Everyone trashes the Raider Waite deck because of its coloring and thick lines, but I actually LOVE the look of it. The light colors and soft lines on other decks distract me, I think I connect with the art style in the Raider Waite because it looks like it was drawn and colored. I could tell I connected with that deck just by looking at a picture of the Major Arcana online.
A deck that I highly recommend for beginners is The Connolly deck. It is mostly classic Rider-Waite imagery rendered in beautiful, bright colored pencil. My favorite thing is that the two cards that scare beginners the most, Death and The Devil, have been altered to Transition and Materialism, respectively.
I recommend the deck I learned with and still use often as my main work horse which is the Thoth deck by Crowley. Hehe, it's often said to be the last deck you want to learn from, but honestly once you commit to learning with that deck & you honestly have to have a passion & want to learn the Tarot or don't bother. Go get a RWS deck & read from the book. If you do have the drive & passion learn the Thoth & all the planetary, Zodiac & elemental symbols then start doing 3 card practice spreads & practice not memorizing the divinative meanings, but learn how to read all 3 cards in a whole because the tarot works best when you let the cards communicate with each other & tell a story rather than reading them by them selves. I found doing 3 card spreads with any deck & practice expressing what the cards are saying as a whole. Don't read each card separate then try to relate it to it's position, but rather ignor the position in this practice spread & focus what the cards are telling each other & all together telling you. Now I only was kind of teasing about learning with the Thoth, but if it calls to you like it called to me even through my dreams before I even owned it once you learn that deck every other deck it like childs play. It's very true what most Thoth readers say if you can read well with the Thoth you can master pretty much any other deck off the back espcially any RW stlye decks because the lack of planetary & Zodiac symbols the Rider Waite cards carry & with the Thoth you just don't read the cards image you also have the Zodiac, elemental & planetary symbols to tell you much more which makes in my opinion a much more powerful informative read because instead of you asking your client more questions to make up for the lack of work the RW deck does for you the Thoth does a lot more for you alone & telling a lot more without the need of asking the client anything pretty much. If that makes any sense. Some readers say the simpler the cards the better, but not really because over all they have to put more energy in or intuitively have to drag more imformation out of the client, but once you begin reading the Thoth on a subconscious level the many symbols do allow your intuition which is much like a muscle that you work out & it gets much stronger working on a much higher level than if you trained & worked out with a lower frequency deck you'll find no need to know anything about your cilent for the cards will expose all. But with all that said even if you feel the Thoth isn't your cul of tea, it's still great to work out with it because like I said your intuition is much like a muscle on your body. In order to make it stronger & not just bigger, but grow real muscle you need to work out with heavier & more intense workouts. So after you work out you intuition & mind with the a deck like the Thoth & let's say the spread I use exclusively which is the Opening Of The Key when you go back to what you feel you connect with like any RW style deck & using a spread like the Celtic Cross you'll find yourself possibly wanting to only read with a deck like the Thoth because despite if you like how other look a lot more it's all about how they work as a tool not just some pretty piece's of abstact art that you need to memorize. hehe.
I love the recommendations :) Just a suggestion for anyone wanting a more beautiful version of the Rider Waite I bought the Pamela Colman Smith Commemorative Set and the deck that comes with it is absolutely gorgeous the colours are more muted so it is not so yellowish and the backing is a beautiful light blue with the rose from the death card it also came with a lovely book about Pamela Colman Smith and Arthur Edward Waite's book The Pictorial Key to the Tarot
I loved starting with the Robin Wood tarot. I did not connect with it at first and played with the Gaian tarot at the beginning, but the Robin Wood book is exceptional. And when it clicked with the deck, it became my workhorse deck!
Thank you for this. I am new to tarot and now I have a deck in mind. I have a deck but it just confuses me to no end. So it just set on the shelf. But I have six oracle decks and use four of them daily. Thank you again!
the thing i like about the ryder watie smith decks are the stock, i wished other card decks had the same stock because i hate when you have them only for a week or two then they go bend/buckle.
Avalon I have really been enjoying your Tarot Deck reviews. It does make such a difference what decks you start with and what decks your grow with as a Tarot reader. Great job.
