15:15 Someone whos played this game series for almost 9 years. I can confirm that motion controls are the closes to mouse like input for a controller believe it or not. Its not exactly as hard as people make it out to be too but truthfully you probably could challenge someone who would be using mouse input and that user would not be able to tell the difference on what they went up against. Mouse is still the superior input but Motion is not far behind.

@@Saki10001 Well, I don’t think a “random semi-famous overwatch addict” could give more than “half assed recognition”. The reasoning for why he has no respect for Splatoon is explained within your very comment that acknowledges this dismissive demeanour.
15:44 - Motion controls constantly get this kind of flak without anyone ever actually trying it or at the very least, researching the control scheme Motion controls may not be exactly 1-to-1 but it does indeed close the gap significantly I precision lol
Best video I saw in it was Solarlights video, something like “controllers don’t suck for tf2”. It’s an extremely good video that shows the pros and cons in a fantastic way. Wish he would give it a watch
I would really love to see flats look into a competitive tournament of Splatoon just to get an idea because the depth of the game really is deep and it makes for a really fun competitive environment, from leaderboards to different tiers of teams; there's a lot that was made by the community.
I gave it a fair shake when Splatoon 2 came out and I hated it. Weird since the gyro in Zelda and Mario was way better. (the aiming not the stupid shrine puzzles and gesture controls)
A thing this video unfortunately did not mention is the in my opinion amazing singleplayer campaign Splatoon 3 has, teaching you about the game's fundementals and giving you a safer space to get used to Splatoons unique environment and controls. People seriously underestimate how intuitive gyro aiming feels once you give it a shot. Also Splatoon 3 has DLC adding a singleplayer ROGUELIKE mode of all things, which I think was very challenging and very fun.
Flats said that the only way gyro aiming could gain traction would be if a new generation of kids grew up with it and I agree, but I think this is exactly what is happening for nintendo kids. I'm 20 years old and raised on nintendo games. They've consistently been pushing gyro aim ever since the ocarina of time remake on 3ds (gyro aim kinda broke some of the minigames in this game because it made aiming so much easier). I was 11 when splatoon 1 came out. It has gyro aiming enabled by default when you launch the game for the first time, and it just feels so right for the game. I even remember turning gyro aim off as a joke when hanging out with friends to laugh at how bad twin stick controls are. Fast forward to this year after not playing splatoon since the first game, I was curious and set up Quake with gyro aim through steam input. After a couple of games I was able to hold my own against mouse players while exploring new movement possibilities with the left stick. It will never replace mouse aim, but gyro aim is without a doubt the future of console FPS, it's only a matter of time until enough kids grow up with it.
And the argument about casual audience also falls flat because, a casual audience is really down to try anything. I remember laughing at it when I saw it on overwatch on the switch, and then I saw that it was just better than twin stick (at least for me, it felt extremely natural)
agreed! i was.. i wanna say 14 or 15 when splat1 came out and i got it for xmas and personally hadn't had much gaming experience beyond some nintendo games, so i just used the motion controls. I've played 2 and 3 and still use motion controls, they're great imo.
I picked up splatoon at the third game and could never stomach controller based games because of how unintuitive they felt compared to mouse so I actually feel much more comfortable with motion controls lol. It’s a bit of a learning curve if you’re used to controller but you get so much more precision
15:15 Your little rant on the only way motion will catch on already happened. Splatoon's almost a decade old and those kids who grew up with it have become accustomed to gyro, in fact it's the #1 feature any shooter on the Switch needs to add in order for it to succeed on the platform due to the demand of the player base. Doom added it due to the Switch, Fortnite added it due to the Switch. It is the ideal input method for the entire Nintendo side of gaming thanks to Splatoon's influence. I know because I was that generation. It's my preferred input for shooters.
fr, really annoying to see people so confidently rant smth like this without actually looking into the subject and researching. makes them look silly ash
Splatoon 3 commentator here. Super glad folks outside of the Splatoon community are starting to see the game even after its Final Fest. It has so many great elements to it including a diversified weapon pool, PvE horde mode, great grassroots/community scene and much more. I highly encourage folks to try it out and learn it - even just the gyro-controls aspect of the game makes it feel so unique compared to other shooters on the market.
I've been a sneaky fan of splatoon since 1. This entire series got me spoiled on gyro to the point where I found a way to get gyro working on OW for ps5... splatoon will always have special place in my heart.
I have to point out that it's not really hyperbole to say that gyro controls can have as high of a ceiling as mouse and keyboard; it's genuinely the best way to play Splatoon and I could see it be a plausible option for any shooter game if someone really wants to play with a controller. It's legit.
Not to mention that in splatoon I can have a batshit crazy tetra spawn behind you so have the ability to immediately flick to them with motion controls is a very underrated thing about the game
15:30 I promise you, it is WAY closer than it might feel. When I first got into PC games, it was not hard to transition from motion because, for me at least, they both feel the exact same. Gyro aiming is honestly the solution for the aim assist debate and I am not kidding. Sadly I don't think it's gonna solve the issue quickly because Microsoft refuses to put gyro on their controllers, a lot of games only put gyro options on switch (shoutouts steam for gyro on steaminput emulating mouse). Anyways, not trying to force you to play the game, just wanted to defend my hyperfixation.
The trick shots I have seen some Splatoon players do are things that would be difficult to pull of with a mouse and keyboard, plus the sticks still being usable is something that most people don't understand how good it is unless they have experience with using them, 180 degree turns with a single button press and motion controls on top of that for precise movement.
Gyro aiming is peak. You get the ergonomics of a controller and most of the precision of a mouse. The controls are not even hard to learn, it’s just that people refuse to learn them on principle, because the word “motion controls” have such a stigma. I think the dismissal of Splatoon represents what’s wrong with gamers these days, they constantly complain about how stagnant the industry is while they look at games that are actually innovative and go “no thanks” just because they look different. They don’t actually want brand new concepts and ideas, they just like to bitch.
I’m over watch players when any charecters is meta “this is annoying I do t like to play it” he’ll even if rein is meta they can still find mercy players complaining about being solo shattered
Dismissing gyro controls basically right off the bat is kinda closed minded I've been playing with motion for 8 years, most of splatoon's life span, and I even use it in fortnite While it isn't the best for fortnite's combat after gyro gets reworked heavily, it is amazing for building and editing It does bridge the gap between mouse and keyboard way more than that of aim assist, and instead of it being a computer program that bridges the gap, it's your actual skill Motion does take time to learn and a decent bit to master, but it is amazing once you can play it The only flaw with motion controls is that it is sadly stuck to certain games on certain platforms, and more importantly, those with disabilities may not be able to move the controller
19:06 "Its held back by a lot of things" *is currently one of the most popular games on the console ever, breaking records on how fast it sold on the first 3 months of release*
That’s a very ignorant point, Flats. Gyro had been in the splatoon series since the first game, and gyro exists in other titles, like the legend of Zelda.
