The disrespect of the funeral home was heartbreaking. I can't imagine a grieving family being told their beloved daughter was not refrigerated or embalmed but left to decompose while in their care. 💔

we don't know all the information. maybe they did absolutely everything that they could. sadly though we're not magicians and cant reverse the decomposition that would have happened before Lena was brought into their care (from not being found until 24-48 hours after death, the fact it was warm outside so she was exposed to hot air and insect activity during this time due to having windows open, to then been kept at the office of the medical examiner in order to carry out the post mortem. embalming doesn't stop decomposition. it just slows it down. we can't undo what has already been done. all we can do is treat and try and repair any damage that has been done and then try to hide it with sutures, wax and cosmetics...but these things will most likely then be visible instead of the original damage. call me an optimist and crazy, but i have faith that those embalmers did everything they could to help. i know this because ive been in a similar situation that theyre in; someone has been brought into my care for me to embalm and try to restore. and ive tried everything i can, ive spent hours and days trying to make things perfect. but it cant. you advise the family on whats going on and that youve tried everything. they look better than they did before you did anything to/for them... but they dont look as peaceful as you want or as the family is expecting, or look "as if theyre sleeping". all we can do is advise and then be there to hear the family scream andoffer them comfort when they cry. please know that when these things arent perfect, its not disrespect or because we dont care. we do. we often go home and cry to our families and carry immense guilt over feeling that we have somehow made your grief wore when our job is to make that grief easier to bare.
@@lunarose8320 if she had been too decomposed before going into the care of the funeral home then an open casket wouldn't have been planned and further the family would have been notified before the funeral was scheduled to take place, You might not want to admit it but this was a pure case of negligence. They let her decompose likely for racist reasons although it was potentially just pure laziness and or incompetence, hard to say.
@@Aurelius-bf3yx not necessarily. The funeral home might have, incorrectly, said yes to an open casket funeral before she came to the funeral home from the medical examiner's office. They shouldn't have done that, no. Or the medical examiner could have, again incorrectly, told the family that she was in a viewable condition when she wasn't. I've experienced that happening many times unfortunately. My point is that we just don't have enough information to blindly assume one thing to be true without any facts to back it up. The family themselves might have the answers, but we don't

As a Black woman this was so hard to listen to. To know that we can be brutally raped and murdered, after escaping poverty and going to college to become an engineer, just to be called a prostitute is so painful. Not to mention the jack of attention from media and the utter lack of care from the cops who originally worked the case.
It's so sad how even at our best we're still looked down upon. Even in death we're looked at as less than..😓 if she was a Natalee halloway or Gabby Petito look alike I guarantee you she wouldn't have gotten the poor recognition she received in her case. God forbid if she looked like they did and the funeral home let her body rot. There would've been absolute hell of the highest order to pay.
The world really lost someone special when Lena was killed. She sounded SOOOOO amazing, so smart, talented, driven, a wonderful friend and on top of all of that and so much more im sure she was also beautiful on the inside and out. What a tragic loss. I am not at the end yet but i am SO happy this one is solved.
I literally forgot for the first 13 minutes that I’m watching a true crime video. I was so happy that her hard work paid off, that she got into the university that she wanted, that she found great friends, that she graduated with honors and got to start such a promising career and all that as a disadvantage black woman. Man life is sad.

no okay, i never comment on your videos but I am LIVID that the funeral home neglected Lena’s body. regardless of if it was an open casket or not, it’s THEIR job to ensure her body is properly embalmed. that’s disgusting and I hope they were held accountable because that poor family did not deserve that.
Joe was such a gem. A perfect guy for Lena. Especially how he was thinking back to their happy times after years of the murder and then he got a detective back on her case, it made me both sad and happy. He by doing so helped put the killer's DNA on database so I believe he did finally play his part in solving his girlfriend's murder.