I absolutely love my shadowscapes deck! It has such a good energy it has showed me a lot. I always have wonderful reading with it. I use mine for personal readings only
Thank you so much for this video. Even though you originally posted it 5 years ago, it came to me at just the right time. About 5 months ago I dove head first into learning tarot. I had no decks at the time. I acquired a few right away, and about 2 months ago I came across this video. Based on your review here, I ordered the Nine Lives Tarot and I absolutely love it! I highly recommend it for beginners (or any level). I'm also a huge fan of the Morgan Greer deck..it was one of the first decks I purchased in July 2019 when I began learning Tarot and doing readings for myself and others, and I also have the smaller deck in a tin now. In addition, here are some of my recommendations for folks interested in more traditional RWS decks that can really help with learning the Rider-Waite-Smith system and symbols..they are all available on Amazon or bookdepository.com unless otherwise noted: (1) The Smith-Waite Centennial Tarot (2) The Radiant Wise Spirit Tarot (note: I personally love the color tones and that it's borderless) (3) The Golden Art Nouveau Tarot (note: this is a stunning deck, really beautiful, not the original RWS drawings but very faithful to the original content) (4) The Premium Tarot von A.E. Waite (comes in standard size, pocket size, and deluxe). Note: This particular deck has helped me to study and learn the original artwork of RWS more than any other deck..the images are crisp and clear, and the cardstock is amazing..but just an fyi, it's a bit challenging to know whether you're getting a deck with German or English titles on the cards - mine came in German but I love it anyway, perhaps more so (5) The C.S. Tarot Deck (note: not available on Amazon etc.. you'll need to go to his website conradsteyn.wixsite.com) This is a beautiful deck..Conrad has added beautiful hues and crackling background to original RWS artwork.(6) The Rock n Roll Tarot Deck by Vickie Verlie (order from her website vickieverlie.com under Divination Tools). This is a unique deck..RWS images surrounded by psychedelic keywords on each card..it's a great way to learn basic meanings for each of the cards in a RWS deck, and the psychedelic font and colors really does activate your intuition as well.
@Catherine Harper Sorry for the delay in replying. To answer your question I don't own or know that much about the Anamisim deck other then the fact that it is or at least was a majors only deck. That's all I can really say. Sorry I wans't of more help.
@Catherine Harper Yes, I would say the closest match to the Druidcraft in terms of themes and art style that fits within the beginner's spectrum would be either the Llewellyn Tarot or the Sacred Circle tarot. There are I'm sure many others. However I have not personally handled them and so I can't recommend them.
Loved this video! I for one have been pulled towards tarot cards and readings for a very long time! Can't wait for more insight on different topics from you!
Beautiful suggestions Avalon. The Crystal Visions has a companion book! I bought mine from Jennifer Galasso's website. It's only slightly expands upon the info in the LWB, so not really worth buying if you have plenty of other reference books (particularly Barbara Moore's Tarot spreads, which you mentioned in your other video). Thanks for enabling my tarot collecting pursuit! ;) Blessed be! :) xx
I also love the Druidcraft deck. For me it was the perfect balance between the traditional RWS and symbolism and artwork I really connected with. Bit of a chore with my small hands though.
Thank-you, I wish you spoke a little slower and enunciated words more. CC is not good nor does slowing video down work. Some of us have trouble hearing some words well. I appreciate your help and effort.
The very first deck you pulled out is the first deck and only deck I have. I love the Tarot Cards! Like you I find the yellow a bit overbearing. I don't mind the boarders. As when I very first signed up to face book, I used the tarot card daily. Those cards are the same as that first deck you pulled out. But thank you for making a video tarot cards!
thank u I was wondering what ones to get for a new beginner Luke my self that u for the help...ive been working with rune stones do u now of what one to get...ive need the book so b if u now were to get the real one ..ive love it...ive just need to now were to find the real good one thank u so much u were a lot of help for me
I started off with the RW deck, but hated it because of the colours. Lately I came across the borderless RW-S deck and it is just beautiful. The colours are muted and it looks "old". The stock is great and this is now my go-to deck.
