Eh, I kinda disliked that mini "controversy", if only because I also jokingly mispronounce words all the time for humor, which she was doing there. The fact that people thought she was being serious was kinda eye-rolling. Is that that rare? Saying "Sham-pagn" for Champagne or "Tar-zhey" instead of "Target"?
So, it's physics that makes my pan heat up quicker if I put the lid on it. You've no idea how much better I feel knowing that - I was worried it might be magic. Phew!
Her video was about ramen cooking instruction right? No offense but that as instructional as me cooking instant noodles. I also add vegetables, egg and seasoning...I think I use more seasoning than her...
What a bizzare bowl of ramen! It also looked like the bok choy and radish were "arranged" even more by someone else before she set the egg in the bowl and sprinkled on the green onion.
I worked in a Korean kitchen for about 4 months. One day the owner shoved his cousin into the kitchen for the Korean kitchen manager to deal with (he had to teach the boy how to hold a knife). While they spoke korean to each other, every now and then you'd hear the English "slice". We asked him why he was saying Slice, and if Slice didnt have a korean word for it. Worry not friends, rest assured in Korean there is a word for Slice. He just forgot what the word was, living in the US for so long.
just spending a couple months as a student in Russia, when I came home, I forgot how to say "table" and "lorry" in my own mother tongue and had to explain like "you know the thing we sit at when we eat". it was so funny and embarrassing at the same time, as the word always only came to my mind in Russian.
Hahaha the actual Korean word for the noun "slice(s)" is rather an old expression "pyun" and only older generations still use the term. For the verb "slice", you must have heard them say "Sseol-eo"
As an indian, we dont grow up with chopsticks so its hard to use for me. But my younger brother loves all types of japanese and chinese dishes, so he learned to use chopsticks quite quickly and easily by just practicing at home picking up grains of rice. So it should be easy to learn if you really want to and put in the work.
I forced myself to use chopsticks the right way too. It’s not just the sake of “proper” but much more comfortable when holding it right. After holding it like a pen for long time. I learned that from sneakily watching older kids in elementary school canteen, not the best way to practice I guess 😅
I've been using chopsticks for so long, when I tried to remember when and how I learned I couldn't. I'm American, so it wasn't like I learned at home. I think I must have taught myself like your brother, because I still can pick up the rice one grain at a time.
From the videos and recipes I've seen of people making proper ramen from scratch it actually looks like quite a lot of work and time is put in especially when it comes to making the broth. That's kinda why instant ramen is a thing cause all the hard work has been done for you. Weird that this video basically did instant ramen but in glossy soft focus.
The problem is, it isn't even ramen. Instant ramen most people have in the cupboard, is closer to ramen than this thing. At the least, one should use the correct noodle (Ramen) if you want to call it ramen. The noodle as Uncle Roger says is typically yellow, due to the alkali that is infused into the noodle (the kansui) that turns it the yellow color. The noodle here was so white, it didn't even look like it was instant ramen noodles. The broth is all wrong and the toppings are all wrong. Sure they added green onions at the end but you can find green onions in many of the noodle dishes including udon and soba. It is more closer to a hot pot style dish with noodle than it is ramen. Its like putting carrots, tomato, spinach, mushrooms, into a beef broth and calling it New England Clam Chowder. All these people are just calling it ramen since that brings the views. Its basically clickbait, which from a professional channel like the BBC is quite low.
Ramen is "vendor food" - a thing in Asia. It is as complicated and quite a hassle to prepare, cook, and clean the mess thereafter, not to mention how long it takes to properly make one. It is just like Vietnamese Pho - which broth took overnight to cook. It is never meant to be cooked at home, or as casually and aeshtetically shown by Nigella Lawson and her BBC crew. People often romanticise foreign food the way people treat Italian pasta - which can be easily recreated back at home. Yes, most of our popular restaurant food is not really home cooking, in contrast with Italian food. Nobody expect everyone live in the middle of major city have a massive 18,000 BTU wok burner. As uncle Roger often touts, Asian houses have "outdoor kitchen" - similar to western houses' BBQ patio, where we cook our messiest and best food.
