The Victory carpenter's account is an invoice for paint pigments, not actual tins of paint! The pigments were mixed on site with a linseed oil base, and Calcium Carbonate was added to improve, enhance and extend the coverage of the paint. It could therefore have been almost any colour when applied! And although Admiralty had a standard colour scheme, it clearly was "interpreted" by Captains as a whole variety of colours based on yellow ochre and white were seen on various British warships.
I could also be that white was used as the undercoat and Ochre on top. Lincoln University has done recent research of paint samples form the ship itself, and consider the hull to be bands of graphite black alternating with a sort of Khaki colour.
I'm not saying your scheme is incorrect. I'm saying we don't know for certain. Whatever shade one uses, nobody can really say it's wrong.
Nelson is recorded as painting the masts a very pale shade of yellow, however.

Ahoy, the best kit. Historical, even much better presented. Than the very expensive wooden kits.

Alex, I had this very kit 30 years ago. I got as far as the foremast when an event happened that caused me to deposit the kit in a refuse bin. never mind that , the yellow was yellow ochre and Nelson really liked the "checkerboard effect" of the gun ports painted black along the ochre stripes. Nelson was my hero from age of about 6 years old and eventually setting foot aboard Victory was spiritual. I know you will do justice to his and this magnificent ship's memory. Thank you in advance.

This will be a masterpiece. All those parts are mindboggling. 3000 or more parts (with PE)! That's going to be one heck of a job. The instructions are intimidating alone. Really looking forward to all of the awesome videos. This really made my day, thank you Alex. Stay safe brother and have a wonderful weekend. My best to your family and friends. God bless. 👍👌🇵🇹🤝🇺🇸

You can do it Alex , I have faith you can. Try not be overwhelmed on how many steps you have before you but rejoice in the steps you have behind you. If it takes a few videos I myself can understand and be patient. You do amazing work and thank you for the interesting narrative.

I always drooled In front of the Heller catalogue on those years with the Soleil Royal. Beautiful kits but expensive and out of reach for a teenager who was still building the Matchbox simple & affordable ones. I love this model, it will be stunning once completed. Keep patient, I trust you will make a masterpiece out of it...as usual! Bonne continuation !

I live near Portsmouth where Victory is on display at the Historic Dockyard there, so I've seen her in person and been aboard her several times over the years. Your model is off to a great start and I'm sure you will do your best to make this build as faithful to the real thing as possible. Keep up the good work!

    Alex - couple of things:
    1. Don't give up. Any model kit can be challenging and sometimes you just have to step away to regroup.
    2. I have started building a couple of wooden ship kits over the last few months. I thought plastic kits could be challenging but these wooden ships are intense. In a good way.
    3. A wise man said that if you rush, then it's not a hobby. Take your time. Study the instructions. Prep as much as you can. It's not a race.
You probably know all that, but I hope you enjoy the build and have fun.

Nice start on the Victory Alex... you are a dab hand with the paint brush... I wish my hands were that steady. I think the wrong colour on the copper hull actually worked in your favour as a perfect undercoat to get a nice copper tone. Some of my biggest mistakes turn out to be new techniques LOL

Been looking forward to this first video for quite some time and it didn’t disappoint. Had to smile at the yellow ochre segment though; they’ve recently repainted Victory in Portsmouth in what they say are her Trafalgar colours and the yellow ochre is now more of a very pale salmon pink / yellow which doesn’t look like any colour used in contemporary paintings of the Royal Navy from the time. So I’m very happy to see you are sticking with the ‘traditional’ colours beloved by modellers for decades :-). On a more serious note, this is a huge undertaking in terms of time especially now you are adding all the PE in. Don’t feel you need to finish it for us, the viewers, if you ever need to park it and do something else for a few months we’ll understand.

More than 30 years ago I wanted to build the HMS Victory, it was a kit out of wood, and too much work.
So I didn’t finished yet. Then I decided to build the PAMIR from Heller, but it took a very long time to build. Many years without doing anything!
I finished it in March 2020🤔 I hope I will build the HMS Victory more fast!

Hi Alex... grest to see the first episode build. Its a beast of a kit! I'm doing this kit as well at the moment. Sorry to see the damage on some parts of the kit. You'll be OK though! I visited the real Victory recently and have loads of reference pics which I'm happy to share. Nice colours you chose. I think gold makes a good base for copper. Adds a richness. I used Tamiya panel line black as a wash over the copper and will weather further soon, but it looks good so far. Your yellow is great too. I went with tamiya flat flesh (x15 I think?) As it represents the ship as she is now, but the yellow ochre is a classic! Humbrol do a nice oak acrylic as well for the masts, but it doesn't airbrush very well. What are your thoughts on blocks and deadeyes? Are you going to stick with the kit supplied or will you replace?
And... last but not least, why you hate the seagulls? :)

I'm in the process of building this exact kit from Heller. Scale 1:100 I pasted copper on the fuselage. The colors are from Krick, original pigments. So far so good, but now comes the rigging. But the printing of the building plan is such a disaster that, I have to laboriously look for everything together. A model kit in this price range should at least have legible instructions. The yarn that came with it is a joke too.

    • @AlexModeling

@@AlexModeling Thats not what I meant . The plan is simply badly printed. The designations are too small and blurry, so that the numbering cannot be recognized. Not even with a magnifying glass. But I downloaded pictures from the internet, after which I can see the details

You can clearly see a child built it but I think they still look great.
So if a 10 year old can do this, you can easily build the Victory 😁