I have the legacy of the divine tarot and this is one deck I can't seem to connect with although saying that I do love the artwork on the cards j have 2 of marcheti decks this and the gilded tarot
This video was super useful! I did dabble in Tarot a while ago, but with a deck I don't connect with (manga tarot) but I've been wanting to go back into, but looking around, I found it difficult to navigate all those decks that are available.
I LOVED your video. I have been trying to decide where to start on this journey. You gave some really great advice, as well as, reviewed a few of the decks I was already looking at! I think I am going to go with the Druid Craft tarot. It looked nice, but more simple imagery. I loved the book seems to be very detailed and full of information. You seemed to really praise it, which helps me go with my gut feeling on it. I love the Tarot Illuminati deck , also. I have a feeling it will be my 2nd deck. I have felt drawn to that deck from the beginning, but thinking it might be better suited once I am feeling more familiar. Thank you for sharing, I should check out more of your videos!
Little tip for those with the Morgan - Greer deck, a fab resource for discussing the symbolism of this deck and a comparison with the RWS decks is Spiritual Tarot by Sgne E Echols. It is an invaluable resource for the Morgan - Greer. If you have that deck, get the spiritual Tarot book, you would be glad you did.
Could you please help me with picking a first deck for my granddaughter’s first deck & intro to Tarot. I got her the book “How to Deal.” Something hip but colorful that would help draw her in to the magic of the Tarot?
Hmmm the Clover tarot is both of those things but contains nudity. The Lumina Tarot is a good choice as it’s beautiful, modern and quite popular. The shadowsacpes Tarot would make make an interesting choice also. It’s been around for a little while. It really depends on her preferred art style.
the unkown guidebook sucked but was pretty. linestrider has an amazing book. I already owned two traditional old tarot books prior which are my mum's handed down with her notes in it. love my books and decks so far
I bought the Druid Tarot cards but unfortunately it came with a very small companion book The same size as the cards .. Where can I buy the larger Book ??
my first deck was wild unkown amazing deck. second was linestrider tarot.not beginner decks! I have universal Waite on the way for learning and shadowscapes tarot also my mum is gifting me truth seeker's tarot? I connect with my linestrider and especially my wild unkown but the symbolism is hard for a beginner heh
Hi Avalon! I'm wondering if you have a copy of the Druid Craft Companion book I can purchase? I have the deck but only the LWB that comes with. Many thanks in advance - I love your videos!!
I’m new to tarot cards and oracle cards and I just purchased my first deck and got Rebecca Campbell work your light and I wanna learn more and start journaling my readings. Any advice or tips or books you recommend I read??
Ok question one, how do you know which deck is right for you? 2) do you have a video on basic Break down of Tarot meanings and understanding how to read each card, and how to read them in a spread? If you don't mind these are my 2 questions so far. Thank you
Majestic Spirit I do have plans to make a Tarot Basics video this year. In the meantime though, Kelly-Anne of the Four Queens as a beginners Tarot series that's quite good.
I never had a RWS deck, the back design turns me off, ha. I started with, 'tarot of a moon garden' and i still have that one 20 years later, its solid! I have just figured something out, i just realized i like decks that dont have humans, ha. Can you do a review of non human decks, ha. Theres a challenge. I love, love, love the 'Cats Eye Tarot', theres a few humans in the background, but they dont distract from the art and the messages, LOL. But i just went through my stuff and i have 'the dragon tarot' too, i am very drawn to the background scenery. I pull one card out, just one , thats all i can handle, ha, spooky stuff. Usually one card is enough to freak me out. :]
I really liked the Crystal Visions Tarot. I am new to tarot cards but I feel that deck would work for me. Since there is so much out there for tarot cards, is there a particular reference book you would recommend for that deck? I felt a bit overwhelmed when searching for one.
Hello! I have a quick question. Where do you get your bags that you keep your deck and books in? I've been looking everywhere for big bags like those. Thank you so much hope to hear from you soon. :) Also loved your video it was very helpful.
No, that type of information because apparent to you when you start working with a particular deck. Another thing can give you a hint are decks that follow specific themes.