This doesn't pertain to the video, but if Eleanor could share this story. A girl named Jennifer Caridad has been missing from Sunnyside, WA since August. She was last seen with her ex boyfriend Aurelio Escobar. Her ex went on a crime spree through Washington state and into Oregon that ended in a shoot out with police in Medford, Oregon. During this crime spree he stole Jennifer's parents car. The car was later recovered close to a lake in Yakima, WA with a significant amount of blood in the back seat. Jennifer's clothes and some belonging were also found at said lake. Jennifer Caridad has been missing since August and the police have given up on finding her. Supposedly they sent the blood in the back of the car for DNA testing but told the public it could take up to 8 month to find out if it's Jennifer blood or not. A former FBI agent has commented on this case saying there is no reason Sunnyside and Yakima police have handled this case this way, and there is no reason for the DNA test to take 8 months!

@Bitchjasper the cops found her parents car abandoned at Berglund Lake on the Greenway. That's where Jennifer's ex shot a man that was fishing with his daughter and stole that man's car. It was only covered briefly I'm not surprised you haven't heard much and of course YPD isn't commenting on anything 🙄
@@Carmen-us1ew they did have underwater divers come look but they didn't find anything. From the info that we do know it's thought that she is somewhere between Umatilla/Hermiston and Yakima. After they looked with the divers and didn't find anything in the lake law enforcement really gave up. There hasn't been any other searches done by law enforcement or even with their help since a couple days after Jennifer went missing.

If only they had opened the wallet and inspected every piece of it, they would have found the evidence to go forward with this case that remained unsolved for so long, deeply upsetting and heartbreaking, especially for her parents who took it to their graves not knowing what happened to their daughter.
@@bookcreator yes, but they didn't even have a single lead that was the issue. finding that fingerprint and identifying someone who was close or at the crime scene would've been huge for them at the time. they would have had a suspect or at least a witness or person of interest.

I hate that there's a trend with these cases. It's always the person who's working hard, succeeding and a genuine soul who gets the worst hand in life. She would've been such a vital asset to society and yet it was torn away. It seriously depresses me man. It's always the people who are the most valuable to society that get taken away ... the trend is among cases which are more often reported on. how useful someone is to society should not impact how you feel about their death. an innocent death is an innocent death.

Simply how my mind works, whether or not that makes you think I'm a bad person is null. That being said, I also don't sit and compare or rank innocent deaths. It's pointless really, they're gone. Nothing we can do now but try and control the emotions that come with knowing they've been deleted.
lmao just as many ”not valuabe to society” people are murdered, you just dont hear about them. in fact people (especially women) who ”arent valuable” are murdered and assaulted at a much higher rate than succesful people. people just dont care about them, so their cases dont get covered.
I really appreciate you not skipping over the fact that there is a huge disparity between the way black victims of crime are treated compared to white victims, not only by the police but by the media. Way too many channels gloss over this fact in fear of alienating their subscribers which is a huge disservice to the victims and their families. This was such a tragic case. 😥
Was* a huge disparity. Racism is not present today as it was back in the day. I have no doubt that some cases are racially discriminated against now but it is absolutely nowhere near the amount that it was before. Racism will always be lurking about but it has gotten so much better. Besides, plenty of white folks have been treated the same way this girl had. I’m not someone who cries often, even though I obviously find these cases horrifying and watch a lot of true crime. But hearing about the fact they allowed her body to begin to decompose, and robbed her family of friends of the ability to say goodbye with an open casket, is so tragic and made me cry

wow, lena sounded so incredible. i got so excited when i heard about all the things she achieved - and then i remembered that this was about her murder. people say it in a lot of scenarios, but i really think that she couldve done amazing things in the world and was such an amazing person
The fact that it took them 20 years to DNA check the personal belongings he literally just left AT the crimscene... Like your wallet and the things inside your wallet are things you touch with your bare hands every single day why didn't they think to check for fingerprints on something that the killer no doubt would have touched.
her family and the people around her not understand why she chose tuft is because none of them had ever been to college. she was accepted to harvard and yale but it does not mean she got the funds to go there. tuft probably offered her a full ride. happens all the time.

She said it was because Tufts had the best of the course she wanted. She was offered a lot of scholarships, so it wasn't about the money. Just her choice.