It's pretty ironic that a lot of overwatch creator's editor's put splatoon music in a lot of their videos, yet neither the creator or editor plays the games 😅. Just shows you how good some of the music is 👌
Like of a specific video??? I don't remeber each video, but flats, emong, wanted, and questron (the four I subed to) all put music on some videos back to back. They used ebb and flow, acid hues, and ink me up (the ones I can remeber off the top of my head) ua-cam.com/video/WHvMJJAZFoI/v-deo.htmlsi=uzkTZ6JmFSnzLdKi I remeber this one because it was a day after grandfest and I was still really emotional over it
I'd call myself a casual gamer, and the motion controls for Splatoon are the best way to play. They have improved it over the 3 games, and will surely improve in the next.
Ok, I gotta be real here. It’s incredibly ignorant of Flats here to say that Mouse is straight up better than Gyro when he has never actually experienced it or played against it. It really does close the gap between controller and M&K and the only reason it’s not more popular is because of ignorant people are so hesitant to even give it a chance. The learning curve is not even as steep as people make it out to be.
Learning gyro isn't as big of an issue as you are making it out to be. People also have to learn and practice with mouse and standard controller aiming. Learning something brand new just for 1 game isn't an issue either. People do that all the time with many different games eg. Building in Fortnite or tech/game knowledge that doesn't transfer to other games. What makes you think that "Joe who just got back from is 9-5 working as a mechanic" is gonna be any good with mouse or traditional controller aim. Gyro is incredibly fun and rewarding, it makes me wish more games had it. It is much closer to mouse aim than you think, it is certainly closer that aim assist is. It doesn't even take that long to learn, it didn't take any longer than other forms of aiming. You're underestimating how many casual Splatoon players there are, even after going on and on about how the switch isn't built for competitive. There's definitely going to be a heap of causal players in a game that sold around 12 million copies The game is very welcoming and noob friendly. There is a single-player campaign, 4 player co-op PVE mode, and a single player roguelike DLC. There is a ton of stuff outside multiplayer pvp to keep people interested and engaged.
Comp splatoon is really confusing, though. Especially if you don't know the mechanics. I'm all for Flats watching more Splatoon stuff (like Chara's video about how Nintendo destroyed Brella) but comp might not be the place to start.
This is one of my biggest complaints about the video he watched. It barely shows how cool it is to actually PLAY the game. There isn't one part of the video that makes me go "Oh damn, that was kinda sick." When splatoon is FULL of those moments, even as a casual player. He showed a bunch of the base mechanics, but never how they all weave together in an actual match.
I've said since Splatoon 1 that gyro controls, while they have a somewhat steep learning curve for people that aren't accustomed to it, are as close as you can get to mouse aim precision without making the jump to mkb. It's intuitive and frankly can allow a controller player to compete with mouse players in most games. Is it as good, absolutely not, but it's enough of a jump in precision to make it possible. It's not a case of the middle ground ending up as a worst of both worlds, if anything it's getting most of the precision that mouse has while keeping the stick movement and ergonomics of controllers. It's frankly criminal that more games don't have it implemented as an option, even if it wouldn't be the most used (the most criminal being OW, which natively has it for the switch port but not for any other port).
Gyro on overwatch is actually pretty freaking good. I remember having to swap controllers at some point and my temporary backup was practically a dedicated “everything except splatoon and overwatch” controller. Honestly made me pick up paladins, so yay ig
@-cactus.raven- All the more reason why it's criminal that it's stuck on switch. Like they literally have the functionality implemented, it's such a shame it's not on the PC version (or any other version even)
Blizzard not implementing gyro for ow2 PS5 still blows my mind considering the switch version has had it for years. I was able to transition to diamond easily on PC with gyro controls and never felt like I was at a disadvantage.
as someone who actually played a load of splatoon 1 back in the day, i gotta say people sleep on motion controls took me a while to get used to them but it unironically felt amazing to use
Believe it or not, kids who were raised on Splatoon and continue to learn and play it, absolutely destroy anyone using traditional joysticks. I remember going to a convention with Splatoon 2 available to play and I got into a lobby with some little kids. I used traditional joysticks and i thought maybe i would go easy on them. I got absolutely rolled and these kids ran literal circles around me. Don't underestimate Splatoon motion control players. It's the only way to play at the top of the game.
Especially during dive meta Jesus u had like tetra who dashed like 4 fucking times and was in ur face then not then behind a corner and now they have a shark heading for your ass then the get 4 rolls again. Paired with stamper which had a one shot combo an ultra that made you jump around like Spider-Man incredibly quickly getting all around you and then you die to a cross map crab tank that’s from fucking miles away and then wiper who has one of the fastest movements in the game constantly on you. Playing joysticks in that meta was hell even as a stamper main
Motion controls for shooters are becoming far more common, even on PC. In TF2 you hear about players who use motion controls with a flick stick and dominate lobbies
Omgggg flats is such a lil hater-tot when it comes to motion controls. I am not a switch player, nor will I ever be, but idk man I feel like ur ego kicked in a lil bit there
Sadly the fucking trouble the devs went to make botw and totk look that good on the switch is something that can’t be ignored like look at scarlet and violet
@legamofz-nc6gx pokemon games have never looked as good as other games on the same console or handheld. It's been a point of contention for a long time. Look at monster hunter rise. Look at mortal combat 11 vs mortal combat 1 on switch. The port company was very lazy, that's not the switches fault in fairness
I feel like that last point about the Switch being uncompetitive is a non-point. Splatoon Is a competitive game with ranked lobbies in addition to the casual mode. Any game that has a professional scene is gonna have sweaties queueing up for Ranked
Every time people say something like this,,, I remember competitive board games are a thing. I’m not saying this to shit on anyone, but if fucking Scrabble can be competitive why not x game on y console
Splatoon is a competitive game played by both casuals and lots of sweats and comp players. The Switch however is a console marketed towards casual gamers of all ages. Competitive communities have and will develop for competitive games on the switch. But they’re probably gonna remain smaller compared to many other games. Maybe not in % of the active playerbase but in raw numbers.
I got into Overwatch because a lot of my friends started playing it, and dropped Splatoon for over a year. A few weeks ago, I decided to play it again and holy hell. Splatoon was so goated and so unique. It’s way better than people give it credit for. I used to play it so much when I was younger and now I’m getting back into it. Best shooter out there.
I, already see that everyone else is defending Splatoon 3, and to an extent, the entire franchise, and I am very proud of us, so I’ll just bring up a point that I found funny: Splatoon 3 may have been disappointing in some aspects, but at least we actually have PVE, the entire selling point of your “sequel”, lol.
14:50 We all know these two words turns EVERYONE off from this game, but the wild thing is that it really does make all the difference in an accurate console shooter!
It turns of people who arent smart enough to do two things at once yeah. For some people having to move both the controller and the sticks is apparently too much of a load on their brain
Also, something positive about Splatoon I haven’t even read about in the comment section as of writing this is that all Splatoon games are full price games where you get what you buy. No micro transactions. Like, sure there are Amiibo figurines and 1 paid DLC with additional singleplayer story content for Splatoon 2 & 3 each but that’s it. And all that shit that you get from those purchases is purely cosmetic in multiplayer. When you buy Splatoon 2 & 3 you get a finished game with servers that are gonna be running for years to come. Splatoon 1 servers are already down but fans have created a way to make the game playable immediately after they went offline. It’s still worth buying Splatoon 1 if you have a Wii U and you wanted to experience the first game and its exclusive content.
