if she believes it to be true, then it is amazing and fantastic and fascinating, but she will never have actual proof of that love (at least the kind of proof that she wants, the a=b kind of proof that cannot be questioned). This is like the gardens, there has never been any factual proof of the existence of this gardens, it will only become a wonder if the world if you believe that those amazing gardens existed, and for that there needs to be a leap of faith, a part of believing. (Which Taylor’s character is not willing to take) I don’t know if I explained myself lol
She’s playing a grifter, and meets the fellow grifter at the same tennis club where they were trying to swindle people. Yep con people. I think they end up together because his boots underneath her bed, she locked it down. But, forever is a sweet con, because there is no forever. I think they stay together. 4 Debbie’s yes!!
I don't know what "Now you hang from my lips, like the Gardens of Babylon" means, and TBH, I don't really care. It's just such a gorgeous, sensual lyric.
The HANGING Gardens of Babylon, considered one of the wonders of the world. Only, historically it is debatable if they ever really existed. Excellent lyric, giving the context of this song.
Yes they stay together, at least in my interpretation they stay together. Two con people fall in love and they'll never love anyone else again cause they found each other.

it's a good hook, dancing with someone can be intimate, even if it's not sexy
