    I was invited to takeover the MEDTakeovers Snapchat account for a day in July 2017 to talk about my career as a pathologist (the video is taken from the Snapchat story, which is why it's vertical...sorry!). I discuss the basics of what pathologists do, what training is required, etc, and I answer a variety of questions from the Snapchat audience. Then I show you a tour of the pathology lab (starting at 2:58) and the basic steps of how a biopsy of skin is turned into a glass slide that I can then examine and diagnose so that the dermatologist will know how to best treat the patient. And this is just a fraction of all the stuff that pathologists can do. It's a look at a day in my life, but there are so many other types of pathologists who do very different things every day. One thing that makes pathology so awesome is the diversity of knowledge and practice settings for pathologists. Hope you enjoy. Full video will also be available on MEDTakeovers.com soon: www.medtakeove...

      Is a fellowship required for pathology? Why can't a pathologist start working immediately after residency?

    Pathology is the coolest and most overlooked/underappreciated specialty in medicine. The first time I shadowed a pathologist I knew what my calling was. Now as MSII about to be MSIII it's all I can think about!

    Thanks for sharing the journey. I’ve worked in healthcare since 1987, first blindly and then with schooling. Majority of years spent in the OR in some capacity. It was years before I learned exactly the role of a pathologist or completely understood it. There is a lot of pathology exposure in the OR. Most fascinating was the MD that entered the OR suite and began processing removed tissue right there. Offering a clinical evaluation so surgeons knew whether to cut more or close. Always been very intriguing.

    What a decent nice guy !! I enjoyed my partial residency in pathology as I was finishing my OBS Gyn specialty. My 6 months of pathology was useful all my 35 year career. Pathology knowledge is very, very useful.

    A few years back, I had to have a mole removed due to the fear that it would be malignant. I always wondered who worked with interpreting whether or not it had a disease, and last year during a class called a "Dr. Rubin's Mini Medical School", I found out that pathologists worked with it. I was not completely sure as to whether or not I wanted to dive down this road, dedicating my time and extra effort, taking extra classes, thinning out my already-busy schedule with extra work and research, but I cannot tell you how much this video helped me understand that this is something I am willing to work for, knowing that I can help other people and do something that I admire with a steady beam of enthusiasm. Thank you so much for this video which helped me to understand that this is something I want to spend most of my life working for. I am starting high school soon, so I know I have a lot of work ahead of me, but this video has helped me see that the work is worth it.

There are thousands of us pathologists on #pathTwitter, so it’s a great place to see tons of interesting pathology cases and meet a lot of very helpful and friendly pathologists. I wish I had this opportunity when I was a teenager interested in pathology. You might like my Twitter 101 guide: pathinfo.wikia.com/wiki/Social_Media_Guide_for_Pathologists. Awesome video
    What are the cons of pathology in comparison to clinical specialties where you have to deal with the patients?

    • @JMGardnerMD
      @JMGardnerMD  2 роки тому +4

      Very few cons in my opinion! The main one is that pathologist in general are dependent on other doctors were sending us specimens. That means it’s not as easy as a pathologist to just go out and open up your own office/laboratory. It can be done, but it is more complicated because it requires equipment and technical know how, contracts with insurance companies (if you’re in the United States at least), and connections with other doctors like surgeons, dermatologist, gastroenterologist, etc. who will send their biopsies to you via some other lab. Because of that, most pathologist go and work for a pre-existing practice, hospital, or a large corporate laboratory. Which means that while there are overall plenty of pathology jobs in my opinion, one must be a little bit flexible when finding a job (both geographically and in regards to what type of work you will be doing). But there are so many benefits to Pathology that make up for that con. It’s fascinating, you help patients from behind the scenes, You don’t often talk to patients face-to-face but you do get to talk to lots of other people including laboratory staff and other doctors so there’s plenty of social interaction, you get to avoid many of the frustrating parts of face-to-face patient care like dealing with clinic scheduling, complex social issues, insurance preauthorizations etc. Don’t give me wrong I have a huge respect for people who do face-to-face patient care. My wife is a child psychiatrist after all. But for me I’m very very thankful that I chose Pathology as a career!

  • @TheAIKnowledgeHub
    @TheAIKnowledgeHub 2 роки тому +1

    Serious question. Couldn't image recognition technology replace you? (Note I'm not asking to be mean, but I really am wondering)
    Like if you trained a machine learning algorithm with you. It seems like the AI could at first make your work quicker and you just had to do a quick check to see if it is right. And then when it tends to be always right or at least more right than the human, it could replace you or cut your job down to just putting the slide in the machine. And I imagine the hospital would want to save money and they would just use some low paid worker to do that.
    Again, I'm not asking to be mean or freak anyone out. But it looks like 99% of your job is to look at a image, match it up to your knowledge of what it could be, and then paperwork. Something 100% an AI should be able to do on it's own if allowed. Is there something you kept out?

      I know that your comment is a year ol already, but AI is used in my lab to count amount of positive cells for imunostains. I'd not trust it yet to make indipendent diagnosis tho. I belive a pathologist always will be needed to read anamnesis and make judgement on witch stains to use or if more sections is needed.

    • @JMGardnerMD
      @JMGardnerMD  4 роки тому +3

      Nope, I've never kept a microscope at home. I have to rest sometime! If you want to start exploring pathology slides but don't have a microscope, check out the free virtual slides on pathpresenter.net and kikoxp.com. Both require signing up for a free account, but the slides are amazing and you can zoom in to see close up. It's just like what we see under the microscope. In the future, many if not most pathologists will probably eventually look at most cases this way rather than with a microscope (although I still love using my microscope personally!)
