@@w1975b Is Rose Madder related to the other two? I didn’t remember that. Gerald’s Game is such a good book. King is one of the few male writers I’ve encountered who truly seems to grasp female characters and the separate, secret worlds they so often have to survive in. I was so impressed with the main character in Gerald’s Game and I listened to the audiobook until I had it memorized back in the day.

They couldn’t keep their own money and had to give it to their husbands, they’d hide what they could in the kitchen, where the men of the 40’s and 50’s never looked.

@@sue3317 my parents were unusual for their time because my dad wanted my mom to be in control of their accounts, because she was better at it as she had worked in corporate America, while my dad had spent 25 years in the army, and had zero banking skills. They had joint accounts, but on the rare occasion that the bank would call, they'd ask for my dad, so he'd tell them to speak with his secretary, which was really my mom. They wouldn't talk to my mom, but they'd speak to my dad's "secretary," which was really my mom. So stupid!

The Christopher Plummer character was actually invented for the movie, since the book is one of those that's basically unfilmable as it is. It's really quite a remarkable writing feat how they were able to completely refocus the story onto Dolores' relationship with her daughter in the present and make a story that's just as good and satisfying.

I agree about Stephen King being an even better drama writer than he is a horror writer. Obviously his horror work is totally genre-defining, but it feels like it' harder to create really compelling dramas than it is to write scary horror, and the fact that he can write a story that's told in 2 hours where you get really invested in the characters and story and every character is dimensional and layered is incredibly impressive.

I love both the movie and the book. The whole daughter/detective thing was created for the film. But it was a brilliant and necessary invention; since the book is a first person confession. It's also connected directly to Gerald's Game and indirectly to the Dark Tower. The book gives Delores' theory as to why/how her husband started messin' with Selena. He might have always gone that route. Most likely would have. But it started the night of the stove log... They also had two sons in the book. Vera had two kids and THAT makes the book 10x crazier. You should read it, and talk about it on the channel.

  • @RebeccaODonnell-1941

It’s common for kids who are being sexually abused to try and be as unattractive as possible. Thirteen is also a common age for it to start. I followed the red flag handbook myself; terrible UTI’s, GI tract problems, didn’t bathe, smelled bad, greasy hair, bad grades, sneaking out of the house at night to avoid the rape, becoming a scary persona at school so other kids stayed away. I also got fat because my abuser found fat women repulsive. The shame and self hatred is unreal. I love Dolores so much because she defended her daughter. Too many moms and others blame the kid. Nowadays I try to help as many brothers and sisters of circumstance as I can. The girl who played the teenage Selina visited an abused children’s home. One girl told her when her father started in on her, she’d go out of her body like a bird in flight. That’s what Selena was doing in the terrible boat scene. Really important film.

Another major impact of abuse is disassociation, believe me, I know. You doubt your past memories, or you block them out altogether. You know you're not normal; you're prone to rages, youre apathetic or indifferent to life in general yet you feel great empathy to the suffering of children or animals; basically innocent, defenseless beings. You are self destructive, you have self identity issues, you know SOMETHING happened you, but you cant articulate it, and even worse, you either genuinely cant implicate someone because you cant remember whose responsible, or you know exactly who the perpetrator is but you cant bring yourself to tell anyone because it will blow everyone's lives apart

Amazing film very classic Dolores Claiborne produced and directed by Taylor Hackford screenplay by Tony Gilroy based on Dolores Claiborne by Stephen King starring Kathy Bates, Jennifer Jason Leigh, David Strathairn, John C. Reilly, Christopher Plummer and music score by Danny Elfman. In 2013, Time named the film among the top 10 greatest Stephen King film adaptations. Thank you OctoKrool great reaction excellent👍👍👍👍👍

It's so weird. Whenever I watch movies like this, women always seem to pick up the subtext of violent/sa way sooner than men do. I figured it out the first scene with the dad and the daughter.

Me too but like Chris said I thought maybe I'm over thinking it because the dynamic is different in different families but it turned out we were right and that's what's sad about it that it makes you doubt your judgement

I am so excited for this! I've seen people react to Misery on YT, but I haven't seen anyone react to this movie, which I think is even better. Gerald's Game is related, but I think the movie is skippable. Lovely reactions to a gripping film, Boys! Keep it up!

Joe is fucking awful in this movie and he got what he had coming. The book is good. Kathy Bates is Amazing. the guy who played joe is a good actor too but I hate joe. He was good in The Expanse tho.
38:22 I love watching you guys make the connection. This movie is really underrated. And Kathy does such a great job with this character. It's almost like it was made for her.
Oh you guys skipped over the scene where Selena remembers. Which is understandable it's pretty upsetting. In the book though Delores picks up a rock and smashes her husband's head while he's holding on to the ledge pulling himself up. She does kill him. But like I said he had it coming.
46:42 Curtis is right. Selena started to degrade because of what her father was doing to her, her grades started to slip, her hygiene fell off. He hurt his daughter. And Dolores tried to get away from him by closing her bank account and leaving with her daughter but he took that option away and sealed his fate.
There was horror in this movie, it just wasn't supernatural. A father going after his child, horrific.
    Thank you, Kenneth!

Yeah I kinda feel for the actor having to play a despicable role like that. I've seen him in other stuff and he's good but unfortunately for me he'll always be "that guy".

You didn't show the reveal scene when selena remembers on the boat a moment about her & her father. Thanks, because that was a f'd up scene. This movie came out when I was a teenager and I had no interest in seeing it. I had watched this a couple of years ago and I can appreciate this film now. Great reaction btw.

The filters used in this movie always fascinated me. The bright vibrant yellows of the past and the bitter cold blues of the present. Certainly sets the tones for what happened between both times. Kathy Bates did an amazing job as usual with Dolores, but Jennifer Jason Leigh and Judy Parfitt as Selena and Vera were phenomenal and totally underrated.

You don't need to justify Dolores's actions with ""self-defense". If we lived in a "civilized" society things like what happened to Selena wouldn't happen. If a man can abandon civilization like that, then a woman can to and murder itself is justifiable. Glad you guys watched this film. It's heavy but worth it. Kathy Bates should've gotten another Academy Award for this role!

Just finished reading the book and seriously just watched the movie. (already having done with Misery awhile back) The book wasn't at all what I expected and absolutely jarring in parts as was the film. Very different but still close enough to the source material... which was literally all written by a stenographer who is putting her words onto paper.
ETA: In the book she donated the $$ Vera had given her. Need to reread some parts, but I THINK it was to the charity that Vera had given a smidge of $$ to. Definitely give the book a go. In the final pages were the were newspaper clippings after Dolores had told her tale.

You guys discussing whether it was murder or self defense... it just highlights why she was the ONE case that detective could not win. She set the trap for Joe to die, but technically she didn't kill him. So how do you prove in a court of law, that she did? You can't... so she got away with it, even though they both knew she did it. That's why the detective was so hell bent on nailing her for Vera's death. She got away once, he was not going to let her get away again. This movie was such a good movie and so well done. The performances were great too.
