This is just too awesome. Though I know the technical aspects of Assetto Corsa and understood logically that it is a great sim, I wasn't falling in love with it. For some reason I couldn't follow my mental lines... I thought "well, I kinda know how to guess a good theoretical line, but maybe I'm just too much of a noob to translate that to the game". Also, drifting was impossible, too much oversteering. But the most important, I wasn't feeling how fast I was going, making the game boring and screwing with my spatial awareness, and I was always braking too early or too late. Then I stumbled with some FOV tutorials, calculated my ideal FOV, made a little compromise and adjusted with how I perceive cars in real life and... eureka! Yes, use about 65 to 90 degrees. All these videos about "correct" FOV are wrong. The smaller you make your FOV, the more you eliminate information used by your brain in perceiving what speed you are going. Because your monitor is a smaller window on reality than your eyes, which are around 160 degrees FOV, you need to make a compromise otherwise things may become too small to make out clearly.
@@jasonking1284 it depends very much on how your brain works, these FOV tutorials are NOT WRONG and they work for most people especially if you drive a car in the real world. @@ZoltanF1LH Nope. Accepting these ridiculous FOV theories just means you are gullible. You believe anything as long as it comes from an official looking source. Common sense will tell you that if you want to visually perceive what a person was experiencing whilst driving in reality on a monitor then the ENTIRETY of that vision must be brought to a monitor. If its a giant 80inch monitor, everything can be actual size as in real life, but if you make the monitor smaller, you need to SCALE everything down to fit into the monitor's screen size NOT cut things out of the screen edges. Imagine trying to play on a mobile phone screen size. According to these FOV calculations, you would continually be looking at a patch on the car windscreen. So all you would see on your mobile screen would be a blue screen for a sunny day and a grey screen for an overcast day. I just set my FOV as your table suggested. I have 25 inch 21:9 screen and closest I can sit is 27 inches. I tried out Spa with Ferrari 2004 and improved my best by 1 second, now it's 1:52.something. But there is one problem with this approach with single monitor - I can't see corners. Like first right hairpin in Spa - when I start turning I barely see the edge of the apex. So FOV needs to be a bit wider, at least 1 degree, and seat position needs to be moved back to even see front of the wheels. I think some people would get motion sickness in Monaco, didn't try it out yet.
I'm late to the party but I've had this at the back of my mind for a long time and never took the time to do it. I'll give it a try tomorrow and see if I fail spectacularly.
Damn, I shaved 2,5 seconds off of my silverstone international lap, this is suprising! Thanks for the info! I made more of a progression than in 1-2 hours of repeated laps!
then you must move the monitor closer to your eyes. Its all about your eye distance from the monitor to choose the correct fov. Most people run with monitors being even up to 2 meters away from their faces, kinda like how we would play consoles on the couch... and thats completely wrong. The key is to bring the monitor as close as you can without it disrupting your view of the steering wheel. So probably just behind it. And then set the fov correctly. It should be around 45 degrees since i have 27" aswell so you can get away with 50 or even up to 55 degrees.
This is absolutely correct, however, if you are using say a 22inch monitor (I still do) and sitting 27 inches away, you need a field of view in Assetto Corsa of around 20. This is technically right but the experience in terms of a feeling of speed and and immersion is none existent, yes you might be faster after time but that's simply practice and placebo effect. I have tried it, I spent 50 laps at Imola with a 20 field of view in cockpit camera and yes I got faster, but that was due to learning the track and car limits over time. You can do that in any view, it's just different. I proved after another 50 laps around Imola with a 45 field of view that I could beat my times set in the 'techinally correct' field of view. It's just a case of learning a different view and staying with it. Same as buying a new car, everything is different, obviously the bigger the screen the better for immersion. I would suggest a view in Assetto Corsa of around 45 is about right regardless of screen size. If at that field of view, you feel it is too small then increase your monitor / TV size keeping the view at 45 until you are happy with the balance between visibility and emersion. The way I came to this view as being correct in 2 dimensions is by looking at what you can see in VR and trying to match it in 2D, then increase monitor / TV to suite your seating position, in reality (a technically correct perspective), you would need a 52 - 55 inch screen sitting 27 inches away, you would need at least 4K for that and a the top graphics card available today. So whilst I agree that your theory is technically correct, it is not doing the sim justice sitting with your nose on the windscreen with barely any field of view (perspective wise). The placebo effect is very strong, if you buy a new wheel or pedals, you will most likely go faster because your brain is telling you that you are better now because you have better stuff so you must go faster and you most likely will. The best solution i can recommend both cost and practical wise would be a 1080P projector at 70 inches sitting around 40 inches away. :-)
Thank you for this! After figuring out how to get Assetto to work on dual monitors (too poor for a 3rd atm or VR) this helped a ton I feel. I had mine on just over 60 since I was just on a single monitor but within one session I had my time down very quickly. Although I just got the game and aren't used to using the wheel too much nor the game I think it really does make the speed feel more accurate.
