My interpretation is that this song relates back to Kintsugi where she talks about how breaking your heart is how the light gets in. So she knows that the relationship maybe won’t last or end happily but she’s appreciating it for the good times.
The concept of breaking completely to build something more beautiful is something she explores throughout the whole album, she talks about it during the Rolling Stones interview, and YES!! "There's a crack in everything, that's how the light comes in" is Leonard Cohen beautiful lyrics. Funny that Father John Misty uses that expression in his work as well and even has a cover of that exact same song.
this is my favorite song from the album, the first time I listened to this I was so deeply touched, everything about it from the lyrics to the production just made me genuinely happy, even though it's not as happy as it seems, but also following it with margaret was the best decision, just love how Lana is finally healing from the past and accepting love as it is :))
I made the connection to “A&W” too definitely when she mentions the part about feeling like a side chick at the age of 33. It all connects to that verse because in this song everything is of course love driven at face value but if you read what is being said actually, it’s very secretive. For instance everything is tine sensitive, punctual, precise “pick you up around quarter to two” almost like everything had to be at certain times, or done when given a signal to avoid problems. And then the “Let the light in” ties with the song “Kintsugi” “that’s how the light gets in” but a more fleshly/ forced version, as if she was chasing adrenaline and sexual desires with this person to kind of make her dark/depressive/shattering life seem a bit more put together. But in actuality it all was just a mask which is why the song ends with “Look at us, you and I, back at it again” something that she thought was lovely in the beginning just became a routine.
The way she sings the words "love song" kinda sounds like she's calling back to an older song of hers named "Love Song". The words have a similar melody in both, so maybe it's supposed to be an obvious link to that song, which incidentally is also a nice song about being in love. I think this is one of the times she lets herself just sing about something nice, something this album especially doesn't have a whole lot of lol
Yes! She sings just like she does in the simply beautiful, "Love Song" from Norman Fking Rockwell. It's one of my top favorites on that album because it is such a beautiful, sweet love song through and through💙
Without reading into the lyrics and accepting it at face value… this is such a beautiful song and is such a ending worthy track. But I think that’s why it’s not the ending track because, it isn’t a true love song.. it’s a reflection on a past fling that she used and that used her. She was using them to let the light into her life when it was dark. Her own version of kintsugi
@@mendwithmere you’re welcome! I love your reaction videos. I love dissecting lyrics to songs and I love it even more when it’s with other people who appreciate the deeper meanings of songs and the people who write them
There is a sense of desperation in this song. It’s so beautiful, but you can definitely tell she is doing all these things to please him so that maybe one day he will let the light in and just accept her love.
This song is my current obsession from the album. I fear you may be right about it being a hidden love or another story about being a side piece. BUT I will also continue to listen to it in ignorant bliss and pretend it is just a beautiful love song 🥰
Thanks for doing these videos. Your reactions are super genuine and actually insightful unlike most on UA-cam. This album is shockingly deep, timeless, and healing.
i always felt like this song was loving someone that does not love you. A sort of love on first sight that is not shared. Atleast thats how i related/felt about it. Relationships in which you try to ''let the light in'' be positive, be loving be caring have fun but that feeling is not shared with the other. And the song being a sort of calling to let the light in?
That makes sense, the fact that they’re also driving around at night and they never seem to hang out in the daytime shows that they probably are hiding it. She’s so content with her lover that she’s willing to drive around with him and get drunk and literally do nothing but be around him and be happy.
I’m loving all the Taylor and Lana reactions, and appreciate your insight and vulnerability. I look forward to all your videos! Based on the music you’ve reacted to I really think you’d enjoy the musician Wet! Her music got me through most of my time in college, and her song “It’s All in Vain” holds a special place in my heart. Thank you for all you do!