I play Overwatch, Apex, and Splatoon very regularly and I will disagree with a number of things in this video. First off, gyro aim (with the thumbstick, that is crucial) is absolutely better than you make it out to be. Yes it takes time to get used to, but once you have it down it is arguably as good as keyboard and mouse, I am not joking in the slightest. I started with Splatoon 1 when I was a teenager so you could argue I grew up with it to a degree, but I find gyro aim a MUST for console FPS's, I cannot play on a controller without it. You simply need to try it to get a feel for it and KEEP AT IT. You don't give up learning how to ride a bike just because you fall off of it the first time. And in terms of performance on the Switch, Splatoon is made with the Switch in mind, so it runs SHOCKINGLY well on that system. It's not perfect, but its absolutely playable. Also, the video didn't cover everything that is so special about Splatoon. It didn't mention the actually impressive story and worldbuilding that is done in the game. Every detail in Splatoon matters, and every object placed is intentional. The hub world is a great example of this. Subtle nods to the world the Inklings live in, the places they go, the way they communicate, the lives they live... the game makes you feel like a teenager with the freedom to go out and hang out with your friends at the mall or park or something. The sense of freedom and artistic creativity is palpable. And the story is really amazing too, both in and out of the story mode(s). Not to mention the events held every month is super cool and keeps the game feeling fresh. Splatfests are like one giant party held for a weekend every couple months and they are always so fun. Colorful lights, incredible music, the hub world changes, and you compete over a theme exclusive to the Splatfest! Last month's Splatfest was "What would you be in a fantasy world?" with the options of Wizards vs. Knights vs. Ninjas. Also the music! Oh my god the music!!! It's really freaking good, the whole discography of Splatoon's soundtracks deserves awards, easily. So many leitmotifs and such a wide variety of music as well. Yes, the squidling vocals sounds a bit silly, but there are some DAMN good singers behind those tracks. Any song with Marina (an Idol from Splatoon 2) is worth listening to. Anyways, I think the game is worth trying, even if you might think it's not worth your time, there is so much good here that I think running through the story mode at the very least is a great introduction to the game and is worth it just for that alone. Oh and also? There is no voice chat (except for the nintendo app with friends but no one uses that) so the toxicity is actually next to zero (squidbagging is still a thing), so it truly feels like a breath of fresh air compared to Overwatch. Give it a shot, worst case scenario is you played another game. (Thanks for reading all of this if you get here, sorry for the ramble
You don't understand how bad I want Splatoon on PC just so I can play it with more of my friends cause most of them don't have switches. The motion controls sound really bad in theory cause it makes you think about the Wii motion controls but its actually really good. You're not supposed to move the camera all the time with motion controls but for micro movements. Like your shots are slightly off so you move your control a bit so you actually hit the enemy. Stick is still the main way you move the camera but motion is a bonus that helps you aim better. Its also very fun.
I think motion controls are really good and waaayyy superior to twin stick but just like Flats said, most people turn them off because they can’t be bothered to learn a whole new scheme just because a random-ass game they’re playing for the first time. It’s worth switching if you keep coming back to the game or if you don’t have much trouble adapting to new controls but if you’re just casually playing the game most players won’t hold it against you for having them off. Just know that you might get your ass kicked by a bunch of motion players who know how to aim. And of course players who have never played shooters before usually keep them on by default because it’s the default controls and they gotta learn the controls either way. Whenever motion controls exist in a game I immediately turn them on and turn aim assist off (because aim assist + gyro feels ass to play with at least for me) and it’s way better than twin stick even though no game outside of Nintendo has implemented them as well as Splatoon that I know of. Edit: Someone mentioned the singleplayer campaign and I do agree: Every Splatoon game has 1 singleplayer campaign (And the last 2 games got 1 paid DLC story campaign each.) that are actually good at teaching fundamentals and are great for new players both new to shooters and coming from other shooters to learn all the controls including gyro and game mechanics. Even if ya might have em off during matches if you wanna try learning gyro, try to beat the campaign with gyro always on. Edit 2: Yada yada yada every shooter on Switch now adds motion to the switch ports because that’s necessary for those games to be successful on the switch purely because of Nintendo‘s push for gyro controls. Splatoon is already almost a decade old yada yada. (Someone else explained it in more detailed in a more recent comment than this one.)
I kinda would like to know if Flats would give the game a shot if it was on other platforms. Because I do believe that the whole Switch exclusivity thing is the main thing keeping Splatoon from growing in popularity outside of Japan exponentially.

I grew up on Motion Controls. Wii Kid. Wii U Kid. Been playing Splatoon for a long while. I can’t play with any form of stick controls, even if there’s aim assist.
Idk, I feel like half of this just focused on "adults don't want to play a kids game", which came off as abrasive. Would rather that 7 minute portion focus more on the actual game instead of trying to explain to me why I don't play it.
@@lavitz3045 Perhaps, although if he didn’t address this, it would seem as if he was trying to pretend it was not an issue. It is a real vulnerability of our game. The crossover I never knew I wanted I love splatoon ever since the Wii U and overwatch since 2016. Both the video and flats make a great argument on why Splatoon can’t be more popular
I liked your reaction but yours and everyone's reaction towards motion controls is exactly why splatoon isnt main stream. Aim-assist was made as a crutch since controllers couldn't do what a mouse could do in terms of precision. but now that controllers can be as precise as mouse, people have gotten too used to aim assist to even consider it as an option.
Splatoon 1 is what i played before Overwatch came out. The motion controls were the perfect way of play, Splatoon also taught me team team based objectives which when Overwatch came out it was just a natural fit on knowing what to do and how to play the game. Overwatch and Splatoon shares quite a bit of stuff with each other
I have never seen flats as more of a pessimist than in this video, especially on the motion controls front. They're on by default, and they are incredible compared to other games
You don’t need 4K 120fps to have a fun time. Everyone loved the Wii and it was underpowered compared to other consoles. Look at the switch sales, it outsold Sony and Microsoft, so it seems Nintendo is doing something right.
They didn’t even get into the clothing, salmon run, dlc or even campaign for splatoon. As someone who has played plenty of overwatch and splatoon I will say I enjoy splatoon much more regardless of it being on the switch for many reasons. I wish flats would look into it more instead of just shutting it down for no reason.
anyone who doubts the validity of what hes saying solarlight a top ranked team fortress 2 player uses gyro aiming and a technique called flicksticking where he uses half of the controller for movement and the gyro controls for aiming allowing him to airstrafe better and do movement you just would not be able to on MnK
SPLATOON 3 MENTIONED!?!?!? Splatoon 3 is the love of my life, pretty much. I have 1,000+ hours in the game, I've cried real tears over it, It's a shame the western world always ignores it and It makes me really sad. Genuinely splatoon could give so many people such a new refreshing time playing a shooter. Its such a love letter to what makes us human when it comes to the lore. I do just wish that some CoD bros or Overwatch players would like- even consider playing it I feel like some people who look at the game, and they've never cared for it really have no reason to dog on splatoon. I really do think everyone should just try it at least once. Who knows, maybe you'll like it afterall. (Also to add. I've been playing on sticks with this games for my entire time of playing. Sticks are more welcoming for people like me, casual players. Trust me. There is a HUGE open door for causal players. You're not required to do motion.)
