Thank you! I’m left eye dominate but a right handed shooter. I’ve basically trained myself exactly like you have. I draw back with both eyes open, close my left to get on target, then open my left eye back up.
Growing up, I was shooting bows right handed since those are the bows we had - though I’m naturally more left handed in things - as an adult I broke my left wrist in a motorcycle accident and even after healing it was very uncomfortable to shoot a compound RH - so I switched to LH and also focused on recurve/instinctive. Never shot so good in my life. Now I shoot both recurve/compound LH and so glad I made the switch.
Thanks for the tip - saves me from having to buy and try out a left hand bow. I did buy a piece that clips on to my glasses to block out my left eye; I just need to practice more keeping my left eye shut.
Finally. Something i do naturally and don’t have to change. Thanks for confirming I’m doing the correct thing to shoot right handed while left eye dominate.
Good video Thanks John - R handed, person , L eyed rifle shooter - new to archery - ( 3 yrs) - recurve bow - no sights - didn't want the visual problems of sights due to eyesight problems ( major astigmatisms both eyes due to keratoconus ) - chose to shoot rifle left handed and just followed suit with bow = left handed RATIONALE - if the non sighting eye is dominant and you blink during the shot cycle your brain acts quick enough to cause you to pull the shot towards where the dominant eye says it should be - so I think rifle or bow shoot from dominant eye side - sight with dominant eye + both eyes open - works best for me ( as a side note when I was a kid we made bows from sticks and a dowel for the arrows and I just picked the bow up in my right hand not knowing any better but it felt natural to me ) best regards from Australia
I am cross eye dominant. I learned to shoot riffle left handded. Did well in military competition. When i started bow hunting i never flinched and bought a left handed bow from the get go.
This helps a LOT. I am new to archery and am left eye dominant. However, my right elbow is jacked and I cannot hold the bow with tension to shoot left handed. I shoot firearms right handed but with both eyes open. This helps me know how to train my right eye. Thank you !
I removed my left lense of my shooting glasses and replaced it with a leather piece that fit perfect. So much better than closing the eye off completely.
I thought I just may be having a bit of torque in my grip, but this makes a lot a sense as well. I keep my left eye closed, but possibly not enough. I do run my fast eddie xl all the way out too, which can increase torque at a distance. I guess I will start by the process of elimination and find my isssue
Another technique I use is borrowed from how I shoot a shotgun. It’s especially helpful if you wear glasses. I put a small adhesive dot on my glasses (including sunglasses) in front of my cross dominant eye that is aligned to block the pins on my scope. It’s the same way I block the bead on my shotgun. I use this setup in both my target and hunting setup.
Wow this just saved me. I used to shoot trad recurve and i never noticed the cross dominant issue i guess i shot a bit more instinctively but I've recently gotten back into archery with a mate of mine and i bought a more modernised recurve with the whisker biscuit and sight and I've been noticing cross dominance was giving me major issues. I didn't even realise that's what was happening to my poor shot placement until my mate reminded me of my cross dominance i was moving my soght all around to weird places and changing the angle of my whisker biscuit and i tried sighting in with my left eye closed and i was aiming WAY off target from where i thought i was aiming. Honestly didn't know what i was going to do about it but i usually shoot with a bandana on my head to keep hair and sweat out of my way so i could easily flap a bit over my left eye and hopefully I'll see improvement finally!
I'm left dominate but right handed, never new that was a thing intel someone told me,I've been closing my left eye for so long I didn't know any difference. I'm so used to it it doesn't effect me.i do tend to shoot left everytime so now I will work in that.
Right handed left eye dominant. I feel just shooting left handed has really helped me. Easy to gain strength in an offhand and the strong hand does all the important work. Plus when I go to sell a left handed bow they sell super fast because of availability. Only downside is I never get to demo new bows before I buy them.
I grew up shooting right handed and am left eye dominant. Found out the easiest way is to squint my left eye just enough to force my right eye to take over. Over the years it’s worked itself out.
I am right handed left eye dominant. I shoot guns left handed but always shot my bows righty. It feels better to me pulling with my dominant hand. I also draw both eyes open and then close my left as I get into my peep.
I had a situation last year my first year hunting where I had the buck I had been chasing all season come in to 30ish yards. I'm left eye dominant but was shooting right. Was about 20min before shooting light was done. Drew back and looked through my peep and couldn't see him. Last time that happened. Bought a left hand bow a couple months ago and it's starting to feel natural and having way better grouping keeping both eyes open.
I am righthanded, but my left eye is far more dominant than my right... to the point where i begin seeing black splotches on my right eye when my left eye is closed. I am going to purchase a bow soon and i am thinking of just starting out left handed.
This is the exact problem I have n I'm wondering if I should shoot a left handed bow. I'm right handed left eye dominate n my aiming eye is also left. And a stigmatizim in my right eye. I'm totally new 2 shooting n haven't shot much.
So it’s okay for my wife to shoot right handed even though she’s left eye dominant as long as she completely has that left eye shut, we bought her a right handed bow and I have noticed when she gets tired mentally and physically those arrows started moving away from center and then it dawned on me it was her eye coming open on that left eye when she was tired and causing this shift. I asked her if she wanted to switch to a left handed bow but she’s kinda stubborn and I imagine she’s nervous to switch because of just confidence and the change from always shooting everything right handed. I told her that it’s up to her whether she wants to switch there’s no right or wrong way to go about it really just what she’s comfortable with.
everyone's different, been shooting right, with left eye dom, both eyes open for 10 years now.. still hitting my targets 100 yards out...no turning back now haha
So my daughter is getting into archery, is right hand dominant but left eye dominant... she's been shooting a left handed bow and doing well at 20yds, you think she should be using a right handed bow and train herself to shoot with her right eye?
Isn’t there another option? Learning how to shoot with the non-dominant hand? I’m right handed and left eye dominant and plan to learn how to shoot left handed. I’ve heard some pros had to relearn how to shoot with their opposite hand after decades of shooting one way. Is this not practical?
Im a lefty , was L eye dominant but have glaucoma an lost alot of vision in L eye so … developing my own technique of drawing straight back to nose , turning head to line up with right eye
Thank you for this. Left-eye dominant, RH here, been wondering why I am consistently 3 inches left at 20 yds, 6 inches left at 40 yds but dead on at 10 yds! I close my left but I'm still consistently left of target. Work in progress.
Is it preferable to learn shooting a lefthanded bow so I can keep both eyes open instead of closing the left one? Gonna get my first bow soon so thinking it's a good idea before learning to shoot at all even if it's gonna feel weird at first?
This is a good question. The owner of our archery shop recommended this to my wife but being so right-hand dominant she chose to stay with a right hand bow. I wonder which is best.
I'm right handed with a left dominant eye and I shoot left handed bows. While this is pretty easy with a recurve it was very difficult to learn to shoot a compound. Reason for this is that when you shoot a compound with a handheld release, it is quit difficult what you have to do with the fingers of your week hand when executing the shoot. It would be very nice if Dudley could answer the question what one should suggest to people with cross dominant eyes. Buy a bow that fits your eyes or buy a bow that fits your arms.
Right hander who is left eye dominant. Discovered this when I was rather young so I shoot a rifle and bow left-handed. I am a police officer so I have learned to shoot a pistol right-handed due to the coordination needed for drawing my weapon. I cross my left eye over for sight alignment. It's a rather weird sight the first time people see me shoot but it works for me.
Im right handed with a cross dominant eye. I started archery with a trad bow und started compound just recently. Back then i tried several trad bows in the shop, both left and right handed and could not tell what feels weirder after switching several times. I choose a left handed bow in the end just so i dont have to deal with the problems caused by being cross eye dominant. Shooting with a left handed bow feels completely normal for me now and im really glad i did it. Even being trad for most of my archery life, using a right handed bow of my friends makes me miss the target even when im shooting intuitively. i can overcome it by focusing, but for me it doesnt feel good to fight against, or trying to trick it. Its also an additional step i have to do in my draw cycle. I believe shooting compound without your brain interfering does help a lot, and like John said, not being able to open both eyes in low light situations is an disadvantage. hope that helps.
I am left eye dominant and right handed. I trained to shoot a left handed bow.

