I love watching the progression down the bin until it is just a mass of worms underneath!! Thanks for the shoutout to us Florida Worm Farmers!! This is a great reminder to me to sprinkle in some water into my worm casting storage container!! Excellent video Ann!!🪱🪱🪱
I don't think it's ever clicked before when I watched all your other videos that your basement is unheated. I know you say it was cool/cold, but I didn't realize it didn't have heat. That new light is going to work wonders for your peppers! ~ Sandra
Always fun to watch when so, *SO* much new stuff gets loaded into the system. My supply of castings have just been sitting around in buckets without any check-ins. I might have to also do a quick conditioning of the stuff so that it can safely make it thru the winter 👍🏻
That 55 gal bin is so awesome !!! Think I will have to make one next time I stumble on a free barrel ( I have sooo many worms, have to do something with them ). I store my worm castings in a plastic garbage can with holes, or a grow bag, it is very important to keep stored castings moist and aerated to preserve the biology along with any worms that hatch out of cocoons. This is a big reason why home raised worm castings are more beneficial over store bought castings, the active biology. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving Ann ! Stay Well !!!!
Hi! Georgia here. RW here. Just started ENCs. I never thought about using cooked food like you did since they say no meat products. Interesting to see how you do your food. Thanks for sharing!
I don't put a whole bunch of meat in the bins anymore, but if it's just little bits like in soup I will still do it. If it seems like something that's going to have a bunch of spices or salt, I'll put it in a colander and rinse it before I can feed it to the worms. I don't really believe in the don't feed list. I think it's mostly related to stinking and attracting pest rather than the worms quote" don't like it. I feed tons of onions and peppers and no worms have been hurt. 👍🏼😃🪱
Love me some Blue! Big fan of the Barrina grow lights. Have 11 of the 4' and 8 of the 2' ones you mount yourself. Also use the 4" regular LED light ones in the garage for years with no issues.
Hi Ann, Always nice to watch you massage the worms 🪱 in blue 💙 I didn't realize your basements is unheat..except the ducts giving off heat. B-r-r❄️🥶❄️ Is your Mother-in-law coming down to Central Florida this winter? This has been a chilly November here in Windermere, Florida. I'm an hour east of Patrick and Autumn. Man, that's a feeding!!!! Take care ❤Peggy❤ PS. I just uploaded my Christmas tour if you're interested 🎅🎄🤶
Well glad the chocolate moruga pepper plant is still looking good. Shame it didn’t produce peppers by the end of your season. Hope it grows well next season for you. New light looks good. This year we had about 190-195 days (normally half a year about 180-185 days) between frosts, zone 7a in Delaware.
@ I seen one in your picture. Have you tried it? I had 2 plants this year one died and the other I got about 25-30 peppers off of. I like these because they are a larger pepper.
I would like to see how or what u do to your pepper to over winter. Iam in s tx our days still 70s but night playing 40-50s i do my tomatoes starts Jan 1and peppers but should would like to carrya few over so I don't have to start that many
Good to see Grandpa pepper is still thriving. I'm trying again to over winter mine. Many worm farmers pre-compost or innoculate the bedding so its available faster. Do you think paper\cardboard and liquid nitrogen source (urine?) would begin composting and become a safe bedding?
Hey Ann, I'm guessing you'll be storing most of those castings until Spring. Do you add any food or just let any worms in there re-process the castings? I usually add a little container with some food scraps (something like a grocery store berry container that has holes) so it's easy to pull out later. Cheers from Melbourne Australia!
Yes I do the same. Keep an eye on the moisture and put a pumpkin rind in there for the critters. I start some seeds in January so I will use that in my seeds starting mix 🪱😃👍🏼🍅🌶️🌱
I add water that has some sort of nutrients like sea weed or you can use molasses. About a teaspoon per gallon. If there are baby worms I try to trap them with a piece of melon or pumpkin.👍🏼😃🪱
This is a over 200-year-old house. The electric bill is already insane. My total energy bill is about $600 a month or more in the winter. It's really hard to tell if one little light is going to make a difference. 😃👍🏼🪱
Question, I notice you do not harvest much at the finished end...do you not show us for time sake or is it that you harvest a bit at a time? Thanks for the answer!! Love watching the process 😊
I harvest as much as is the right moisture to go through the sifter and doesn't contain worms. I always try and answer all the questions. Thank you for watching.👍🏼😃🪱
I have a question! I assume that there is meat in that chicken noodle soup that you gave your worms, I am also thinking about the sodium in the broth or the sodium that is added to the soup when cooked. Since you added this stuff to your worm bin, does that mean that sodium added to food that we cook won't hurt the worms? I always have plenty of leftovers in the refrigerator that I could love being able to give to my worms, but I was afraid that the meat would make my worm bin stink and that the sodium to the food added would kill my worms. What is your thoughts on this? Thank you
Tiny bits of meat won't cause a problem. You are right, a lot of meat will cause it to stink and attract pest. The tiny little threads of chicken that are in soup not a problem for the worms. If the leftovers seem to have a lot of salt, I will put them in a colander and rinse them before I feed them to the worms. 🪱😃👍🏼
Your finished castings look incredible! And thank you for the shout-out!
Us chili heads have to stick together 🪱👍🏼😃🌶️