This video really interested me because Splatoon was my first ever fps game and I was a very casual gamer before. I started playing Overwatch on the PlayStation in 2017, so I feel learning the motion controls in Splatoon really helped me with the console fps version of Overwatch as my second shooter game. Both games have a very colorful art/map design with fast paced game styles and interesting abilities. The community driven aspects of Splatoon like the 'Splatfest' events and the interactions/drawings you see in the main lobby are some of my favorite things about Splatoon.
It was very interesting seeing you watch this, as I actually do play this game competitively and have an absolute blast doing so (Been playing since the first one) The only take you had here that I disagreed with was the one you had on motion, cause I have seen players on PC in recent years swap to the motion control scheme in several games place in high level ranks. The only downside on it on PC is really setting it up since it isn't readily available on most games unless you want to go through a very painful set up through steam. I can also play on Mouse & Keyboard and honestly getting good w/ motion made me better w/ Mouse and Keyboard as well as well. I just prefer the comfort of a controller a little more that's just a personal preference. Even if you don't have the willingness to try the game right now, I hope you do in the future at some point for just maybe a small thing or even the next game on a better system since its pretty obvious that its coming its just a matter of when. Especially since you're a large content creator here on YT I am willing to bet a lot of the higher level player base would gladly assist in teaching the game as well. I have been getting some of my friends to play the game casually and my advice starting off is to 1. Always play the story mode, it helps in learning a lot basic fundamentals of the game. and 2. For when learning motion controls start at 0 motion 0 stick, then fine tune it to where you like to have it. Pretty much has worked for everyone I told, but I know motion is not for everyone I know motion sickness is still a thing. Anyways to close this comment, I want to say thank you for putting eyes on this game me and many others enjoy so much :)
Played so many shooters growing up, all the way from Counter-Strike 1.4 before Steam even existed, and I was pretty good. The shooters were fun, but Splatoon is the only shooter I've actually fallen in love with and crave more. Was skeptical of motion controls, but when you master it (took me around >~100hrs), it feels way more chill than mouse and keyboard. Motion feels SO fast and so tight. Sure, mkb is still king, but I will never play a shooter with only sticks anymore. I can also lounge back, get a couple of games in, and finish for the night. Splatoon loads up fast (I usually don't even exit out of the Splatoon game) and you get into games quick, but with PC shooters I usually still have to sit more forward.
Splatoon also has a shockingly good story mode for an online shooter game. It really helps players slowly adjust to the gameplay of the game, especially with gyro. I also at first found the whole gyro control scheme strange, but after completing the story mode i was hooked and ready for actual online play.
I dont agree with 18:28 entirely. Sure power is a problem but just because Overwatch runs like shit on the switch doesn't mean that Splatoon has the same problem. Battles are locked at 60fps and only the main hub city area place (Splatsville) is locked to 30fps. Also there is a story mode which acts as a tutorial in a sense. There you basically get a single player campaign which also teaches you how to play and incorporates the basic mechanics frequently to help you build that muscle memory. The game even tells you to check that out first (THE LORE IS CRAZY). Its also a great way to practice motion. Most of the veteren players still play the story mode because it is fun. Its not even that long.
I play splatoon since the start on the wii u, its a good game and is fun, the motion controls (which i saw someone on twitter recreate with a mouse and sony control, reinventing motions controls) are honestly really nice, and unlike overwatch, splatoon runs actually really well because it’s Nintendo’s product and they have the keys to the kingdom when making a nintendo game, which means it runs really well despite the older hardware (though see switch 2 excitement for online community for readiness for an upgrade) nintendo is kings of making older hardware work and look really amazing, but yeah huge agree on what the video said about the annoying online thing of disconnects, but its a real fun game and a real fun world to get into. Im excited for the next system but im fine with waiting until the end of their fiscal year. Im hoping people stop only looking at just ports and actually look at what nintendo puts out themselves. (Though i do agree to an extent i wish it was more able to handle more stuff, im pretty sure the next console will, hopefully)
My only gripe of Splatoon 3 is the grind. Like say one wants that Cap of legend (A salmon run reward) Well that will easily net you the same amount of playtime it takes to get 3 gold guns in overwatch. Splatoon 1 and 2 were not as grindy and rewards were more earned by leveling up finishing the main story and dlc the Amiibo challenges. Other than that the gameplay is awesome the Splatfest are cool. (The grandest especially) Wish you were there it was that amazing.
@@yoku_UwU If you're unsure, you could just use the free trial or one month membership. That's not to say it's perfect or anything. But it's at least mostly functional. Plus, all the content is now in the game. Every weapon now has two kits, and each class got a new weapon. The new stages are a lot better designed than the launch ones too.
15:44 I feel like motion controls always get this shit from people who haven't even really given them a chance. If you do actually give them a chance, then hell yeah, you can get as accurate as a mouse. I've seen people in splatoon with such good aim they controller flick me with a charger from across the map.
right!!! i mentioned this in my own comment but the skill ceiling for motion control players is baffling sometimes. i don't want to sound negative at all but i really do feel like some pc players have this kind of complex and truly truly believe mouse and keyboard is just the better option no matter what. some games are just different, and just because *you* can't work with the mechanics doesn't mean hundreds of people haven't already got it down 😭
I play a lot of shooters, like Halo, TF2, Overwatch, still playing a ton of Overwatch, (ON PC TO BE CLEAR LOL) but Splatoon on the Wii U was my first. I think Splatoon is a lot more casual friendly than this video let on, but the skill ceiling is incredibly high. I went from a casual using stick aim to a motion controls player in Splatoon 2 and I started watching pros and tourneys like I do for Overwatch and Smash. Splatoon is a beautiful series which I love a lot, both for its singleplayer and multiplayer, but I do think it's held back by the hardware it's stuck to. Nintendo is never going to give it to PC so I just hope the Switch 2 lets this series flourish the way it has the potential to.
Motion controls are amazing and it annoys me to hear people dismiss them when they've never tried them. In my opinion, Splatoon feels 10 times better to play with motion controls.
I dont understand the hate for motion controls when you don't play the game, nor a switch to see how far the control scheme has come. If this is wii era motion controls, yes it wouldn't be able to keep up, but it's not. It's been over a decade of refinement. I know you come from overwatch, but the difference here is the game was made for the Switch unlike overwatch. There's a huge difference in quality when Nintendo makes a game for their console vs getting a port.
