  • An unloved, untuned piano was sampled note by note. These individual notes were reassembled as a software sampler using Csound and Cabbage and used to create a performance of Frédéric Chopin's Étude Op. 10, No. 12, 'Revolutionary' Étude.
No notes were even vaguely in tune, some notes played what resembled chords and some notes were missing strings entirely so just produced a click as the hammer hit the piano casing. Key releases also produced a variety of unintended rattles and knocks so were sampled too. Many notes would stick so that they would only release if pulled back manually. The sound board of the piano has several cracks in it, explaining the dire tuning and lack of sustain. Given this, it is unlikely that the piano can ever be tuned again.
The music was played back using MIDI and Reaper. Even if I could have played the piece, the piano would have been mechanically incapable of doing so.
