What are you going to put on the sides to control erosion from the sides when water inevitably flows downhill?

Honestly I'd be interested in how much was spent just on rock deliveries. I have a half mile long dirt road and I've been slowly chipping away at it (paying others sadly) and it's been a really expensive project that has spanned 2 years so far.
The rock is the bulk of the cost, aside from the cost of the operator.

They will need to maintain this road forever, and they have the equipment to do it. It will have to settle in for a couple seasons but they did it right and made it wide enough to manage what will present itself. There will be future loads of gravel, and other fill creating projects I'm sure they can use as well.

Riley and Courtney, a suggestion for you. Seed those banks/batters and the dirt sections adjacent to the road. The scrub/brush growth will help stabilize the soil, combat erosion and ultimately extend the life of your road. You might also consider planting a few more trees to replace those you had to push over. They'll also help stabilize the soil and eventually obscure much of the disturbance that was necessary in building the road. P.S. well done. You guys are a great couple.

When we started (watching) the road project, I wasn't sold on the entertainment value let alone the reason why it was decided to make so much content on it. Today was a great reminder of all the hard work and trouble that came before the road was completed! I am so glad for you guys to have the security and peace of mind to pass up and down the road to your home without much effort now. So glad that Tyler and his family could help and spend the summer with you too, it was great getting to know them. My favorite part of this one was searching for the go-pro in the gravel after the dump truck drove over it! The side by side camera views of were entertaining. All the best, can't wait to see what's next!

Hopefully you got the drainage correct and don't have to worry about it!
Since the winter will be here in no time, I'd suggest prepping for snow and fixing your drainage issue by the shop. Also, since the road project is fresh, why not figure out how you're going to take the road up to the top of your hill? Maybe clear a path for the snow-verlander for this winter?

    • @offroad6309
      @offroad6309 Рік тому +3

What a huge relief for you. Looks great.
Get a extra load of gravel to fill in spots as they happen and before they become a big problem.
Also from now on when you grade angle the gravel to the center of the road. This will do a couple things for you. It will create a crown to help with drainage and keep the gravel in the road instead of pushing it in the ditch. Hopefully you have good ditches for drainage.
As others have mentioned get the side hills seeded. Hydro seeding works well. Keep up the good work

The road looks great. I knew it could be fixed. The road needs a crown so its higher in the middle than the sides so the water doesn't sit on the road. You should do that before you use the roller. That rock will still compact if it's not as much moisture in it as when they dumped it out. Y'all did great! 👍

That road sure was and still is one of the biggest things enabling you to be able to have traffic in and out of your home, the exact time you need to. It is sort of amazing how fast that road project scaled up, but I believe doing so also enabled you to get rid of most problems what a small and limited problematic road would probably caused to have during many following years. It 's great you had the opportunity and you made it happen.

Time for a cost analysis. Material: 400 cubic yards of 3/4-inch ABC = about $6,600. Material delivery = ?? Equipment rentals and purchases = ?? Labor: free !! Fuel and repair parts = ?? But the sense of accomplishment is priceless. A beautiful job with all of the correct decisions. Should be solid enough to avoid erosion damage from uphill snow melt. Spring will tell the tale. And those friends of yours! Wow! What a blessing! One thing I'm wondering is were you able to get the road to the slope you needed? Forgive me if you mentioned it and I missed it. You had mentioned that the fire department needed a certain grade to be able to make it up to your house if needed, God forbid. That one rock gave you a lot of trouble. I hope you guys are planning on planting grass on all the slopes along your road. Otherwwise, rain, and snowmelt, is gonna cause major erosion, and your gravel will end up down in the woods. Also, that D8 will destroy the gravel surface when you move on it. The weight, and the aggressive track pads will gouge the surface horribly. Good you have the grader attachment, because you will be using it a lot. Now that the road is basically completed, I would get a smaller dozer, nothing bigger than a D4, or JD 650, something in that size. It will still leave ruts in the road, especailly when turning, but not nearly as bad as the massive D8. Smaller means less fuel burned, easier to work on, cheaper to repair, and the smaller dozers are very capable, and if you ever need to transport one, you can do so without getting an oversize permit. Just my opinion

When placing the camera where it will be buried, tie a bright orange or pink mason’s line to it and run it off on the side. Then simply pull up the line and you’ll find the camera much easier.
Mason’s line is sturdy and abrasion-resistant so it’ll easily handle the task.

Bice work guys. Keep in mind though....the faster you drive on it...the more it will get tore up and holes. Save yourself the time later by taking your time now.
Awesome work and has been a lot of enjoyment watching it all come together!

Can't wait to see a winter update on the road to see how it will be holding up. Great accomplishment for your settlement. Now looking forward to seeing videos of your repair work on the bulldozer transmission.

I can see a future project of converting the grader attachment to utilize the integrated joystick controls on the skid steer instead of that orange remote.

Great seeing all the hard work paying off! Can't wait to see whats next. I love how Riley don't let the fact he doesn't know what he's doing stop him. He just jumps right in and figures it out. Get er done!

Brings back some very cherished memories of when I lived in the woods outside Portland, my dad spent a month or two cutting in a new driveway in the forest. All with a small dozer. I can still smell the clay, diesel and gravel dust.
Loved this video series so much it makes me tear up a little.

You guys are absolutely amazing!! To tackle such a monster project on your own had to be such a daunting task. But with good humor, excitement and great friends to help, you did a terrific job! Congratulations!! Can't wait for the next big project.

The trick with grading - be it a bucket or a road grader - is “take small bites”. Don’t try to move lots of material at one time. Small bites means you never mess up and move too much material away from any spot. Anyway, you’ve all done a great job on the road, it’s really impressive!

I think you should water the road and compact it some more before it rains. Road looks really good and I would hate to see it get washed out.

Nicely done. From one operator to another. The amount of work and skill that it took can't be shown in your videos, I know what it takes.

With all the standard issues that came up, they got this done pretty fast for being green. Does help that they had some experience with smaller scale equipment, but they had good plans and did their homework

Awesome road, I really enjoy your heavy equipment series of vlogs. I hope your still going to repair the D8 with the road finished .I would love to see how you get the transmission out of that thing.