I'm an Indian student studying in Mexico City. Here Japanese cuisine is very popular and restaurants serve food with chopsticks. The waiters look at you funny if ask for a fork, but I try my best to eat with chopsticks then I give up eat with the fork.
That little clip you spliced in near the end of the ramen shop made me really crave a proper ramen. Too bad there aren't any good ramen shops around here!

I even ask my brother to do the timing, it only take two minutes to fall asleep at most! No jokes!!! I swear to god!!! Learned in middle school how to use chopsticks. My mother worked at a Chinese restaurant and I would hangout after school. The owners son taught me to use chopsticks and I taught him how to use a fork. Even got to eat free at the buffet for helping be a busboy. I even made myself sick from eating too much. Their Cantonese chicken is still the best I've ever had. Still to this day have yet to have anything else to compare
I've always thought Nigella was overrated so I was fine with Uncle Roger roasting her. In answer to your chopstick question. I had 4 children. Anytime we made Asian food or ordered Chinese takeout, I made the children eat with chopsticks. Now adults, the only one who still uses a fork is their Dad.
It's honestly a wonderful skill because it helps you slow down when eating. Smaller bites and slower eating just gives the opportunity for your stomach to send the satisfied signals to your brain.
I'm Chinese and as a kid I always struggled with using chopsticks and would use forks instead. But one day I just picked up chopsticks and started using it so I guess some dormant chopstick genes kicked in randomly LMAO
Lucky you, nearly 20 here, and I cannot use them much.😢 Only for something basic such as eating noodles, but it has to be these big chunky wooden ones instead of the nice little shiny metal ones.
Not only do I know how to eat with chop sticks, I also keep them around at the house and use them a fair bit in the kitchen. They're super handy for a variety of cooking tasks.
Would love to hear Chef James talk more about learning Spanish and the experience of his cultural immersion in Spain. Maybe to bring back a mini local-travel vlog 😁
I started using chopsticks at home in my teens in the hopes of slowing down my eating. Instead I got real good using chopsticks. Speedy eating with any utensils 😁 thanks for the fun of the review.
I like to see Chef James' reactions. Usually, it's a nice, big smile. This time, it's like, curious...why is she doing this? The spork would be fun to have. I hadn't seen one before that wasn't plastic, but how often would you use it. Looking forward to more videos.
Hi Chef James I recently found your channel and I’m laughing hysterically! Your commentary on Uncle John’s commentary is funny and also I appreciate the chef teaching tips! Thanks again.
I loved the bit where you said "how easily it is for you to to forget your own grammar", that really drove the point home! :D Seriously though. Excellent video chef James! Always a pleasure.
Chef Jaime! I also struggled when I was a kid, coming from japanese descent is quite shameful, grandpa, grandma, mom and dad could not teach me how in a successful manner and ironically I mastered them until I was able to read the chinglish instructions in the wrapper! You have a gold mine assured reacting to Any BBC content, it´s almost as if they hate food... Now we need a good ramen reaction, Alex made one recently plus his videos are really nice!
Oh old memories already watching this episode on Nigel's channel, still hilarious. Your stoic reaction to most of dirty humour is kinda cute in a way ^^''
A new subscriber from Thailand coming from Uncle's suggested video trail..... i like the style and professionalism with a different presentation of information. Chopsticks are something we use a lot in Thailand but I cannot actually recall when I was able to use them. But yeah forks and spoons are our goto choice of utensils.... spork is like.... camping
About the forgetting the language part - you don’t have to live in another country. I live in Russia, but we are taught in English, and you forget the language esp when you are stuck learning offline for a long time. I remember walking to the store after online classes and hearing people speak Russian and be like: wow I never heard it in such a long while…
New to this channel, just watched two of your reviews with Uncle Roger. Fun watching you laugh along with his commentary. Staying to hopefully up my own cooking skills.
its always the same: james uploads video - cant resists watching - get hungry. at least its perfect time to start cooking in europe this time. thanks, chef! edit: the reaction at 8:04 made my day :D
Chef James, I came for the soothing and educational commentary, but I stayed for that wry wicked grin of yours 😉 would make you a bowl of ramen any day!