Yes, it is just a cellar. 🪱😃👍🏼
Live long and prosper! I am so proud of your success and my boy Blu is one of your best projects🎉

Yep might have a look and see if they have water. I'm probably going to add a worm trap in soon, to try and catch some wisps. 😃🪱👍🏼
Free lamp. Awesome!! You can still free stuff. Al’s I think I see you wearing a northeast worm shirt. I bought one too. Have a blessed day
Good eye! Yes, that is my northeastworms.com t-shirt. 🪱😃👍🏼

Yes 100%. How exactly do those store-bought worm castings keep the biology alive. I think I'm going to call BS.🪱👍🏼😃
Love the Star Trek reference and Barrina, gotta get one😊
It's true I'm a nerd through and through.😃🪱🖖🏼

I hope it warms up for everyone down there. I'll go have a look at the video.👍🏼😃🪱
My red wigglers certainly think the English climate is perfect, especially in a damp old basement. Personally I wish I were somewhere warmer!
Yes tis the season where I start whining about winter too. Lol😭👍🏼🪱
Hey, New Jersey here. I have 4 bins, 2-red wigglers and 2-ANC’s. Great hobby and the house plants and garden love the benefits! 🪱🪱
Exactly I don't know what I did before.👍🏼🪱😃

It did. I put the picture at the end. I actually found the ripe pods while I was filming.🪱😃👍🏼🌶️

@GardeningwithBarchuckin no I have not tried them yet. I was going to give it another week to make sure it is 100% ripe. 👍🏼😃🌶️
Btw, Ann, did you see my video on the role of mite, springtail and roly poly poop? It turns out isopods do more than chew!

Many worm farmers pre-compost or innoculate the bedding so its available faster. Do you think paper\cardboard and liquid nitrogen source (urine?) would begin composting and become a safe bedding?
I think urine would work similarly to the liquid kelp I use.🪱😃👍🏼
Do you need to add water/ moisture in between feedings?
If you found it was dry yes. Winter is hard to keep up with our mid week check-ins here.👍🏼😃🪱
Hey Ann, I'm guessing you'll be storing most of those castings until Spring.

Another Great Video ! What type of food scrap / food do you put in the castings to keep the microbe population and the future new members fed ?
I add water that has some sort of nutrients like sea weed or you can use molasses. About a teaspoon per gallon. If there are baby worms I try to trap them with a piece of melon or pumpkin.👍🏼😃🪱
@@PlantObsessed Thanks for the info. I will be going through mine tonight or tomorrow.
Do u leave a light on all the time for your worm bins
No, I turn them off after a few hours after I work on the bins. Just to make sure everyone knows which way is up. 🪱😃👍🏼
@@PlantObsessed ok thank very much
Let us know if your electric goes up a lot because of the lights, my husband has a lot of plant lights in the basement.

Would an aquarium heater make enough heat for African night crawlers? I use one in the water reservoir for my quail.
I don't know if that would work in kind of a dry media or not. If you ever use it, let me know. 🪱😃👍🏼
