Good day, I have a few questions unrelated to the video, can I live in Paris without being fluent in French, or only beginning to learn French and what about crime in Paris. I am a pharmacist (black ), thinking about moving to Paris for retirement .
I believe many people, including Tiffanie (if I’m not wrong), are not yet fluent in the language but live in France. Generally, you don’t need to be fluent to live in France. However, learning as much as you can will only help you in the long run. Of course, you should probably have enough knowledge of the language to get around (shop, ask questions, etc...). Also, there are actually many places in Paris that offer French courses for Anglophones! As for crime, I would say to just be cautious and aware. Just like you would be in any city. To elaborate, I’d say just be aware of the way you carry yourself. I’d say you should walk around confidently and try to make yourself not stand out because pickpockets in Paris tend to target possible tourists. One thing you should know is that you should not sign anything on the side of the street! It is common for pickpockets to have fake petitions so that they can distract you while you’re getting robbed! Generally Paris is a great city and I have no doubt that you’d love it there, but just be mindful!
For the metro ticket, daily or monthly pass, does the price depend on the zone? For eg. in London you can split your pass, so if you're only travelling within zone 1-2 which is proper central London it's one price and then zone 2-6 is a different price. There also used to be a zone 1-4 & a zone 1-6 which obviously was the most expensive due to the inclusion of zone 1...i think they still make these for tourists but its a lot easier just to get friends an oyster and just too up as you go as it does get capped and if you use the bus you can pay 1 fare for upto 3hop-ons if you make your trip is within 1 hr I think, so great for running errands. Is that the same in Paris?
Honestly, Paris isn't that expensive compared to most US cities. And quality of life is so much better. For example, in the US, if you're lucky you can get a one bedroom for about $900 (I'm using where I am in a city in South Carolina). Electricity is about $40/mo, wifi $56/mo, then groceries about $120/mo. But then you need a car because public transport is garbage, so you have a monthly car payment, gas, insurance, taxes. And there's nothing for free here, restaurants are expensive. ugh. >.< And don't get me started on the phone bill.
On the one end, French is a wellfare state so I do prefer to live in France than in the US. But on the other hand French wages are lower than American ones so yes for a French person with an average French salary Paris is very expensive, especially since we have way cheaper cities. As someone who experienced both city and countryside in France, big cities and suburbs have a lot of public transports ( even if people who work in trains often protest for nothing so your train can be late or cancelled ) but if you live on the countryside away from big cities there isn't many, even not at all in small villages so a lot of French people still need a car.
What about rent leases? Do landlords hike up the rent every year? Also if someone isn't in the corporate world, is it harder to find a job as an American? I'm an academic Librarian, but I speak Spanish and English.
The rents evolve according to an index given by the state. So it increases every year but very slightly. Overall the tenants are very protected. For work I don't know, but outside the big cities, we speak rather badly English in France. Just, my sister is a college librarian in France. She had to pass a specific diploma.

You should consider applying to a program called TAPIF! It’s a French government program that allows fluent English speakers with, I believe, an intermediate-advanced level of French to teach English to k-12 students. It’s 8 months (October-April). I believe they provide just under 1,000€/month. But you only work about 12 hrs/wk and can supplement your income with other jobs! The application cycle opens in October and ends in January if I remember correctly. I think it’s a lot more competitive to get placed in Paris (probably requires advanced level of French and some English teaching experience) but it’s still an opportunity to live in France for 8 months 😌!! I got accepted in 2016 and didn’t go because I wanted to go back to school for another semester 😔 but I think I’m going to apply again this year 😄!! How does these prices compare to where you're currently living?! Keep in mind that salaries in France are typically lower than salaries in the United States!!
For your informations, Inner city Paris has the second top cost of living of the world after Singapore. Not everyones as the same lifestyle or means, but be careful, Prices in other area of France are way lower.

Hi Tiff, I don't know if you'll read this, but I just wanted to thank you. I'm moving to Paris in 20 days and I needed some guidance, your videos are GOLD. I wanted to ask you if the 19th arrondissement is dangerous to live in, or is it fine ? Thank you girl
Hey ! What arrondissement do you leave in and what electricity provider are you with ? I’m French, lived in Paris now in a suburb close to Paris and I’m so surprised with the prices you’re presenting. I live alone in a 40 square meter appartement and I pay not more than 35 euros per month for electricity and 15 euros per month for insurance. Also a 30m2 appartement inside Paris can be from 800-900 euros if you don’t mind living in more popular yet safe areas.
