Pure joyous Scottish brilliance! Love this band!!
While this was probably referencing the BBC One Top Of The Pops show, there was a 1960s BBC Radio output Top Of The Pops mainly on transcription discs for world service and overseas radio station partners of UK music scene. Not sure if it was monthly or weekly mainly with Brian Matthew as host and a number of live radio studio performances ( probably too some record company supplied tapes for inserts to make the show up ) , the discs were supposed to be returned but many have survived and have provided many alternative takes etc for YT these days
Such a great band live.
Brilliant! On Top of the Pops
Great band.
Great happy memories of this......great song👍👍
Such a fine scottish band. Saw them. And its just Such Fun!!! U2 have such a good taste of music! Mamas and the papas did a god job about lipsync when Michelle ate a banana when singing 'Califonia dreaming" on a famious american show. Kind regards from Jonas Gothenburg Sweden. Keep on.
Thanks for playing this. fun fun fun all the way
As much fun as it's possible to have in a three minute pop song.
A true punk / pop classic ! .. High on energy, melody, and fun .. Just about my favourite song by this excellent band .. Their whole debut album "Can't Stand The Rezillos" is top notch.👌👍
Sounds well done. Entertaining dig at Top of the Pops TV show.
Great fun! There's an energetic version of this on the Revolver show 1978 - live. Complete with the audience pogoing.
Trivia fact ...they opened for the Ramones on the new years eve at the Rainbow in London in 77
Good memories. One of those songs that just lifts your day and a good one to wake up to.
I’ve still got Can’t Stand the Rezillos album over forty years later
The lead singer, Claire Grogan, was Gregory's girl in the film, "Gregory's Girl", starring John Gordon Sinclair. It's worth hunting out.
@@Gill3D not Clare grogan, Faye fife
Great Post-punk pop band.
Saw them last year, great night 😊
Thanks for a great trip down memory lane ! Still sounds Ace !!
I remember seeing this at the time. The term "Tongue In Cheek" springs to mind!
They were also called "The Revillos" for a a spell. Also they did a tremendous cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Somebody's Gonna Get Their Head Kicked In Tonight".
I have another suggestion for a reaction for you, it's a band called Foals and the song is Red socks pugie, they did a live version on later with jools holland which is great, studio or live it's a good one though! The rezillos tune though is certainly a blast from the past lol
The best song from the classic 1978 album Can't Stand The Rezilloos. The leader of the band Jo Callis ended up in Human League & cowrote ✍️ some of their big 80's hits. Fun song 😁
I must dig out my LP!
They're still touring. I saw them at Chester Last Year. They're carrying a bit more weight, but hey, they are a bit older now. They are fun.
Ps. Im sure you will like this britt band. They were called the Vibrators. Song: Judy says she's gonna kick you in... same vibes. Take care.😊 Jonas.
Well, that's a bit of fun! I don't know this song, but really enjoyed it!
great track, great band! 👍
Interesting that my sister suggested this. Didn't think she would even remember it. 🤷♀
That looks like they are on TOTP as well. I think I might be going to see them again at some point soon.
I remember everyone saying the lead singer was Fay Fife and then saying aye but what is her name...
@@ylt123 Aye, she's no lost her Accent.
11/10 top marks, 🏴go fay fyfe , good choice, love it ❤❤❤🏴 happy healthy peace ✌️
The Kinks also have a song called Top of the Pops (from 1970). A very sarcastic song.
TOTP was on once a week. This band's style like Sham 69, Hurry up Harry, Buzzcocks, What do I care, poppy songs. TOTP epic, Visions of China, Cantonese Boy by Japan. Cheers.
I attended Top of the Pops in April 1974, but the episode was wiped, as were many pre-1976.
Faye and Eugene still touring now-still great fun!
Excellent!!
That was jolly good! It seems Half Man Half Biscuit were inspired by the melody in their excellent 'Bad Losers on Yahoo Chess' from 2010's CSI:Ambleside
Brilliant tune. Saw them a month ago in Edinburgh, their home town. They still have it. Have you done Can’t Stand My Baby yet. Another classic pop tune.
@@neilclarkson7365 hey Neil there not from Edinburgh, there from Dunfermline in Fife, hence the name, Fay fyfe 🏴✌️
@@JamesDickson-vs5ofyep that’s just over the bridge from Edinburgh. They were always known as part of the Edinburgh scene.
The guitarist with the hat ended up in the Human League
You got to be a soulless miserable fool to not enjoy the Rezillos. So great!