Just did some trig. FOV=2 times the inverse tan of (half monitor width divided by distance to eyes). So if you have 16:9 32" monitor that's 27.5" wide at 48 inches away it would be 27.5/2 then divided by 48 then you hit aTan on calculator then multiply by 2 and you get 31.96 degrees.
Actually the FOV used is the vertical one, so you should do your calculation with the height of the monitor. That way the numbers match with the video's.
Hey Bud! just wanted to thank you for the awesome vid! it made a huge difference, absolutely love the FOV now. Might sound weird but i feel connected with the car now haha
Mike, regarding FOV. Have you considered "Track IR 5" which you can dial into being able to finely turn to see your mirrors. Boy, I need you to take a vacation to visit and be my tutor. Cheers, Vernon
Hey Vernon! Haha, I’d make a terrible tutor But yeah, I’ve used a TrackIR equivalent before. It’s pretty cool. I find though that the slight lag I see when using TrackIR throws me off.
Specific/odd question: I race on my 65" home theater TV, with my cockpit sitting as close as possible to the screen (pedal board is up against the entertainment setup). When I calculate the 'real' FOV, it's insanely distorted and loses all depth perception. I think I calculate ~37 degrees FOV. Is this because I'm sitting so far away from the screen? Is a home theater just not optimal for racing?
hello 604 thank you for the vid on fov I am amazed the difference in driving now that I have set correct fov and yes I am 2.5 to 3 seconds faster both in hot laping and even in online racing now so once again thank you
great tutorial about FOV ... Thank you very much !!! About a too small Monitor or TV and accurate FOV. In my case it was helpful to activate the Neck FX in ContentManager. Now i have a better overview in corners, more safe driving, more speed and i also have a nearly accurate FOV.
Good video. Wanted to sound out on triple monitor setup. It has a LOT of possibilities depending on how you setup the arch around you. You can easily have a hFoV well over 100 with 3 screens if the game lets you define the monitor angles like iRacing. Also curved monitors can add FoV. But in a slight amount. I have a 49" 32:9 monitor and if I compare it to a flat equivalent I get 3 degrees more FoV on the curved monitor.
Great tutorial Mike. And if you can tolerate the heavy editing, it's great alternating between race video's & (hopefully) helpful tutorials like this one. But funnily for me, it's useless on two counts. The first is that I race in bonnet view (sorry, hood view for the US), so no help there. I then changed it to 30 odd for F1/GP cars, only to find that it spoilt replays for racing channel creators, as most viewers? like to see the whole wheel anyway, to know what your doing in the car. I guess it's great that you can simply alternate between the two FOV Settings..................
Hi Michael, thanks for checking out my video. I've really enjoyed your last few videos; you're the king of classic car racing in my books! Have you tried running in cockpit view with good FOV settings for 10 or more laps? I think you might find some benefits.
Ouch, my only good PC is a laptop with a 15.6 inch monitor. I'm starting to have doubts if I should get more invested in this (getting a wheel and more sims) I've been playing lots (well more than my other games) of AC recently too :(
It's all about what you can afford. If the monitor is your biggest want, try looking for a used monitor; you can probably find a 24" monitor that can connect to your laptop for around $30
With all do respect, as a amateur real life racer as well, fov is fine, but without seeing the apex it is useless. So get the mod that automatically turns your view through the corner or make it enough to see the apex!