I live in NYC and it’s crazy that the cost of living in Paris is lower compared to NYC. Even when I visited London in 2019, I didn’t find it as expensive compared to NYC, especially compared to the quality of food? Can a Parisian with an average salary afford €1100 rent?
No, French wages are way lower than American ones that's why most people who work in Paris live in the suburbs or even more than an hour away to have a better lifestyle than in the suburbs. Other French cities are way cheaper. An average salary in France is often between 1400 € and 2000 € per month ( even lower for some people ) and landlords often ask you to have an income three times bigger than the rent, that's why students need a garantor.
@@jujublue4426 Am I understanding that french suburbs are not very safe or compared to the french cities, not as safe? I guess I’m thinking of how in America suburbs are more residential and therefore safer compared to the cities, except for certain crime such as property crime.

I'm surprised by your hair beeing done for 50 €. My wife, and every woman we know, pay something like 60 - 75, depending on the town, the place, and what is done exactly, of course (wash / cut, color or not, etc).
I live in Wellington NZ and it costs about $1600 a month in living, but usually more honestly. Crazy that paris is almost cheaper than nz when it offers so many more experiences and things to see and do... wish we could travel! 🥰
The 15th isn't expensive at all. The 6th is very expensive and sooooo posh. That's the area to be. And for transportation, if you're a student you must be 26 and under. I found that out the hard way since being an older student isn't a thing there like in the states.
There are doctorates in France but most students only study for 5 years, the ones studying longer are rarer. But you still need to study longer when you're a medical student or want to lecture in university for example. Sometimes there are older adults but they are rare.
General cost of living is about the same here in Australia, except for French cheeses of course, which is obviously due to freight costs. Beauty treatments are a little more expensive though, however wages are higher here so that would explain the higher costs.
Hey Koko where in Australia do you live? I always thought that Australia is a lot more expensive than European cities 🙈 btw if you’re looking for something to watch, I have a channel with content from London, Italy and lifestyle videos☺️
I know you didn’t like your apartment, but how did you like the 15th. Where did you live there? And no, compared to California, especially San Francisco Bay or say, London, Paris is a downright bargain!

For your informations, Inner city Paris has the second top cost of living of the world after Singapore. Not everyones as the same lifestyle or means, but be careful, Prices in other area of France are way lower.
That Van Gogh exhibition is in Australia atm, everything is back open here.
Hey Tiffany, I just saw your video and I spend a good amount of time in Paris :). I wanted to let you know that for transportation, you should get a Navigo if you haven’t thought about it already. It’s gets you on all forms of transportation (bus, RER, metro, transilien etc) and it lasts you like 5+ years. Let me know if you want more info on that happy to help
She said she had a Navigo in the video! 😉
Hi Tiff! It's so refreshing to see how enthusiastic you are about Paris! I've had the luxury of visiting Paris, and fell in love with the city!💛💚💙 I will be back again!😇
Thank you for this. I plan on moving to Paris in a few years. You are teaching me so much in what to expect! I will be there in June 2022 to scope out other areas in France as well!
For real. I live in a suburb of Paris as well and I know people who live in Paris and prices are not that high.
I live in NYC and it’s crazy that the cost of living in Paris is lower compared to NYC. Even when I visited London in 2019, I didn’t find it as expensive compared to NYC, especially compared to the quality of food? Can a Parisian with an average salary afford €1100 rent?
Actually no - hence why there were the gillets jaunes strike!
@@jannellmcbride1922 It depend you have rich suburb (west of paris like Versaille or Neuilly) and more pore suburb (principally to the est) like Sevran or Bobigny but inside these suburb you have calm sectors and only few hot points principally building of public housing with low rent (it's simple is literraly long bar of appartment or 15 floors towers) in fact people are not very dangerous they just sell weed and make noise just avoir these sector the night if you are a woman but generally they are not very violents
it's not like USA it's more complicated to found a weapon here it's rare and they don't use on others people if they found a gun it's more for rival gangs members
generaly it's more safe I prefer to walk in Aulney the night than downtown or east los angeles or san francisco the day
Worth noting that the brunch prices are the total cost, tax/tip included!
I pay $7 in NYC for eyebrow threading, so it's similar to Paris 😉
$7 is an amazing price😍 where do you get that?? Hahah
Btw if you’re looking for something to watch, I have videos from London, Italy and other places where I travel ☺️
Amazing video and is always good to put more videos like these
Glad you enjoyed it!!