I'm a seasoned chopsticks user but yes I understand the struggle of using it... not to mention there are Korean restaurants that only provide flat chopsticks. Those are a nightmare for me to use but that is probably a skill issue XD Thanks so much for the video! ^^*
Thank you so much for all of your wonderfully educational and -- as for these reaction vids -- hilarious as well content! I used to be a mere ignorant food enjoyer (though I did visit Thailand and the home of Uncle Roger, Malaysia, as a youngster, and man was that food absolutely amazing!!) before eventually dating a traditionally trained Italian and French chef woman for a couple of years (who taught me a lot of good basic techniques for just about anything; chopping, mis en place, making risottos, mother sauces, you name it) and being drilled like some kind of army recruit in the kitchen. xD It was a lot of stressful work but it did make me an above average home cook for sure. Recently I have been looking out for ways to expand my culinary knowledge and by watching basically all of your videos I have picked up so many good things I hadn't been taught or thought of before. Props to you Chef James, I like all of your videos and subscribe to your channel (rarely take my time to do that kind of stuff but I really wanted to help however I could get your channel to that coveted 1m sub range eventually, and besides your content truly deserves such treatment from yours truly!). I also try to pimp your channel out to all the more or less cooking-interested people I know, haha.
I've been able to use chopsticks since I was young and I learned using it probably in one of the most spartan way possible, by transferring uncooked grains of rice from one bowl to another. You could also use something bigger like beads if its too difficult.
Honestly, I learned how when I was 10 years old by sitting at a food court in a mall and starring at an Asian couple eating until I figured it out lol. I'm sure they were creeper out
This has to be best uncle roger reaction videos. Keep up solid work james. Watch at least 1hr a day, mostly when im eating my uncle roger inspired chicken fried rice
I remember as a child looking at the back of a disposable chopsticks package and figuring out how to use them pretty easily from that... As I grew up I found it very surprising how many people have trouble with them, including my parents.
@Chef James Makinson J.O. has the money to challenge Roger to make some dish, hire an expert to prep how to make it with all the best equipment and ingredients, and do a video where he makes Roger call him Uncle! That would get views! PS. I've watched your subs grow fast, keep working on a collaboration, you'll be making fried rice faster than you think! 😉👍
Also, ambrosia in the U.S. is a mixed fruit salad with whipped cream as dressing. It first became popular in the 50's, IIRC, and now is bought at delis almost exclusively by the elderly.

I’m with Nigella on the radish love, and I’m borderline obsessed with her pots (Iittala Tools - I got one from the factory shop a while ago and it’s genuinely so nice) - but other than that, miss me with her version of ramen 😅
That was incredibly entertaining and funny to watch, even if not quite as educational as you usually do it. You are still great when you show your humorous side!
I agree with the lighting and I volunteer to help Nigela finding some other use for the room. Not sorry children. Yes I can eat with chopsticks but I had to learn it from a vietnamnese colleague
In my Japanese family as a kid, I used this chopstick with circular holders on the correct holding points on the chopsticks. So it's basically muscle memory when holding a regular chopstick. Surprisingly, I've heard from some south east asian friends from Singapore that they dont know how to use chopsticks.
Hahaha, I cannot use chopsticks for the life of me - what a true disgrace to the asian world.. though I never have been to Asia before (doubt that would excuse me at all, and yes, I do have Asian blood running through me).
Been watching a lot of your videos lately. You seem so humble. Also you should tell us about those "pranks" you've pulled. Sounds interesting! Love your stuff. Also I never tried eating with chopsticks when I was a kid. I tried as an adult. It came very easy for me. My ex was pissed...
I admit initially I thought that someone reacting to a reaction is a dumb format, boy was I wrong. I love your vids James. You balance the comedic element of Nigel with your calmness, niceness and knowledge, and I dig it. Really like your content.
Im pretty sure the "soy sauce" she is putting in at 10:13 is fish sauce. Only fish sauce has that small opening combined in that kind of wrapping and glass... Its too little regardless tho.. Btw I love watching you react to uncle roger videos. You 2 fit together really well.
I didn’t even think about the rubber band thing. Thank you for the tip! I’m going to a Japanese steakhouse in October for my birthday so I’ll remember that.