Great video , I was looking for these calculations but i am to thick to work it out for my self. Once again Thanks. Unfortunately I think that the only way forward now is a VR headset , Monitors assume that you do not have any neck muscles, so it can be restrictive. Is there a cheaper alternative to VR? can you do a video on any possible options ? regards
so, according to the FOV data you give here for a 52" TV screen, the viewing distance should be 48" away from the screen for the driver's eyes and the virtual FOV which i guess refers to the in game settings should be set to 30 degrees, is that right?
For those on triple monitors you'll find that the FOV setting is greyed out and the driver view app will not work. You will need to use Assetto corsa's Triple Monitor app in your sidebar instead.
On my PS4 I can't go wider than 50degrees in my video settings. I can only vary between 50 and 60 degrees in my settings. I guess this is a difference between PS4 and PC? Thankyou. (Connected to 16:9 tv).
What's the difference between the ingame FOV slider and in the settings on PS4? In game i can setup the slider between 29 and 90 and in the settings 50 -60. Which one is vFOV? Which one do I have to use if I have calculated the vFOV?
Aerospace TUdelft hm, interesting question. I don't have much experience with the PS4 version. I'd say apply your calculated FOV to the in game slider, that sounds like a realistic range for vFOV
I'm new to Racing Sims. I'm playing on a 42''..can I render it in a short aspect ratio so I can "simulate" triple screen or ultra wide monitors? I put the game in windowed mode and made the window shorter, but I'm afraid on how it will impact distance measurement.
Hey, maybe too late, but here my response: I think the only thing you have to be careful of are the different ways of measurement of FOVs (i.e. vFOV, hFOV etc., many different ways for different games; AC uses vFOV as mentioned) and the units (cm or inch). Sometimes the calculators round a little bit up or down, so there are different results. But they are like only 1 degree or something so you really shouldn't care that much. Actually, you can calculate the FOV yourself with the following formula: FOV = 2 * ARCTAN (0.5 * H / D) (took it from Hollow's excellent guide on FOV in the AC hub on Steam, I think he got some mathematical things wrong but it could be just me. With the trigonometrical functions you can really easily proof it yourself, Hollow also does a great job of explaining the proof in the guide) H: height of monitor D: distance to screen
Thanks for the vid Mike, at the moment I'm playing AC on an xBox and a 60" TV. Excuse my ignorance but how do I calculate my proper FOV for a 60" screen?
SimRacing604 Yeah I worked out that it would be 23 degrees, but when I tried it I really didn’t like it. It actually seemed wrong to me. Very very wrong. But I think you said that it would feel wrong at first, but to stick with it. But I don’t know if I can.
Mythbuster3808 I didn't think you could adjust FOV on the rift. I thought that once you're Game recognized the VR device it sets you FOV to reality. If you do need to adjust it, I believe the rift and the vive have an FOV of 120degrees.
Hi: I cannot change my seat position somehow. It just wouldn't work as I click the arrows. Any idea? I am using single monitor/TV. Also, is the Onboard Setting (change seat position) supposed to work on "noise/hood camera view" too (not just cockpit camera view)? thanks
Wierd the numbers you give at the end of the video don't match mine I have 55 inch TV 16.9 and 32 inches from the TV and the result gave me 74 for fov in assetto Corsa but yours for 30 inches away says to set it at 46° I'm confused who's right your video or the website?
Why would you decide not to show and compare with actual images of FOV examples? Some of use just want to see quickly rather than listen to 15+ minutes of monologue.
Took my Measuring tape today just to make sure that mine is 100% spot on and yup its set correctly but.... simply unplayable. Way to fucking slow mo!! It's so bad.
Totally not working for me. This might do for single seaters but in the Abarth 500 racecar you won't be able to see anything of the right side of the windscreen, as it even won't cover the mirror that sits in the middle, you are not even seeing all of the left side. For hitting left curbs it's cool...other not so much. So after fiddling with the settings I basically landed where I was before.
