Love seeing the old GT's being given a new life, those bikes were something special.
I have owned several early '90's GT's starting with the Timberline in dark green as I was on a very tight budget but it was a worthy bike for my commute to work until it got stolen. Then I got the red GT Pantera Al, another Timberline to replace my stolen Pantera AL and then The GT Zaskar LE (with Pace RC 35's ) . some years later in 2001 -2002 I bough a GT iDrive 6.0 (red) and later a GT iDrive 4.0, which along with my Pantera Al and Zaskar LE were my favourite GT bikes. I am looking to buy another GT again soon to build up as a MTB/BMX hybrid.
Wonderful! Like the originality to it, especially seeing the XT cassette going back on. I have the aluminium version of the holy trinity, the Zaskar. As pretty as she looks, I’m always worried about the old lightweight aluminium frame so she won’t get to see the trails like the Cyclone did here! Steel is real 🤙
I love seeing one of my favortite bike restorers chatting with another of my favorite bike restorers. And of course I agree, steel is real!!
I’ve got a mid 90’s Klein Adroit similarly spek’d that I’m currently restoring, full XTR, JUDY forks, Selle Italia Flite saddle. Absolutely stunning paint job and the frame is dent free. Same issue with narrow bars but they’re authentic. It’s a blast to ride and I added some red Ritchey SPD pedals. Nice rare GT…..thank you for restoring it and not single speeding it like a lot of guys do on here.
GT cyclone and xizang are dream bikes for me.
Dido 😁
I always wanted a GT Psyclone. It is a dream bike for me. It's hard to even find a Karakoram these days. I had a '95 Tequesta which was pretty good too before the chain derailled in between the spokes and cassette pulling the derailleur hanger all the way up.
That's sweet, I've got a GT Ricochet chromo mtb, bought it new 30 yrs ago, still ride it. Keep up the good work!!
Another nice restoration, as usual. I think the bike turned out nice. It is always fun to go back and work on a bike like that and let it evolve into a creative process. Last year I adopted 3 vintage bikes. I did a lot of work on all of them. And I'm still changing little things here and there. Vintage bikes are all I really wish to own and ride at this point.
I got an Schwinn Aluminum Comp last year and I just finished a complete rebuild on the bike to make it more user friendly to me. It was a lot of work from this beginner bike mechanic but it was so worth it and I would do it again. so the moral of this story is that when you find a bike that you love it then becomes a labor of love and all you want to do is continue to make it a better bike again and again.
Absolutely love an old school retro MTB. Thanks for sharing the restoration.
an old GT, I was 15 at that time... Great!!! Thanks for the vid.
The internal cabling brought a smile to my face. Great build.
Such a great looking bike; back when bikes had a soul and charm they don’t really have anymore.
Lovely GT. I have two in my bike-barn as well:a '97 Ricochet and a '98 Zaskar LE. They are a testament to the pioneers in MTB engineering and build quality. Of all my bikes, those 2 will not leave my collection. Thx for sharing!
Wonderful restoration! I miss my old GT Aggressor from my high school days. Keep it as original as you can, these bikes are getting harder and harder to find. My current bike is a restored 1998 Specialized Hardrock FS and it rides like a dream. Keep up the good work sir! Love your videos!!!!
That is a sweet bike! The restoration was enjoyable. Love watching these videos,. Love, love, LOVE those older bikes. And those ride by shots with the Insta 360 at ground level were really cool!
Thanks for sharing!
what a beautiful gem you have found. Excelent video! Thanks.
Great to see old bikes brought back to life 🎉
12:00 love to see the Park Tool DAG in action!
A sharpie? Dollar store nail polish next time! Love your videos...
It was a sharpie paint pen. It actually worked really well but it was a trial. I’ve used mail polish and it does work well also.
My 91 Daktari White GT Avalanche was the coolest looking bike I've ever had. They had some amazing paint jobs back in the day.
I love watching your videos, Old Shuv! Keep ‘em coming! You are helping us gain knowledge, helping the newer generations gain an appreciation of these awesome old bikes, and all in a meditative space…well done.
The Kore stem, Azonic risers and Oury Grips are quintessentially 90s GT.
Love the build. Great steel frame I have a similar time frame old steel Trek 950 mtb that I love....
Nice call on the front brake swap. I used to love those Fire XC tires.
No. That was a total bone-headed move. Now whoever rides that bike won't be able to stop. All cantilever brakes are garbage, especially ones with that Shimano straddle cable thing. Would you ride that bike with tires that were made in 1991? No. We should not ride bikes with cantilever brakes either.