On the overwatch for switch topic, there is a setting to cross platform play with other consoles but its players are far from lacking competitively. I've started at ow1 season 2 on Xbox, tried PC to play with friends at their request, now I play with PC friends in qp regularly solely on switch. I've had to provide evidence that I could kick their arses with no aim assist while on switch to join them but I did. Maybe we should all acknowledge it doesn't matter what system someone plays on but how they play 👍
Motion controls are the best, once you get the hang of it, there is not no more brain space required than a mouse or a stick. Also motion controls are much more intuitive to people then he makes them out to be.
as someone that's played both splatoon and overwatch since 2017, i feel like its hard to even consider playing one when you've only known the other. the video does an amazing job at selling splatoons concepts but its so much of a unique concept that it's genuinely hard to ever to convey to someone, you just have to play it yourself to get the appeal. that and i really do believe that people let their preconceptions dictate how they feel abt a game before ever looking into it. for one, it being on the switch has never been a problem for me or anyone i know, despite the switch being behind hardware-wise, splatoon runs perfectly fine. the only issue ive ever had is the actual online service disconnecting me on occasion. and as for the motion controls, they're not as hard as you make it sound, my 7 year old sister played splatoon just fine with them without ever having used it before 😭. and the skill ceiling for motion control players is absolutely insane. there's a reason that i've gotten frustrated in splatoon and dropped it for months, but not overwatch. splatoon is just so incomparable to any other shooter game. i love both these games dearly even though they make me feel insane 🩷
@@Cool-Vest I mean, it was bold to even think that there was a possible timeline where an Overwatch 2 player is humble enough to give a Splatoon game an honest chance. While I do agree that not everyone is gonna learn a new mechanic on a whim, but I think you're also underestimating when games are appealing enough to the player, they would normally be down to learn just about anything. Like I even know people that never thought that they would play a Splatoon game, and now they play with a high rank in the game with motion controls after also saying that they would never care to learn motion controls until they watched a competitive Splatoon 3 game. Compassion and hype is one hell of a motivator brother. P.S. Flats da GOAT
15:19 Motion controls in Splatoon *only* control where you're aiming slightly. The camera and movement is all still normal buttons. *and you can turn motion off*
I think your video is very good! I loved actually hearing someone being more critical of the game since it opens a lot of new viewing angles :] that being said I think the only real gripe I had with it is your dismissal of motion controls. No hyperbole, they genuinely are the future of controller aiming in games like these aim assist will always have issues, whether its too strong, too weird, too intrusive, and overall it feels like a necessary "crutch" of sorts that the game needs in order to feel enjoyable Motion controls with some practice (that ANY aiming method demands anyway, including mouse and stick aiming) are genuinely a stellar solution as there is no "the game is doing the aiming for you" arguments to be had when 100% of the aiming is player controlled, and unlike sticks, the skill ceiling is the same sort of "basically infinite" that mouse has since the gyro is (nearly) as fast as your hands are Obviously its gonna take a while to catch on with other studios and companies before they start implimenting it more, but I think on the whole dismissing gyro like this is a bit disingenuous, especially when again, right stick + aim assist is not exactly that great a solution in the first place also its not JUST gyro, that would suck. Its basically using the right stick for macro aim (do I look to my left or my right), and the gyro is then used for micro aim (do I aim at the person's head who is on my right, or do I aim for the explosive barrel that is next to them) sorry for the big comment, just wanted this out, but again I think the video was great otherwise and I do agree with a lot of your points!
To anyone confused, motion controls are not necessarily like what you picture in your mind. It's not the days of the Wii Mote or Playstation Move where you're waggling it all over the place. In Splatoon, it's for making minute adjustments on the fly with your aim. For the most part, you're making the broader swivels with your dual control sticks. When you're aiming for a kill or above or below a ledge, you're using motion controls to ease into the movement.
As someone who has played Overwatch for years I only got into Spaltoon as a series when 3 came out and instantly fell in love with it and feel it's something every Overwatch player should at least try if they have a switch (especially if they're burnt out of OW). The motion controls are strange to get used to, but god damn are they amazing to use in practice, and while they're not as precise as MnK (I don't think anything will be) they're incredibly close and you often forget that Splatoon doesn't have an aim assist, even if you're like me and didn't grow up aiming with a controller.
One notable highlight of Splatoon is the customization as well. You can customize every single piece of your clothing and its stats to fit yourself, which allows you to test and mash together different gameplay styles. Along with the different weapon variety, it's overall a visually appealing game with a bunch of customization and self expression. It's no wonder why so many people in the community make and post their own personas that're from the game.
The motion controls are actually so good you'll be blown away. It sounds like a downside but the aim is actually on the level of a keyboard and mouse and makes the game tons of fun. The skill gap is less harsh than it seems too, it's pretty easy to catch onto after a couple of days or even a few hours, the game is tons of fun. I'd love to see a flats splatoon video I think you'd really enjoy it genuinely. Also, the game runs amazing on switch, there is little to no hardware downside with how well the game is optimized, so the hardware is nothing to worry about in terms of performance.
I'd day motion and mice are more similar historically than people realise. Of course we had times where camera control wasn't even much of a thing, people adjusted in games where it was implemented, but then had to adjust once mouse camera control rose - people previously did nope out to it bc they were used to keyboard cameras (on PC ofc), but now there are many people who have never even had the thought come across them that at some point, mice were not often used, yet people adjusted in games were it was implemented until it became default! People also view motion as "flail arms", but at least in Splatoon's case, there's expectations, like that you should be turning pretty much just your wrists, or design implementations that I assume came from some testing time (like since the right stick is actually enabled when motion is, there's an expectation that you use it for larger turns, but it's only for horizontal aim as vertical aiming is disabled when using it, and motion takes the role of vertical aiming & finer aiming/tracking - those decisions weren't random I assume). Those expectations unfortunately aren't told to you directly (some of this sort of info is hidden behind random dev interviews iirc?? tf??), but they're there, and I think they wanted it to be an experience where a player doesn't just nope out on a game but instead *really* gives it a chance (though this doesn't work out for many, but not all - e.g. me I guess? I've always liked to stick to a pool of games rather than get almost anything that even slightly catches my eye). In the end though, does every shooter now need a motion control option? Probably not! Can many shooters benefit from it at least being an option? With the right implementations! I feel like Fortnite is a game that implemented it not well, though it's the only other shooter I've tried with motion & I played ~10 hours total years ago, maybe it's better? There's probably another shooter that does it well, but it's "unfortunately" not as simple as "give them the thing that lets them flail their arms!"!
Motion controls don’t work for 90% of games. I feel a good point that should’ve been added for why they are implemented is because aim assist would actively detract from the focus of the game, which is painting the ground and walls for movement. The real value of Splatoon is not the kills, but the movable area on the ground and walls, and having the game strip that control from you to focus on enemies would destroy is #1 movement mechanic. This is why motion controls work for the game, on top of the heavy optimization Nintendo has done to make motion controls feel intuitive for a game like this (unlike motion controls on Fortnite or especially Overwatch, which are terrible)
Fortnite improved motion controls DRASTICALLY in the patch that added them to the Playstation and PC. So much so that i think Fortnite is currently the gold standard for gyro implementation
motion controls are amazing in this game and when done right they do in fact rival a mouse and keyboard. It genuinly feels better and more immersive even for old joe
Also by the way that statement you made about the switch not being a competitive platform at least in the world of Splatoon and especially super smash Bros there are very big and competitive communities to these games maybe you would learn a thing or two if you actually seen Splatoon tournament.