I'm so disgusted at the police who were investigating Lena's murder back in 1992, they didn't seem to want to do their jobs and I feel it's because she was black and I'm disgusted how they let her body decompose and caused the funeral to not happen, makes me so mad.
It genuinely scares me. I’ve never heard of this case before, but I live very close to where it happened. The police in this part are still neglectful to this day if you’d like to know. I know people who have been assaulted, etc and it’s swept under the rug.
Three years ago I found Eleanor's channel and it was my fav true crime (even tho I didn't know many true crime creators back then). Three years later still my favorite. Even tho I follow lots and lots of a amazing creators, nobody tells a story like Eleanor

we don't know all the information. i doubt it was as simple as just let her decay. she would have already been in a state of decomposition before she even got to the funeral home (not being found for 24-48 hours after death, the weather was hot which increases the rate of decomposition, there was most likely an amount of insect activity as well sadly due to her opening all the windows before she was attacked and finally, she would have been held at the medical examiners office for a period of time due to a post mortem needing to be carried out to determine cause of death. if the funeral home were instructed to embalm then im sure they did absolutely everything that they could for poor Lena. Unfortunately embalming cant reverse any decomposition that has already happened. Embalming doesnt even stop any more decomposition from happening. all it is able to do is slow that rate of decomposition down. then there are other things that us embalmers can try and do to return a more peaceful and life like look to the person that has passed. sometimes this is easy to achieve. other times it just isnt possible. i wish we could work miracles and restore everyone to a peaceful look so their family can spend time with them and it simply looks like theyre asleep. but the truth is that sometimes it just isn't possible. embalming is as much an art as it is a science. and the vast majority of us embalmers truly care, deeply, and want to help people and will break our backs and sacrifice aspects of our life in order to take care of those that we have been called upon to serve. please dont let this one case/rendition of the case (which doesnt have any corresponding information-such as a report from the medical examiner, the receiving funeral home or the case analysis & embalming report of the deceased and her condition, as well as what work was carried out by the embalmer at the funeral home mortuary) make you view all of us within the profession in a negative light. i would confidently say that there is most likely information and reports regarding this aspect of the case that is not public knowledge/not available to the laymen which would explain why she was in such a condition.

Also i'm not "making excuses" either. I'm simply offering alternative possible situations seeing as we don't have all of the information that anyone would need to come to a definitive explanation. Another reason for my "making excuses" is because I work in the industry and know how these things work where as a lot of the people stating their opinions as if they're facts simply don't work in the profession and don't have all the information that they'd need to make such bold claims. It's good because they were a person before the case and their memory deserves to be shared but not just for their tragic murder but the life they lived before hand

I like that Eleanor talks about the disparity between how cases with white victims vs black victims are treated very differently. In the 90's my uncle was murdered, stabbed to death and left to die in an alley and it devastated his daughter. As my cousin grew up she desperately wanted to solve her fathers murder. It took alot to even get the police department to even reopen the case. Long story short the police department had a primary suspect and they never did anything because the case file just sat on someone's desk for nearly a decade, and she had to advocate for them to follow through in the suspect. It took nearly 20 years to get the guy but my cousin finally did it.
the “60 seconds” of silence reminds me that the prosecutor for George Floyd did the same thing, making everyone wait in silence for the 7 minutes and 46 seconds that the officer had his knee on Floyd’s neck. we don’t realize that every second is not the same and this tactic makes the jury feel each second as an increasingly crucial and devastating moment.
When he said “we used to hang out right on the steps” I IMMEDIATELY got UPSET. Eleanor thank you SOOOO much for acknowledging the fact that black cases rarely get solved. Made me wanna cry because it’s sad but true even still today.

being from Boston, born and raised, Tufts is an amazing college, on the same level as Harvard Yale Dartmouth Brown Princeton Columbia UPenn and Cornell. Its on what we call the Hidden Ivys alongside Welesleyan, Northeastern, Suffolk, UConn, Stanford, USC, etc. She did good. and this entire case is just so so sad.
I just want to say thank you for how respectful yet interested you are in true crime- I recently unfollowed a few very, very popular creators in the true crime category; because I find it hard to listen when they’re not just focused on story telling , instead they try to be funny or gossipy. You are interesting yet always focus on the people affected and the severity of the situation. You are awesome!!
This is how I feel about Bailey Sarian. I recently unfollowed her because I just can't listen about people dying while she stops to do her makeup or jokes around or puts cringy catch phrases in the middle of a conversation. I don't know. Eleanor just does it correctly, as she should.