@@solarheat9016 thanks for your expert advice....lol. Cantilever brakes only worked for twenty years before they became garbage(replaced by newer tech)? Fire XC are still in production today. Threadless stems came out in 1990. And that is a 91 Judy fork.
I resto modded my grandpas 92 team avalanche and i always wish I kept it original. Not too bummed though because I tacod the back wheel and the 7speed xt group was getting a little tired. I’m glad bikes like these exist
I had one of these - Super rare
First bike I built was a GT and I tried to put the bottom bracket in backwards. Luckily they got it out and installed it for me. I built a headset tool out of some thread rod and boards and the rest was pretty easy except cutting the cables and hoses. Ended up buying a cutter for that stuff.
I think it's been at least 25 years since I did a complete bike build now.
As an Iowa State alumnus I'm a big fan of a "Cyclone" with a red and yellow (cardinal and gold) colorway. This bike looks great!
I love Pure old Bikes but: I bought myself today a Rockshox 30 Silver TK for my loved "92 Marin Eldridge Grade and now i convert it from Threaded to Discmount Ahead Fork . Now i have to put my Wheels to a Shop for new Discbrake-Hubs, because i like to keep my Mavic M231 Rims.
Rob, another great video. The background music you and Toasty Rides use for your videos is spot on for vintage bike builds. You don't need fast pace head bashing music to go with precision cleaning and assembly. The custom GT's you mention are awesome bikes if you are lucky enough to find one in steel or titanium. Your decision to keep period (vintage) componets is a good one along with improving the fad parts of the period, the ridiculously narrow handle bars, and long, low angle stem. You stated you would be on the search for higher quality parts of the period to swap with the originals. I understand that statement. Your audience should also understand your UA-cam channel is a business. The time and effort to make the videos isn't free. Endorsement of sponsors in order to recoup cost and/or make some income is part of the process. As a volunteer at two of the Bicycle Collective locations I enjoy your channel. It provides entertainment and education. It gives me ideas for my own builds or the ones I do for the Collective.
Reminds me of my 93 Bravado that I rode for twenty years. Looks great that cyclone!
That Shimano Deore parts kit is XTR before it was called that.(crank and hubs anyway) Upper U brake scott SE. One of my first bikes was a Fisher CR-7 with that same groupo. Nice bike man.
Wonderful restoration!
I would love to stumble upon an awesome frame like that! I proudly ride a fully restored, polished, tuned Pro Flex 656 my stepfather sent me. It was a bike I wanted in the 90s and now I have it. A GT from that era is on my short list to own and now that I know about the filet brazed Cyclone...whelp, now I have to start searching. BTW, I own a hand built, full-custom, filet brazed Curtis XR650 with the clear coat. She gets looks and compliments everywhere we go.
Nice work!
Wooow.... that's a GEM! super cool restoration man... cheers from Brazil
Lovely looking GT “steel is real”
That is awsome buddy 👍👌🚴♂️
Nice , you found a gem, awesome work.
Azonic bars fresh
Beautiful, I wouldn't change anything. Great work ! 👌✌️🖖
IMHO, I prefer taking my 3x9 Giant NRS3 set up over my Giant XTC 1x10 set-up.
Awesome video for a classic frame. Looking forward to the next evolution of this bike.
I’d say my soft spot for MTB’s from 90’s to 2005. I just love how they were made.
Red nail polish could work on those chips too.
I appreciate that you kept the original components of choose components of the bike's period.
Wow, I would love to find one of these frames. Just now wrapping up a '97 Klein Pulse Pro.
Love this build. My next build after I finish this proflex for my 9 year old will be a GT I think.
Great restomod - still keeping the ride quality of the original build.
I love gt's of this era, I have two a palomar very original and my fav karakoram similar spec to this Korea stem etc but rigid will be a keeper when done.
The patina is great but I'd be tempted to strip it raw and clearcoat it to show off the workmanship. Also Mag21 rockshox.
That looks amazing! I'd love to have a retro mtb too, most of them here in Sweden are either super expensive and nice or rusty and broken so it's hard to find something.