Also the main thing right Gyro is so good is because it combines the nice comfortable and familiarity of controller with the position that you can get via a mouse. The only reason you don’t understand is because you’ve never tried it before you shouldn’t just think that some thing is worse than what you’re used to because you’ve never tried it before. That’s like saying that Chinese food is bad even though you’ve never tried it before you can’t have A critical opinion on something especially when you haven’t even tried it yet.
I will also say that Splatoon is Great for competitive and casual players. There are lotta casual people who play the game just because it’s fun something you’ve probably never heard of. Not everything has to be competitive. One thing that I will also note is that the video didn’t cover all the different kinds of molds that are available in Splatoon it’s not just what you usually see which is turf or they’re also more competitive objective based modes like rainmaker in which you bring a slightly Beefed up weapon to a podium ( Protect the VIP )splat zones which is all about keeping control of a zone (King of the hill) Tower control where you have to stay on top of a tower that will go along a path taking you to the enemies spawn and when you reach there the game is over (Payload), And clam blitz which is the most unique of all of them in which you have to collect clams which are scattered around the map and once you collect eight of them you make a super clam which then you can throw into the basket of the opposing team which will open up the basket and let you put regular clams in there and score.
There is also a PVE mode Called salmon run. In this mode you survive three waves filled with enemies that requires teamwork there are these special enemies that drop of golden eggs in which you have to get these golden eggs into the basket. There’s also a pretty competitive overfishing community to this game mode as well. there’s also a chance that at the end you may experience an extra wave which is a super big boss enemy will come and you’re trying to defeat it.
There is also another mode which is like a card game. It’s a nice game mode to relax. It’s called table turf and it’s similar to turn four except it’s a car game and you place cards to help cleaned her but the catch is is that you can’t turn over the enemies turf unless you get enough special blocks saved up to charge a super which allows you to use any card as long as it’s touching a super block it’s kind of complicated though.
i always do suggest to people if they at least can is try the story mode of the games, it gives a reasonable sense on how the game will play long term. the story modes is also just fun the way motion controls work in splatoon, mouse and keyboard is supirior, but the motion controls do bring up the percision by a heavy amount. for long movement like turning around is still slow for controllers, but the cone you have infront of you which is the majority of your normal motion with motion controls, it actually does directly match the speed that you can pull off with a mouse. said aim sensitivity of that cone infront is adjustable making that cone larger/smaller, so it can be a lot more then you would expect. it is also default controller scheme in splatoon so the majority of the players to actually use it because they did get used to it.
I would consider myself an invested casual into splatoon and motion controls (when done right) feel THE ABSOLUTE BEST WAY TO PLAY aiming with a controller, the speed and precision it provides makes playing anything more fun and more hype when you are playing quickly.
The gyro controls aren’t the end all be all of the game, there are plenty of high level competitive players who use stick controls. But as someone who got into Splatoon and Overwatch on PC (I had never owned a shooter before these) at the same time, I can definitely say the motion controls allow for micro adjustments or flick shots that a mouse would normally be the only way to do. It’s not even that much of a gap in knowledge to learn it.
Starting around the very end of Splatoon 2, I thought motion controls were incredibly stupid and refused to adjust to it because of my own ego. Using Sticks is HORRIBLE in Splatoon; there’s barely any control customization for it and it should really only be used if you have motion sickness or medical related reason that make it impossible to adjust. Sticks also never felt good to me in any shoot game because I also hated the fact that I had to use aim assist; It doesn’t feel raw to me. The only reason I was able to land my shots is because the game does it for me. After a year, when Splatoon 3 was coming out, I decided to give it a try and it’s one of the best decisions I have ever made. I never found it super hard to adjust to(only took a couple of days), but opinions may vary. I REALLY can’t play without motion controls anymore and I’m super thankful that Overwatch 2 has gyro customization. The functionality of gyro, at least how I would describe it to someone who has never used it, is just to fine tune. You use your stick to aim in the general direction and then use gyro as a sort of manual aim assist. It is not like throwing your arms around to shoot players, you always want to keep your arms stable and resting on something like your legs. It’s super nice to see you talking about Splatoon anyhow!
Banger video I’ve seen it already (and you can tell by my pfp I love Splatoon) I do think this guy kinda took it too far on how necessary motion controls are to play the game as it still works fine without it (of course there in no aim assist) Another thing is Flats is genuinely underestimating the gyrocontrol not being able to replicate mouse and keyboard as I remember always being ass at Fortnite then played Splatoon with gyro controls for 2 years then tried Fortnite again with motion aiming and barely ever lost a game my aim was so tight
Motion controls while arent as precise as mouse, its SO much better than dual sticks. You can actually flick and snap to targets on gyro controls. It does have to be implemented well though. Overwatch gyro is pretty scuffed but splatoon or any nintendo game feels really good. But in general its good for the same reason as mouse in that the amount you move the controller/mouse will always be (relatively) the same distance your crosshair moves. Once every console/game starts putting gyro in as an option, the best console players will most definitely be the motion control users.
Gyro aiming for a controller is apparently actually very good and seems like it can compete with KBM even in competitive games. SolarLight's video "Why Controllers Don't Suck in Team Fortress 2" and iHardScope's video "Why Controllers Don’t Suck In CS2" you can see them in action and there is actually a lot of potential
A game doesn't need to be an Esport or competitive to be successful, in fact causal games tend to be more successful then competitive ones that focus on smaller more hardcore audience, but because people use Twitch viewership and such as a metric for a games success it changes their perception of how good the game is, often forgetting the fact that some games are not that interesting to see someone play or don't have as much repeatability so streamers don't play it.
I took the time to try and play splatoon, it took ages to feel comfortable with the motion control and it was fun... but it took ages like a year of only playing it as my go to shooter then when I stopped for a week and went back to Destiny2 as new expac etc and man did it feel so much better than the motion control, then went back to splatoona, it was only a week away and nah I played 3 games and have never loaded up splatoon since it is awful, mouse and keyboard is 100000% superior to motion controls for transparency I have very light dyspraxia so using my hand isn't the easiest, think like having a few seconds delay for seeing a thing then telling my hands to react its not automatic I have to think about it, but mouse and keyboard is way way better
splatoon also has stick options btw, not that it probably matters to you much since you hate it now lol. But yeah motion control isn't always disability friendly ngl, especially in such a fast paced game.
i've been playing splatoon since it came out and I gotta say, gyro aiming is very good. I have never been able to play mouse and keyboard, but gyro is something that is fairly easy to pick up in splatoon

Someone whos played this game series for almost 9 years.
