A really good book on the vikings is Robert Furgusons "The hamme and the cross". That describes it as a religious conflict. For example, there is no british source describing them as "vikings" and there is only one or two sources calling them "northmen" but a great multitude of sources describing them as "pagans".

I live in Clondalkin south-west Dublin and the old round tower that was built in the 7th century still stands in great condition. It was plundered twice by the Vikings in the 9th century and every time I pass it I wonder what it must have been like for Clondalkin residents of the 9th century when the Vikings arrived. The residents of Clondalkin were deeply religious people they must have felt like the Vikings were an army straight from Hell.

Martin Andersson I don't care about any of that. I was just pondering the scene. How crazy it must have been. I wasn't passing judgement. No need to be defensive or to try and justify shit that happened a thousand years ago. Believe me, I'm no defender of Christianity. I'm sure what you say is true but I seriously doubt that was the motivation behind the raids. Unguarded loot and land was the driving factor behind the raids. The fact we were Christians was probably just a nice little bonus.

Google for "sildesalaten" and see the terrible union-flag Sweden wanted us to have.
We're NOT Swedish people and we got our independence because we had macineguns in 1905 when Sweden used the same fightingstyle as in teh American civil war.
The Norwegian had Hotchkiss macineguns from 1899 and we would kill all Swedens soliders before they could get close enogh to use their antique weapons.

@okieoiogh8235 All is a bit of a stretch there. Somerled is number 2 on the historical list with the most living descendants, but to say ALL irish people are descendants to the somerled and the Mcdonald line is a bit inaccurate. Dna testing shows only about 20% of Ireland's population carries Scandinavian dna.

My ancestors the last 200 years are almost exclusively from Western Norway. I have not found a single foreign ancestor in my genealogy studies. Much to my surprise, a DNA test says a little more than 20% of my DNA is from the British isles.
Either that test is way off, or there has been some serious traffic across the North Sea.

Lol, a couple of years ago the Spanish demanded that Danish quards or police should be stationed on a certain holiday location in the future, as the Danish youngsters terrorized the area, drinking theire brains out and scared the locals. Not really something to be proud of as a nation but a bit fun never the less.

Native Irishmen fought the Vikings constantly. There was no seamless Viking rule. They were good fighters but poor organizers. Hence all the kings and high kings. My people withstood the Viking invasion and maintained Irish rule in Limerick. Clan Huey and McDonough.

People hold onto blue eyes being a viking descent sign . DNA shows plenty of people of the viking times had Brown eyes and hair .yes there was blue eyes and blonde hair and red hair but the peoples back then we're not as fair haired in numbers as they are across scandanavia today. True you can be of Scandinavian descent and have blue eyes but you also can having brown . You can have blue eyes and have no Scandinavian heritage. Just like many Irish are of dark hair and eyes the majority in fact .
