Metafields make it possible to store additional information for articles, blogs, collections, customers, orders, pages, products and other important objects in Shopify.

For the longest time, metafields could only be added by using apps such as metefields guru. Now we find a new native metafield editor directly in our Shopify Admin dashboard.
The new theme editor lets merchants add new meta fields and properties without APIs or any form of coding. This gives you much more flexibility when it comes to your store’s content. Shopify users are now free to add the content they want to their product pages.
Alongside the Online Store 2.0 updates, Shopify also introduced new metafield filters. You can apply these Liquid filters in order to output metafield information in a standard format.

Hey Jan, great video - thanks. Question - maybe for another video... How do you handle large amounts of meta field data and metafield localization (like care instructions). There are some bulk editors in the app store but most of them are not of much use, as the reference fields are some cryptic GIDs and therefor basically incomprehensible in itself and not usable for mapping to exisiting as well...

Hello. I recently came across your channel, and im very thankful for you!
The new 2.0 facceted filtering system removes tags completely, so what i wanted to know if we could add filter by metafileds in the big shop filter system? In my case this would be the easiest and fastest way to filter through products.
Also i would love to see a video on this new filtering system since its changing the whole game

Unfortunately, using Shopify‘s integrated filtering does not yet allow defining filtering by metafields. Heard rumors that Shopify will introduce such capabilities as well. Do you have any ideas / info when this will be available?

Hi Jan, I am very much new to all of this and not a Developer by any means however, I'm learning with your help. My question is regarding attributes. Say for instance the different attributes that Facebook or Ebay require, Can Metafields be used to accomplish this for XML & CSV? Can there be say fb_product_category as a metafield that FB would recognize in the feed? Currently shopify doesn't have entries for quite a few FB required attributes. You can do either from the dashboard by going to Shopify discounts -> Automatic discounts
The downside of this option is that you can only do a quantity discount for one product at a time
If it isn't enough you can use a third-party app like:

Hello. Your videos are super helpful! I have a couple questions, though. We had a developer build some custom sections for us for use on the product page template. Most of his custom sections do not have the option to use a dynamic data source. For example, he created a section with a full width image. I would like to add a metafield to feed in this image depending on the product. However, I do not have the option to use a dynamic data source in that section. Why is that? Or, how do I go about telling the section to use a dynamic data source? I know we do have shopify 2.0 because other sections do have the option to choose a dynamic data source. Just some of the ones the developer created do not. Thanks so much for any help you can provide!

After you adding custom field to a product, is it available to retrieve via Shopify Admin API? For me custom field I added cannot visible in the admin product api. Any specific change we need to do to access via Admin API?

I'm so close but I cannot figure this out! Trying to create a metafield that contains a collection name, then to display it on the product page as a 'link' or I guess collection reference? is that the correct lingo?

To have the link of the collections that the product belongs to, you don't need metafields
You can use the collection object:
{% for collection in product.collections %}
{{ collection.title }}
{% endfor %}
then from the title you can show the link.

I wonder if this is possible if you have a rich-text editor in the customizer settings and would need to test it myself first. Through code-rendering it would definitely be possible

I think what you're looking is a step by step "product configurator". (Could also be a quiz based)
There are some apps that help with that.
They're not always 100% perfect but quite cost effective compared to building something like that from scratch.

I am new to shopify and am on the starter plan so I have very limited choices. Is there a way to use metaobjects to add fields to my product pages that I can then use to add sorting to my storefront? I would like to be able to sort by a store category and primary color. I don't have the ability to establish collections.
Amazing! Thank you so much for doing this video. You are an amazing teacher because you explain things in a way that is easy to follow and understand. I am struggling with trying to get a metafield to render HTML on the front end. When I choose the text (multi-line) for the metafield type I can type text but I can't type in any HTML. Shopify told me that I needed to choose the JSON option which just gave me a JSON code box that didn't let me type HTML code. I am sure with Shopify it is way too much to ask that a metafield give you a WYSIWYG editor but is it possible to have it render HTML?

@@nishmamaskey1093 Hello - yes! Apparently, it only works on the SINGLE LINE text option (WHY? no clue). A wonderful UA-cam member named Bloom Lifestyle figured it out and shared it on a video I had uploaded to show Shopify what the issue was. Even Shopify couldn't sort it out so BRAVO to BLOOM!!!

Thanks in advance if you can shed some light. We sell car styling kits, hundreds of products but there’re only few styles and colours, while for many different car models.
Is there a feature within shopify, or an app will let us create individual modules of product description, such as modules for each style description; modules for each colour description; modules for each car models. So we can pre-create all those modules and store in the system. When compose description for a product, we can just select its relevant style module; colour module; and compatible car model module, instead of have to repeatedly write up description for each product. Maybe it’s like metafield with pre-filled contents, not under each product, but store in the system and available for each product to select and utilise.

Hi Jan - How do you add the files section for metafields using the dynamic source in Shopify theme if the file metafields is not showing up in the theme editor? Hi Jan thanks for this video. really helpfull! my only question is how todo unique meta fields for variants inside a product. Currently the meta field wont change when a variant is selected. Example if we sell two types of granolas and they have different ingredients.
How to use metafield to make options? When you click on those options, you will be directed to another product page. And when a product option is out of stock, the option turn into gray. Is this possible? Can you make a video, please? This can be use when I want to collect similar earphones in an earphone product page.

Is there a possibility to add the "multi" color in color metafield. Since there is no hex code for bunt, it shows invalid color. Is it somehow possible to edit the code to do it. I want to use metafields for filtering of colors, not able to do it for transparent and multi colored products sadly.
