    The Lamy Safari and the Lamy ABC are beginner fountain pens for children (6 year olds) in Germany because you have to learn how to write with them and nothing else. My Safari lastet 10+ school years and is indestructible. You can wreck it under water to clean and smash it around with other pens and it will not leak. The nib will not bend because it is designed to withstand klutzy children fingers :) As for the ink: most teachers only allow blue ink in the first few years so a blue cartridge would make sense.

  • @FirstFlyte
    @FirstFlyte 7 років тому +10

    Regarding the LAMY logo facing up or down while writing, I have discovered with the safari's I have that when screwing the barrel into the section, if you start with the logo facing down (give or take a few degrees - I wait until I hear the click of the threads), the LAMY logo will always face up once the barrel is screwed into the section.
    The exact opposite is true for the LAMY AL-star and LAMY Lx. If you start with the logo facing up on these pens, it will always screw into the section and end up with the logo facing up.
    YMMV - I have two safaris, two AL-stars, and two Lx's.

    I got my Petrol today. I really like the color and the finish. I got it in Medium which I think was a mistake as I am so used to my Pilot Metropolitan in Fine. I see myself getting an EF nib really soon. I loaded it with Noodler's 54th Mass and have a box of Petrol ink which I will keep in my bag for backup.

    • @FigbootonPens

      54th Mass is one of my favorite inks...looking forward to playing with the petrol ink once the bottles are available in the US.

    I have one of the pens and i like the Colour , i also managed to get hold of the ink ,being in the UK I preordered it and it's a nice colour. I think Lamy got this right again this year and i can see this being extremely popular including the ink.
    Thanks David for the review , i always appreciate your reviews which are always excellent.

    Always fun to hear mention of the Fountain Pen Hospital. I've dealt with them for years (online orders) and finally had the chance to drop in in person this past March. I warn your readers that it's a very dangerous place. I walked in with a list of pens to try in hand, meaning to come out with one -- but ended up with two and longing after a few more...

    I like that color also. I am personally more a fan of the Al-Star. I have a number of expensive pens in my collection but honestly, I have found Lamy pens are more consistent writers than all but my Pelikan m-800. Some people complain about the proprietary cartridge converter but I actually like the "lock-in" feature.

    The Petrol pen is a nice colour. For the ink, I feel it s just to dark if using an EF nib. I added water to the ink which did help to improve the colour. I'll try the Sailor Yama-Dori teal ink to see the difference. Nice review.

    I believe the reason the put a blue ink catrage is because they test every pen before it leaves the factory and they use blue ink. So the pen already has blue ink in it.

    The Akkerman looks like the Lamy Petrol Ink. The Lamy Safari Petrol Color is very close to the Lamy Petrol Ink. I was surprised how close, so people like this color will like the ink too.
    Greatings from Germany. (Petrol-Ink Cartridges here avialable, Ink-bottles still not yet) - I think Lamy target not specific Collectors or Fountain-Pen-People ... so parents buy their kids a pen would believe this writes for school blue and not petrol. To avoid parents get annoyed to buy extra blue-Cartridiges for the kids school. In some countrys kids in school only allowed to write blue.
    In Germany you can buy a Lamy Safari in most paper-stores, and some have still Safari's or al-stars specials from 3-4 years ago.

    Regardless that the Safari was designed and intended for beginners, for me it is a workhorse pen. I like it's unique design, which reminds me of Bauhaus although Lamy calls it avant-garde. I still have my first Safari that I picked up in the early 1980s and although it is scratched and the black is completely worn off the clip, it writes well. After using the Safari and Al-Star for 40 years, it is still my favorite pen, even over the far more expensive ones I have owned. The steel nibs are reliable and allow me to write quickly when journaling.