Okay whenever I listed to this song I pictured a couple that really wasn’t good for each other, probably based sexually, and she knows that he’s probably just using her for sex, but she loves him so much that she doesn’t want to give him up, and that’s why she’s saying “Hey, let me in, I want to love you but you’re not letting me in fully” Or when she says “look at us you and I back at it again” I think that the cycle of her just accepting that he’s using her is restarting
3:44 in the song "Sad Girl" by Lana, she says "Being a mistress on the side It might not appeal to fools like you ... But you haven't seen my man" So I think you're spot on Mere :)
Love this and can’t wait for more! I also *choose* to see this as a lightheaded love song lol. It’s just so pretty and her voice sores at the end! In love with this song’s vibe.
This song has many layers. It made me cry because it’s so painful to love someone who doesn’t belong to you. Your intuitions are correct, in this song she’s singing about an affair.
Fellow therapist here!! 😊 I don’t think you are overthinking this song at all! I also deeply admire Lana’s vulnerability in her songwriting as she puts her heart into everything. I had to really sit with this album and process the lyrics of every piece but with this one in particular; I feel like she’s giving us a beautiful melody in this lovely duet with an underlying tone that this relationship is very one-sided and she’s searching for meaning in it still. Love your reactions as always!
This song reminds me of Bartender and how she was trying to keep her relationship secret from the media and paparazzi. I don’t feel like it’s about being a side chick. It’s a love song but not wanting to be public about your relationship.
I commented this on your A&W video, but I really wanted you to read, so this is it: there is a fantastic TV series called Unbelievable, all about the topics raised in the A&W lyrics, almost all women cast, fantastic acting and I absolutely recommend it to you, even if not as a reaction, just enjoyment.

this song personally makes me kind of feel the way my self love, desire to nurture myself, aknowledge im a pure being who deserves love and has nothing to hide but to be myself keeps fighting with my destroying and saddening thoughts about myself. how i would love to just enjoy life, enjoy having nothing to do, going to record or do my art, instead of constantly being sad about external situations. because i feel bad when i hate myself, when i dont give myself the acceptance i deserve
I wonder if you’ve ever heard of Ethel Cain? She’s super talented and her debut album just came out last year, she’s a preacher’s daughter and talks a lot about her religious upbringing being a transgender woman, that’s would be an interesting + deep topic if you could talk about while reacting to one of her songs. Would love to see you react to Sun Bleach Flies by her.

I totally relate to your interpretation and think you’re right. Since we’re all sharers here - The song reminds me of when I would chase guys who were only interested in me if they were bored or if there was nothing else to do, and since I had low self esteem as soon as I got their fleeting validation I felt on top of the world. Of course this would only last a day and a half tops and then I’d go back to being miserable because they didn’t want me, but when the day came where they “wanted me” again, it felt a lot like this song 😅 and then start over 😂💔
I love your breakdowns of the songs! As someone not familiar with that topic, maybe you could incorporate more “psychological jargon”. People could learn new things, I know I would love too! And you seem very knowledgeable 😊
When this song came out I was going through a breakup and first time I heard it I cried like a baby 😥.. this song for me ment not having your love reciprocated back , ultimately leading to a heartbreak 💔
I completely agree that there is a tension between the content and the music, which becomes more explicit if listened in the context of the album. It’s a really sweet Beatles pop rock song, but, at the same time, the story indicates the “A&W” kind of relationship - drinking and driving, sexual objectification, sidepiece etc. It’s even more desperate than A&W in a way, because if there she said “it’s not about having someone to love me anymore”, losing all hope, here she’s crying out “let the light in, at your back door yelling cause i wanna come in…”. Maybe the point of the song is hope, hope that something good will grow out of the bad, explaining the sweetness of the tone. I don’t know…
I absolutely love your interpretations, and I really think you’d enjoy her song Get Free. It has a strong psychological bent and is an absolute tearjerker-full of references to paint the picture of a woman free from an abusive relationship. If you ever react, I’ll be sure to tune in :)
Thank you so much for your interpreatation! I'm loving your videos about Ocean blvd so far, and in my view the placement of every song has a meaning which can help the listener identify the positive/negative shade within it. "Let the light in" is the second to last song of the "tunnel" we have walked from the beginning (I personally consider the last three songs as bonus trakcs), at the end of which is the famous light she has managed to reach. I do think too that the relationship in this song is bittersweet, maybe an on and off one, but I also kinda feel that Lana is now able to recognise the situation and the rational part of her is the one who sings "I want to want you - I need to need you, - I hate to hate you", almost like she knows that this love could make her suffer and that maybe the most healthy choice would be to end it, but at the same time it's too attractive to love passionately, without holding it back, without regrets. The ending image of coming back home with flowers and watching tv laying on each other, eventually gives me the feeling of a calm and finally secure relationship, which could be the perfect conclusion of her journey. Maybe I'm seeing it in a too positive way, I hope not. :')
It'd be awesome if you could do a video reacting to Lana's unreleased songs! Theres so much information about her there, and it comes easily to understand the references on her released songs!