Hello! Thanks for the video! I've been to Paris it's not so expensive as they kept telling me. In Greece the prices are the same, even worse, and the salaries really low.
Which arondissment is your apartment in? Working at a place in the 15th arondissement so thinking of getting a place around there but it's pricey.
Expensive city. Thanks for the work. Thanks for Financial Transparancy. Think Global... Act local. It is important.
I live in south of France and for me Paris is very expansive. My flat is twice bigger for a little price and a coffee in a terrasse is cheaper etc. Can't leave in Paris because I need space to live ahah
Thanks alot for this detailed breakdown, may i know what is net total you spend monthly?
Merci pour les sous-titres en francais 😊
De rien!! 😉
Caf isn't just for students. It's for everybody :)
France gives money to foreigners? Time to move.
Here we go with this CAF thing. NO France does not give money to foreigners just like that 😒😡
It’s just like welfare in the US. There are requirements to be eligible.
@@sarahferguson8967 😂😂😂 thanks for the clarification
It depends on incomes, if your salary is too high CAF doesn't help you.
Not really eating french food .explore some of real France. Kind of Frenchish experience. Paris caters to international crowd.
I agree, it’s always great to explore smaller towns, they represent better the country! Btw if you’re looking for something to watch, I have videos from London, Italy and other places where I travel ☺️
Thanks for your helpful video💓
Thanks for sharing the details of what Paris is like Tiffany ✌🏾🙋🏾♀️
LMAO at the massage parlors having happy endings haha
I'm surprised by your hair beeing done for 50 €. My wife, and every woman we know, pay something like 60 - 75, depending on the town, the place, and what is done exactly, of course (wash / cut, color or not, etc).
Wow! Yeah here I really only get braiding /crochet done and usually wash my hair myself too!
@@TiffanieDavis I thought your hair was natural. But whatever it looks great.
How do you maintain such a beautiful hair with vegan diet?
I live in Wellington NZ and it costs about $1600 a month in living, but usually more honestly. Crazy that paris is almost cheaper than nz when it offers so many more experiences and things to see and do... wish we could travel! 🥰
Whoa and I thought Paris was expensive, there are many cities in France which are way cheaper than Paris.
Thank you, these videos are so useful!
That is helpful. I’m about to go to Lille next year for my study. And now I roughly know if my budget is enough. Very appreciate!
Lille is very cheaper than Paris. Dont worry.
Thank you. Keep eating well and living well.
Hey Tiffanie! What arrondissement are you in?
Love it💖 thank you, sister! 💖
Ur hair is beautiful! Thanks for the tips
Try Orange 🍊for your phone company.
RER accepts the monthly pass
can you update a 2022 cost of living? ty!
I Think Bouygues is Cheap and very functional.
Btw Movie monthly pass is around 22 euros, 34 euros is for a couple I think.
.-)
General cost of living is about the same here in Australia, except for French cheeses of course, which is obviously due to freight costs.
Beauty treatments are a little more expensive though, however wages are higher here so that would explain the higher costs.
Hey Koko where in Australia do you live?
I always thought that Australia is a lot more expensive than European cities 🙈
btw if you’re looking for something to watch, I have a channel with content from London, Italy and lifestyle videos☺️
Do you need a roommate?
Check out Lidl supermarket you’ll save money on food. Their stuff is great not a huge vegan option tho.
Really enjoy your vlogs
I know you didn’t like your apartment, but how did you like the 15th. Where did you live there?
And no, compared to California, especially San Francisco Bay or say, London, Paris is a downright bargain!
The 15th was okay but not my favorite arrondissement to live in - it's more so families & older couples though. I lived right by the Charles Michel metro stop!
Yama, I agree! I’m in SoCal and I’m shocked by how much less it’s in Paris compared to how much I pay.
@@Gloria0667 Yess but keep in mind salaries are like 40% lower than the U.S.!
@@TiffanieDavis oh I’m definitely keeping that in mind. Based on what I found through the info you provided in your program, I feel like it’s still comparable.
What’s the best bank for expats in France?
I'm with Societé Generale - it's the only one I've been with since living here, haven't explored the others yet.
Love your videos.
Why don't go you with Orange; it is reliable. I had a good plan . I am in canada and I still have my french number and I pay 7.99 euro per months. I used to live in Colombes because my work was at La Defense and it was the best decision that I have made actually..