TOTP studios were terrible for sound, which is one reason they didn’t really allow bands to play live. The musicians union objected to this heavily, as recorded music was replacing actual musicians. To skirt this, bands appearing had to go into studios ahead of their appearance and re-record their track before appearing on the show. This would involve bringing in session players, brass sections, strings, whatever had been on the original recording and paying them scale for their work.
In reality an awful lot of 're-recorded' stuff sounded surprisingly similar to the original, but musicians were paid either way.
A very few bands did insist on playing live, but very few, and they needed to either have some power to demand it, or just be fiercely principled- as Billy Bragg was.
There are numerous instances of bands deliberately mocking having to lip-sync. There are probably compilation videos of it. In 1982, with the launch of Channel 4 came a new music show "the Tube". Infinitely cooler, the studio was built with live music in mind and featured several stages, and proper sound equipment. Although more sedate, original Tube co-host Jolson Holland has a show similar in philosophy to the Tube, where a number of stages are used for bands to perform live on.
😢😢 R.I.P MARIANNE FAITHFUL 💔😓😥😱
@@heathcornbeef I've been playing Broken English all afternoon on a loop
@@Sandy-dd4le so bloody sad 💔
Faye fife from memory
From memory at the time The Rezillo's would have been called "New Wave" as opposed to "Punk" by the music press in the UK. I think some used it as an insult tbh. You might like the band Penetration fronted by Pauline Murray from that time, "Danger Signs" is a good single. I presume you've reacted to X Ray Spex already (I'm new here).
@@petemonaghan4277 Penetration! There's a band I havent thought of in a while!
Penetration we're so good 👍...saw them at the Roundhouse in London with amongst others 999, Buzzcocks, Generation X.....and they blew them all away 😊
Yes we have been reacting to some X-Ray Spex, great stuff. We will add your request to our list.
That was a surprise, never heard of them. I was thinking at the start must be Spanish eg Trujillo or Jolla.. the L's do it all the time.
I'm kinda thinking they may have inspired No Doubt!
Great stuff from this Scottish band, they were always one of the happier sounding Punk bands, I requested this ages ago too.
I think that you've lost Jay for good as he's not commented on here for about two weeks, sadly, this can be a problem, losing people when you concentrate on one part of your audience over the others, it's a balancing act which it seems you've yet to master, sadly.
Hanier family please do David Bowie singing gene Genie on top of the pops and you will see that he is singing it live or even Starman.
Two sure classic Bowie tunes. We love them!
Watch Public Image on American Bandstand to see a band make a mockery of lip synching & legendary host Dick Clark handles it well. It's classic 👌
Heart broken 💔😢
Top of the Pops once decided that every track had to be played live and trust me, it was dreadful. They had an in-house orchestra that backed artists and they were very bad at it. I well remember being excited that Althia and Donna were due on to sing Uptown Top Ranking. The musicians were very clearly out of their depth with reggae and I had to leave the room to avoid embarrasment. Sadly, A&D didn't have that option.
Hey C&C .. You've enjoyed all you've heard so far from The Rezillos, and rightly so .. But don't forget about the band that came out of them called The Revillos .. They had more of a beach rock sound, and were pure fun .. Check out their video for "Where's The Boy For Me" uploaded by Devilinthenewman .. Visual quality is not great, but the performance is super high energy ! 💥
Hi Wayne. Do you remember the video (Where's The Boy For Me) getting played on Countdown? It was the episode hosted by Ellen Foley back in March 1980.
@@I_was_a_Countdown_Kid-75-83 ▪Hey there, Hayley ! .. To be honest, I can't really remember seeing it on Countdown, or even seeing that episode hosted by Ellen Foley .. I heard the song on 3RRR, loved it, and immediately bought the single .. It's a terrific song, and I'm glad you remember it .. I took it to the place where I was doing roller skating to music and got the DJ to play it .. Went down well with the skaters and the DJ, which I was very pleased about.😊
But you sparked my curiosity about that Countdown episode, so I just found it on YT and watched it .. It was quite a good one.👍.. I love Ellen Foley, and her first 2 albums are among my very favourites ever .. From what I saw, she did a great job as host .. But if you were there, you may have some particular memories about her or the episode that you think are worth sharing.
