As an artist, having a brand is like being able to stand out from the rest, but getting too attached to it really limits our creativity just for the sake of pleasing our audience. I have been through this so much that I couldn't share my other artworks anymore because of the fear of losing followers, or having a lower Like-ratio to my posts. However, lately I have somewhat solved this problem by opening a paid platform where followers who wish to see more of my art can pledge a monthly subscription, and there I can share the works that I am not what I'm usually known to create. Thank you for this video Toniko, I never thought having a brand can either be this beneficial, or very toxic for an artist's growth.
Yeah, i got surprisingly personal angry comments whenever i stop doing cartoony cute character. Never bothered me, still i never intended to be my "brand" and still to this day i get more traction whenever i do cute cartoon character.
Yeah that's not the kind of audnce you want... Mine just dislike and unsub for a few months or just wait patatly for me to go back to the conetnt they like... Still a balnce is best as atleast you have an audnce something most people on this platform never get.
@@deveneleven400 You only say that because you don't know what it's like to have a good father. My two half siblings went through a divorce, the older one knew what it was like to have a bad father, the younger one never knew what it was like to have a father. Years later my mom married again and had me, and I grew up with a good father. While they're still good people and I love them... They never amounted to much, and both have a plethora of mental issues stemming from their father or lack thereof. Something I'm grateful I never had to deal with. The younger one is like you, believing that not having a dad made them better... It didn't, they only say that and we only play along because we know the alternative is to admit they got screwed out of a better life then they could've had.
The thing is, as an artist, your content will never go away. People can always go back and watch that. It's always there. You don't have to make more. But people have a reason for watching someone. It's a good thing to know why people are leaving, but if you're confident just keep pressing forward. You aren't owed good/bad/any attention.
As one of the audience I really don't understand people who unfollow artist due to a change of artstyle ect maybe it's just me but I feel quite an attachment to the said artist that I follow and just go with whatever they want The only time I'll unfollow someone is due to NFTs and other personal beliefs (like if the said artist did some shady stuff then yes that can turn me off from following them)
I think NFTs are not that bad and people need to be more philosophically educated before they have the right to an opinion. And if you haven't, I reccommend to you watch some if not all of Uniquenamosaurus's NFT video.
I never realized how troublesome it could be to sort of have your art branded and yet, how, in a way, it can sometimes be inevitable... It is good to keep it in mind though, in order to try to have a balance between artistic freedom, which might some times dive away from that identity and image people have and what they expect, and at the same time comply with such expectations while being satisfied with one's own work... It's an interesting and at the same time scary topic so thank you for always sharing your knowledge and experience! I hope we'll get to see your storytelling side a little more often in the near future as well ^^
It maybe overrated but building an IP is important if you are planning to build a brand. Versus just trying to always work for someone. But the best thing for an artist is to do is to have a business mindset versus some rando artist. Because you can then hire people and expand upon your ideas to hit those dreams you really want to. Some people just want to do art and that is it. Some want to create and IP that has an entire universe of stories for film, animation, comics, etc. For me the goal is always trying to figure out how to create a success company that has a noticeable brand. Most artist don;t have lofty goals of own a disney level or type of business. So for those people is can be overrated. But I am one of those lofty goals is to create something like a disney type company. I may not hit that but achieving anything close would be great.
I relate with this alot. Im trying to create my own image online but it's been difficult recently. One animation i made got popular quickly but it's not the type I'd want make all the time. Plus the thought of people thinking im only one of "them type of furries" bothers me. But for now im just going with whatever i want to make and people are gonna have to deal with it.
I DEFINITELY agree with the points made here. Some people make art thats of short quick to make funny gags, some people make timely detailed illustrations, and do so with different goals and personal beliefs about their art. Which affects how they take their art journey, whether to be a brand and make merch, or do their own thing and make stories, or have art as a main job or a side hustle. Theres just so many ways to go with art! Personally I understand the struggle between brand and personal in a way. Like at least for me, I have had super slow growth in social media numbers and have done fanart in a style I know isn't exactly sought for in my lil fandom niche. And a part of me knows at least said fanart gets attention, and in the fandom, people love certain characters and styles and merchandise art.....Naturally, compared to like, my original characters and stories, which I've been feeling more and more called to and develop. Like I feel in my heart I dont want to be known as just "the artist who makes this fanart in watercolor", or have the heart for fandom merch making...But feel a lil scared bc then I would "be irrevelant" to my audience and peers I've made shared interest relationships with? Idk its hard, esp since I genuinely still like making fanart, just not in that way. But it seems as my main art peers (who are online and do fandom art and merch) do things a certain ways, like as if I should be doing as they do. Also the fact that I WANT my art to be my main source of income one day, but have a lot of figuring out and doing to do. The balance of being an art business but also not being someone who sees art as something to put on a product...But perhaps i should make a change,, given that my online following has been slow growing,, and i dont draw whats popular anyway XD Its neat to see other people's perspective on this and the sense of self and art as in many other videos, its not really acknowledged that artists have different circumstances, philosophies of art and self, and goals and dreams.
From the work you have shared on youtube and other social media, your art style looks super recognizable. I wonder if I could tell if you made something very experiemental that it was you. As long as you are drawing people or animals animation, I think I could recognise it.
You can always expand your brand like I'm a a UA-camr, Author, Pixel artest, TT and video game dev and Music writer... And I plan on expanding into more stuff in the future... Now if you wanted to freelance on like fiver that is another thing entirly and you'll only want a brand on the side or risk not getting hired as who will hire a brand to make art for their game is it clashes with it and the other art already in it?

How can an adunce know you for short films if you have yet to put any on UA-cam? And what's wrong with being the turtorial guy the guy most of your 200K subs on on board for? And way can you do both? Like my core conetnt on UA-cam is Shooter,Stratgety, Vehicle games and I always return to them or just have a massive back log of them. I've been working on branding my original series through comics, promotional posters, items and clothing for over a decade. And after not receiving a large following or having loyalists who keep on returning every month to demand for my story, I've reached my burnt out limit. I'm done, I'm throwing in the towel, I quit! However, before I do, I wish to work on an animation project that will show the world what my series could've been about. This final project will be known as project "New Era G" aka "Project Genki Dama." Why call it that? Because an animation project takes a long time to make (just like a spirit bomb.) Hence "Genki Dama." I planned to come out with this project within 2.5 years, however, this is if I was working on the animation "FULL TIME!" I now have a full time job that I'm doing just to pay the bills. So with all that, I now calculate that the time frame is now doubled. So 5 yrs instead of 2.5. But this will be a marathon not a sprint so I'm in it for the long haul. This will be my final swan song to the world.
