Love seeing the old GT's being given a new life, those bikes were something special. I have owned several early '90's GT's starting with the Timberline in dark green as I was on a very tight budget but it was a worthy bike for my commute to work until it got stolen. Then I got the red GT Pantera Al, another Timberline to replace my stolen Pantera AL and then The GT Zaskar LE (with Pace RC 35's ) . some years later in 2001 -2002 I bough a GT iDrive 6.0 (red) and later a GT iDrive 4.0, which along with my Pantera Al and Zaskar LE were my favourite GT bikes. I am looking to buy another GT again soon to build up as a MTB/BMX hybrid.
I’ve got a mid 90’s Klein Adroit similarly spek’d that I’m currently restoring, full XTR, JUDY forks, Selle Italia Flite saddle. Absolutely stunning paint job and the frame is dent free. Same issue with narrow bars but they’re authentic. It’s a blast to ride and I added some red Ritchey SPD pedals. Nice rare GT…..thank you for restoring it and not single speeding it like a lot of guys do on here.
Another nice restoration, as usual. I think the bike turned out nice. It is always fun to go back and work on a bike like that and let it evolve into a creative process. Last year I adopted 3 vintage bikes. I did a lot of work on all of them. And I'm still changing little things here and there. Vintage bikes are all I really wish to own and ride at this point.
I always wanted a GT Psyclone. It is a dream bike for me. It's hard to even find a Karakoram these days. I had a '95 Tequesta which was pretty good too before the chain derailled in between the spokes and cassette pulling the derailleur hanger all the way up.
Wonderful! Like the originality to it, especially seeing the XT cassette going back on. I have the aluminium version of the holy trinity, the Zaskar. As pretty as she looks, I’m always worried about the old lightweight aluminium frame so she won’t get to see the trails like the Cyclone did here! Steel is real 🤙
Lovely GT. I have two in my bike-barn as well:a '97 Ricochet and a '98 Zaskar LE. They are a testament to the pioneers in MTB engineering and build quality. Of all my bikes, those 2 will not leave my collection. Thx for sharing!
Sweet GT! I still have my teal 1989 GT Timberline with Biopace and the rear brake strangely mounted underneath the chain stays. A bike of its time for sure. I like your Cyclone. Great video.
Wonderful restoration! I miss my old GT Aggressor from my high school days. Keep it as original as you can, these bikes are getting harder and harder to find. My current bike is a restored 1998 Specialized Hardrock FS and it rides like a dream. Keep up the good work sir! Love your videos!!!!
That is a sweet bike! The restoration was enjoyable. Love watching these videos,. Love, love, LOVE those older bikes. And those ride by shots with the Insta 360 at ground level were really cool! Thanks for sharing!
I got an Schwinn Aluminum Comp last year and I just finished a complete rebuild on the bike to make it more user friendly to me. It was a lot of work from this beginner bike mechanic but it was so worth it and I would do it again. so the moral of this story is that when you find a bike that you love it then becomes a labor of love and all you want to do is continue to make it a better bike again and again.
I love watching your videos, Old Shuv! Keep ‘em coming! You are helping us gain knowledge, helping the newer generations gain an appreciation of these awesome old bikes, and all in a meditative space…well done.
I would love to stumble upon an awesome frame like that! I proudly ride a fully restored, polished, tuned Pro Flex 656 my stepfather sent me. It was a bike I wanted in the 90s and now I have it. A GT from that era is on my short list to own and now that I know about the filet brazed Cyclone...whelp, now I have to start searching. BTW, I own a hand built, full-custom, filet brazed Curtis XR650 with the clear coat. She gets looks and compliments everywhere we go. Nice work!
I resto modded my grandpas 92 team avalanche and i always wish I kept it original. Not too bummed though because I tacod the back wheel and the 7speed xt group was getting a little tired. I’m glad bikes like these exist
Rob, another great video. The background music you and Toasty Rides use for your videos is spot on for vintage bike builds. You don't need fast pace head bashing music to go with precision cleaning and assembly. The custom GT's you mention are awesome bikes if you are lucky enough to find one in steel or titanium. Your decision to keep period (vintage) componets is a good one along with improving the fad parts of the period, the ridiculously narrow handle bars, and long, low angle stem. You stated you would be on the search for higher quality parts of the period to swap with the originals. I understand that statement. Your audience should also understand your UA-cam channel is a business. The time and effort to make the videos isn't free. Endorsement of sponsors in order to recoup cost and/or make some income is part of the process. As a volunteer at two of the Bicycle Collective locations I enjoy your channel. It provides entertainment and education. It gives me ideas for my own builds or the ones I do for the Collective.
No. That was a total bone-headed move. Now whoever rides that bike won't be able to stop. All cantilever brakes are garbage, especially ones with that Shimano straddle cable thing. Would you ride that bike with tires that were made in 1991? No. We should not ride bikes with cantilever brakes either.
@@solarheat9016 thanks for your expert advice....lol. Cantilever brakes only worked for twenty years before they became garbage(replaced by newer tech)? Fire XC are still in production today. Threadless stems came out in 1990. And that is a 91 Judy fork.
First bike I built was a GT and I tried to put the bottom bracket in backwards. Luckily they got it out and installed it for me. I built a headset tool out of some thread rod and boards and the rest was pretty easy except cutting the cables and hoses. Ended up buying a cutter for that stuff. I think it's been at least 25 years since I did a complete bike build now.
That Shimano Deore parts kit is XTR before it was called that.(crank and hubs anyway) Upper U brake scott SE. One of my first bikes was a Fisher CR-7 with that same groupo. Nice bike man.
IMHO, I prefer taking my 3x9 Giant NRS3 set up over my Giant XTC 1x10 set-up. Awesome video for a classic frame. Looking forward to the next evolution of this bike. I’d say my soft spot for MTB’s from 90’s to 2005. I just love how they were made.
I love Pure old Bikes but: I bought myself today a Rockshox 30 Silver TK for my loved "92 Marin Eldridge Grade and now i convert it from Threaded to Discmount Ahead Fork . Now i have to put my Wheels to a Shop for new Discbrake-Hubs, because i like to keep my Mavic M231 Rims.
That looks amazing! I'd love to have a retro mtb too, most of them here in Sweden are either super expensive and nice or rusty and broken so it's hard to find something.
I love gt's of this era, I have two a palomar very original and my fav karakoram similar spec to this Korea stem etc but rigid will be a keeper when done. The patina is great but I'd be tempted to strip it raw and clearcoat it to show off the workmanship. Also Mag21 rockshox.
Gorgeous bike, and yes, there's nothing like the ride of a hand-built steel bike. Put some period correct tires on it, a Flite saddle and get rid of those ridiculous handlebars!
And these young whipper snappers think internal cable routing is a new thing... And dropper posts? Yep. We had them back then too! Just took a little more to drop them. Love your videos. I'm working on a smoked salmon pink Tequesta currently, and am debating on going 1X in the front. For the trails it would ride on, and around town, the big and small chain rings don't get used much anyway.
I love the build! It’s the frame I always wanted but couldn’t afford! A very enjoyable video. If I’m not mistaken this is the third gt you’ve done. I love them all and wonder which was your favorite!? Keep on doing what you do!
I really need a rear cassette for a 2001 Rockhopper I am working on, what is a cheap but good option? Im wanting to go 9 or 10 gears on the back, ultimately do a 1x10 in the end, but budget says stick to the 3x8 drivetrain.
I have had at least 5 GT’s. I think they are some of the finest riding bikes that I have ridden over the years, riding in the Sierra’s. What’s your opinion on the GT bike?
I guess it’s time to show one. Sometimes on builds I don’t fully know the status or need for a fork until I have it on a bike ready to ride. On older forks I’m hesitant if it’s working well to open them up as older parts and seals are not always available. Some forks I have serviced without filming like the gen 1 SID I put on my Brodie (I actually rebuilt it quite a while back without even having a build for it in mind yet).
As a note, on this bike, I did not do anything. It looked hardly used and rode like a new fork, I was pleasantly surprised on the ride, it was plush an smooth, perhaps the best 90’s Judy I’ve ever felt likely due to the White Bros internals.
I'm glad you decided not to retro mod it. Some bikes need to stay true to there roots. Shorter stem and riser bars I understand, I do the same on my builds and it does make a difference. Nice bike for sure....do you prefer 18" size bike that you ride?
It went together easily in less than an hour. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Make sure the front fork is forward or the pedals will hit the front tire. Tires are both a little soft so it needs air before I ride it. The rear wheel didn't come with a clamp regular bolts hold it on. The front had the clamp. No scratches out of box. Rims are a little off with a slight wobble. They could have spent more time with the spoke tool fixing the run out. So far out of the box I'm happy with it. I did replace the pedals with a nice aftermarket set. After riding it a bit my A$$ is a bit sore so I ordered another seat. Overall I'm nearly 60 and didn't ride a bike in 30 years. I like my new 29" Schwinn. It will be used for casual rides with my friend.
Old bikes are great, but in most of them the position behind the wheel is a tragedy, it is terribly exhausting the back, it is best to completely replace the stem and handlebars with a broken one