Using a single monitor, not seeing the mirrors sounds to be correct if you use a realistic FOV. Just sit in a car and compare your irl FOV to the size of your monitor, and you should notice how small computer screens are. I concur that sometimes the calculated FOV just doesn't feels right, and that's when hands-on tuning works best. My case: - Default FOV: 45º - Calculated FOV: 19º - After manual tuning: 25º I have to use helicorsa and the virtual mirror, because mirrors just don't fit with a single monitor.
samurai1993 I totally understand the reasoning behind. Thing is in a car, as well as VR or tripple screens, you have peripheral view and you can move your head. With a single monitor that has a fixed view I really need to see the whole "car" otherwise I'd crash into everyone who is on the right side as I can't see them. Helicorsa helps a lot, but still. In a single seater it works great, but not in GT cars, where you are not sitting in the middle.
at least i`m not the only one. FOV that worked for me was 54, so i can see mirrors. otherwise i was crashing other cars. and even couldn`t see right corner of car. I believe these settings work only using 3 monitors.
Only helpful for people with really large screens and minimal viewing distance. I have a 65‘‘ TV and a distance of about 30 inches and I still have a very limited view if I set the FOV accordingly. So I rather set it a bit higher in order to have a better speed sensation and more visible area when cornering. Imagine you would drive your real car and there is just a small rectangle carved out in front of you where you acutally can see on the street -> that is the situation most of you have with smaller monitors and larger viewing distance. Btw: I do online racing regularly, have quite a few top times and guess what -> it does not slow you down.Reality is you have to set a compromise: not too far from reality, still giving you plenty of view angle and still having some sensation of speed.
For me, an FOV that is a bit too large does slow me down. Maybe not in a short race (under 30 minutes), but in a properly medium/long-duration race, it adds up.
Marcel B. 30 inches away from a 65 inch screen? You know the viewing distance for that size is like 9 feet minimum. You would be better moving farther back. My 55 inch is at 6 feet still feels too close.
I have a 64" screen and sit about 7.5ft from it. On PCARS I have the fov around 42-43 which feels about right to me, everything looks and feels the right scale (in the cockpit or drivers helmet view I play) and is very immersive for me.
FOV is flawed as long as it affects the focal length as well as the "window size" itself : your eyes do not have such adjustable setting! FOV should crop the image depnding on the screen size while maintaining a human vision focal length, not by crushing the perspective in front og you and making everything look near ...
nope the personal opinion and explanation was very important for viewers understanding cuz having a 17 deg fov isnt a thing a person would love to set normally.
You could use something like this - I got my monitor nicely closer: www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0765Y4CT5/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Having the right FOV will help with immersion and will help you judge distances more naturally from the very beginning but if your already used to your FOV and can judge distances fine then there are no advantages. In shooter games to gain an edge you would want to increase your FOV to its max. It might not be as immersive but it will give you better situational awareness. To help with this drawback he suggests the app that allows you to see other cars around from a top down perspective which would help with situational awareness in traffic when it's most important. Odds are a corner won't sneak up on you so having a low FOV won't be to much of a hindrance in a racing sim.
I don't understand how this is suppose to make me faster, when I can't see the corners. Use whatever FOV you are comfortable with. It's a damn video game for God's sake.
All this could be in a paper document that would take 2 minutes to skim through, read and absorb instead of 17 minutes of ummming and aahing. Such a waste of time!
@@SimRacing604 Others have commented on your waffle as well. And even you have apologised - "I'm sorry in advance that you need to endure a slideshow." Trouble with UTube is wasting hours when an A4 piece of paper would be so much quicker!!

But yeah, I’ve used a TrackIR equivalent before.
Is a home theater just not optimal for racing?
hello 604 thank you for the vid on fov I am amazed the difference in driving now that I have set correct fov and yes I am 2.5 to 3 seconds faster both in hot laping and even in online racing now so once again thank you
brian bullock you’re welcome! I’m glad it helped
great tutorial about FOV ... Thank you very much !!! About a too small Monitor or TV and accurate FOV. In my case it was helpful to activate the Neck FX in ContentManager. Now i have a better overview in corners, more safe driving, more speed and i also have a nearly accurate FOV.
Thanks for you vídeo.
I have a 55" tv so I set a very low FOV, 30... the speed perception decreased a lot. Is that correct?
Fabio Duarte That's right I'm 102 cm away from my 65" 4K screen which makes my FOV 44.
AC could do a general FOV based of monitor size so you pick say 27"x16:9 for example..instead it slaps some crazy 54° fov in there for yea
it does it i guess for newbies so that they wouldnt burst out saying "wtf is this view!!?"...but yeah an option would have been nice.