26er 🤙🏼
I use to have a gt code red Coca-Cola bike with the aluminum frame
Gah I love the old GT frames the most
Missmatched tyres get the comments going like the upside down headset cups did, cleaver guy! Always enjoy these resto builds and love GTs 🤙
Lol 😂 they match and they’re mismatched at the same time. I love Panaracer Fire xc pros
Cleaver lol
I love the build! It’s the frame I always wanted but couldn’t afford! A very enjoyable video. If I’m not mistaken this is the third gt you’ve done. I love them all and wonder which was your favorite!? Keep on doing what you do!
I was wondering, since you didn't lately, did you stop painting bikes? It was one of my favourite part of your videos since you were so creative!
Fire xc pros ❤
What a beauty 😍.
Want to have that bike
I like steel bikes and this is a nice one 😊👍
I like those old GT bikes but hated the cable routing under the bottom bracket where the cables can get contaminated
Why not put red wall tyre on rear also. Can't understand why not to.they look so good
I'd love to show you a picture of the 1970 Schwinn Continental 10-speed I restore that was my dad's
what chemicals and lubricants do you use. Do you overhaul bearings? How do you adjust bearings?
I have had at least 5 GT’s. I think they are some of the finest riding bikes that I have ridden over the years, riding in the Sierra’s.
What’s your opinion on the GT bike?
Whoa a Cyclone so old it’s not a Psyclone! Where’d you find the brake hanger?
Auld Shuv'nor 🧐
I'm glad you decided not to retro mod it. Some bikes need to stay true to there roots. Shorter stem and riser bars I understand, I do the same on my builds and it does make a difference. Nice bike for sure....do you prefer 18" size bike that you ride?
Love the older bike builds! are you going to be doing any more re-paints during your builds?
I really need a rear cassette for a 2001 Rockhopper I am working on, what is a cheap but good option? Im wanting to go 9 or 10 gears on the back, ultimately do a 1x10 in the end, but budget says stick to the 3x8 drivetrain.
It went together easily in less than an hour. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Make sure the front fork is forward or the pedals will hit the front tire. Tires are both a little soft so it needs air before I ride it. The rear wheel didn't come with a clamp regular bolts hold it on. The front had the clamp. No scratches out of box. Rims are a little off with a slight wobble. They could have spent more time with the spoke tool fixing the run out. So far out of the box I'm happy with it. I did replace the pedals with a nice aftermarket set. After riding it a bit my A$$ is a bit sore so I ordered another seat. Overall I'm nearly 60 and didn't ride a bike in 30 years. I like my new 29" Schwinn. It will be used for casual rides with my friend.
Great build! Where in Utah is that beautiful trail you are riding? What’s it called? Thanks!
It’s the Bonneville Shoreline trail just below Ben Lomond peak
great build as always - quick question though. how come you never rebuild the forks? or at least replace the fork oil and seals?
I guess it’s time to show one. Sometimes on builds I don’t fully know the status or need for a fork until I have it on a bike ready to ride. On older forks I’m hesitant if it’s working well to open them up as older parts and seals are not always available. Some forks I have serviced without filming like the gen 1 SID I put on my Brodie (I actually rebuilt it quite a while back without even having a build for it in mind yet).
As a note, on this bike, I did not do anything. It looked hardly used and rode like a new fork, I was pleasantly surprised on the ride, it was plush an smooth, perhaps the best 90’s Judy I’ve ever felt likely due to the White Bros internals.
What u brakes are those?
Why the mis matched tires? Running low on tires? I am lol
I wanted a retro set of tires on this one and was able to find these two, they are both Panaracer Fire xc pro’s just one in gray and the other red…
@@oldshovel thoughts on the tires? Hard to find colored sidewall tires or colored tires at all anymore.
I think now except one Gary Fisher bike all my bikes except my GT Karakoram have all disc brakes
Old bikes are great, but in most of them the position behind the wheel is a tragedy, it is terribly exhausting the back, it is best to completely replace the stem and handlebars with a broken one
A little work and cleaning and it's good for another 30 years. I'm not so sure about the longevity of those carbon fiber bikes.
А что за кассета новая стоит ? Какая самая большая звезда ?
What are you doing with them bikes when you are done with them?
Old Shuv
Why don't us invest in an ultrasonic cleaner. It will save you so much time.
That would drive me nutz wheels that don't match and them handlebar grips look uncomfortable as hell
There's one youtube chanel i'm follow with like 20 or so follower he has a vintage GT a vintage Litespeed, Mercedes benz Amp. his chanel is similar its Name is (Bike and Blogs)
I usually like your builds but what in the world did you put a red wall tire on the front and a Grey wall on the back? Makes it look thrown together.