Omg! I love this channel. I love these videos! As a psychology student I analyze everything, but I haven’t thought deeply about a song from Lana. I’ve been listening to her since I was 12 and she’s impacted my life tremendously. I think she captures women hood perfectly (to me) and her songs can make me cry no matter what my mood is. This is my favorite song on the album!
In her Song from the album Lust For Life, Lana has a song titled Coachella, and the opening line is "I was at Coachella leaning on your shoulder, watching your husband swing in time" and she is referring to Father John Misty. He is also the bearded man in her video for Freak. She also covered a song he made and it was added to one of his albums as a bonus track. It's called Buddy's Rendezvous, and it is so pretty. I think you should definitely give that a listen. This is such an early morning, coffee sipping, breakfast making type of song. It instantly reminded me of the movie Almost Famous. With first, of course the sound because it sounds like something you would hear from the 70's. Also, the context because of how you described the possible affair and "side chick" trope. I don't know if you've seen the movie, but it is about a fictional band and how they have groupies and of course the main band member they focus on is married. And the main character is a teen boy who is writing an article about them, so he goes on tour with them and sees everything. And the boy and the main band member are both in love with the main groupie character. If you like this and you think it sounds like the Beatles, you should also give her song Tomorrow Never Came a listen, because she made that with Sean Ono Lennon, John and Yoko's son. It literally sounds like she made a song with the Beatles. It is very special because she talked about how Sean brought in his dad's old instruments and they recorded the song using some of them. You always pick up on her themes, even though (I'm assuming) you haven't heard a lot of her songs. In her song American, the opening line is "Play house, put my favorite record on" which is reflected in this song a lot. The notion of playing house, and "put the Beatles on" ah, I love it. I didn't even think about it till you said something. I'm really enjoying these by the way. In case you couldn't tell.
I was thinking and what if... In this song she's talking to herself? Like "hey Lana, I'm lizzy, you have to let the light in. I'm at your back door yelling cause I wanna come in to your life again. I wake you up in the middle of the night cause we need to do some funny things, and I think you should record some of the songs we did together(and it makes me think that she anouced she's releasing soon her old song Yes to Heaven that says "say yes to heaven, say yes to me"). I love you and I don't wanna hate you, I need you so let the light in. You shine so turn you light on. Now put the Beatles on and go to sleep, cause you need to take care of yourself". It's very curious that the lirycs says "you and I back at it again" instead of "you and me" Btw you really really need to react to her 2 short films/music videos: Ride (with a extended monologued where she explains who she was, who she is, what she did and why) and Tropico, so beautiful and with a deep message. ❤
to me, this song is pure hope. at the beginning of this summer i was going through a horrible depressive episode. it got so horrible that something broke and i was able to see the light at the end of the tunnel after being in darkness for weeks. on the day i finally found this glimmer of hope, i listened to this song for the first time. i went with my friend to the park and we talked for an hour in the fresh summer heat. i brought my journal and played this song over and over after she left. i felt like i was breathing air for the first time in a long time. i was ready to let the light in :)
To me, this song is about exes that can't be together but they can't be apart either. That's why it says "Look at us, you and I, back at it again" referring to those encounters they've been having during separation. Lana is the one that keeps longing for a reconciliation, for they to be together again. She is at her back door yelling wanting to come in, meaning that she is constantly asking her partner to be open to be together again but he somehow refuses to, even though he agrees to these casual meetings. Letting the light in means letting her love in again, he turning his light on could mean that she asks him to show at least a glimpse of willingness to accept her back into his life again. She is desperate to come back to him, that's why you get that feeling of intense love and desperation in the song. The "I love to love to love you/I hate to hate to hate you" could be related to that mix of emotions she's been going through since separation and with this back and forth dynamic. But as it is art, the interpretation may vary frome one heart to another. 💕
loved ur take on this song and i definitely think it can be left up to each person like you said, it’s nice to see what everyone thinks with songs like these!!
