Also another rule of thumb is that if you aren’t in Preview you can just Zoom in. A close up of a Vector image (without gradients) has smooth edges and can be zoomed in on many times and still holds its sharpness.
A Raster image will start to look blocky, with edges looking like steps as you zoom in.
Vector images are infinitely scalable. Raster images aren’t.
Also, it’s not unusual to use a floating (no background) Raster image on a Vector background if you are doing Packaging with a Product Raster Image on the top layer. In this instance, the use of Vector & Raster work together. No need to create everything in Photoshop OR InDesign.
Illustrator is the main layout program that all Designers should master first…followed by…or at the same time, Photoshop. Master those two and you can create anything, for fun or as a career.
    You’re welcome 👍😉

True - you will start to see the individual pixels and the raster image will start looking 'blurry'!

Hi Anne, thanks so much for the tutorial. Very much appreciate the helpful information. I have a question. I have an AI file of a campground map. It contains mainly vector files, but in preview mode reveals that all of the map's trees and the bear in the main logo are raster artwork. (ie: Objects that have a box with an X as per your video). However, neither the trees nor the bear are raster images. The bear was image traced. But is nonetheless a vector as I understand it. The trees were made using the pen tool. Magnified at 64000% - which is as high as the magnification on my computer goes - the bear and trees are perfect vector images. Any idea why they show up as raster images in preview mode?? Also would a combination of raster and vector files create problems when printing the map? I saved the map as a PDF, flattened the file and then sent it to the printers. Now there are colour issues. I wondered if this was the problem?? Thanks in advance for any help! ps: Love the vids, your tone, voice, patience ... excellent :)

It sounds like the boxes are actually symbols, you’ll probably want to expand them before saving as PDF (although, keep an unexpanded version too-symbols are pretty great to have!) I don’t think they would interfere with colors, though. Thank you so much for your kind words about my videos 😊❤!!