CODIS is HONESTLY AMAZING! I've watch countless crime shows and the number of victims FINALLY getting justice ESPECIALLY cold cases is sooooo high. Even after 20-50 years, cold cases get solved. Big kudos to the inventor of it.

I just want to express my appreciation because you are one of the few True Crime UA-camrs who CONSISTENTLY highlight cases for people of color. missing/ murdered Black women, specifically, are often overlooked so thank you for handling these cases with thoughtfulness and dignity and treating our Black queens with the respect they deserve.
I really appreciate how much time you take to talk about the lives of the victims instead of only talking about the crime! It shows us who they really were as a human and not only a victim.

This case is so sad to me. And then when her mom took her dress thinking to see her to say her last goodbyes at her funeral and she couldn’t. That really broke my heart.

Every time I listen to one of these stories when you are describing the victim I always feel like I know the person. I feel like I’m hearing about a friend, and such beautiful soul, it just breaks my heart even more hearing what happened, because you just feel like you knew her 😫 I can’t believe this gorgeous, incredibly smart and sweet young woman was taken so soon. It’s so intimidating when people hang out at your house. We for a bit had a bunch of teens just hanging on our flat building stairs and at some point someone buzzed them in (don’t just buzz anyone in make sure you know they are meant to be!) and they hung out in the hall and being on the ground floor it was RIGHT outside of our flat and it was scary!

It’s truly so sad what happened to her, I genuinely feel like if she was a white woman this would’ve been solved. As a black woman myself I truly fear being attacked and the police completely ignore my case simply because of my skin color. I really hope in the future the police gets better, because even though this happened 25 years ago, POC cases still get overlooked. I mean look at Gabby Petito case, yes what happened to her was sad and she deserved justice but she got wayyyy more media coverage than the POC that were missing for years. The disrespect of the funeral home was heartbreaking. I can't imagine a grieving family being told their beloved daughter was not refrigerated or embalmed but left to decompose while in their care. 💔

we don't know all the information. maybe they did absolutely everything that they could. sadly though we're not magicians and cant reverse the decomposition that would have happened before Lena was brought into their care (from not being found until 24-48 hours after death, the fact it was warm outside so she was exposed to hot air and insect activity during this time due to having windows open, to then been kept at the office of the medical examiner in order to carry out the post mortem.
embalming doesn't stop decomposition. it just slows it down. we can't undo what has already been done. all we can do is treat and try and repair any damage that has been done and then try to hide it with sutures, wax and cosmetics...but these things will most likely then be visible instead of the original damage.
call me an optimist and crazy, but i have faith that those embalmers did everything they could to help. i know this because ive been in a similar situation that theyre in; someone has been brought into my care for me to embalm and try to restore. and ive tried everything i can, ive spent hours and days trying to make things perfect. but it cant. you advise the family on whats going on and that youve tried everything. they look better than they did before you did anything to/for them... but they dont look as peaceful as you want or as the family is expecting, or look "as if theyre sleeping". all we can do is advise and then be there to hear the family scream andoffer them comfort when they cry.
please know that when these things arent perfect, its not disrespect or because we dont care. we do. we often go home and cry to our families and carry immense guilt over feeling that we have somehow made your grief wore when our job is to make that grief easier to bare.
@@lunarose8320 if she had been too decomposed before going into the care of the funeral home then an open casket wouldn't have been planned and further the family would have been notified before the funeral was scheduled to take place, You might not want to admit it but this was a pure case of negligence. They let her decompose likely for racist reasons although it was potentially just pure laziness and or incompetence, hard to say.

