  • About the Author
Neil J Moore is in his 40th year of managing pubs. He has worked in virtually every corner of the UK and has seen it all. Born in Nottinghamshire in 1965, he started helping out in pubs as a glass collector. As a lad from Worksop, the Shireoaks Mining Pit loomed large for all the local youngsters and Neil saw the licensed pub trade as the best way to avoid that black hole in the ground. His intuition was proved right with the advent of the miner’s strike, where he witnessed war in the streets, in the park, and even in his garden.
His steely determination was born in his school days. Due to multiple dyslexia and dysgraphia (not recognized in those days), he struggled at school. Added to this was a very bad stammer for which he was teased endlessly by kids and teachers alike. Because of this, he craved success and respect. He was told he would never make it….
Whitbread Manager of the Year 1996
Laurel Pub Company Customer Service Pub of the year 2004
Greene King Food Pub of The Year 2006
Northern Region Greene King Pub & Manager of the year 2010
    Chief Executive Special Award 2011
National Greene King Pub & Manager of the Year 2012
Greene King Innovation Pub of the Year 2013
    Oh…and he’s now written a fantastic book!
Neil’s story is a crazy journey that has seen him move home more times than he can remember, each time taking on a new challenge in another broken-down pub or managing the opening of a shiny new pub in the city centre. Sometimes the job was to open a whole new brand of pub or bar, most of the time the role was very exciting, but also very much blood, sweat, tears, and hard graft. He achieved what everybody told him he would never do.
Now calm, settled, reflective, and humbled, Neil considers himself an educator. His biggest passion is teaching others about hospitality and how to ensure it does not eat them alive. His role is to help young managers and team members learn quickly, grow at pace, and remain focused as others try to use them for their own aims. He teaches how to avoid the traps, not get used, and stay one step ahead of the “overly educated simpletons who are appointed as bosses.”
We can all remember at least one great night in our local pub. Neil has had a lifetime of these and The Bitterest PLC To Swallow is his brutal, blunt, emotional, honest, and hilarious story.
