I would love to know if you guys find any particular cultivar to be easier to harvest from. I assume the hedgy/shrubby cultivars and the ones would be easier and those that have nuts that go red would be easier to spot.
If you find one cultivar like that, that is of good stock from a disease/pest perspective I'd love to hear about it.
Thank you guys for doing the lord's work.

I've been wanting to plant a nut tree in my backyard. I have been thinking about hazelnut. You said you need to have pollinators in order to pollinate the hazelnut. What kind of pollinator would I need to get?

Pollinators: bees, bumblebees, solitary bees, butterflies etc.

backyardfarmer oh. I thought you were talking about getting another hazelnut for better pollination. Pollinators such as insects I got plenty of 👍😁

Hazelnuts cannot self-pollinate and require pollen from another tree to produce nuts. We call these other trees pollenizers. Hazelnuts cannot have the same version of the pollen gene, called the S-allele, if you want them to produce nuts. There is a whole list of S-alleles that have been determined for different cultivars. Here is a webpage that shows the different S-alleles and lists some varieties: www.growinghazelnuts.com/our-nursery/understanding-compatibility/are-they-compatible/. Please note, these varieties were developed for growing in Oregon's climate. Cultivars for the Eastern US are still in development, and will reaching the market in 2020. Check the Hybrid Hazelnut Consortium website for more information and to keep updated: www.arborday.org/programs/hazelnuts/
