    Very informative and well done video. My Hegner is the later one with built in tension release and it is brilliant, however I agree with you entirely that a quick tension release is essential especially when doing fretwork with internal cuts. If anyone has a Hegner without a quick tension release fitted; the new part featured in this video would be one of the best investments you could make in your workshop, saving a massive amount of time. Top marks for your video.

      scrimperuk, Thanks for taking the time to watch my video and for leaving the very nice comment. The Hegner saw is a great piece of equipment and when you can do this upgrade to the older saws it really makes a difference. Happy scrolling....

    What a fantastic upgrade to that saw Paul. That old system looked like a complete pain in the butt to be doing any type of fretwork but with the new modification, I can see how it will go a long way to making fretwork enjoyable for you. Thanks for sharing this upgrade with us. Absolutely fantastic modification

    What a great, yet simple modification. Wish it'd been around for my first Hegner. Now I have the front tensioner, so don't need it, but I remain impressed.

    Thanks Paul for this video. I also wanted to upgrade my saw so I ordered this upgrade. The thing I like about this is I can put more tension on the blade by turning the lever a half turn before flipping the lever. No other blade release will do this.

    I ordered and installed it. Good news thank you for the super good info. I call advanced machinery and she told me the top arm would work just fine with no induced vibrations. I was thinking about getting one but I could almost buy a used hegner with the new arms for about the price of two arms.

    • @paulsmessyworkshop
      @paulsmessyworkshop  6 років тому +1

      Moonie, I am surprised that they told you there was no problem installing the updated upper arm, the rep that I dealt with told me just the opposite. Oh well, big business, right? You are right about the arms being expensive. That is probably one of the things that aggravates me the most about my Hegner is the price of parts and accessories. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment.

    I just bought my third Hegner and I upgraded all of them with the quick release and the quick clamp for the blades (with the aluminium knob). Both these upgrades make them a joy to use and are absolutely necessary imo, especially when doing alot of inside fretwork and blade changes.

    • @paulsmessyworkshop
      @paulsmessyworkshop  3 роки тому

      I have upgraded to the newer upper clamps with the aluminum knob but removed the knob and replaced that with a lever. I like that a lot better, easier on my hands. Hegner makes a great saw. Thanks for your input and sorry it took so long for me to reply.

    Thanks for this video. I bought the upgrade rod. In a way I think it's a better option than the front lever. Any extra weight will create more vibration. (Newton's First Law)

    Paul do you know if this attachment fits any other scroll saws? I have a Cental Machinery 16” scroll saw with the exact tension knob system that you had before you upgraded. That would make inside cuts so much easier.

    • @paulsmessyworkshop
      @paulsmessyworkshop  4 роки тому

      Roy, since this tension rod is made by and for the Hegner saw I doubt if it would work on ones made by other companies. For the price, about $65, I don't think I would want to try. At least knowing what it looks like you might be able to fabricate your own. Good luck and thanks for watching.

    Now they sell the whole upper arm with the lever tensioner on the front end of the arm , like the new ones have on them . The price is $ 179.95 You can order the same rear tensioner rod assembly in this video part no. O12L for $64.95 also

    • @carlkrebs1
      @carlkrebs1 4 роки тому

      So , basically you have two choices , rear tension rod and spring assembly or more convenient front tensioner lever on a replacement upper arm . Either way it definetly speeds up blade changing and inside cutting speed . What we're all after . Much more enjoyable cutting on our saws .

    • @paulsmessyworkshop
      @paulsmessyworkshop  4 роки тому

      Carl, I appreciate your information. When I replaced the rear tensioner I was told by Hegner that replacing the upper arm might not be a good idea on my saw. My saw is quite old, a 1984 model. The concern at that time was that the extra weight might cause extra vibration hence extra wear on the bushings. Also this was a video I did in combination with Hegner, they supplied the tensioner and I did the video more or less as an instruction and information on how to do the swap. At a future date I still may replace the upper arm with the newer version to see how it works out. I appreciate your watching and for providing the good information. One thing for sure, Hegner makes a great saw.

      Rose, thanks for taking the time to watch my video and to leave the comment. If I understand your post correctly the part that tensions the blade on your saw has broken. If it is a Hegner and you need a replacement you can get one like mine by contacting Hegner via the information in the description below the video. If you wanted to purchase a saw like mine (a great choice by the way), you can contact Advanced Machinery via the link in the description below the video or at: advanced-machinery.myshopify.com/pages/frontpage Just an added piece of information, the people at Advanced Machinery are great to deal with. If you end up purchasing a Hegner I am sure you will be very satisfied with it. I hope this helped. Please contact me at paulsmessyworkshop@gmail.com if I can help.

    Can you please tell me the dimensions of the part? Length , distance between the steel prisims,etc? I believe this part may fit my old Craftsman scroll saw but I need to know the dimensions and they are not listed on the website. Thanks in advance.

    • @paulsmessyworkshop
      @paulsmessyworkshop  6 років тому +1

      Jay, the rod is about 1/4" in diameter. The overall length is right around 7" and the bottom 2" are threaded. The distance between the two prisms can range from about 4 1/4" to about 5 1/4". I would have to take my saw apart to give you exact measurements. If you need more information, email me at paulsmessyworkshop@gmail.com and I will try to help you out. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. I hope this information helps.

      @paulsmessyworkshop  7 років тому

      jrgal27, I rewatched the video and I don't understand your comment. At that particular point in the video I was making test cuts in a small piece of plywood. They were just small cuts more to test how the new tension rod worked than to cut much wood. I think at the most the cuts were about 3/4 of an inch long. The video was not sped up. If you have any other comments or would like to discuss this further please email me at paulsmessyworkshop@gmail.com or leave an additional comment here. I appreciate your taking the time to watch the video and for leaving your comment.

      i beleive this modification is very good but at 6:18 can you explain why the tensioner jumps up itself if like you say you have not messed with the video and you can clearly see the video jumping sometimes when you replace the blade and it tightens itself 6:24