I'm starting to have doubts if I should get more invested in this (getting a wheel and more sims)
I've been playing lots (well more than my other games) of AC recently too :(
It's all about what you can afford.
Is there a cheaper alternative to VR? can you do a video on any possible options ? regards
Hey. Thanks for the anwesome videos you make. I was wondering: do curved displays change anything to your FOV setting?
Great video.Thank you.i have a 16:10 monitor 24.1inch 1920x1200 im about 80cm from monitor.Witch is the correct fov?sorry for my english
tzoom12 hi there, thank you for watching. About 22 degrees should be right for you
I got 17 degrees which literally zooms into my right pop up headlights, so yeah I'm just gonna dial that back a bit so I can at least see my dashboard
then the monitor must be way too far from your eyes. get it as close as possible.
This probably explains why I can't get on with the FOV including hands and steering wheel! I prefer the one that is closer.
can we apply these values of FOV for dashcam as well?
What about 29 inch ultrawide monitors?.
I've included 21:9 ratios in my tables for 27" and 32". You can choose a value in between those numbers.
so, according to the FOV data you give here for a 52" TV screen, the viewing distance should be 48" away from the screen for the driver's eyes and the virtual FOV which i guess refers to the in game settings should be set to 30 degrees, is that right?
For those on triple monitors you'll find that the FOV setting is greyed out and the driver view app will not work. You will need to use Assetto corsa's Triple Monitor app in your sidebar instead.
cant see corners as i turn into them
On my PS4 I can't go wider than 50degrees in my video settings. I can only vary between 50 and 60 degrees in my settings.
I guess this is a difference between PS4 and PC? Thankyou. (Connected to 16:9 tv).
PS4 I can set 90°
Question, if my TV is 65" 16:9 and I sit 74" away from it how do I calculate FOV?
Linkstraeger Jesus that was 2years ago, lifetime in IT world, now on triples
What's the difference between the ingame FOV slider and in the settings on PS4? In game i can setup the slider between 29 and 90 and in the settings 50 -60. Which one is vFOV? Which one do I have to use if I have calculated the vFOV?
Aerospace TUdelft hm, interesting question. I don't have much experience with the PS4 version. I'd say apply your calculated FOV to the in game slider, that sounds like a realistic range for vFOV
Assuming that your monitor is in a landscape position, I would guess the 50 is the VFOV.
I'm new to Racing Sims. I'm playing on a 42''..can I render it in a short aspect ratio so I can "simulate" triple screen or ultra wide monitors? I put the game in windowed mode and made the window shorter, but I'm afraid on how it will impact distance measurement.
Wow, thanks. I was way off and this really helped
I felt like I was in high school speech class, good info tho 😂
So what fov calculator is the best or the right one to use/more accurate ?
With the trigonometrical functions you can really easily proof it yourself, Hollow also does a great job of explaining the proof in the guide)
H: height of monitor
D: distance to screen
Thanks for the vid Mike, at the moment I'm playing AC on an xBox and a 60" TV. Excuse my ignorance but how do I calculate my proper FOV for a 60" screen?
Thank you Bobby.
my camara is just stuck on the outside, how do i change it to inside?
F1 changes views in the Assetto Corsa games
I’m so confused. I have a 60 inch tv which I sit 75 inches away from. What should my FOV be?
Eric Winkler it would be tiny. Probably about 22. It’s off my charts though
SimRacing604 Yeah I worked out that it would be 23 degrees, but when I tried it I really didn’t like it. It actually seemed wrong to me. Very very wrong. But I think you said that it would feel wrong at first, but to stick with it. But I don’t know if I can.
What if I have TrackIR? does it affect this logic somehow?
my screen is alot smaller its 15.6 inch screen i cant find any calculator that supports this size screen
I have a 21 inch monitor and I have the fov at 95 is it ok?
So how would I set up fov for the oculus rift. Should I just max it?
Mythbuster3808 I didn't think you could adjust FOV on the rift. I thought that once you're Game recognized the VR device it sets you FOV to reality.
If you do need to adjust it, I believe the rift and the vive have an FOV of 120degrees.
Rift is already set at 1:1
Hi: I cannot change my seat position somehow. It just wouldn't work as I click the arrows. Any idea? I am using single monitor/TV.