I also have a few questions and maybe you can put up a video regarding my silly questions but if and when you have a chance, would love to talk to you! Let me know if and when your available!
Ahhh Debra, your in for a treat! That deck is called "Soul Cards1". They are completely intuitive Oracle cards, nu-numbered and without titles. Those who read with these need to rely solely on their intuition. Its an AMAZING deck to work with. Do check them out, There is Soul Cards One and Soul Cards 2 and they can be combined :-) Have fun!
Great video thanks, two questions, pls can u let me know the ISBN number from the druid craft box, there is confusion on amazon uk as to which is full size book n which is pamphlet in with cards. My second question, the ceck u descdibe as beautiful and has brown card back with water colour images, please can u say what its called, u said lewellin but not deck name. Its the deck Before legacy of the divine. many thanks peace n light x
thats wonderful thanks x May I also ask, the deck u describe as beautiful and has brown card back with water colour images, please can u say what its called? u said its by Lewellyn but not deck name. Its the deck Before legacy of the divine. You tempt me with such lovely deck goodness, every time :) many thanks peace n light
soz dyselxic moment all of your reply didn't show up at first. many thanks soz for face palm moment DOH!!! I was thinking llewellyn was the publisher not the name of the deck oops.
Secrets of Tarot or Angel tarot have key words. The angel one is a bit more accurate and well known as far as the definition, not to mention it’s got a very beginners feel
I would love to get you opinion / overview of the wildwood Tarot. My friend gave me it for my birthday and I am learning it now I find I conect really well with it. I do question starting my tarot journey with this deck because it differs from the basic Tarot deck. I have not shuffled I am still Researching it until I feel ready to start my readings.
I have a question for you. Near the beginning of your video you had mentioned the card of your birth...your birth card. How would I know what card is my birth card? I was born on may 11th 1978 what would be my birth card?
Jus have to feel it an for advice an what you need to know ask the Oracle cards for daily advice an stuff like that. They sell them on ebay. you should get sum Oracle cards
Great video! Crystal Visions has a companion book available now on Jennifer’s website. www.jennifergalasso.com/CVT/decksets.html It’s really a beautiful deck. Isn’t funny how some of the decks we are not really drawn to give us great readings. I expect it means I have something to learn from that deck. That happened to me with Deviant Moon. Was not drawn to the art but I get the best readings from it. It’s a very blunt deck. Have the Witches Tarot but have not tried it yet. Shadowscapes I need reading glasses to see it but I love the artwork but I agreed the cards need to be bigger. I’ve starting looking at the pictures on my iPad as it’s bigger. Also, there is a Czech deck that is larger! I have two copies of the Druid craft and I’m thinking of trimming one. It’s beautiful! I’m very drawn to the Illuminati and the Llewellyn as well. One deck I have that I LOVE is the Joie de Vivre deck. The readings I get from that deck are amazing. While it only comes with a little white book it tells the story of each character with both upright and reversed meanings. Thank you for this great video!
I'm not into tarot (yet) but i can already tell that i loathe the rider waite artstyle, the symbolism i love but the yellows and all that are disgusting to me XD
+BeingErin hahahahah yes its true, I have an interesting personality as most if us do however I'm often compared to a man emotionally due to my complete lack of sensitivity lol my friends and I joke about it alot lol
+Avalon's Spiritual Odyssey I've never known an ENTJ to be into anything like this - it's usually us NFs. You had the energy of an ENFP in a different video so I really was surprised.
+BeingErin I've never thought about correlating MB personalities with people's interest into occult! I'm an INTJ but I've always been into occult topics. Hmm, interesting!
Gosh I can't believe I have been watching your videos since about this time. I still do love your videos from this time to current ones.
Thank you 🙏
Everyone trashes the Raider Waite deck because of its coloring and thick lines, but I actually LOVE the look of it. The light colors and soft lines on other decks distract me, I think I connect with the art style in the Raider Waite because it looks like it was drawn and colored. I could tell I connected with that deck just by looking at a picture of the Major Arcana online.
