I was part of a Gretsch group and while I did learn some stuff, I found it to be a big brag fest and a competition to see who had the most "toys". The last straw was when I discovered that one of the guys was basically stalking me online. Yuck. I also had a professional, somewhat famous musician give some really horrid advice on Twitter. So you are spot on Phil, you just don't know who you can trust.

I remember listening to a few gear heads on FB groups and then months later being shocked when they finally posted a video and you realized they could barely play.
Made me realize that the guy who could tell me all about types of tone knobs on every Les Paul should have put more time into practicing instead of researching instruments.

The Fender Forum (FDP) by Chris Greene was great!
No bs was tolerated. Many posters backed their knowledge with video and/or references.
You could inquire about any gear or really just about anything and get real knowledgeable responses quickly, not just Fender. If your lawn mower broke, there was people on there that would help you with that, lol. I hope the archives are still up on the internet.

I remember a couple years ago when all kinds of channels all at once, put out videos talking about how if you're doing a paid video you have to say so, and that there were certain, very big channels, who were consistently failing to disclose their products were provided. So I asked around, and nobody would tell me who everyone was talking about. I thought it was valuable information, but nobody wanted to be that guy and actually name the channels in question. I still haven't figured out who it was, and that still irritates me because it was all the best channels who did these videos, and they were the individuals who wouldn't give the important information even though they were the ones who were raising the alarm. Still really bugs me.

I'll never have bad feelings about online forums(not Facebook) because they taught me the value of what the plastics, screws, patina and wire coating of classic guitars, think 59 LPs, have on the quality of their tone. If you weren't rocking NOS butyrate pickup bobbins can you REALLY say you play guitar?
Also, they taught me about "wooly" and "hairy" pickups and "haunting mids". I will forever be thankful in learning that guitar players are a special kind of gullible and fall for all the marketing hype.
Facebookers just collect the "special kind of stupid" folks and I mostly just read for the laughs.

The toxicity of the online guitarverse actually says more about the average member of the guitar hobby than it does about the Internet. (I said AVERAGE member, not all members.) The Internet doesn't create character, it merely reveals it. The guitar community isn't exactly populated by the best and brightest. The Internet simply allows them to display who they are without the social costs incurred in real-world interactions.

Forums are an echo chamber, to fit in you have to adopt the same rhetoric as the rest. At some point I gave up on forums because I found myself making product recommendation, coaching technique, etc. because I knew those were the answers, not because I was experienced or competent myself. When I realized I was a fraud, and how easy it was to become a convincing fraud, it made me question the credibility of the community on the forums, they were most likely all frauds too.

I've found it funny that many of the people that live on these forums are not really good players, I've clicked on videos people post of thier playing and it ends up being a clueless person who doesn't know how to play. I'll figure out what's good on my own.

YES! I was part of a Takamine group on Facebook and there was a woman there who was buying up all of these limited edition Tak's in the thousands of dollars...and she didn't even play. I ended up getting the information I was looking for and unjoined that group.

Paying $85 for a mechanical switch is obscene! Especially when you consider that it's been on the market for 17 years, it's not like they are trying to recoup R&D costs or something.

Bass players are worse than guitarists, because with guitarists you just have to deal with a big ego. Bass players are usually hiding major insecurities about being the "lesser" band member by amping up the traditionalism and holier than thou mindset. It is utterly exhausting

YT can be toxic, too. Anyone can put up something that bashes something, and then a slew of vids will pop up following suit. Additionally, a thousand people keep telling people that cheap POS guitars are just fine!

    • @StephGV2

@@StephGV2 The thing is, it's a crap shoot buying $89 on Amazon. Some are okay, but others are really bad. A total newbie will be unable to tell where on that curve their purchase lies. They may believe all guitars play that poorly, sound that bad, or hurt your fingers, and decide "it's too hard" to learn guitar. I've met many of these people, and when you put a good guitar in their hands their eyes light up and they say "I never knew!" It doesn't need to be expensive, and even the POS guitars can be made playable, maybe even sound good. The videos that say POS are okay should include advice that you need to have a resource to check it for you, set it up a little, maybe some work (like nut filing or intonation) and for an extra $75-100 you have a playable guitar. They should also ALWAYS say "But y'know, for $50 more you can have brand name (Squire by Fender) from Musician's Friend or Sweetwater. 99% odds your guitar will be pretty good right out of the box without all the rest of the BS, coupled with a reasonable return policy. They'll also be easier to sell, and maintain more value." I have witnessed (and purchased) a number of cheap POS instruments. $89 is exactly how much I wanted to spend on the 34" Glarry electric bass to buy for my grandkids that don't play. A student instrument. Fortunately, I am a guitar tech, and set it up to play comfortably and well. The Rogue bass I bought marked down from $180 to $99 needed to have the jack replaced before I could plug a cable into it because it was defective. I don't hate POS gear, I just think You-Tubers should not imply that it's "just about as good" as the actual good stuff. I just hate to see people discouraged from learning the instrument because their gear makes it almost impossible to enjoy. The topic of the post is about how online forums can be toxic. My comment turns that around a little, describing how less-than-good advice can be spread as easily.

TGP can be toxic but it can also be quite helpful and a resource for obtaining hard-to-find gear or gear at a reasonable price.