You weren’t a fan of a decision made by an artist while creating his artwork? Good thing there are no rules when it comes to art, right Steve?
Love the Redwall tire, I actually paused the video and Google the tire so I can order one.
I don't get the tires on this build. They are way too new and also pretty ugly. Either period correct Panaracers or Tioga or Ritchey, even Michelin, or something modern =with more air volume. Wheels are also pretty basic, even if I appreciate the Bontrager BCX rims. A good wheelset with Parallax hubs and Mavic rims can't be too expensive. Otherwise, really nice. Cheers.
Well... I suppose there are people who like these older hardtails.
Imagine of everyone wanted one....
Imagine how hard it would be to find one for a reasonable price....
So yeah.... I suppose this stuff is OK for Boomers, but I bet all the young folk want the latest carbon, hi-tech, hydraulic-disc whizzbang stuff.
Seriously.... Stop putting out these videos. People are going to buy up all the older Kona, GT and Fischer frames!
Do we want that? Do we?
😂
Lol 😂
Please pull the tires on properly, both are on the wobble.
There is tire assembly paste for this, or soapy water.
It would also be appreciated if you used newer brakes and swapped the shifters for new ones.
Its a restoration... someone never road with thumb shifters...
@@CSIPSD It's a rebuild, not a restoration.
It would be better with the new brakes and the new shifters would make shifting smoother.
I also have V brakes on my 90s MTB, and I also have magazine brake pads on them.
The brakes are better than the old ones.
@@Nost2682 rebuild? What parts did he replace minus the handlebars and tires? Lol
@@CSIPSD Read the video title.
He also says in the video that he would like to change something on the bike.
Sadly again another kiddy frame. Werent there men over 6 feet back then?? What did they ride?? Probably not such a kids bike…..
Lol it fits me great 😁 I guess I’m ride kiddy bikes
ion like tha yellow fork i like a red or black
That fork did not exist in 1991. Neither did threadless headsets. You let it stay while you replace a parallel-push V brake with a cantilever? Are you insane? You update the handlebar while you make the front brake vintage? What are you smoking? You replaced the grips with bolt-on Oury (did not exist in 1991) while you take away a perfectly functional front brake? You know what? You could sell that nice V brake to me. I'll put it to use on an old steel GT.
Why are u yelling?
Honestly, these videos are decreasing in effort with each iteration. It's starting to feel like your videos are just filler between the UA-cam ads.
Thanks for the feedback Ted. What did I not do that you would have liked to have seen me do different on this one?
@@oldshovel Lacing up a set of higher end rims, sourcing some vintage XTR components, perhaps some Magura hydraulic rim brakes. Really anything that isn't just cleaning components to elevator music. When I look back at your older videos, like your Ritchey Ascent, you were sincere and putting tons of thought to what you were building.
That's fair. On this bike I did look for different components, 7-speed XT wheels and cranks were what I specifically wanted,
to match the shifters and the XT front brakes I was able to find, but vintage parts are not always easy to find at reasonable prices... but I could have perhaps done more. I also wish I had a deeper parts bin... That's why I mentioned at the end I don't think I am done with this one. The Ritchey Ascent was the same way, I did a first, rat bike build and then gave it some extra love. In any case, thank you for the feedback.
@@oldshovel I appreciate the honesty and your willingness to respond
Wow ! I have only ever seen one of those before. a fella special ordered it. It was red also but was a 95-96 maybe.
Sweet GT! I still have my teal 1989 GT Timberline with Biopace and the rear brake strangely mounted underneath the chain stays. A bike of its time for sure. I like your Cyclone. Great video.
I have a 1991 GT Zaskar that I built back in 1991 with XT components. I believed some Pro's back then preferred the steel frame GT's.
And these young whipper snappers think internal cable routing is a new thing...
And dropper posts? Yep. We had them back then too! Just took a little more to drop them.
Love your videos.
I'm working on a smoked salmon pink Tequesta currently, and am debating on going 1X in the front. For the trails it would ride on, and around town, the big and small chain rings don't get used much anyway.
Absolute shame to put a 98 fork, front v-brake and riser bars on a 91 gem like that. Period Correct build would be SO much more appropriate.
Sweet......Love the Tiquilla sunrise coloration. Great vibe...........
I have a GT timberline and I love it, hello from Mexico Mr. oldshovel
that back brake cable setup is crazy! Never saw that before.
No Canadian nickels in the grips?!
Awesome bike and work. Greetings from Argentina