*Abi, I agree.* I read with the RWS almost exclusively in the beginning, and *_still_* so appreciate it.
♥️
Same
I have learned to love it also
I know this is an old video post but the information and advice still hold true. Thanks.
Blessed be Avalon.
This a superb list! Most are on my beginner suggested list. Multiple thumbs up!
Thank you
I love the original deck and have had mine since 1989: very important deck for everyone to start with and have. My thoughts. :)

Get the kind that has the meanings wrote on each of them. I found this to be veryyyy helpful
One of my favorite decks is the Druidcraft tarot. I'm so drawn to the Ace of Wands that I would love to have it as a tattoo!
the thing i like about the ryder watie smith decks are the stock, i wished other card decks had the same stock because i hate when you have them only for a week or two then they go bend/buckle.
Avalon I have really been enjoying your Tarot Deck reviews. It does make such a difference what decks you start with and what decks your grow with as a Tarot reader. Great job.
I love the shadowscapes tarot deck! Im going to get the Morgan Greer one tonight!
Very cool!
I absolutely love my shadowscapes deck! It has such a good energy it has showed me a lot. I always have wonderful reading with it. I use mine for personal readings only
Skylar, I also prefer the Shadowscapes for personal work. It doesn't *_show_* well on camera (not quite vibrant enough).
♥️
I know what you mean. I have a deck

Very informative and really interesting. Thank you so much for doing this video, was perfect timing for me!

Yes, I agree with your Shadowscapes Tarot deck comment of the cards being too small.
I just love the twin deck herd many many chants from ppl singing n dancing to Keiths takeway
@Catherine Harper Yes, I would say the closest match to the Druidcraft in terms of themes and art style that fits within the beginner's spectrum would be either the Llewellyn Tarot or the Sacred Circle tarot. I would always recommend the morgan gree...love that theres no borders
Beautiful suggestions Avalon. The Crystal Visions has a companion book! I bought mine from Jennifer Galasso's website. Omg! I had no idea! How, how! Thanks for the tip Gemma!
I also love the Druidcraft deck. For me it was the perfect balance between the traditional RWS and symbolism and artwork I really connected with. Bit of a chore with my small hands though.
i'm not sure if it's just me but please check your video for audio problems.
It wasn't you
Perhaps it's my American English, but I find it hard to catch the names of the Decks.
Astro Alice I heard clicks. A bit scary.
Thank-you, I wish you spoke a little slower and enunciated words more. CC is not good nor does slowing video down work. Some of us have trouble hearing some words well.
I appreciate your help and effort.

thank u so much u were a lot of help for me
I started off with the RW deck, but hated it because of the colours. Lately I came across the borderless RW-S deck and it is just beautiful. The colours are muted and it looks "old". The stock is great and this is now my go-to deck.
Fantastic!
I love that deck with the angels.

The Druid Craft is an excellent choice, gentle, helpful and wise in many way. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do :-)
you rock as a life Coach i use Ryder..but i didn't know there were so many...
I hear that. I know the RWS is "the standard, " but I can't connect with the RWS that well.
I love my companion books
What card represents birth month for febuary. thanks
Little tip for those with the Morgan - Greer deck, a fab resource for discussing the symbolism of this deck and a comparison with the RWS decks is Spiritual Tarot by Sgne E Echols. Love your Harry Potter sence! Beautiful
What tarot cards to start with as beginner as and empath.?? Never done anything like this.?

Hi Avalon! I'm wondering if you have a copy of the Druid Craft Companion book I can purchase? I have the deck but only the LWB that comes with. Many thanks in advance - I love your videos!!
Go on ebay for to buy them
Helpful! Thank you for sharing
I’m new to tarot cards and oracle cards and I just purchased my first deck and got Rebecca Campbell work your light and I wanna learn more and start journaling my readings. Any advice or tips or books you recommend I read??
Lots, I have several videos dedicated to the subject
Great picks here! xoxo
Thank you so very much
I almost have every tarot deck you suggest except the nine lives tarot. Looks great. Will have a look at it.
It's a lovely fun deck. And Annette the artist is the sweetest person.