“Cause every time you say you’re gonna leave I just smile babe cause I already know” to me feels like she knows he’s gonna ghost her like guys before. But then he doesn’t & they’re back at it again & she’ll worry once more. The cycle of a situationship. That’s probably just my interpretation cause I’m being ghosted rn tho 🤣😅
Father John Misty is an incredible musician, and also a dear Lana's friend. I would recommend it to every LdR fan. They admire each other and declare that any time they have a chance. It is beautiful ❤
I love your reactions so much!❤ You give such deep insight and new perspective with each reaction. I also have to add that I love your style and admire how beautiful you always look😊
my favorite on the album. its a fun song. it brings me back the happiness. its a good LOVE SONG... which is a song she is referencing that is good tood.
This song is at least partially an indirect tribute to Leonard Cohen's Anthem: Ring the bells that still can ring Forget your perfect offering There is a crack, a crack in everything That's how the light gets in
I always felt like it's a back and forth relationship well they might want to keep it very discret from everybody now and just enjoy while they're together. Eventually they will break up but this conection is so strong that they know they'll be hanging around after a while. They can be hiding this from friends who might judge them or the media as we know lana has a hard time with it. At the same time i believe everybody knows about them because they are working together...
So most of the songs/artists you react lately are alternative. How about some Billie Eilish songs. She has a lot of song with beautiful messages like xanny, TV, when the party's over, all the good girls go to hell, happier than ever, everything I wanted, male fantasy AND A LOT MOREEEEE! ❤️😭
i like to think of the lyrics about lighting the candles, putting flowers in the vase, putting the tv on, as her telling him to "let the light in" by allowing her into his life: her actions of love are these joyful things that, while simple, illuminate his life and bring them both happiness. when she tells him to "lie his head", she's given him a place to just rest and be joyful with her, and she's created an environment where they can simply be together. i might be biased because i've always seen this song in a positive light but that's just my interpretation :)
Why am I seeing this only now, but it was posted a month ago? I swear it wasn't in the posted videos section on the channel, haha. Good to see you enjoying the song so much, because usually Lana's lyrics put you in a darker mood, I noticed. I'd say it's one of the lighter songs from the album.
One thing I am always wondering about the references to drinking , is that apparently Lana is sober and goes to AA etc but seems to still hang out with and sing about men and friends who drink a lot … or maybe she is relapsing with them ? Or she just doesn’t mind being the designated driver 🤷🏻♀️

Maybe the point of the song is hope, hope that something good will grow out of the bad, explaining the sweetness of the tone. I don’t know…
yes to all of this!
I absolutely love your interpretations, and I really think you’d enjoy her song Get Free. It has a strong psychological bent and is an absolute tearjerker-full of references to paint the picture of a woman free from an abusive relationship.
If you ever react, I’ll be sure to tune in :)
Rewatching every single one of your Lana reactions just to say that you are amazing and I love you
One of my favorite songs off the album❤ what’s your top 3 favorite songs?
I’d love to know this as well!