    The one I bought had a black medium nib on it.
    I sold the pen after I put a fine nib on it.
    I kept the black medium nib and I have put it on to a Wing Sung 3008 piston fill demonstrater pen. Writes very well and looks stealthy.

    great review, I should say another great review. thank you. I should get another lamy. I've tried and sold two lamy 2000 from/on ebay. The ef wasn't to my liking and medium was finicky, I couldn't find the sweet spot consistently. I've always loved safaris and my al star, not to mention head over heels for my studio with two tone nib.

    Additionally, the black ring on the Al-Star is thicker than the ring found on Safari. If you want to use a Safari body with an Al-Star cap, you can remove the ring from a metal capped LAMY Joy and put it on the Safari since the ring on Al-Star can’t be removed.

    I found one in a brick and mortar store in Mexico (in march 2018). I got that and my girlfriend got me the rollerball to have the set. Also, I find that the Noodler's Squeteague fits the colour of the pen nicely .

    +Figboot on Pens I had a tiny question regarding this pen that I wasn't sure to be able to get out of this video. Is the finish of this pen "matt" like with the black (charcoal) safari? There was a black (pianoish finish black shiny safari, and then a matt finished one)./ I have the matt finish and really like the matt safaries and really don't like the non-matt safari. Like for example I bought the Neon Coral Lamy Safari a while back and I don't like it because the finish seems to look very worn very quickly as compared to that black charcoal lamy safari, It was one of my first pens and I'm still using it today as my most trusted "works in any scenario" pen. I use it everyday. I want something like that. I really like the petrol color since I'm a chemist and Petrol is quite useful. If not, I was wondering between that dark lilac lamy safari which I think is in matt too? Do you know anything about the lamy CP1? That might be my guy if all else fails.
    My comment is badly written and I'm so sorry about that!
    Thanks!

    • @FigbootonPens
      @FigbootonPens  7 років тому +2

      No problems. Yes, the petrol is a matte, pebbled finish rather than some of the other Safari's which have a slicker finish. Sorry...unfortunately, I haven't had the opportunity to play with a CP1 in person. I've checked them out online, but they are a bit thinner than I prefer.

    i had a lamy safari back when i was in school in the 1980s. White one. Looked identical but interestingly, you could disassemble the hood, the cross-masked end (4:42) could be unscrewed with a coin (hence e the shape). Was made of metal if i remember correctly. Didn't serve much purpose as the clip is virtually indestructible and not available as a spare part. But it kept me amused when i got bored in class...
    Can't do this on my modern Safari pen.. still a design that's near perfect.

    • @FigbootonPens
      @FigbootonPens  7 років тому +3

      Well, some Safari's have a smoother texture, as opposed to the pebbled finish on this specific model, but the main difference is the new color...and the limited quantity. The petrol version will sell out (I predict, rather quickly), and no longer be available.

  • @Archergrl5

    Figboot on Pens fyi Lamy tests every pen with the Lamy blue ink (so it had some residue in the pen) so my guess is that's why they include that color cartridge

  • @andreasvesaliuz3501
    @andreasvesaliuz3501 7 років тому

    I can't wait to see this (and the Al Star pacific blue) on my pen retailer.
    I think I know why they always provide the blue cartridge: is because QC uses blue ink when test some of the pens.

    • @terrielemaire5884
      @terrielemaire5884 7 років тому

      Andreas Vesaliuz I've also heard that many European elementary schools teach children to write with fountain pens and teachers require the students to use blue ink up until a certain grade. Since the Lamy Safari is considered an entry level pen it would make sense that it would come with a school approved ink colour.

    Received my Petrol today and attempted to ink it. After 8 cycles of the converter and multiple efforts to make sure it was seated properly, I settled for 2/3 of a load of ink. Yikes, what could be so wrong with the converter? I find the pen to be just a common inexpensive FP. For a few $$ more I am sure there is a metal barrel and a descent converter somewhere on the marketplace.

Yes that could be said of a few other pens of course. Im by no means saying the Lamy pens or the pen folks who use them are less people its just not a pen that appeals that much to me mainly because of the section shape which many pen folks love. Ive got the lilac model and its a good writer it just doesn't make me tingle. Exactly why, I dont particularly know.