BTW - I responded about a week ago to your last post on the Nancy Can't Dance video, but maybe you didn't get notified by YT, or perhaps you need to look for it with the Newest sorting view .. I was asking about your fave Countdown episodes in it .. Cheers, Wayne
@@wayne_twentyfive Did you find the entire episode hosted by Ellen Foley? I had to do a bit searching to find this: Countdown - 9th March 1980 (Australian Music Show) (the Ellen Foley hosted show). For some reason, the excerpts of the show seem to only come up in the UA-cam search results.
I was at the taping of that show. The most fun we had was moshing to Ellen's song ''Stupid Girl'', and dancing to Queens' ''A Crazy Little Thing Called Love'' (the # 1 song at the time; naturally finishing the show). The rest of the taping was pretty ordinary. Guest performers - Loaded Dice and Jon English - made no impact, and the rest was either music videos (''Where's The Boy For Me'' being one) or interviews (the Tom Petty interview was two years old at that point, but was retrieved just as Petty was beginning to take off). We just spent most of the time hanging around the studio while Ellen did her best to host the show. The most entertaining parts of the show were actually the most fun we had that night. You can sort of tell as you watch.
From what I remember, the early months of 1980 felt like an anti-climax. Life didn't suddenly turn futuristic like a Gary Numan video. Disco was still in the air, and most of the music from the previous year was still riding high on the charts. New Wave (B-52's, Talking Heads, Blondie, et al.) was still the most exciting and interesting thing happening at that time, but even bands like Boomtown Rats were beginning to sound like yesterday's news at that point. I think my favourite episodes of Countdown were the ones that Elton John co-hosted. He was just a great guy to have in the studio, and he and Molly were always entertaining.
The show I least enjoyed (there were many) was probably the one hosted by Bob Geldof.
I thought ''Somebody's Looking At You'' was crap.
I'm curious, Wayne. Which skating rink did you go to? A lot of us Countdown kids frequented local roller skating parlours around Melbourne. We also went to pool halls which played a lot of lesser known New Wave music. ''Where's The Boy For Me'' wouldn't have been out of place at some of the places I hung out at... I remember Rachel Sweet being a bit of a hit at some of these places for a couple of months too...
Cheers,
Hayley
I answered you! But I did fail to answer your question about my favourite Countdown episode. Just go back to ''Nancy Can't Dance'', and select in the ''Sort by'' menu (top left next to 'Comments') 'Newest first'. You'll see my long answer! Also... Go on the top and click ''Sort by'' and then select ''Newest first''. I replied to you on this page, but it won't show up unless you do as instructed. So, just do this on this page and on the ''Nancy'' page.
@@I_was_a_Countdown_Kid-75-83 Hi Hayley .. I'm still finding replies you made to some of my posts that I never got notified of, and that I didn't locate straight away with the sorting by Newest .. The whole situation is really frustrating .. But I'm now responding to the post you made about 3 or 4 days ago, where you answered me on your thoughts about the Ellen Foley hosted episode of Countdown ( March 1980 ).
Thanks for sharing your memories of being there at that episode .. As I mentioned, I did watch virtually the full episode on YT, and thought overall it was pretty good .. But that included some of the great videos such as "Where's The Boy For Me" and "Refugee" .. As far as the live stuff was concerned, I can see why you would have enjoyed "Stupid Girl" .. Great song, and good to dance to .. The Loaded Dice song didn't do anything for me either, but I actually liked Jon English's "Hot Town" .. There was something about the verse melody in particular that sounded good to me.
As you said, new wave music was still the most exciting and interesting stuff going around at that time, with bands like Blondie still going strong .. But as you also mentioned, some of the earlier shining lights of the post-punk era like the Boomtown Rats were on the way down .. Mind you, I thought "Someone's Looking At You" wasn't at all bad .. Not their best effort by a long way, but still pretty listenable to .. I just looked at their "performance" of it on Countdown, and it wasn't anything to write home about, but I thought the song itself was OK .. Were you visible in the audience in the video ? .. I haven't seen the whole episode it came from as yet, but as you think it was one of the worst, I don't think I'll worry about looking for it.
Regarding the skating rink I went to for the skating to music nights I attended, I really can't remember what it was called or if it's even still around .. It's so long ago now, but it was either in Springvale or Noble Park .. I wasn't driving then, and it was within walking distance from where I lived in Springvale .. I never got round to checking out the pool halls scene .. But interesting you saying Rachel Sweet was popular at some of the rinks or pool halls you visited .. I really loved Rachel's first album "Fool Around" ( one of my very favourite albums ! ), and her second album was pretty good too, but the stuff she put out after that held little interest to me.
