What Aperture Gives The Sharpest Print?

  • This week we are going to cover how to determine the sharpest aperture to use while printing in the darkroom. Not all f/stops are the same, some leave the image a little soft, some introduce diffraction, and some are just right. These are easy steps and you should have your answer in just an hour or two.

    Thanks for this video! Your test shows the differences very clearly - I'm amazed at just how dramatic the differences were between f/2.8 and f/5.6.

    I realised how lucky I am using the intrepid enlarger as since the last update I can change the led brightness (taking my prints from 2 seconds to 7 currently).
    I generally avoid going over f/11 on cameras but it’s interesting to see that f/11 isn’t a hard limit

    Good to know that I don't lose anything by printing at F11 or F16 mostly. I enjoy having longer exposure times because it gives me great control when dodging or burning in.
    Thanks for this test, will do this once I receive my Intrepid enlarger with my Rodenstock N's.

      And longer exposures times gives a nice window to hit the right exposure and remove effects from handling your paper/enlarger.

    Good to know. I've kind of figured that stopping the aperture down would yield a sharper image. My mindset being that it would work like a camera lens by having a larger depth of field and less chance of stuff being out of focus. And this at least confirms that the high aperture yields better results to a point.
    I've been using f16-f22 because of this, but also because my mechanical timer is not always precisely the time I set it. The precision can vary up to half a second, sometime a full second. So, I expose longer to minimize that error. Good to know that the aperture settings I'm using aren't adversely affecting the image quality.

    I generally try to keep my exposure times between 10-20 seconds and set the aperture accordingly. If I find that my aperture ends up at f/16 or f/22, I’ll put a piece of diffusion between the negative and light to cut down the light and let me open up the aperture so that I’m in the f/5.6-f/11 range.

    Very useful, especially as I use the same 100mm for my 6x9 enlarging

    I feel like f/11 while not "sharper" was a bit tighter, especially on the V. I think f11 is the peak sharpness.

      @@TheNakedPhotographer Kind of, but that video (though great) didn’t really show the effects of dodging and burning with different filters. Like how different it is to burn in clouds with a Grade 0 vs. a Grade 5. Just an idea.... Thanks for all the hard work!

    Hi there and happy new year. How do i search your channel for video on how to get the best tonal black and white. I was about to right “contrast” but im not sure that what im looking for. Actually i gave up on printing black and white because i allways ended up getting some very dull prints despite i was trying to print splitgrade printing eith nder the lens ilford filters. Mabey im not good enought /aware of the photograph in it self.. i mean howit is exposed …i guees it all starts with the photograph … anyway , now im ready again to try to get some good black and white pictures and prints but i need some good advices and some of your great videos to start on. Kind regards jesprt

    Love the video, and greatly enjoyed the proof of concept of both this and the last video. I do have a theory question. What are your thoughts on using an enlarger lens for the next larger format when making enlargements? I.E. using an 80mm lens for 35mm film. Do you think it would help to reduce diffractction in the corners of prints at smaller apertures?

    • @TheNakedPhotographer
      @TheNakedPhotographer  3 роки тому

      I use the 100mm for 35mm and MF film since it’s easier with my big enlarger. With low quality lenses it can avoid soft corners, but with good modern lenses it doesn’t matter in my opinion.

    Hi there. Ive been printing color for some time using your great videos and ive gotten some very nice pictures for my walls in my home. What i need , i think, is to get some more contrast in my prints and ive been using
    hydrogen peroxide as you describe as a quick and easy way with some results. Now im thinking of getting a better enlarger lens ( actually im quit satisfied with the one i have now in terms of sharpness ( rodagon 80 mm 5.6 ) but maybe a better / more expensiv lens can boost the contrast more) . So my question is : do you think that this can display a visible difference in contrast ( ive been looking at some rodenstock apo lenses for 6x6 ) kind regards jesper

    • @TheNakedPhotographer

      Do you develop your own film or have a lab do it? You may try developing a little longer to increase contrast, but I would only try 15-30 seconds longer. Another method is making contrast increase masks. That is time and labor intensive.

    • @jesperbent3685
      @jesperbent3685 3 роки тому

      Yes i develop my own film and never thought about that. So i will try and folllow your advice here. Thanks again for all your fantastic help and great videos. 👍
