I think people are being unfair to Katie; her life was at stake and the deal was as valid as a contract signed at gunpoint. If anything, You-Know-Who was taking advantage of the situation (keep in mind he stripped her of what little else she had, like the ring). Second of all, she only agreed believing that her husband would protect her (in this version, at least); so it is not like she genuinely wanted to give up her child. In the original story, if I recall, the little man specifically said he wanted her first child of royal blood, and the miller's daughter agreed disbelieving that she would actually marry into royalty.
This was the movie who made me a Billy Barth fan. He did an amazing job that I was scared of him as a child. I learned what a great actor he was n was very sad when he passed in 2000. May he always res5 in peace ❤
Katie was desperate. She had a choice between certain death or handing over a hypothetical child that may never even exist. Most people when given a chance to be saved from execution wouldn't be thinking about the finer details. Like Katie most would be thinking "yes, yes, whatever you say, just don't let me die". Self-preservation is a powerful instinct. Plus, the dwarf has been manipulating the situation all along. He clearly says at the beginning he wants a 'Prince's son' as a slave.
This girl's a bitch for backstabbing Rumplestiltskin. SHE MADE A DEAL, SHE NEEDS TO STICK TO IT. If you don't want to give away your child, THEN DON'T MAKE THE DEAL.