Ordered some chinese, put on a movie and sat down to eat, only to notice I forgot to get a fork. Well, I am not getting up at this point so I googled how to eat with chopsticks and off we went. I was 40 at the time, turns out it was much easier than advertised.
I love eating with chop sticks. It was a bit weird at first but it honestly ended up coming easier for me than others. I attribute this to my lifelong love affair with all kinds of food.
When I was 12-13 my parents took the whole family to Lancarote during winter for a week or 2 (dont remember). For new years we went to a Chinese restaurant. At that restaraunt we were given chinese silk coats. It felt so nice and made us feel like royalty. They had a stove top in the middle of the restaurant with tables around it, so we got to watch them prepare the food. I ordered egg fried rice. It was all so nice I decided to show some respect by learning to eat every grain of rice with chopsticks despite never trying in the past. Thats how I learned to eat with chopsticks. It took 1 meal.
My dad taught me how to use chopsticks when I was probably around ten and I had a knack for it. Hilariously, I visited an authentic japanese restaurant in the US and the owner stepped over to my table just to tell me that I use them better than he does. Not sure if he was serious but I appreciated the compliment, lol. I really enjoy using chopsticks. An elegant utensil for a more civilized age. I even bought a set of cooking sticks in japan last year and now use them when cooking asian dishes (like ramen or fried rice, lol).
Hi James. I was born in Texas and learned how to use chopsticks successfully around five years old. It came from my Dad who served in the military for 22 years before I was born so he learned how to use chopsticks while he was stained overseas and was thrilled to teach me how to use them😊 😊😊😊

This half-asian here definitely cannot use them at all. 🤣🤣
I'm Chinese and as a kid I always struggled with using chopsticks and would use forks instead. But one day I just picked up chopsticks and started using it so I guess some dormant chopstick genes kicked in randomly LMAO
Lucky you, nearly 20 here, and I cannot use them much.😢
Only for something basic such as eating noodles, but it has to be these big chunky wooden ones instead of the nice little shiny metal ones.
Haha I can try travel videos are not easy
8:06 Chef James becoming more slick with the humor.
im more sarcastic in real life ;) haha
yes brooo Fr I like it so much !!!!!
@@ChefJamesMakinson Rly need to show it little more :D
😉
I started using chopsticks at home in my teens in the hopes of slowing down my eating. Instead I got real good using chopsticks. Speedy eating with any utensils 😁 thanks for the fun of the review.
I love how your personality shines through! Can we have more of this, than the polished, restricted version please 💜💜💜
I like to see Chef James' reactions. Usually, it's a nice, big smile. This time, it's like, curious...why is she doing this? The spork would be fun to have. I hadn't seen one before that wasn't plastic, but how often would you use it. Looking forward to more videos.
haha 😂
Hi Chef James I recently found your channel and I’m laughing hysterically! Your commentary on Uncle John’s commentary is funny and also I appreciate the chef teaching tips! Thanks again.
Thanks so much!
I loved the bit where you said "how easily it is for you to to forget your own grammar", that really drove the point home! :D
Seriously though. Excellent video chef James! Always a pleasure.
Thank you! Haha it is a bit annoying sometimes especially when you forget some words and sayings haha
😂 I Need to review more bbc videos!
"Why's she hanging all the colander from the ceiling?" Well, it's a torture room for Uncle Roger
Oh old memories already watching this episode on Nigel's channel, still hilarious. Your stoic reaction to most of dirty humour is kinda cute in a way ^^''
Haha thank you
A new subscriber from Thailand coming from Uncle's suggested video trail..... i like the style and professionalism with a different presentation of information.
Chopsticks are something we use a lot in Thailand but I cannot actually recall when I was able to use them. But yeah forks and spoons are our goto choice of utensils.... spork is like.... camping
Awesome, thank you!
About the forgetting the language part - you don’t have to live in another country. I live in Russia, but we are taught in English, and you forget the language esp when you are stuck learning offline for a long time. I remember walking to the store after online classes and hearing people speak Russian and be like: wow I never heard it in such a long while…
Haha true
@@ChefJamesMakinson Just finished the video, love the content. This one is not as educational, but great fun nonetheless!
