Exploring Sompting Abbotts Prep School - Part One

- Sompting Abbotts Preparatory School is a historic West Sussex independent school in Sompting, near Worthing and Steyning. It sits in parkland of 30 acres, which includes woodland, chalk grassland slopes and a pond.
I am walking with headmaster, Stuart Douch, and Sarah Monaghan, journalist, around the exterior of the magnificent Victoria Gothic building to understand the school's history. In part two, we explore the inside of the building and climb the tower and access the rooftop.

Ex pupil, from pre prep to leaving in 1983. The storage room in the Tower had a pool table, which we used at break time. The bigger boys used to monopolise it though, so I didn't get to use it much. I was boarding in my last year and remember swimming in the unheated cold pool in the evening and the unplayable grass tennis court, probably not around now. Also on the wall opposite the kitchen, there were house charts, Romans, etruscans, Greeks, trojans. You got a black mark for bad work or behaviour and red mark for good. As house captain of trojans i wanted us to win the house prize, it seemed important back then. Brings back so many memories, mainly happy. The anger of the headmaster when thieves broke in stole the video player, listening to Billy Joel, uptown girl in the library, table tennis before 9am, my ear bleeding when an ice lolly shaped eraser was thrown at me, uneatable goulash for lunch. What a fantastic place - it reminds me of where I went to prep school (where I also lived as Dad taught there) although the architecture was neo-Jacobean rather than neo-gothic!
I think there must have been a lot of soil moved to make the ‘old building’s wall’ so low in the landscape!
Yes, I think there was some landscaping down and the soil was heaped up.

This was wonderful. Here in the USA, I have poked around in so many buildings on tours and I suggest others go who are history buffs. They never disappoint and cost very little to see - approx $10.

Hi James, it's the Pre-Prep and Science building called The Stables and part of it incorporates the original Coach House of Sompting Abbotts House.
