  • Stories of the Irish Famine - Remembered in Newfoundland
Here is yet another brilliant account from Patricia Dohey from rural St. Bride’s, Newfoundland that I recorded in 2019.
It’s a short clip where she tells me how they learned about the Famine in Ireland via the stories of her mother and father. These were not passed on in school but passed on in the oral tradition when she grew up in Kilbride.
In the clip she also talks of the hardship remembered and their connection to a place called Ireland. This is deep rooted and because these people were remote and lived and intermarried with just other Irish, they never lost this connection.
I’ve been sharing clips of Patricia on my folklore.ie page for weeks and said I’d share this in case ye missed them. I know many Irish people settled in Newfoundland before the Famine, but many came at that time also. Love how she also has that story that they came as farmers but became fishermen - a story I heard a lot of there. Listen to her accent too.