I can confirm that motion controls are the closes to mouse like input for a controller believe it or not. Its not exactly as hard as people make it out to be too but truthfully you probably could challenge someone who would be using mouse input and that user would not be able to tell the difference on what they went up against.
Mouse is still the superior input but Motion is not far behind.

especially in a game like Splatoon, having the possibility to keep a high sens by default while having good tracking is so fun as a player
I would really love to see flats look into a competitive tournament of Splatoon just to get an idea because the depth of the game really is deep and it makes for a really fun competitive environment, from leaderboards to different tiers of teams; there's a lot that was made by the community.
Or at the very least, it's significantly better than aim assist alone.
The dlc almost made me get the game lol
Also the lore is really cool. I won't spoil it but some of the lore changes the way you look at the entire series.
YOU SHOULD GET IT ITS FULL AS HELL @@-cactus.raven-
Flats said that the only way gyro aiming could gain traction would be if a new generation of kids grew up with it and I agree, but I think this is exactly what is happening for nintendo kids.
@@-cactus.raven- funny pun
agreed! i was.. i wanna say 14 or 15 when splat1 came out and i got it for xmas and personally hadn't had much gaming experience beyond some nintendo games, so i just used the motion controls.
Overwatch added it on Switch. And it actually rocks.
@@Cool-VestI’ve played CSGO with motion controls on the Steam Deck, and it feels amazing!
fr, really annoying to see people so confidently rant smth like this without actually looking into the subject and researching. makes them look silly ash
I originally started my competitive journey on Splatoon 1 and 2 and omg I can't believe people don't give it a chance
I LOVE the concept for the game but I can't do shooters with a controller. If it was on PC with mouse controls I would eat that shit up.
The gyro controls is easily the best way to play Splatoon. Playing sticks just doesn't feel right at all
I'd get into it if Nintendo Online existed in my country. Really interested in the series though.
It's legit.
yeah ive seen people use a tech called flick sticking using a joystick to move and gyro to aim
Honestly facts, going in between the two, yeah it’s different but quality wise it feels so similar
It definitely helps because the game is faster paced but the lack of aim assist is argue makes it more skillful than regular aim.
Ive been arguing pro-gyro aim for years, i love it so much and i wish we could do away with all the unjustified prejudices it faces
Yup. This guy was one of them. He hears motion controls, and immediately shuts his brain off.
Dismissing gyro controls basically right off the bat is kinda closed minded
I've been playing with motion for 8 years, most of splatoon's life span, and I even use it in fortnite
While it isn't the best for fortnite's combat after gyro gets reworked heavily, it is amazing for building and editing
It does bridge the gap between mouse and keyboard way more than that of aim assist, and instead of it being a computer program that bridges the gap, it's your actual skill
Motion does take time to learn and a decent bit to master, but it is amazing once you can play it
The only flaw with motion controls is that it is sadly stuck to certain games on certain platforms, and more importantly, those with disabilities may not be able to move the controller
Not surprising given its flats

It's pretty ironic that a lot of overwatch creator's editor's put splatoon music in a lot of their videos, yet neither the creator or editor plays the games 😅. Just shows you how good some of the music is 👌
wait i dont watch overwatch stuff but thats kinda funny. any examples??
Like of a specific video??? I don't remeber each video, but flats, emong, wanted, and questron (the four I subed to) all put music on some videos back to back. They used ebb and flow, acid hues, and ink me up (the ones I can remeber off the top of my head)
ua-cam.com/video/WHvMJJAZFoI/v-deo.htmlsi=uzkTZ6JmFSnzLdKi
I remeber this one because it was a day after grandfest and I was still really emotional over it
I'd call myself a casual gamer, and the motion controls for Splatoon are the best way to play. They have improved it over the 3 games, and will surely improve in the next.
Especially because the fast paced nature can mean a zip is behind you as a charger and you have to flick to them in a fast and skilled way
Ok, I gotta be real here.
There's definitely going to be a heap of causal players in a game that sold around 12 million copies
The game is very welcoming and noob friendly. There is a single-player campaign, 4 player co-op PVE mode, and a single player roguelike DLC. There is a ton of stuff outside multiplayer pvp to keep people interested and engaged.
my man even if you absolutely never play any splatoon PLEASE, PLEASE watch some compettetive play its genuinely insane
@@joejones6353 a better video on the subject would be "This is what makes the splatoon series so successful"
I was able to transition to diamond easily on PC with gyro controls and never felt like I was at a disadvantage.
as someone who actually played a load of splatoon 1 back in the day, i gotta say people sleep on motion controls
took me a while to get used to them but it unironically felt amazing to use
Flats obviously has a lot of experience w shooters and PC gaming but I had to laugh at his low information Switch takes
I mean it is very low power and the online service though getting buffed recently can still feel like shit
@legamofz-nc6gx they were testing dedicated servers recently (the playtest servers weren't running on the switch) I think
😮thank you
Especially during dive meta Jesus u had like tetra who dashed like 4 fucking times and was in ur face then not then behind a corner and now they have a shark heading for your ass then the get 4 rolls again.
I am not a switch player, nor will I ever be, but idk man I feel like ur ego kicked in a lil bit there
Can we really blame the ol' geezer for not understanding the newfangles technique?
I mean this as a friendly tease more than an insult.
@@Cool-Vesthes in his 20s man, hes just close minded
"Aversge switch graphics" shows tears of the kingdom in 144p.
Think what I wanted to say was like, party games. Wrong wording but I think the message came thru
A lot of the points made are non points lol
Also smash lol. One of the biggest competitive scenes.
Same thing here though I have had tries to play it as I main the fun weopans like stamper and dualies
14:50
We all know these two words turns EVERYONE off from this game, but the wild thing is that it really does make all the difference in an accurate console shooter!
It turns of people who arent smart enough to do two things at once yeah. For some people having to move both the controller and the sticks is apparently too much of a load on their brain
Haha, didn’t expect my motion control learning curve graph to show up
Flats, I'm gonna hold your hand when I say this...
Motion controls makes Splatoon better...
Watch any high level charger player (I suggest DUDE) and you’ll be amazed at how fast and accurate they are with motion controls
Flats is in absolute denial with gyro lol
Because I do believe that the whole Switch exclusivity thing is the main thing keeping Splatoon from growing in popularity outside of Japan exponentially.

splatoon is goated as fuck, love the story mode, the multiplayer is always fun with a variety of modes, fun lore, amazing gameplay
Adults DON’T want to play a kids game, despite their reasons for doing so proving they are more immature than actual kids. “ThIs GaMe LoOkS tOo ChIlDiSh!” “ThIs GaMe HaS nO dEaThMaTcH!” “SiXtY dOlLaRs!?” “KeYbOaRd AnD mOuSe Is BeTtEr!” The list goes on, and on, and on. While I do agree that it didn’t need to have that much emphasis in the video, it’s still an important conversation to have. I wonder if the purpose of mentioning this issue (other than satisfying the title of the video) was to make people think harder about these points and ask themselves if that will continue to deny them access to this masterpiece. Don't knock motion controls until you try it
The crossover I never knew I wanted
I love splatoon ever since the Wii U and overwatch since 2016.
