    As an athletic trainer Pat hit the nail on the head with baseline testing. It is a great tool that we try to utilize, but we find that athletes try harder on these tests after being concussed than when they were doing the baseline so sometimes the scores look better after. That's why it isn't the end all be all of determining health. It is an awesome tool when the athlete took the baseline very seriously.

    • @kineticfeduciarycommunicat1158
      @kineticfeduciarycommunicat1158 9 місяців тому +1

      Now all the player know how to jink the baseline test. Its like me and all my stoner buddies know how to pass a piss test and we all talk about the best methods or whatever.

    • @matthewburwell5648
      @matthewburwell5648 9 місяців тому +1

      @kineticfeduciarycommunicat1158 no because we don't clear based solely on the test. It's a single tool in the tool belt. We have many measures that are used

    • @Riley_Mundt
      @Riley_Mundt 9 місяців тому

      I experienced the inverse of this in high school. As players we never took the baseline test, but when they sent us to Houston Methodist to be cleared by a doctor, they had us take the baseline. I guess they based my results off of some average score, because I failed the first time and had to go back a week later.

    • @matthewburwell5648
      @matthewburwell5648 9 місяців тому +1

      @Riley_Mundt yes, most baseline tests automatically are averaged together into categories based on age range, sex, and maybe sport and then if no baseline has been completed on an athlete they can be compared to the average baseline for that age and sex. It is not as accurate as a properly done individual baseline.

    I never played real football… but played hockey and baseball until I was about 30… also was a very low level “pro” snowboarder. I won local comps and had local companies and Big Sky resort sponsor me for snowboarding. What I’m trying to get at is all my concussions (mostly from hockey and snowboarding) have me kinda messed up now that I’m pushing 40 years old.
    I also fell off a roof a few years ago onto the back of my head on the sidewalk and that one had me in pretty serious condition for a few days and I wasn’t straight for a few months from that one.
    Head injury’s are no joke and I grew up laughing them off and thinking it was no big deal as the headache went away after a few days, now that I’m older in life I have real mental issues that have to be from all the times I got my bell rung… it’s not just football players.

    There is a weird auto pilot thing that goes on, saw it plenty on the football field. I had a major concussion from a ski trip with a lot of witnesses. I remember wanting to do the biggest jump, but I don’t remember going down the hill or anything else until waking up in a hospital at 2 a.m.

    I played college football at an engineering school. +60% of the guys on the team were engineers. Smartest guy I know was a outside linebacker mechanical-aerospace engineer. Was a very tough human being like aj, would use his head as a weapon. Told me every time he got a concussion he felt smarter afterwards.

      To be fair, you will literally feel smarter after a concussion because the concussion makes you dumber while concussed. You will literally feel yourself getting smarter as you recover. That being said, that’s a great example of how someone can be really smart in one area of expertise, but completely illogical in another area. It happens all the damn time.

    I skated and rode bmx for years without a helmet and luckily never suffered a serious head injury, only time I ever saw stars or was flash KO’d was from my dog. My 120 pound pitbull headbutted me when I went to help him up and put him on my brothers bed. I bent down to help him up as he jumped up and we clashed heads, and everything went black for at least a second. He got me good. Pitbull Great Dane mix is a damn tank. And he almost fully KO’d me with his head lol.

    Philadelphia Catholic League medical staff was examining a kid years ago that got rocked and cleared him to go back in. I grabbed him and was like whooooaaa. His pupils were huge and it was 101 and sunny out. I said, "Three questions. What day is it, who are you playing right now and divide 10 by 0." His answers were Tuesday, Prep? and 5. As you can guess, one and two were wrong. Then asked if he was bleeding over and over for the next two hours. Kid was out for 5 weeks. Can't believe they were going to put him back in.

    People try to blame the league or the trainers for not doing enough to protect the guys. It's this mentality as to why guys are ending up like Ali. And as a former football athlete, this mentality is started early. Younger guys - if you're concussed, be concussed and take care of yourself and let your training staff and doctors help. Stop letting your pride turn you into a husk of yourself by age 55.

    I was concussed once playing high school football in the early 80s. I caught a pass, turned around and was immediately close line tackled with a forearm blow to the head. Everything went completely black, even though I could hear everything going on. My teammates picked me up and I walked back to the huddle with what I can only described as tunnel vision. Literally everything, the field, players, etc looked like they were down this long black tunnel, and I had no peripheral vision for a day or so. I went home after the game, went to sleep, and didn’t wake up until the next day.
