Great helpful video, thank you! My only advice to travelers is to spend some time really looking at a station map before your trip and follow the signage when at Tokyo station. On the level that the JR shinkansen gates are there was a very helpful lady in a booth in the middle of the public concourse. Expect to get lost but you'll figure it out with the signs. I had no idea how to transfer from the shinkansen to the regular subways but the signs got me there. If you have any issue getting through a paid entry gate with your ticket or pass see the nearby staff right away rather than clogging the gate in a series of steps of accepting that you have an issue, they resolved my issue immediately the couple of times it happened to me.
Not complicated at all when you teach and explain about it!! Thanks again very much for this hard to get around sometimes but fun place to visit and explore!! 🤝🤝🤝

OMG. My daughter and I will be there in 2 weeks taking Narita Express to Tokyo Station to catch Shinkansen Hayabusa Train to Morioka. I just had a panic attack. Was there 7 years ago. This video reminded me of how Tokyo Station is not for the faint of heart!!!

Our first experience at Tokyo Station happened while they were still deep in their construction activities. So directional signs would often lead to dead ends, making it even harder. Since the end of the construction, it’s gotten easier. The station that always gets me in a circle is Ikekuburo. I get so twisted up there.

Thank you for this very informative video Kengo. I like trains, and we have been to Tokyo station several times (its great especially on rainy days), with a platform ticket, to take pictures of Shinkansen. Last year, we were really craving ramen and walked around for about an hour, and couldnt find a ramen restaurant. At the end, we gave up and returned to Shinjuku (where our hotel is), and had ramen there. Later on, I found out that there are many ramen restaurants in Tokyo station, just on another floor, and I felt really stupid. But well, thats okay and things like that can happen. In a video from another channel, I saw that the red brick building is a fancy hotel, the Tokyo Station Hotel. That was surprising and interesting for me. The hotel is expensive and in a way very old fashioned, so its not really my cup of tea.
Thank you for watching. Yes, JR Central's shopping streets including Tokyo character street, Ramen street and other shopping streets are in the basement on Yaesu side. Somehow there aren't many stairs going directly between 1st floor and B1 near Yaesu exit, so it's difficult to find.
Love the maps of Tokyo Station and surrounding areas! It is an overwhelming station but you can traverse quite easily if you study your route and destination before you arrive. Arigato, Kengo san!👏🏼✨💕😎🌺🍍
What a useful video this is Kengo-San! I remember feeling a little overwhelmed the first time I visited there for sure. One tip for anyone coming in to Haneda Airport and looking to exchange their JR Pass, if it is very busy at Haneda, just take the train to Tokyo Station and exchange there instead - I have always found it to be much quieter.
The signage is pretty good. I usually avoid the peak timing and go for the early trains so it is not too bad in looking for the platform. What is harder is if you stored something here at a locker and need to find the space, that can be tougher as signage is not as clear!!
I worried about getting lost in Tokyo station but a little research goes a long way. I'll be staying in Tokyo 2nd - 6th and again 12th -16th of March next year with Osaka in between so i'm doing a lot of video watching at the minute. Thank you Kengo for your videos, they are very informative. I'll be using the Yamanote line most and it doesn't look that hard to find the Tokaido Shinkansen tracks when I get off the Yamanote line train (on platform 5)? from Ueno or Kanda where i'm staying. Now watch me get lost 🤣🤣
Hope you can show us the actual google map and how to follow it from one stn to a different stn. And use the most complicated route with few transfers…thanks
Kenchan we'll be in TYO 9/19~10/3. We'll catch the tail end of sumo bouts in Ryogoku and head for Nikko for 3days from Tobu Asakusa Station. Luckily we'll skip Tokyo Station. For me its only benefit is to catch bullet train for long distance destinations like northern coast in Niigata, Toyama and extensions to Fukui/Tsuruga (which opened March 2024). We may go further north to Aizuwakamatsu from Nikko, but not sure yet. We'll appreciate any info regarding places interesting north of Nikko or Tochigi prefecture.
I've been there last March 2024, it is a confusing labyrinth for a first timer solo traveler like me, I got lost once trying to find the caracter street, some Japanese are helpful, some are just don't care including some station staff. but I made it eventually. Love Tokyo and Japan as a whole anyway, hope to come again someday.

Avoid Tokyo station if you can. Use Shinagawa station for some Shinkansen trains. Don’t know if the architect for Tokyo station had a shopping center or transport station in mind when it was designed. Instead of central passages to the train platforms, it has multiple little arteries and entrances for different train lines. It’s a travelers nightmare!
Important: In Japan, the Ground floor is called '1st floor'. This is the opposite of other countries where the floor at ground level is called the 'Ground Floor'. No wonder people get lost!
The quickest way to transfer is to take the Narita Express to Shinagawa and change there for the Keikyu main line to Haneda. There is also the direct limousine bus between the two airports but this is scheduled for nearly a two hour journey and can be a lot more in rush hour. Much safer with the train if you're in a hurry
Nowadays my wife and I avoid Tokyo Stn completely. To get to the Kansai region, we go through Ueno and Kanazawa instead, a much more pleasant route but let’s keep that a secret.

I get to avoid Tokyo Station when going from Osaka to Yamagata by flying instead. The crowd and the low ceiling makes me feel claustrophobic.