Also, is the Onboard Setting (change seat position) supposed to work on "noise/hood camera view" too (not just cockpit camera view)? thanks
Thanks a lot, finally a FOV guide for the casual (ahem, poor... :_ ) Sim racer...!
Wierd the numbers you give at the end of the video don't match mine I have 55 inch TV 16.9 and 32 inches from the TV and the result gave me 74 for fov in assetto Corsa but yours for 30 inches away says to set it at 46° I'm confused who's right your video or the website?
Thanks Mike... will give this a try.
how about a 13 inch 16:9
Im a meter away from my tv and generally have half the wheel showing am i going wrong?? 👍 👍
Richard jumpuprich how big is your tv?
SimRacing604. It's 50 inches mate thanks
You should be using a value somewhere around 34 degrees, so about half the wheel showing (depending on the car) sounds right
SimRacing604 was a good gess by me then lol, thanks mate👍👍👍👍👍
I actually got my specs wrong, my tv is 46 inch, and i sit 90cm away from the screen, i think it's 42 but I'm not sure 👍
my 27 inch screen is like a foot away from my face lol
I have never heard of a game using the vertical measurement for FOV.
17" CRT monitor, and I sit 1 yard away.
Well I'm fucked.
Can you do this on xboxone too?
Thanks mate, great vid.
17:38
aye
I'm like hey wassup hello
Why would you decide not to show and compare with actual images of FOV examples? Some of use just want to see quickly rather than listen to 15+ minutes of monologue.
Armin K because I’m not as smart as you
Nirvana intro xd,love it
Does this apply just as well to console/TV's
The "optimal" fov makes the game virtually unplayable instead of improving your laptimes, unless you have a very large screen.
Thanks to this advice I now have a face full of dashboard and 10 second slower lap times on a 40 inch screen. 10/10
what about if I am 62 inches away @ 55 inch monitor
You're too far away for me to calculate, but it'll be about 25 degrees.
When I set mine correctly, it felt like i was driving at 60km/h mean while Im doing 260......
My case:
- Default FOV: 45º
- Calculated FOV: 19º
- After manual tuning: 25º
I have to use helicorsa and the virtual mirror, because mirrors just don't fit with a single monitor.
samurai1993 I totally understand the reasoning behind.
Bro great video but i cant even see the turn what should i do 😂
Only helpful for people with really large screens and minimal viewing distance.
This is so awsome shaved one second of in 10 minutes.
damnn it realy worked got in the same car Ferrari f2004 at spa and ran a 1:49.8 thats 5 sec faster than i have ever run (sorry for bad english)
FOV is flawed as long as it affects the focal length as well as the "window size" itself : your eyes do not have such adjustable setting!
FOV should crop the image depnding on the screen size while maintaining a human vision focal length, not by crushing the perspective in front og you and making everything look near ...
This could be 3min.
nope the personal opinion and explanation was very important for viewers understanding cuz having a 17 deg fov isnt a thing a person would love to set normally.
ty
Or get a vr setup.
Thanks for this!!
Allan Bell my pleasure. Thank you for watching.
One word: VR! :D
i cringe when i see the wrong FOV. hope more people see this. sims are honestly unplayable with the wrong FOV.
Unplayable???? Are you joking?
My 27" monitor is 60 inches away, I may need to somehow move it closer lmao
You could use something like this - I got my monitor nicely closer: www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0765Y4CT5/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Awesome. Thanks
Please get to the point!!!!!!
You in a hurry?
The guys got a point. It’s great what we’re being told but the video could easily be half the time it is!
You took way too long for such a short actual explanation
ir wasnt nice to watch this VIDEO! Dont stick the Mic in your Mouth, thats way too Loud! :D
All this could be in a paper document that would take 2 minutes to skim through, read and absorb instead of 17 minutes of ummming and aahing. Such a waste of time!
Colin Stone feel free to piss right off then and waste your time somewhere else!
@@SimRacing604 Others have commented on your waffle as well. And even you have apologised - "I'm sorry in advance that you need to endure a slideshow." Trouble with UTube is wasting hours when an A4 piece of paper would be so much quicker!!
Colin Stone again, piss off if you don’t like it. Why waste your time on me?
these fov's are horrible, 24 inch monitor from around 24 inches away and 57 fov is about the best you should get.