Excellent Video! Thank you for sharing (:
I really liked the Crystal Visions Tarot. I am new to tarot cards but I feel that deck would work for me. Since there is so much out there for tarot cards, is there a particular reference book you would recommend for that deck? I felt a bit overwhelmed when searching for one.

Hello! I have a quick question. Where do you get your bags that you keep your deck and books in? I've been looking everywhere for big bags like those. Thank you so much hope to hear from you soon. :) Also loved your video it was very helpful.
From a place called Tree of Life. They are upcycled sari material
How do you find out if a deck is attuned for a particular type of reading? Does it say on the box?
No, that type of information because apparent to you when you start working with a particular deck. Another thing can give you a hint are decks that follow specific themes.
have you tried the tarot apocolypsis yet?
+Kristi Huffman-Green I have not. But I hear good things so maybe 😁
I also have a few questions and maybe you can put up a video regarding my silly questions but if and when you have a chance, would love to talk to you! Let me know if and when your available!
Majestic Spirit Ooo what kind of questions???
Do you know of any Egyptian style decks. I’m having trouble finding one that I like
Sarana Tari Egyptian Tarot Deck www.amazon.com/dp/073870010X/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_i-PRCb0EKQWEJ
I'd love to find a tarot deck based on winter and snow. any suggestions of deck tittles to on the look out for?
Janet Boyer Snowland Tarot. I think it's out.
There's one on Etsy for $39.95, no box or bag.
What is the name of your deck that is sitting to your left and my right...it was beckoning to me.
Tarot of the Illuminati looks very nice. Do you personally read reverse cards or no?
Yes I do
Do you have to be a witch to read tarot ? I have different beliefs but very open to wanting to learn . :)
You do not need to be a witch to read tarot. Tarot can be read by anyone.
Namaste am from India....I use Psychic Tarot...have u tried Zen Osho?
You mean a Osho Zen!

The deck right before time 22:49 you never said the name, you just said people say it’s the most beautiful.
Lab Rat it’s the Llewellyn Tarot
Avalon Cameron thank you!
hey there namaste from INDIA....am new to tarot... looking for a deck which has key words.....can u suggest?
Secrets of Tarot or Angel tarot have key words. The angel one is a bit more accurate and well known as far as the definition, not to mention it’s got a very beginners feel
Avalon said the Hierophant card was her birth card. How do you determine your birth card?
You work it out in the same way as you do with your astrology number. Or you can simply work off your month of birth.
How much are the classes just wondering.??
Not sure anymore
Is there a gold foiled Witches Tarot deck?
not that I know of, the Silver Witchcraft Tarot is silver foiled.
Kindly hold the cards up a bit longer.
I love that deck and have actually done a review of it :-) I also recommend it in my Tarot Intermediate video :-)
Avalon's Spiritual Odyssey Thank You so much I will take a look at the review.
those cards really don't speak or translate to me
Blessing sweetie and 😊
Watching in 2018. Great video. :)
I have a question for you. Near the beginning of your video you had mentioned the card of your birth...your birth card. How would I know what card is my birth card? I was born on may 11th 1978 what would be my birth card?
You would then be the Heirophant :-) using the standard month of birth method :-)
Question how do you find your birth card?
Jus have to feel it an for advice an what you need to know ask the Oracle cards for daily advice an stuff like that. They sell them on ebay. you should get sum Oracle cards
thank you sweety :) xx
:-) xo
This video just won't play got me I have tried multiple times. 😟
Bummer, I'm not sure why they could be.
Great video! Crystal Visions has a companion book available now on Jennifer’s website. www.jennifergalasso.com/CVT/decksets.html
It’s really a beautiful deck.
Thank you for this great video!
g'day mate
🇦🇺
I want to adopt you.
I'm not into tarot (yet) but i can already tell that i loathe the rider waite artstyle, the symbolism i love but the yellows and all that are disgusting to me XD
Do you know your Myers-Briggs personality type? You scream ENFP to me :)
actually I'm an ENTJ lol
Avalon's Spiritual Odyssey That's so interesting! Never would've picked that one!