New to this channel, just watched two of your reviews with Uncle Roger. Fun watching you laugh along with his commentary. Staying to hopefully up my own cooking skills.
I hope you will enjoy the rest! :)
its always the same: james uploads video - cant resists watching - get hungry. at least its perfect time to start cooking in europe this time. thanks, chef!
edit: the reaction at 8:04 made my day :D
Haha I'm glad to hear! :)
@@ChefJamesMakinson sameeee, the way you sound so indignated is kinda rare and so hilarious
Chef James, I came for the soothing and educational commentary, but I stayed for that wry wicked grin of yours 😉 would make you a bowl of ramen any day!
Haha 😄thank you!
I'm a seasoned chopsticks user but yes I understand the struggle of using it... not to mention there are Korean restaurants that only provide flat chopsticks. Those are a nightmare for me to use but that is probably a skill issue XD
Thanks so much for the video! ^^*
You are welcome!
Korean metal chop sticks are so hard to use!
For me the glossy pointed plastic Chinese sticks are the worst. Very little gripping surface and super slippery too.
Colour me clueless, but there are different types of chopstick!?
@Michael Collins Very cool...thank you for that!
Thank you so much!! :)
I've been able to use chopsticks since I was young and I learned using it probably in one of the most spartan way possible, by transferring uncooked grains of rice from one bowl to another. You could also use something bigger like beads if its too difficult.
😉
Honestly, I learned how when I was 10 years old by sitting at a food court in a mall and starring at an Asian couple eating until I figured it out lol. I'm sure they were creeper out
I absolutely love how comfortable you are getting reviewing Uncle Roger reactions!
I really want to see you two reviewing a video together.
Me too! :)
Uncle Roger is hilarious. Yes hardly learnt a thing from Nigella except what she puts in her Ramen. I can use chop sticks. Great video James.
Thank you!
😉
Bro, I love watching you review uncle roger. I didn’t mind it being less educational, your faces you made were priceless. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Haha good to know!
Uncle Roger gets a dig in on Jamie Oliver every video now. Its become part of his act. Oliver should someday respond. It will be epic!
😂
@Chef James Makinson J.O. has the money to challenge Roger to make some dish, hire an expert to prep how to make it with all the best equipment and ingredients, and do a video where he makes Roger call him Uncle! That would get views! PS. I've watched your subs grow fast, keep working on a collaboration, you'll be making fried rice faster than you think! 😉👍
@@GoodForYou4504 I will, thank you!
Great work is when Chef James turns a difficult to see video like that into a funny and educative activity
😂 I'm glad to hear that I made it better
Also, ambrosia in the U.S. is a mixed fruit salad with whipped cream as dressing. It first became popular in the 50's, IIRC, and now is bought at delis almost exclusively by the elderly.
Yes I know I was talking about Greek mythology it being the food of the Gods
@@ChefJamesMakinson I know, I was just adding something different. And isn't it interesting how the food of the gods, in the U.S., is turned into something pretty disgusting?
@@dingfeldersmurfalot4560😂 you got that right!
@@stacyc5657 Heheh, seriously, I've never seen anyone under 60 order that.
Thank you Chef James! I’ve been watching your channel for several days now, finally subscribed… I enjoy you so much, your soothing voice delivering your kitchen knowledge while critiquing certain chefs is refreshing, & fun. I’ve learned so much, & I’m in my fifties, never to old to learn. You’ve inspired me to continue my love of cooking.
Bless you dear, and THANK YOU AGAIN 🙏🏼♥️
Thank you so much!! I have recipe videos as well if you need some recipes
BBC now stands for Bad British Chefs (not including Gordon Ramsay) ;P
😂 Hahaha
In my opinion, the prononciation of chef Makinson is absolutely clear, understandable and nice to listen to.
Thank you!
It's hard to do educational commentary when nothing is actually happening in the video... I don't believe someone here expected you to explain how to make ramen from scratch😅
yes it is haha
I found your channel today, this is the third one I've watched with you reviewing Uncle Roger reviewing, and I'm laughing so much! Learning too, so it's all good! Ah please keep on with these vids! I've subscribed already, such good viewing xx
Hey Rai! Thank you so much! :) have a great week!
