    After a recent flood event my 40 gal. Whirlpool water heater pilot went out. After many attempts to relight it and failing to do so, I called my friendly plumber to help. Following my detailed description of the event and sending him photos of the condition, he preferred to replace the water heater entirely; 3 days wait and a $1400 estimate. Heck it's the weekend and my wife wants hot water so I agreed. Then I watched your video. Hey, I can do this. I could not remove the wires from the controller but the burner came out enough to clean it and wipe dry the base of the tank. While out, I placed a fan on the burner and interior of the tank over night. The next morning I reassembled it and it fired right up. I cancelled the new heater installation. The controller is coding "normal operation." Your instructions were simple and precise. Thanks....

    Great video. Thank you. I live in Bergen county NJ and had 4 feet of water when Ida hit NJ. After water was gone I was trying to restart my water heater for 3 days with no success. Ignitor was not working properly, gas was not coming either. I talked to the plumbing company. They said, that to replace my 50G heater will cost me $1800 . I watched your video, bought a new ignitor on amazon for $3.84 and fixed the heater. Thank you very much.

      Since you had 4 feet of water in your basement, your gas control ( Thermostat) would have been under water (not good). It is required by all gas Appliance manufacturers anytime a gas control gets flooded ( submerged in water) that the gas control get replaced at minimum. The concern is the pilot safety may corrode over time and not work, causing a hazardous situation and possible explosion , same thing for your gas furnace. Call your insurance company and get them replaced as soon as possible.

    Excellent video!!!
    After 3 days of no hot water after a minor basement flood, two plumber visits and waiting for the plumber to order parts ( that in retrospect would not have fixed it) I decided to give it a 5th try on my own while following your video, took out the burner, blew out both of the gas lines, reassembled and it and it lit and is working again. This saved me not only the cost of repairs that likely wouldn't have worked or he would have kept guessing on replacing parts until he replaced everything but also a hotel bill as my wife was ready to check into a hotel that evening do to work needs and thereby saving us likely another $1000. Thank you for taking time to make the video. I've Liked, subscribed and shared.

    Thank you, after several inches of water in my basement mine was out as well. I removed the front cover but had two wires i could not get to unplug. Cleaned out the inside that had standing water in it and just put a fan on it all day. Came back the next morning put it back together and she fired right up! Thanks again.

    Wonderful video. Helped me fix a 10 year old water heater. Interesting part is I had a light flood, the pilot would light and the full burner would even light for a few seconds. But then I would see moisture in the viewing window and the flame would go out. Turned out that there was some standing water at the bottom. After drying with a towel and cleaning it out, it went together and fired up and didn't go out. Thanks

    I was optimistic about this but it unfortunately did not work for me. I'm going to repeat the process 1 more time just for good measure but my optimism has pretty much gone out the window at this point. Gave a thumbs up though because very informative and I'm sure in 90% of cases it would fix the issue. I am going to try to replace the gas valve / igniter system next if I have no luck again.

    my water heaters were flooded but i let it sit for 7 days now.. I looked inside the little window and it looks all dry but the insulation around the tank is still a little damp. Would it be safe to try to light it up ? the brand is rheem and they are about 3 years old.

    • @TheModernHomestead
      @TheModernHomestead  3 роки тому

      There could be water in the gas tube that you won’t be able to see and it may not easily evaporate from. Personally, I would pull it apart and clean it out and blow the lines dry.

    Does anyone know if self cleaning gas water heaters are water proof around the pilot?

    • @adamradley4407
      @adamradley4407 3 роки тому

      No they are not. Self cleaning just means the water is designed to swirl at the bottom to prevent sediment. Most HWT will draw air for combustion around the bottom. If you actually have a standing pilot assembly there is no way the chamber can be water tight as it is not even air tight ;)

    If the water rises over the control valve………trash it ….I had three feet of water in a rental……so I use professional people for repairs …my plumber stated he could fix both boiler and water heater but would have to replace all parts…….or replace units …….labor and parts would be the same…..
    He replaced the units ….I took the control valves to see if they could be used…….took them apart and after a couple days they were full of corrosion…don’t recommend using flooded parts……avoid a disaster……