They shouldn't have done that, no. Or the medical examiner could have, again incorrectly, told the family that she was in a viewable condition when she wasn't. I've experienced that happening many times unfortunately. My point is that we just don't have enough information to blindly assume one thing to be true without any facts to back it up. The family themselves might have the answers, but we don't

As a Black woman this was so hard to listen to. To know that we can be brutally raped and murdered, after escaping poverty and going to college to become an engineer, just to be called a prostitute is so painful. Not to mention the jack of attention from media and the utter lack of care from the cops who originally worked the case.

Even in death we're looked at as less than..😓 if she was a Natalee halloway or Gabby Petito look alike I guarantee you she wouldn't have gotten the poor recognition she received in her case. I was so happy that her hard work paid off, that she got into the university that she wanted, that she found great friends, that she graduated with honors and got to start such a promising career and all that as a disadvantage black woman. Joe was such a gem. A perfect guy for Lena. Especially how he was thinking back to their happy times after years of the murder and then he got a detective back on her case, it made me both sad and happy. He by doing so helped put the killer's DNA on database so I believe he did finally play his part in solving his girlfriend's murder.

This doesn't pertain to the video, but if Eleanor could share this story. A girl named Jennifer Caridad has been missing from Sunnyside, WA since August. She was last seen with her ex boyfriend Aurelio Escobar. Her ex went on a crime spree through Washington state and into Oregon that ended in a shoot out with police in Medford, Oregon. During this crime spree he stole Jennifer's parents car. The car was later recovered close to a lake in Yakima, WA with a significant amount of blood in the back seat. Jennifer's clothes and some belonging were also found at said lake. Jennifer Caridad has been missing since August and the police have given up on finding her. Supposedly they sent the blood in the back of the car for DNA testing but told the public it could take up to 8 month to find out if it's Jennifer blood or not. A former FBI agent has commented on this case saying there is no reason Sunnyside and Yakima police have handled this case this way, and there is no reason for the DNA test to take 8 months!

@Bitchjasper the cops found her parents car abandoned at Berglund Lake on the Greenway. That's where Jennifer's ex shot a man that was fishing with his daughter and stole that man's car. It was only covered briefly I'm not surprised you haven't heard much and of course YPD isn't commenting on anything 🙄

@@Carmen-us1ew they did have underwater divers come look but they didn't find anything. From the info that we do know it's thought that she is somewhere between Umatilla/Hermiston and Yakima. After they looked with the divers and didn't find anything in the lake law enforcement really gave up. There hasn't been any other searches done by law enforcement or even with their help since a couple days after Jennifer went missing.

@@bookcreator yes, but they didn't even have a single lead that was the issue. finding that fingerprint and identifying someone who was close or at the crime scene would've been huge for them at the time. they would have had a suspect or at least a witness or person of interest.

I really appreciate you not skipping over the fact that there is a huge disparity between the way black victims of crime are treated compared to white victims, not only by the police but by the media. wow, lena sounded so incredible. i got so excited when i heard about all the things she achieved - and then i remembered that this was about her murder. people say it in a lot of scenarios, but i really think that she couldve done amazing things in the world and was such an amazing person
The fact that it took them 20 years to DNA check the personal belongings he literally just left AT the crimscene... Like your wallet and the things inside your wallet are things you touch with your bare hands every single day why didn't they think to check for fingerprints on something that the killer no doubt would have touched.

we don't know all the information. i doubt it was as simple as just let her decay. she would have already been in a state of decomposition before she even got to the funeral home (not being found for 24-48 hours after death, the weather was hot which increases the rate of decomposition, there was most likely an amount of insect activity as well sadly due to her opening all the windows before she was attacked and finally, she would have been held at the medical examiners office for a period of time due to a post mortem needing to be carried out to determine cause of death.
if the funeral home were instructed to embalm then im sure they did absolutely everything that they could for poor Lena. Unfortunately embalming cant reverse any decomposition that has already happened. Embalming doesnt even stop any more decomposition from happening. all it is able to do is slow that rate of decomposition down. then there are other things that us embalmers can try and do to return a more peaceful and life like look to the person that has passed. sometimes this is easy to achieve. other times it just isnt possible.
i wish we could work miracles and restore everyone to a peaceful look so their family can spend time with them and it simply looks like theyre asleep. but the truth is that sometimes it just isn't possible.
embalming is as much an art as it is a science. and the vast majority of us embalmers truly care, deeply, and want to help people and will break our backs and sacrifice aspects of our life in order to take care of those that we have been called upon to serve.
please dont let this one case/rendition of the case (which doesnt have any corresponding information-such as a report from the medical examiner, the receiving funeral home or the case analysis & embalming report of the deceased and her condition, as well as what work was carried out by the embalmer at the funeral home mortuary) make you view all of us within the profession in a negative light. i would confidently say that there is most likely information and reports regarding this aspect of the case that is not public knowledge/not available to the laymen which would explain why she was in such a condition.