I’m with Nigella on the radish love, and I’m borderline obsessed with her pots (Iittala Tools - I got one from the factory shop a while ago and it’s genuinely so nice) - but other than that, miss me with her version of ramen 😅
🤣
That was incredibly entertaining and funny to watch, even if not quite as educational as you usually do it. You are still great when you show your humorous side!
Glad you enjoyed it! :)
I agree with the lighting and I volunteer to help Nigela finding some other use for the room.
Not sorry children.
Yes I can eat with chopsticks but I had to learn it from a vietnamnese colleague
😂
Oh, man, nobody can play with Uncle Roger's heart like Nigella Lawson.
8:05 - I love the face you made when uncle roger presented that fact 😂
🤣
In my Japanese family as a kid, I used this chopstick with circular holders on the correct holding points on the chopsticks. So it's basically muscle memory when holding a regular chopstick. Surprisingly, I've heard from some south east asian friends from Singapore that they dont know how to use chopsticks.
really?! that's interesting!
Hahaha, I cannot use chopsticks for the life of me - what a true disgrace to the asian world.. though I never have been to Asia before (doubt that would excuse me at all, and yes, I do have Asian blood running through me).
9:58 "how easily it is for you to forget your own grammar" Lol, great demonstration.
😂
Been watching a lot of your videos lately. You seem so humble. Also you should tell us about those "pranks" you've pulled. Sounds interesting! Love your stuff. Also I never tried eating with chopsticks when I was a kid. I tried as an adult. It came very easy for me. My ex was pissed...
😉
I like your mellow smile + with uncle roger's aggressive reaction. It adds salt into injury. 😅😅😅
I enjoyed your content
😉
I really like how Uncle Rogee is there for comedic effect and James is there for the actual review. It makes it more interesting and valuable.
Thank you!
The BBC lighting of Nigella Lawson is not fit for a kitchen, but get a few candles nice mood music +🥂+❤. Perfect!!!
Thank you Chef.
😂
I admit initially I thought that someone reacting to a reaction is a dumb format, boy was I wrong. I love your vids James. You balance the comedic element of Nigel with your calmness, niceness and knowledge, and I dig it. Really like your content.
Thank you! I try to add what I can but sometimes it is not easy!
James mouthing “umami” with that quizzical look on his face and then raising his eyebrow in judgment. 😂😂😂
😂
Im pretty sure the "soy sauce" she is putting in at 10:13 is fish sauce. Only fish sauce has that small opening combined in that kind of wrapping and glass...
Its too little regardless tho..
Btw I love watching you react to uncle roger videos. You 2 fit together really well.
I didn’t even think about the rubber band thing. Thank you for the tip! I’m going to a Japanese steakhouse in October for my birthday so I’ll remember that.
Oh damn this was the meecro-wauvey lady 😂. Was cracking my daughter up the other day talking about that.
Setting a 500k sub goal at this point is kinda wild, love it.
😂
despite living in germany, my father insisted that i learn to eat with sticks. the rubberband trick is REALY good to learn it.
Much love Chef James. Cheers to all the viewers here. good community
Thank you so much!
James, Another great video and thank you for the book advice. Have a great day!
Thank you! have a great weekend!
@@ChefJamesMakinson Hope you do as well! Uncle Roger and you should come to NYC!
I use dried shiitake when I'm making the dashi from scratch, along with kombu and bonito; I don't add it into premade dashi
Chef, your facial expressions tell the whole story! Loved it
Good to hear!
2:28 good one chef😂😂
There are few things more enjoyable than watching a chef being confused at a cooking video.
😂
I got a good chuckle watching this video. Thank yiu
It came from my Dad who served in the military for 22 years before I was born so he learned how to use chopsticks while he was stained overseas and was thrilled to teach me how to use them😊 😊😊😊
When I saw that broth I thought she was cooking piss😂😂😂
😂 Haha
Chef James likes to pull pranks in the kitchen to lighten the mood? Now that's a cool as heck chef!
