When a controller button is pressed, the metal contacts inside touch and complete an electrical circuit which sends signals through the wire (or Bluetooth) to the console or computer. Electricity can be conducted through water, that gel stuff, and even humans which is why they were able to use those things in place of controller buttons. Whenever they made contact with those conductive things it would complete the circuit and send a signal. Hope that helps!

I love that Dan falling off the cliff because he started "thinking about Aladdin" went both completely unexplained and completely unquestioned.
