At 22 years old I’m barely seeing this movie and I loved it down to the core. Love the dialogue. These days I only watch shows like Better Call Saul or Breaking bad which have slow realistic dialogue like this. It’s rare to find good movies with amazing writing.
I live in the county where this movie was made. It is based on an excellent book by James Dickey. He was a lit professor at USC ( South Carolina). This is probably Burt Reynolds best performance.
No. Ned Beatty gave an even better performance in "Network". Remember his one on one speech to Peter Finch about how the corporate world really works? You'd never have know it was the same guy. I believe he will be better know for that one scene. Beatty was a great character actor.
But this was the first movie role for both Ned and Ronny Cox, both of whom went on to have great film careers. Without this role, we might never know who he was.
Brilliant move. Writing, directing, casting, acting, cinematography. When discussing movies and this one comes up, it bothers me that some people want to focus on one scene. This is a dramatic thriller masterpiece from start to finish. Burt Reynolds finest performance a few years before he became somewhat of a buffoon.
I know 3 Lewis’s in movies and by far this Lewis has the most fucked up journey to deal with (the other 2 being the boy in the wb king and I cartoon and the other in meet the robinsons), but between those 3 Lewis’s, this one has got to be the best Lewis.
a 3rd guy got into the truck with the Griner brothers at the beginning. We never see his face, the camera zooms in the hands holding a rifle or shotgun
Burt made some good movies but he made three great movies with great performances even if he wasn't the star of some of the films. This film, Boogie Nights and the Longest Yard. I wonder how many great films he could of made if he made better choices.
Drew was not weak. The character of Drew was written to act as a foil to Lewis. I believe that Drew represents morality. Drew is the guy who does the right thing. What Drew was advocating for was actually the correct decision to make and he certainly was not weak standing up to an alpha male like Lewis. The characters of Drew and Lewis provide the conflict between the characters in the group. Without the character of Drew, the story arc would have been completely different. Most people would have just avoided conflict against a man like Lewis. But Drew took a stand against Lewis. That's not weak. That takes courage. Lewis represents independence, fierceness, pragmaticism over morality. And in Lewis the audience finds its hero. Lewis knew that he would probably win that vote. Bobby was in shock, he had just been raped and all he wanted to do was get the hell home and to live down the humiliation of being raped by another man. Note how Bobby initially is rather assured when stares right into the camera and he unflinchingly says, "let's bury him" but then his confidence quickly runs away from his face and he turns away and his eyes drop and he meekly says, "I don't want this getting around. (pause) Ok?" And then he repeats the word, "ok, but this time it's barely a squeak and it's a question, not a statement. (Brilliant acting by Ned Beatty by the way.) And then the vote turns to Ed. Now Lewis was smart when he asked Bobby to vote before Ed. Lewis knew Bobby would vote to bury the rapist. (And I would too.) That instantly tips the scales in Lewis' favour. And now the pressure was on Ed. It's 2 to 1 and so it's much closer to going Lewis' way but it's not a given. Ed is clearly conflicted, he's heard both arguments and truth be told, he probably wanted to side with Drew, but Lewis was like an immovable object and Ed simply succumbed to the shear force of will of Lewis and he (Ed) got fell in line. Ed represents the every man. Ed is you, Ed is me. Ed would have had a real hard time firing that arrow into the rapist, unlike Lewis who just took aim and loosed the arrow. Without Drew, the story would not have been the same. It's kind of ironic that both Drew and Lewis, opposite sides of the same coin, ended up dying when they really were both removed from what went down between the mountain men and Bobby and Ed. They paid the price. Brilliant acting by all four men in a most remarkable movie.
Lewis survived ? ...though badly injured and it was Ed who had to take on the "hero saviour" role and Bobby was the only other man standing (so to speak) .
Yes. As Ed later says of Drew, "He was the best of us." I would argue that the specific circumstances of their situation precluded the best (i.e., most civilized) aspects of themselves from being followed. The movie brilliantly examines whether the right course of action changes once the protections of civilization are removed. I find Lewis persuasive in arguing that the normal procedures and protections of civilization were no longer present for them.
So Democracy is about people voting to establish a consensus? For the past few months all I’ve heard was that if a certain politician was elected it would be a threat to democracy. Thankfully we have the other party that elected their nominee through a fair and free election so there’s it’s not like 😊she was put there against the will of the people.