I really hope this guy trys it sometime. He's missing out.
I do just wish that some CoD bros or Overwatch players would like- even consider playing it
I feel like some people who look at the game, and they've never cared for it really have no reason to dog on splatoon.
Exactly!! Why wouldn’t a game built for a specific console not run well on said console?
Like say one wants that Cap of legend (A salmon run reward)
Well that will easily net you the same amount of playtime it takes to get 3 gold guns in overwatch.
Splatoon 1 and 2 were not as grindy and rewards were more earned by leveling up finishing the main story and dlc the Amiibo challenges.
Other than that the gameplay is awesome the Splatfest are cool. (The grandest especially) Wish you were there it was that amazing.
I was so excited for splatoon 3, but I had so many performance issues with it at launch I just couldn't play it.
Well, it ain't at launch anymore. And it shows.
I'll have to get switch online again and try maybe
@@yoku_UwU If you're unsure, you could just use the free trial or one month membership.
That's not to say it's perfect or anything. But it's at least mostly functional. Plus, all the content is now in the game. Every weapon now has two kits, and each class got a new weapon. The new stages are a lot better designed than the launch ones too.

I feel like motion controls always get this shit from people who haven't even really given them a chance.
I think it would be financial suicide to release a console, watch the pro flop
@@KNGDDDEwhat? What does the ps5 pro have to do with anything nintendo related?
*Me sitting here in my addiction to playing The Finals corner*
Oh my god, it’s the video I recommended!
Splatoons gyro controls are extremely good and lowkey way more fun and satisfying than playing with a mouse
Gyro Controls are genunely amazing and its 100% because of Xbox that they are not standered tbh
FLATS AND SPLATOON? I NEVER TGHOUGHT ID SEE THE DAY
And apparently we never will. Womp womp.
@@Cool-Vest I mean, it was bold to even think that there was a possible timeline where an Overwatch 2 player is humble enough to give a Splatoon game an honest chance. As soon as I heard him trashing motion controls, I knew there was no saving him, like when a Mercy player knows a teammate is going to die no matter what you do.

@@kado-2323 I held out hope for a while. But ultimately, he's too old to learn motion controls, too spoiled to wheel out the switch, and too competitive to deal with Nintendo's conflict with the community.
@@Cool-Vest I mean, it hurts to agree with you on that sentiment because he’s by far my favorite Overwatch content creator, but, that title only means so much when Overwatch is not my home; Splatoon is.

I loved actually hearing someone being more critical of the game since it opens a lot of new viewing angles :]
that being said I think the only real gripe I had with it is your dismissal of motion controls. No hyperbole, they genuinely are the future of controller aiming in games like these
aim assist will always have issues, whether its too strong, too weird, too intrusive, and overall it feels like a necessary "crutch" of sorts that the game needs in order to feel enjoyable
Motion controls with some practice (that ANY aiming method demands anyway, including mouse and stick aiming) are genuinely a stellar solution as there is no "the game is doing the aiming for you" arguments to be had when 100% of the aiming is player controlled, and unlike sticks, the skill ceiling is the same sort of "basically infinite" that mouse has since the gyro is (nearly) as fast as your hands are
Obviously its gonna take a while to catch on with other studios and companies before they start implimenting it more, but I think on the whole dismissing gyro like this is a bit disingenuous, especially when again, right stick + aim assist is not exactly that great a solution in the first place
also its not JUST gyro, that would suck. Its basically using the right stick for macro aim (do I look to my left or my right), and the gyro is then used for micro aim (do I aim at the person's head who is on my right, or do I aim for the explosive barrel that is next to them)
sorry for the big comment, just wanted this out, but again I think the video was great otherwise and I do agree with a lot of your points!
@ Might have to try that out sometime
I play esports and splatoon and I have to say… If esports implemented motion controls like splatoon I’d rather use a controller
motion controls are amazing in this game and when done right they do in fact rival a mouse and keyboard. It genuinly feels better and more immersive even for old joe
Your rant about gyro aiming is so wrong on so many levels
It’s called table turf and it’s similar to turn four except it’s a car game and you place cards to help cleaned her but the catch is is that you can’t turn over the enemies turf unless you get enough special blocks saved up to charge a super which allows you to use any card as long as it’s touching a super block it’s kind of complicated though.
i always do suggest to people if they at least can is try the story mode of the games, it gives a reasonable sense on how the game will play long term. the story modes is also just fun
the way motion controls work in splatoon, mouse and keyboard is supirior, but the motion controls do bring up the percision by a heavy amount. for long movement like turning around is still slow for controllers, but the cone you have infront of you which is the majority of your normal motion with motion controls, it actually does directly match the speed that you can pull off with a mouse. said aim sensitivity of that cone infront is adjustable making that cone larger/smaller, so it can be a lot more then you would expect. it is also default controller scheme in splatoon so the majority of the players to actually use it because they did get used to it.
I would consider myself an invested casual into splatoon and motion controls (when done right) feel THE ABSOLUTE BEST WAY TO PLAY aiming with a controller, the speed and precision it provides makes playing anything more fun and more hype when you are playing quickly.
15:40 someone show this guy some ProChara clips cuz he has no idea what this control scheme is actually capable of.
Banger video I’ve seen it already (and you can tell by my pfp I love Splatoon) I do think this guy kinda took it too far on how necessary motion controls are to play the game as it still works fine without it (of course there in no aim assist)
Another thing is Flats is genuinely underestimating the gyrocontrol not being able to replicate mouse and keyboard as I remember always being ass at Fortnite then played Splatoon with gyro controls for 2 years then tried Fortnite again with motion aiming and barely ever lost a game my aim was so tight
Flats should watch Solarlight’s vid on Controllers in TF2
I recommend checking out SolarLight’s video on motion controls, he managed to get gyro to work really well in Team fortress 2
I took the time to try and play splatoon, it took ages to feel comfortable with the motion control and it was fun... but it took ages like a year of only playing it as my go to shooter
then when I stopped for a week and went back to Destiny2 as new expac etc and man did it feel so much better than the motion control, then went back to splatoona, it was only a week away and nah I played 3 games and have never loaded up splatoon since it is awful, mouse and keyboard is 100000% superior to motion controls
for transparency I have very light dyspraxia so using my hand isn't the easiest, think like having a few seconds delay for seeing a thing then telling my hands to react its not automatic I have to think about it, but mouse and keyboard is way way better
splatoon also has stick options btw, not that it probably matters to you much since you hate it now lol.
But yeah motion control isn't always disability friendly ngl, especially in such a fast paced game.
Should've started with the disclaimer imo
Flats that generation is already partially in college dude 😂
hey flats you should take a look at solar lights video about how controllers don't suck in tf2 because of motion controls its a great video
I played splatoon 2 without motion controls, I switched to motion on splatoon 3 and it's not only more fun, but also more accurate.
i've been playing splatoon since it came out and I gotta say, gyro aiming is very good. I have never been able to play mouse and keyboard, but gyro is something that is fairly easy to pick up in splatoon