So happy to see this video.

Awesome video, I’m left eye dominant, I just became left handed when shooting a bow. Even tho I’m right handed
Cool, Josh. Nice job!
Great advice keep it coming. Nock on
Thanks, Ryan. Will do!
I am cross eye dominant. I learned to shoot riffle left handded. Did well in military competition. When i started bow hunting i never flinched and bought a left handed bow from the get go.
Nice, Richard!

Yes, if you wear glasses this is another viable option. Good luck!

Sorry... TLDR: i was shooting bad because of cross dominance issues will see if this works... yeah i know way simpler
I'm left dominate but right handed, never new that was a thing intel someone told me,I've been closing my left eye for so long I didn't know any difference. I'm so used to it it doesn't effect me.i do tend to shoot left everytime so now I will work in that.

Hi Mike, so glad you have found success! Keep it up!
I grew up shooting right handed and am left eye dominant. Found out the easiest way is to squint my left eye just enough to force my right eye to take over. Over the years it’s worked itself out.
Great. Glad you have found a process to make it work for you. NOCK ON!
I've been cross eye dominant all my life
So John himself is cross dominant ?? Great to know because I was gonna buy a left handed bow but I think il just train my right eye!
I’m lucky I’m left eye dominant and right handed. When I was ten and got my first real bow. That had me shoot lefty.
I am right handed left eye dominant. I shoot guns left handed but always shot my bows righty. It feels better to me pulling with my dominant hand. I also draw both eyes open and then close my left as I get into my peep.

That sounds like a situation that would definitely create a need for change. I am glad it has worked out for you!
or do the most reasonable thing and use the right bow.
A great help thanks again appreciate ya
Thank you, Raymond. Pumped to have you following along.
@@nockonarchery I’m honoured to be able to watch and follow the nockonarchery family forever fan✌️

I think that is a good call, Jarvis. Especially as you are just starting out. Good luck!

Same here man I feel ya 👍🏽
I don't seem to have a dominate eye. I have a LH bow atm and shoot it fine but I am just as good shooting a RH bow. Any advice?
Are you planning on going to TAC in 7 Springs, PA?
Yes, the team will be there! Hope to see you on the mountain!

I see two images when sun is low on horizon even with eye closed. Any thoughts?
I'm ambidextrous but when shooting my bow I'm forced to shoot left handed because I'm almost completely blind in my right eye

What's up with the illuminati hand sign front and center....

Thanks again, great advise. Does pse make a bow that when set at 65 pounds can shout up to a 100 yards and be fast enough to use for hunting.
Is it weird that I shoot my rifle left handed but everything else right?! I even shoot pool left handed. And I don’t know why! Lol
Same here
