I think, and this is just my opinion.. I think he was tired of being the "class clown", so he rebelled and went too far, and decided to take on the "tough guy" persona, and instead of looking "tough" he ended up looking like a "Major JERK". He just needs a few real friends, because in Hollywood i don't think it's easy to find a real friend who isn't trying to get publicity or money off of you in some way.
I'm sorry but I absolutely adore him. I don't get why some people don't like him - I think he's a great actor and fun in interviews. Since I don't know him personally I can't really say anything about his character but he's so much fun to watch^^