Also i'm not "making excuses" either. I'm simply offering alternative possible situations seeing as we don't have all of the information that anyone would need to come to a definitive explanation. Another reason for my "making excuses" is because I work in the industry and know how these things work where as a lot of the people stating their opinions as if they're facts simply don't work in the profession and don't have all the information that they'd need to make such bold claims.

Funeral home was negligent and with a lil research I’m positive they allowed decomposition to happen to other BLACK victims after Lena’s murder. I like that Eleanor talks about the disparity between how cases with white victims vs black victims are treated very differently.
In the 90's my uncle was murdered, stabbed to death and left to die in an alley and it devastated his daughter. As my cousin grew up she desperately wanted to solve her fathers murder. It took alot to even get the police department to even reopen the case. Long story short the police department had a primary suspect and they never did anything because the case file just sat on someone's desk for nearly a decade, and she had to advocate for them to follow through in the suspect. It took nearly 20 years to get the guy but my cousin finally did it.

being from Boston, born and raised, Tufts is an amazing college, on the same level as Harvard Yale Dartmouth Brown Princeton Columbia UPenn and Cornell. Its on what we call the Hidden Ivys alongside Welesleyan, Northeastern, Suffolk, UConn, Stanford, USC, etc. She did good. and this entire case is just so so sad.
I just want to say thank you for how respectful yet interested you are in true crime- I recently unfollowed a few very, very popular creators in the true crime category; because I find it hard to listen when they’re not just focused on story telling , instead they try to be funny or gossipy. You are interesting yet always focus on the people affected and the severity of the situation. You are awesome!!
This is how I feel about Bailey Sarian. I recently unfollowed her because I just can't listen about people dying while she stops to do her makeup or jokes around or puts cringy catch phrases in the middle of a conversation. I don't know. Eleanor just does it correctly, as she should.
I love how happy Eleanor seems talking about people like Lena and how amazing they were when the were alive. It makes me that much more emotional in the end

I really appreciate how much time you take to talk about the lives of the victims instead of only talking about the crime! It shows us who they really were as a human and not only a victim.

I’m not even done with this episode yet and I just have to say I love how you speak about these cases. The amount of enthusiasm and care that you put into speaking about the victims is so wonderful. Every time I listen to one of these stories when you are describing the victim I always feel like I know the person. I feel like I’m hearing about a friend, and such beautiful soul, it just breaks my heart even more hearing what happened, because you just feel like you knew her 😫 I can’t believe this gorgeous, incredibly smart and sweet young woman was taken so soon. Our history is just completely filled with way too many incredible young women taken farrrr too soon 💔
It’s so intimidating when people hang out at your house. We for a bit had a bunch of teens just hanging on our flat building stairs and at some point someone buzzed them in (don’t just buzz anyone in make sure you know they are meant to be!) and they hung out in the hall and being on the ground floor it was RIGHT outside of our flat and it was scary!

It’s truly so sad what happened to her, I genuinely feel like if she was a white woman this would’ve been solved. As a black woman myself I truly fear being attacked and the police completely ignore my case simply because of my skin color. I really hope in the future the police gets better, because even though this happened 25 years ago, POC cases still get overlooked. I mean look at Gabby Petito case, yes what happened to her was sad and she deserved justice but she got wayyyy more media coverage than the POC that were missing for years. You did a really good job on this video btw !!!
