- From Sept. 15 through Oct. 15, Tiny Desk is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with an "El Tiny" takeover of the (home) concert series, featuring J Balvin, Camila Cabello and several more musicians from all corners of Latinidad.

A tattooed hand scrawls on a small school desk - "Jose by J Balvin" - followed by a signature smile. It's an intimate beginning for the príncipe del reggaetón, J Balvin himself, as he begins his "El Tiny" performance on a sunny barge in the middle of the East River. Backed by the Brooklyn Bridge, Balvin breezes through some of the best cuts off of his new album JOSE (Balvin's birth name). The first three - "Vestido," "Que Locura" and "OTRO FILI" - are moody and gentle popetón, creating expectations of familiar intimacy before he blows the performance wide open with the Tainy-produced, tempo-shifting album opener, "F40." And as the sun descends on the New York skyline, Balvin closes it out with a drop-laden extended mix of the jock-jam Skrillex collaboration, "In Da Getto."
To talk about modern Latin music is to talk about J Balvin. Over the course of the past 10 years, "the boy from Medellín" has risen from humble beginnings in Colombia to global superstardom, building an unprecedented fanbase at the intersection of pop, reggaetón, house and hip-hop, with over 18 billion views and 35 million record sales to prove it. He is the first Latino to headline Coachella and Lollapalooza, and there isn't a more fitting artist to kick off our month of "El Tiny" performances - Balvin is the epitome of cross-cultural success.
When a drone flies out during the last drop of "In Da Getto," and we finally see the true scope of the barge that Balvin has been performing on, it serves as a reminder that no matter how personal his songs may be, Balvin will always, always, be massive.

Who cares? Many tiny desk concerts are produced. The artist wants to present the best performance to their fans/audience. If you want simply acoustic there are plenty of those. I personally consider Tiny Desk (home) version is for me at home, but I'd love to be on that barge!

Desde que empezó la Pandemia los Tinys se volvieron HOME.. pero exacto.. literalmente pierde la esencia de un Tiny Desk Concert si le pone cada quien su Estilo.. cuando en realidad lo que disfrutábamos ver era el “Unplugged” de los Artistas

Long time Tiny Desker here. The people complaining about the spirit of Tiny Desk in this performance are clearly not musicians or producers. This performance is just as live as anything else out there and I don’t understand how you can draw these arbitrary lines in the sand by saying something like autotune doesn’t belong here… it’s an effect like MANY other effects used in tiny desk performances and I won’t even get into it because if you don’t understand then I am not responsible for educating you. This is LIVE. Things here can go wrong. These guys smashed it.
The difference is that this was heavily modified in post. All of the instrumentation with the exception of most of the drum parts and one keyboard are prerecorded. All backing vocals are heavily modified and prerecorded.
To say people who disagree “aren’t musicians” is comical… this performance is far from live and was obviously heavily modified.
Real in-person Tiny Desks don’t use vocal modifications or effects. Most artists play all instrumentals live in an acoustic format. The thing that makes Tiny Desk so great is the intimacy and rawness. Nothing about this performance is intimate or raw.
See: Anderson Paak, Jacob Collier, Coldplay, Dave Matthews, Juilliard Jazz, Mac Miller, etc.
The common theme? All of them are stripped down performances with instruments played by real, live musicians in formats that they do not usually perform in.
IDk if you speak spanish. But for us spanish speaking people, we know he is really good, but he could have done many times better. He winged it. Which is OK, but he I was hoping for more.
Huge J Balvin, and "Tiny Desk" fan here! But I have to agree with the majority of these comments. There was nothing "Tiny Desk" about this performance. I've seen Jose in concert, music videos, on TV, and in person and thought this would provide that signature "Tiny Desk" coziness and unmasked feel. It didn't. It's all good, misfires happen. Looking forward to the next one. Hopefully, they can bring it back to the style and setting that makes this series awesome and different.

@@DjTucci pues hay que tener en cuenta que los TD no van a a ser lo mismo hasta que vuelvan a dónde se hacían, teniendo en cuenta eso los artistas pueden manejar el formato que se les dé la gana, que eso puede estar a favor al artista si lo sabe aprovechar bien, si hace algo distinto (pongo como ejemplo el TD de Ty Dolla $ing que desde mi punto de vista es uno de los mejores y más originales) y también está el ejemplo de J Balvin que pues como lo dices literalmente es un videoclip de las canciones, no cambia nada. Me parece que él pudo aprovechar mejor la oportunidad al igual que el cover de Metallica pero no lo hizo, hay que tener en cuenta que no es mediocridad musical, es simplemente el formato del artista y es complicado pedirle a alguien que haga algo distinto cuando siempre hace el mismo tipo de formato en todos los performance.

What a shame; way over produced. Not even T-Pain, the king of auto-tune, used his signature sound during his performance at Tiny Desk. This is just musically lazy; there’s no excuse of not knowing how to make urban music sound well acoustically; tons of examples out there.
