  • Bassai Dai - Penetrate the Fortess
This kata was first performed in Japan by Master Gichin Funakoshi in 1922. It is one of the most popular kata practiced today and is one of the compulsory kata for the grading to Shodan. It is almost twice the length of the preceding kata. Here Dai means big (Sho meaning small). The movements are said to be likened to that of a battering ram being used against solid walls, hence the name. There are many different versions of Bassai Dai and it's origins are believed to be the village of Tomari in Hokkaido, Japan.
This kata performed by Naka Sensei and Teach by Ogura Sensei from Japan Karate Association

Interesting to note, in movement 19 (wrist grab after left shuto-uke) was changed from moving the front leg to moving the back leg during stance transition from back to front. This deviates from the original JKA Bassai-Dai method, and only recently implemented. SKI (Kanazawa's Shotokan) made that same change during the 80's, because Kanazawa Sensei believed the actual application would be more practical if the front leg stayed in the same place. Really cool to note.

Train JKA & trained under other styles before so I have always moved the back leg. Some instructors are still moving the front leg which confuses some people.

@@paulsmith4701 My old dojo here in NYC (formerly headed by Mori Sesnsei) still practice the old method of moving the front leg only. Yes, it could be confusing. More sensei was so much a traditionalist, even his approach to teaching sparring was 60s and 70s style JKA. He didn't care much for Shotokan as a sport, but as a traditional art and method for self-develppment
      (Dō).

when one the "stamping kick" the heal hits the ground first thus the heal is the weapon . a stomp with the toes would do not Damage to the opponent . just a thought

when doing the double hammer Hand strike one should bend the knees a little deeper as this is a strike to the KIDNEY and one must go UNDER opponents hands to have a clear and undetected shot . Try it out with a partner .

You did not recorded couple of fundamental techniques parts:
1-in movement 9; seiryu instead of tateshuto
2- with yama zuki; fudo dachi instead of zenkutsu?
3-in first KIAI; kekomi instead of fumikomi?

@@brucelevine6517 Yes; no Kata with yoko kekomi but should be showed like the other fumi komi (after the manji uke) Really looks like a gedan yoko geri kekomi
The long zenkutsu dachi with the yama zuki really look like fudo dachi too