@@katherineauber Hopefully Mere does a reaction or lists her top few favourite songs when she has reacted to them all :D
I will def rank them once i listen to them all
I love the feeling this song gives me. A smile from ear to ear when you're in love, even though I don't try anyone these days 😅❤
I love this song.So relaxed, and passionate at the same time.💜❤💜 The album("Ocean Boulevard") should win Album of the Year.💛
I love this channel
You look like Carice Van Houten.
Watercolor eyes next please after you do the album
it's on the list!
React Heroín, Sad Girl, Cruel World, Chenge, Yayo, Kill Kill
I don't accept the story that Lana is a side chick in this song. 😭😭😭Don't let it ruin this beautiful and cute song.
It'd be awesome if you could do a video reacting to Lana's unreleased songs! Theres so much information about her there, and it comes easily to understand the references on her released songs!
this song almost reminds me of A Day In The Life by The Beatles
It's very curious that the lirycs says "you and I back at it again" instead of "you and me"
Btw you really really need to react to her 2 short films/music videos: Ride (with a extended monologued where she explains who she was, who she is, what she did and why) and Tropico, so beautiful and with a deep message. ❤
This song could be interpreted both as a love song or an intimacy one, referencing actual acts. Still lovely.
to me, this song is pure hope. at the beginning of this summer i was going through a horrible depressive episode. it got so horrible that something broke and i was able to see the light at the end of the tunnel after being in darkness for weeks. on the day i finally found this glimmer of hope, i listened to this song for the first time. i went with my friend to the park and we talked for an hour in the fresh summer heat. i brought my journal and played this song over and over after she left. i felt like i was breathing air for the first time in a long time. i was ready to let the light in :)
You should react to love song(nfr album) its a beautiful song!
not the way I was thinking, like falling in love, arguing again, back to love, the cycle of it all, lol
loved ur take on this song and i definitely think it can be left up to each person like you said, it’s nice to see what everyone thinks with songs like these!!
thank you!
“Cause every time you say you’re gonna leave I just smile babe cause I already know” to me feels like she knows he’s gonna ghost her like guys before. But then he doesn’t & they’re back at it again & she’ll worry once more. The cycle of a situationship. That’s probably just my interpretation cause I’m being ghosted rn tho 🤣😅
when lana said "i got nothing under this overcoat" i thought she meant like she doesn't have anything to hide yk but idk
you gotta do a father johnnisry reaction
One of my favs from the album!❤
so good
Father John Misty is an incredible musician, and also a dear Lana's friend. I would recommend it to every LdR fan. They admire each other and declare that any time they have a chance. It is beautiful ❤

Glad I discovered you like your therapy views 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
im delusional so im going to pretend its a love ballad!!! I LOVE ALL YOUR REACTIONS BTW 🫶🏼🩷🎀
This song is at least partially an indirect tribute to Leonard Cohen's Anthem:
Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in
you should definitely look into some of Father John Misty’s music - very therapist reacts worthy!!!!! especially his album gods favorite customer.
This are troubled people you are talking about and they might drink and drive is not about an example to follow, but you don’t get Lana del rey
Yes third party love song and yes I hope their not drink driving either peace and love from bondi Australia❤
Dark Paradise or
Hope is a dangerous thing
Next pls ❤❤❤
You look, sound or talk a little bit like Genevive Oreilley playing Mon Mothma in Star Wars, it’s so soothing to watch you
One thing I am always wondering about the references to drinking , is that apparently Lana is
sober and goes to AA etc but seems to still hang out with and sing about men and friends who drink a lot … or maybe she is relapsing with them ? Or she just doesn’t mind being the designated driver 🤷🏻♀️
Please do candy necklace by Lana 🤍🩵 love your videos
react to every lana album!!! especially ultraviolence ! haha i know it’s so much BUT i love to hear what u say
3:49 You didn't. Lana has been written songs about being a side chick.
Love your reactions.
Once again asking for The Grants!
I think it's about Mike Hermosa
I love the bird painting
Please for your own sanity sake stay away from Tori Amos.
Or you can react about Tropico which is a short film from Lana, as well.
