  • Presented in a non-linear style, covering the period from 1500 to 2022 AD, in this film I use 10 Unique Historical sites of NEWBURY, ENGLAND to tell the stories of different periods in the Town's past... Including Newbury's involvement in The English Civil War in the 1600s, World War 2 in 1940s, to The Cold War in the 1980s!
Even if you live in the Newbury it is likely that you walk past these locations every day without knowing their full back stories.
Ever wondered how we got mobile telephones? Or what was the purpose of the concrete buildings you find along the Kennet and Avon canal? Or what happened to you in the 1500s in this town if you read from an English not Latin version of the Bible?........

wow! I have lived in Newbury for most my life, and I never knew most of this stuff. The one that shocked me the most was definitely the bombing, as I blindly walked past the plaque almost every day for two years, and never thought to look at it. Great video!

Lived in Newbury/thatcham best part of 30 years, this was an absolute tribute. So much history forgot or never mentioned all around us. Was hoping you were going to cover the mass graves from the black death on Bartholomew street only found about 15-20 years ago

Thanks!! I lived in Newbury during the 1960's. Many memories; fishing in the rivers Kennet and Lambourn, and that wonderful Mr. Gould who was so kind when we always brought his boats back late.

Mr Gould has a beautiful memorial dedicated to him next to the wonderful canal that he loved so much. The dedication sits on a part of secluded ground in the West Mills part of Newbury & from it you look across the canal & opposite it is the Lock Stock & Barrel pub, I think he would have approved?. Such a nice chap who did so much to bring the canal back to life.

Absolutely brilliant, thank you so much for posting. Newbury is my home town (live in nearby Pangbourne now) & as a history lover I thought I knew Newbury's history pretty well, how wrong can I be, I didn't know 7 out of the 10 facts about the town!!, how bad is that?. I have walked or driiven past all these monuments for most of my life & didn't know their true meaning & history. As my history teacher used to say "Cindy could do better"!!. Thanks again, much appreciated 10/10.

"Jack of Newbury" or John Winchcombe needs mentioning as he was important to Newbury, also the history of speenhamland system /pelican Inn etc etc. Newbury is rich with history there is so much tbh

I'm a new subscriber who has a B.A. in history living in Louisiana and I am really enjoying your videos. Like the examples of local lore having the mounds from the Civil War but actually much older as so much history is incorrect and it's great when it is corrected. Thumbs up!