I don't get the tires on this build. They are way too new and also pretty ugly. Either period correct Panaracers or Tioga or Ritchey, even Michelin, or something modern =with more air volume. Wheels are also pretty basic, even if I appreciate the Bontrager BCX rims. A good wheelset with Parallax hubs and Mavic rims can't be too expensive. Otherwise, really nice. Cheers.

My 91 Daktari White GT Avalanche was the coolest looking bike I've ever had. They had some amazing paint jobs back in the day.
Such a great looking bike; back when bikes had a soul and charm they don’t really have anymore.
Missmatched tyres get the comments going like the upside down headset cups did, cleaver guy! Always enjoy these resto builds and love GTs 🤙
Lol 😂 they match and they’re mismatched at the same time. I love Panaracer Fire xc pros

Great to see old bikes brought back to life 🎉
an old GT, I was 15 at that time... Great!!! Thanks for the vid.

Great restomod - still keeping the ride quality of the original build.
I was wondering, since you didn't lately, did you stop painting bikes? It was one of my favourite part of your videos since you were so creative!
What a beauty 😍.
Azonic bars fresh
what chemicals and lubricants do you use. Do you overhaul bearings? How do you adjust bearings?
Red nail polish could work on those chips too.

What u brakes are those?
Why the mis matched tires? Running low on tires? I am lol

I usually like your builds but what in the world did you put a red wall tire on the front and a Grey wall on the back? Makes it look thrown together.
You weren’t a fan of a decision made by an artist while creating his artwork? Good thing there are no rules when it comes to art, right Steve?
Love the Redwall tire, I actually paused the video and Google the tire so I can order one.

Absolute shame to put a 98 fork, front v-brake and riser bars on a 91 gem like that. Period Correct build would be SO much more appropriate.
