In my experience, I cannot tell any effect on flavor removing it or leaving it on. The temperature at which the fire Burns at has the has the greatest effect on flavor in all of what we cook.

I cook with pecan and walnut shells... bark on and off... never tasted anything off.(BBQing since 95)