This film is awfully graphic for 1972. I first seen this film nearly 40 years ago when VHS rentals first became popular... and it was haunting. These men all gave superb performances. Does anyone know if this is the first film to address male on male rape? This type of crime is largely ignored, even today.
Don't know why everyone is slamming drew? If they ever get caught they would be found guilty immediately. He's scared anyone would and even all you tough keyboard warriors to.
Drew sure as hell is no coward or weakling he’s just considering the possible consequences for the choice they are now forced to make. Once you pull the trigger on that decision there’s no going back. I do think I probably would have went with the decision that Lewis proposed. In the moment they were in there was no way of knowing with any certainty how the legal process would play out. Extremely tough decision.
Yeah, no reason to slam Drew. Under normal circumstances his position would be the correct one, and even here there's a strong case for it. The thing that tips the balance in my eyes, and presumably in Ed's, is that there was precious little chance of their returning to their normal lives if the case was tried. Their best chance by far at that point was to bury the body, even though the risks of that course were enormous. Plus there's the fact that the cost to Bobby of having to tell the full story publicly would have destroyed his chance of resuming a normal life no matter how the trial came out. They did what they had to do in that circumstance, even though in virtually any other it would have been the wrong choice.
the man who portrayed the sheriff in this film was the man who wrote the book and he claimed everything reenacted in the movie actually happened........
In true reality, quite frankly they really didn't have a choice, if they had not buried him, they probably would not have made it out. Like Lewis said in the other scene, the law was most likely this guy's brother, cousin, uncle. Wouldn't trust that one, cut your loses and go, cost of doing business, and the hillbilly lost-- (and find Bobby some Tucks for that sore keister).

How many times has a situation like this played out in real life? Innumerable times to be sure.
I live in the county where this movie was made. It is based on an excellent book by James Dickey. He was a lit professor at USC ( South Carolina). This is probably Burt Reynolds best performance.
And James Dickey played the Sheriff at the end of this movie.
“I don’t want this gettin around”. Unfortunately for Ned it not only got around but stayed around the rest of his life. Rip
Burt Reynolds finest performance a few years before he became somewhat of a buffoon.
man thats about as buried as you can get. love that line
Long before Captain Jellico joined Starfleet.
Simple. Bury him. Party on.
And so will you !! Louis knew everyone else would side with him which is why he said, "We'll take a vote..."
yess
so..? 'democracy'...
It was survival of the fittest in the forest AND in that town's court of law.
Lewis knew the score.
Burt Reynolds in this specific movie is as cool as it gets.
I know 3 Lewis’s in movies and by far this Lewis has the most fucked up journey to deal with (the other 2 being the boy in the wb king and I cartoon and the other in meet the robinsons), but between those 3 Lewis’s, this one has got to be the best Lewis.
Good movie
a 3rd guy got into the truck with the Griner brothers at the beginning. We never see his face, the camera zooms in the hands holding a rifle or shotgun
What happens in a democracy when the majority agree to break the law?
Chubby Boy has now outlived Healthy Buck Burt and the other 2 are the same age as Burt when he died.
Now Ned and Burt are reunited.
Burt reynolds sounds like a preacher at the beginning. Lol.
Burt made some good movies but he made three great movies with great performances even if he wasn't the star of some of the films. This film, Boogie Nights and the Longest Yard. I wonder how
many great films he could of made if he made better choices.
I'm with Lewis
it is a matter of THE LAW!!
What would they have done if Ed had sided with Drew? They would've been deadlocked, two against two.
Brother where Art Thou?
(Brilliant acting by Ned Beatty by the way.)
And then the vote turns to Ed.
Lord of the Flies. Human nature.
Burt looked just like the sort of man youd want to be in this situation .....had sum thick set arms on him like christ he was pumped fr this picture
"Doug died." Gregory Paul Richardson
The acting!!
I'm talkin about da LAW!!!!!!
drew painted into a corner there was no escaping moment he said he believes in democracy, lewis was basically right

the man who portrayed the sheriff in this film was the man who wrote the book and he claimed everything reenacted in the movie actually happened........
Burt Reynolds was hot back then. Why he couldn't he be in the pig scene
