They called Frankenstein exactly because it was a smash of different jams, Edgar just kept on adding parts till we have this unforgettable monster of a song, It's 50 years later and it still brings it.

Agreed 100%! Also, the only other albino vocalist/artist I know of is the awesome lead vocalist for Storyville: Malford Milligan. They were a group out of Louisiana that also featured SRV's Double Trouble after his untimely passing, RIP. Here's a link to their great Austin City Limits live performance: ua-cam.com/video/Wu3vkHwxEaE/v-deo.html (if the link is blocked it's easy to find in a search) Cheers!

Part of the wonder of the song was how pieced together it was, a real "monster" to get it together in the studio. Edgar's look is actually real; he (and his equally musical brother, Johnny) were both born with Albinism.

I saw that on BBC 2, maybe when it was first broadcast, or soon after. My big brother's TV-control-concession (from our parents) was watching 'Old Grey Whistle Test', and I stayed up with him watching it. My bro' had a serious HiFi habit. To fund his habit he'd run disco's using his HiFi, and two record decks. He played a studio version of Frankenstein (sub 5 min) to end every disco. Happy Days. 🤔😂
Edgar and his brother Johnny were ridiculously talented musicians. Edgar did quite a lot of session work, with eg. Meat Loaf, Tina Turner, David Lee Roth, and others..
Thanks for bringing back the happy memories.

@@BritPopsReact "The Old Grey Whistle Test" was the only TV show featuring artists outside mainstream 'Pop' in the 1970s. The only other none-Pop music source I heard was John Peel on the radio,

It was even more insane using his HiFi that it sounds.
      His stereo speakers were 42" x 17 1/2" x 19 3/4" wide, and weighed 140lbs *(10 stone) each*
His power amp was Bose 650Watts per channel stereo, and weighed 80lbs (~6 stone)
Plus pre-amp, two Technic record decks, Revox stereo tape recorder (10inch reel to reel) so he could have a rest and a drink, and boxes of records.
He and his pals would haul that lot out of his (very cramped) bedroom, downstairs and into a van for every disco. Then bring it all back when they'd finished. My brother didn't drive, so by then he'd be slightly (or even very) drunk, .
My Mum watched them like a hawk looking for any sign of damage. Often in her dressing gown, with curlers and a hair net. With a rolling pin, she'd have morphed into a cartoon character. She was 5 foot tall.

I had the great pleasure of seeing both Johnny and Edgar Winter multiple times, including with each other. I saw Edgar during this period with this band when they debuted this here in NYC. Great times man. By the way, when groups "jam" there is generally no beginning, middle or end, nor are there distinct melodies each member abides by. This is a well crafted song with certain areas and amounts of improvisation.

The Winter brothers , Johnny and Edgar, grew up in Texas, not an optimal environment for albinos. So they spent a lot of time indoors and learned to master many instruments. So the story goes. Deep South albinos, so white they were black with soulful talent to match. Johnny was in a class by himself, gruff, tough, unique, super flash guitar, but precise and somehow tasteful. Edgar played on his first albums then went off on his own with White Trash. Timeless soulful R&B, never to be duplicated. Those days are gone, "music" now is all digital formulaic drool. Both brothers growled their vocals although Edgar had considerable range. The only UK equivalent that I can think of was Ray Davies, a gent in person but onstage a wildman who growled like a Grizzly Bear

This live version of this song is a total experience. It blew me away the first time I saw it. Edgar Winter is very talented & plays many instruments including keyboards, saxophone & timbales. The title "Frankenstein" refers he fact that the original recording of the song was much longer than the final version & it required numerous edits to shorten it. So they spliced together many different parts.

This was originally a 25 to 30 minute song called "Double Drum Solo" and played regularly in his sets on stage. When they were recording their first album, they had about 4 minutes of recording space available for the record. So, they recorded the entire song. It was way too long, so Edgar (Arp2600 keyboard, sax, timballe, Arp2600 computer, concessions, and ticket sales, and Rick (producer and lead guitar on this version) took the magnetic tape (which was, of course, black) and started cutting it by hand and splicing it back together. The splicing tape is usually either white or yellow, so the next morning they finally had it shortened enough after 3 or 4 attempts. When Chuck (drummer) came in and saw the carnage, he said, "You really Frankensteined it." And the name stuck.
In my opinion, the absolute worst thing is that it was the Master that they chopped up, so we don't have the original version anywhere.
Imagine hearing the whole half hour of this song live on stage in 1971. The original guitarist was Ronnie Montrose.

Quite a few jazz influences actually. The album track is very different, restrained really, and the length is short for the seventies. There were tracks that took up a whole side of a 33 LP, 20 minutes and more. Another one that as soon as I saw what you were listening to I had the song pop into my head, and it was, of course, different. Bottom line, Edgar Winter is "Dog Approved "
