    ok i tackled this job today on my 1998 ml and once again your thorough videos has saved me money thanks for that but i did have a few problems first off the rubber boot on top came off holy crap for a few moments the panic set in but a set of locking forceps and several tense minutes because of the lack of room i managed to get it squished over the partially started bolt hope it will stay in place in the long run fingers crossed .also i had one hell of a time getting the bolt started and i was also nervous about stripping the damn thing but with some fiddling and my electric ratchet i got it to bite thank goodness and finally and these are not in order of progression lol using my digital caliper both the drivers side and passenger side were at different measurements one was 33mm and the other 37 mm your video said 35mm was stock height so cranked both to that and all seems well truck does seem to ride a lot nicer just wanted to mention these issues i personally ran into maybe save someone else some aggravation

    SuperPro makes a polyurethane replacement that works a lot better than factory plastic bushing. Thank you for the video! Just got an ML55 that needs this!

    Dude your videos are awesome, you just clarify a doubt I had. Keep it up. I've done a lot of things to my ML320 by watching your videos. My rear left door lock mechanism is failing now, sounds like a machine gun when is up and I press the lock button. Please make a video about it, thanks.

    • @fupabox
      @fupabox  7 років тому

      does it lock eventually ? I mean, it makes the machine gun sound then eventually locks , but doesn't make the sound when opening ?

    Nice video. It's good to see the little issues to watch out for.
    But, about adjusting the torsion bars: Adjusting them WILL change the ride height -- it will NOT change how "soft" the ride is. This might be easier to understand with a typical coil spring. If you add (or remove, if you could) a shim from the top of a coil spring, you change the ride height, but you still have exactly the same spring. You haven't changed the stiffness of the spring, so you haven't changed the stiffness of the ride. Changing the adjustment of the torsion bar accomplishes exactly the same thing as changing shim thickness at the top of a coil spring. It changes the position of the "fixed" end of the spring, but it doesn't change the spring stiffness.
    NOTES: For the above, I'm assuming any adjustment is moderate. Obviously if you make a big adjustment and the suspension hits the up-stop or down-stop the "softness" will change drastically. Second, for the really nit-picky (like me), adjusting the ride height will change the suspension geometry slightly. This geometry change probably will change the effective spring rate ever so slightly. But the change in ride softness would be significantly less than that felt by the addition of a passenger to the vehicle.

      actually you can adjust around 2 inches or more, so there will be enough preload at the lowest setting to make it a bit firmer, I doubt it would be a lot though

    • @andrewsnow7386
      @andrewsnow7386 7 років тому

      2 inches sounds about right. I ran mine up about an inch (from factory setting) to gain ground clearance. And I suspect one could adjust down from factory by about that much too (without riding on the bump stops).
      I'm not sure what you mean by "enough preload". As long as you don't adjust the suspension far enough to hit a bump stop, then the only preload on the torsion bar is the weight of the vehicle (which obviously doesn't change with torsion bar adjustment).

    • @fupabox
      @fupabox  7 років тому

      The preload I was referring to is on the adjuster bolt.. you can unwind it to the point where I think it would rattle

  • @MegaTimc1

    I just want to have something clarified.
    If I loosen the bolt, the ride height increases and the front end becomes softer. If I tighten the bolt the ride height becomes lower and the ride quality becomes stiffer. Is that correct?

    • @fupabox
      @fupabox  4 роки тому +1

      turn the bolt clockwise to raise the front softer ride . counterclockwise to lower ,stiffen the ride ...

    • @MegaTimc1
      @MegaTimc1 4 роки тому

      Thank you so much. I raised my front end and I honestly can't believe the difference! I live in Pennsylvania and our roads are an embarrassment. I was feeling every nook and cranny of the road. And some potholes, even little ones felt like I was crashing into them. This quick easy adjustment has made a world of difference. As an owner of 2 older Mercedes Benz vehicles, I watch your videos for guidance often. Thank you again.

    I did this same exact method,because my tire on my passenger side was leaning , It was like the Big Bolt wasn't catching ,,The Mechanic even put one of those things to hold the tire up ,while in the air ,, they still tried to screw in the bolt and remove the thing that was holding the tire .. and the Bolt was hanging,,, It won't hold or catch for some reason,,PLEASE HELP ME

    • @fupabox
      @fupabox  4 роки тому +1

      It's hard to explain , but the nut that big bolt screws into ..it sort of swivels and needs to be lined up exactly or the bolt won't go in . The other possibility is that that part is broken . It is called a torsion bar anchor end . #16 in the diagram link .www.mbpartsworld.com/v-2001-mercedes-benz-ml320--base--3-2l-v6-gas/front-suspension--front-suspension

    Can please explain exactly how did marked your lines?

    I have a 2001 ML320 and there is clicking noise under the car when I turn the steering wheel sharply to the left or right. The noise only happened at the end of the full clock. If I change the bushing, will the noise go away? Thank you.

    • @fupabox
      @fupabox  7 років тому

      likely it is the front driveshaft cv joints...if you can feel it in the steering wheel when the click happens it is likely the cv joints.. if you can't feel it in the steering it could be the bushing

      Thank you so much for your response. I have another question. My 2001 ML320, in a sudden, made a lot of noise like something was falling under the rear of the car and it braked itself without me pressing the brake pedal for a few seconds then it went on again. Thank you again.

    • @fupabox

      yes I put a little adhesive to prevent vibration and keep them in place while installing ...it is just a very light adhesive , nothing strong. ....the grease was just synthetic bearing grease

    Would this cause bad tire wear on the inside of the tires?All the suspension parts are tight and seem good but my tires are wearing out on the inside bad !!!

    • @fupabox
      @fupabox  7 років тому

      either the lower ball joints on the front , or alignment needed, or the front torsion bars are adjusted too loose and lowering the front enough to allow the wheels to ride more on the inner tire.. does your front feel too spongy over bumps ?

      The actuator in that door is not turning..it is only a small electric motor inside the actuator that needs cleaning with electrical contact cleaner , then lightly lubricated with dielectric grease..the unfortunate thing is that the door panel needs to come off ,the airbag rivets drilled out , outside door handle removed and then the actuator taken out..once it is out ,the repair takes about 5 minutes. I have fixed a few , but the only one I filmed was deleted when I formatted the wrong video card.

      @@fupabox ok let get it straight, if you raise the car, became softer right? My car is kind low and very stiff, I dont like it, I'm trying to make it softer

    • @fupabox
      @fupabox  5 років тому +4

      It's a bit odd the way the ML front suspension works. Lowering makes the torsion bar softer , but the front shocks are very very short travel and end up riding harder , raising gives longer suspension travel, slightly firmer ride . but smoother if that makes sense. The best place to start is with a measurement of 35-40 mm and increase until it rides to your preference . Don't raise too far or you can actually get the front riding higher than the rear . From the side and about 20 feet away you can see when the truck is level front to rear. If the front is too low compared to the rear it can also cause a hard ride because of the angle the front wheels hit bumps . Too low at the front, a bump tries to force the wheel rearward before it can move upward which causes harshness.
